  • Learn the basics of power factor, in the easiest way.
    I have an induction motor whose power factor is 0.7. But I really don’t know what that means. What is the exact meaning of power factor & what 0.7 indicates?
    These type questions are knocking many minds. But you don’t have to worry anymore, because by the end of this video the concept of power factor will be clyster clear to you. And to get it you need to watch the video!

    There is I believe a mistake @ 4:46 it should say Z = Square root of (R squared + X squared ) NOT square root of R squared + square root of x squared.

      yes that's true. that's a typographical error. Instead of showing square root for all, I have shown separately.

    First person to ever refer to AC current as RMS current. AC voltage as RMS yes, but no one refers to AC current that way, although it is accurate.

    What happens if the AC grid feeds an ohmic-capacitive load (a
    series connection of a resistor and a capacitor) instead of the above ohmic-inductive load?

    • @danielfranchette5547
      @danielfranchette5547 2 роки тому

      I'm reading your question today (three years later), you may have already gotten an answer. It is not advisable to find yourself in this situation with a high capacitive value because the circuit risks behaving like an RLC circuit (resitance inductance capacitance) with resonance and overvoltage phenomena (real circuits comprising a lot of inductors parasites). The networks include reactive energy compensators (either using capacitors or overexcited alternators) to make the best use of the transmission lines and approach a power factor as close to 1 as possible.
      In addition, capacitive loads generate significant overcurrents on power-up (see the behavior of computer switching power supplies) which is not the case with inductive loads which pose more problems when the current is cut.
      A particular case concerns generators using asynchronous machines (in hypersynchronous mode) a capacitive load is required to be able to start this type of generator.

    Useful explanation sir..
    Sir if Active power is the only useful power in the circuit then what is the purpose/use of Reactive power??? Pls explain!!!!

    • @electricinsights
      @electricinsights 2 роки тому

      Reactive power doesn't really have a purpose, it's just part of the reality of physics! Think of the foam in a beer, when you pour a beer (poorly), there's lot of foam (called head). This foam eventually dissipates, and doesn't add value to the drink. Reactive power is the same thing but with electricity. It's just a consequence of the frequency waves of AC power

    Sir, @ 06:50 why can't we add active power + Reactive power directly to get apparent power as both are powers though units are different.(I feel units are given just to differentiate the powers which is useful )

    • @GauravJ

      It is the load who decides which power to be consumed. It depends upon the load.

      But I am looking for is
      Let it be we have RL load
      While calculating apparent power it is sq root of Act P square + React P square
      Why can't we add directly Apparent power = Active power + Reactive power

    • @GauravJ
      @GauravJ  4 роки тому

      That is the formula my friend. It is derived from certain equations and calculations. We will not get correct result by directly adding active and reactive powers.

    Sir you were said in ur summary points if only load is pure inductive then the PF becomes zero. my doubt is, the induction motor consists only pure inductor(winding)so there is only reactive power bt the name plate of motor shows some value of power factor ,here where is the active power plz clarify me I'm waiting for ur reply

    • @GauravJ

      ramprasad ram, nothing is pure in this world. Same thing is also applicable to electrical equipments. Winding in the motor has it’s own resistance, & hence pf is not zero.
