I’d consider “puhutko sinä suomea?” As formal Finnish. Nobody would ever use the real formal way “Puhutteko te suomea?”, unless they’re speaking to the president! Informal would be “puhuks suomee?”, or similar, depending on the dialect.

I especially enjoyed this, because out of no discernible reason I suddenly felt the urge to search for "how to speak Finnish" on google, only to land here and realize that my name (plus the accents, but still) means "you" in Finnish. I've never searched for random things on a whim and found my name in what I found before.

Try to say some common Polish words: cześć (hi), wszystko (everything), pszczoła (bee). You can write it and listen to it in Google Translate Greetings from Poland. ;)
when im old enough im going to move to finland and get a small studio apartment and become a character designer/twitch streamer and i will get a dog named poggers so thats why i need to learn finnish
you dont' need to say Sinä=You. The verb ,puhutKO, reveals who you are talking to. So just say Puhutko Englantia? Perfectly polite and understandable question.
ruispuuro Maybe when you're not talking properly. But you know when you write an essay or something you have to make it proper finnish not like in some sort of slang, at least in upper grades.
How do I say Swedish, like "Puhutko sinä ,,,,,,,"? Ruotsia or Ruotsi/ Ruotsiaa? It can be pretty useful for me and other swedes as well, especially those who cannot speak either finnish or english. Näkemiin.
Yes very hard to pronounce for native english speakers. The pronocing is completely different. But for example for japanese people pronouncing is easier and its sound good when they try to read or speak finnish. Haha : D i have japanese friends and when they try to say something in finnish its sounds good but if my english speaker friends try to pronounce it's sound awful. Well practice practice;)
Or it depends on the persons ability to pronouce the words. I am an English/Spanish speaker and have been told my Japanese is very good, despite learning Japanese on my own.
“Te” as the informal...that breaks everything in my Indo-European-speaking brain!!! And something that looks like German “Sie” for the informal...aaayayayi, I am going to have a devil of a time with this! ;-)
You could just ask it in english too: do/can you speak english , everyone can say yes or no . and prolly will understand the ''do/can you speak english''
A lot of times, yes, but remember: when you are abroad, the more effort you put into trying to blend in or speak the native language, the better your chances of gathering sympathy right away.
+Allbbrz true. if they see that you're really trying to communicate (but that you're struggling to do so), they'll automatically switch to English if they're able
Hi 200puppy7! Yes, when talking with children I would always use informal Finnish. It sounds more relaxed and friendly. Usually the formal language is used when one is either in formal situations, or for example talking to older people or customers. Best Wishes, Päivi Team FinnishPod101.com
