"You say Gargantuan, I say 'Big as shit'." Yeesssss!!! This was the first time I ever heard of Kai Davis. It was a year after a went through a traumatic experience. This was where I discovered just how talented at writing I was, and because of this video, I've found a new happiness in my life.
"You know what I sound like? Like I've read a book before!" Damn, I have such a big "girl crush" on this young lady. Miss Davis, you put my high school & college experience into a beautiful, powerful poem. I love your work! (I'm feelin' "Black Girl" too!)
When she said "I will never equate stupidity with my melanin nor will i ever sacrifice my skin for the white man standing so never ask that i speak for anyone but me, represent anything that i dont stand for or fight for anything but what i believe in and if anyody EVER expects me to do anything but be myself, they got me fucked up" I felt that in my SOUL
I like this. I feel where you coming from. White teachers told me I would never make it in a regular 6th grade class. i am 24 now an dI am in college. this is my 3rd swemester and my GPA is a 3.2.
*applause* I feel you Kai, I feel you. Wow, four thumbs down, ok, let me guess... 1 former classmate who felt this was a personal attack, 1 jealous poet who can't pull off the same empassioned delivery and 1 neo-nazi's and 1 excited person who hit the wrong button on accident. :)
DAYUM!!! Go head, Sis! Do you have this piece written down somewhere? It was hard to hear some of it when folks were cheering (though rightfully so)😉. Sad fact, I still face what you were talking about from some Brothers and Sisters OLD ENOUGH TO BE MY GRANDPARENTS. .
Words dont uch I relate to this poem!!! I was always in advanced classes through middle and high school, and I was often joked, by black kids, because I sounded "white" and I would always respond with I didnt know speaking as if I had an education changed my skin!
You are truly amazing. I am 15 and I write poetry as well. However I have been writing the childish poems that are expected of me. I want to take my poetry to the next level and be taken seriously as a poet. Can you give me any advice??
lol... I'm white (not that it matters), but this was POWERFUL... I like... I also like the other one she did "Stares" Race aside (as it should be) This girl is a really amazing and I wish GREAT things for her future!
I fell in love with you I said this is sister is Down By Law.my 40 year old daughter call me and asked me if I was up on you I told her yes and we start following you love you baby girl
I don't get her point... does she want schools to dumb down their education system? "You say gargantuan, I say big as shit." Would you say "big as shit" in a job interview? Would you write that in an essay at a university?

One of my FAVORITE things about this poem is the DUAL dragging of both black and white people cause you get shit from both sides.
This sista has some power in her words. That's my type of woman right there.
