I have to agree with the “finger thing”. In the 1970’s I was bringing in some cash as a young guy in a factory. Took some classical guitar lessons for 4 months. I bought lots of albums and listened to John Hammond and lots of old blues. I just loved playing with 8-10 fingers and the thumbs. I like what you do.
In 1970 a friend and I dropped out of High School for a bit and went looking for the 'hippie' scene in San Francisco. Sadly it was pretty much over. We found a place to crash for a month in Petaluma CA. We crossed the Golden Gate back and forth daily. The song Spirit In The Sky played nearly every time we were on the bridge. Fitting. On our way home in May of 1970 we were driving back to Detroit through Kent Ohio. There were armed military on each overpass. The song played then as well........
✌️ my Gibson custom 61 SG nails that spirit in the sky intro tone. I’ve always loved that tone too. Such a simple riff but nailing the tone takes some good ears and the right gear. SG and a plexi will get you in the ballpark for sure.
Seems the older I get the less I use a pick. I turn up the guitar and get some cool sounds with my fingers. That P90/Mini HB/Bigsby is interesting too... 8) --gary
Thanks Jedd, always love to see the equipment and the right hand touch is so a part of that. You also seem to blessed with the long fingers like Uncle Larry. Match up your paws when you two are together and let us know.
Haha Im confident he’s got bigger mits than me mate! Especially when he’s plonkin that thumb over those low strings ;) Appreciate you tuning in and the kind words mate!
That washy delay sound with the Bigsby sounded sweet. Love that expandy-bloomy stuff...probably because I often revert to writing Spaghetti Western guitar lines and phrases ;-) "You see, I understand you men were just playin' around, but the mule, he just doesn't get it. Course, if you were to all apologize... [the men laugh] I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. Gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it..."
All of my favorite players use a combo of fingers and pick. Just more opportunities for dynamic expression I think. You've inspired me to try again at keeping the pick in my hand and switching back and forth. A difficult skill that you make look so easy! Thanks for the video Jedd
love the background hiss, it's real and raw, it's perfect. I think back to the Robert Johnson records and really wish we had some recording of his talking into the recorder like we're exposed to now. You are part of history Jedd! love it. keep it up.
Jedd re: ac30 non TB….do you normally plug into the normal or brilliant channel ? I have one of the early non TB amps and the eq difference between brilliant & normal channel is huge !
Hi Jed , love the Chanel it’s great to watch and just to let you know that mr matt parnel is still teaching music and playing drums at Oxley high school.
Awesome stuff. Tuesday is Cup Day in Melbourne so I'll be able to tune in to the Shed - great! (8pm Mon is 12 noon Tues here). Dude I am so with you on the "Spirit in the Sky" tone! I can get halfway there with a Sunface. But the fuzz on that track does this amazing "blooming" thing, where it sounds like it gets more fuzzed moments after the initial attack, at the same time doing the stuttering thing on the attack - so damn cool! I've never been able to get that right. Please tell us if you find a way. Looking forward to the next Show! :-) cheerio, Jono
Ah Cup day! Wow that brings back memories of the teachers dragging the tv in to the classroom haha I’ve never tried to chase that sound but it always blows my mind, the verb is wicked too. Cheers Jono! Good luck in the cup!
Absolutely love Austin. We have a 7mo old and two other littles so I havn’t been getting out much this year but I’ll be putting a combo together soon to get out around town.
Just bought a fuzz and of course went right to Spirit In The Sky! Jedd... when you vibe on that E... then use that unexpected C... that idea is probably my favorite recipe in music but sometimes difficult to attain. Something simple and then one kinda flavor thing that steps just a bit out/away. Maybe you could dive into that thinking in future video? Ways of doing that in different situations? thanks!
Hey thats a great idea Eric, I do spend time hunting those kinds of subtle changes when Im writing to try and break out of predictable lanes, I’ll think on that one for an upcoming rave. Hope that new fuzz is fun, maybe fuzz is the new overdrive! haha
Jedd - That first song should be called "There is no 'In Between' " ;-) That middle pickup position was feelin mighty lonely, man...lol - just kidding , Jedd and I dig you channeling the Billy Gibbons vibes as I've always been into that - I've written a couple of intro and turnaround licks that are not as good as the original BG himself, but they make me smile with a pirate twinkle in my eye :)
I love the Grecos- you need to break out the Framptonesque 3 pickup model you play in Animal Eyes. And the Sharkfin Teisco might be the coolest looking guitar on the planet. What got you started with the vintage MIJ guitars? You and Uncle Larry have made a living as country players, but your personal work is very cinematic. Uncle Larry provided most of the sound track to my Year of Living Covidly in 15 minute snippets. Your casual noodling is atmospheric and lush, with a lovely emotional tug. Since you mentioned Spirit In the Sky, I have to recommend his follow up, not quite a hit- Canned Ham. Doofy, catchy and I still love that guitar.
Me too mate! I sold that greco custom to a mate and he will not sell it back! haha You know Jeff Senn really got me in to Teiscos and Guyatones and Grecos and Tokais etc… i love them all!
Cool guitar! Reminds me of Neil Young's "Old Black". Do you have any tuning issues with bigsby? I think about install bigsby in on my LP, but I doubt whether to put the roller bridge or not
Hey mate, no tuning issues but I keep a lot of graphite from a led pencil in the nut and I make sure to keep the moving parts good and greased, its a bit of extra maintenance but worth it in my opinion ;)….Love Neil Young!
I’ve always played with my fingers then heard that a pick is the cheapest amp you can buy..how do you like P90s I just bought a LP with them but haven’t played it much yet
I like the right P90s mate, Its been hard to find a set that speaks the way i want them to because im such a tele single coil nut, I think the Ron Ellis set is pretty Magic.
I have to agree with the

Love that you are playing a Greco!!!! My number 1 les paul is an old MIJ Greco. Just killer guitars.
If we hear a big KABOOM, we'll know it was a lot closer to rocket science than you thought. Thanks for your insight. Much appreciated.

Is that a firebird bridge pickup? Whatever it is, sounds orgasmic!
Sounds great. That guitar has some Lanois vibes
Thanks Tim. Love Lanois, been a fan for years, Acadie changed my brain.
@@JeddHughesOfficial Yes! That was me with his Shine album

How do you like the Austin music scene? Hope they are treating you good and giving you lots of work.
Absolutely love Austin. We have a 7mo old and two other littles so I havn’t been getting out much this year but I’ll be putting a combo together soon to get out around town.
