    First of all, I’ve been where you are and I know it is overwhelming and scary. Hugs to you. One of the biggest and hardest things that I had to do was get real with myself and my spending habits. I was completely out of control and had an addiction to shopping. I was the reason we were always coming up short or scrambling to pay for things because I had overspent. I had to get a handle on that and own up to it. It was a hard process but I did it. The first thing I would do is go thru your budget and start eliminating expenses that aren’t necessities. Any and all subscriptions, eating out, etc need to be cut. Remember this is temporary for now and isn’t permanent. I know it’s incredibly hard to not be able to pay for things for extras for the kids. Maybe have the kids pick between dance and cheer instead of doing both or eliminate them for a few months until you can get caught up on the bills. The reality is they need a roof over their head and groceries more than they need dance or cheer. I know it’s tough-like I said I’ve been there but tough times call for tough decisions. The other thing is that making more money isn’t always the solution (again speaking from experience here). Learning to live with what you have vs spending like you wish/amount of income you wish you had is more of the heart of the matter. When we don’t get a handle on learning to live within our means of income that we do have, we will always overspend even when we do make more money. In the end making more money doesn’t really solve the root of the problem. I say all of this with love. I know it’s tough to face and it’s hard to get real with yourself. ❤

    This was wild. I think its time to sit down with your family and discuss some things that have to go. Those subscriptions and extra activities are eating your budget alive. Spotify, disney plus, Netflix, Microsoft, amazon are all luxuries not necessities. Eating out is nice but $250 for that can be used for a bill, that has to go.
    I used to have 5 streaming services I used but only use Netflix as that's what I watch the most. You have a lot of "want expenses" which is why you're over budget. After I cut out unnecessary expenses and subscriptions I saved $250+ a month
    Idk how cheer and dance season works but you may need to tell the kiddos either you can't afford cheer for right now because if you cut that out you'll save $1,000 a month. Lots of sacrifices will have to be made and it won't be easy but hopefully you and your family can come to an agreement, but its really your call since you are the bread winner.
    You're living WAY ABOVE your means. It's not your income, its a spending issue! That has to get fixed Pronto.

    Good video! I think it would be a good idea to think about the difference between “need” and “want.” I’d you want to have non-stop stress, then I guess you need to spend money you don’t have on restaurants, subscriptions and storage units.

      Thanks for watching Laura. And yes, I agree, we need to look at the Needs vs the Wants.

    When it comes to not having enough money in your budget, I would definitely get rid of restaurants! If you can’t cover everything other than basic bills and you’re already in a Hall BEFORE groceries honestly restaurant should be out the door you can make food so much easier and just like restaurants but at home so much cheaper! There’s a lot of things in this budget that can literally be cut down

    Yikes!!! Is there a reason your husband contributes such a small amount? And you were right in mentioning some things could be eliminated, I see many things such as all of the subscriptions would go. So would the restaurants.
    Do you ever watch Pepper Princess or Under the Medium? Both are great in suggesting how to cut expenses.
    I hope you find some extra money. There'd be no dance or cheer for the kids as that is not a need. Good luck!

    • @gene416
      @gene416 Рік тому +7

      I agree. This is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. The “reality” is Restaurants, Netflix, Amazon need to go and your husband needs to bust his ass or those kids need to get out of dance and cheer.
      No excuse. You are so over budget

      Thanks so much for watching. I can completely understand what you're saying. Keep in mind, that income is an estimate. Of course hubby will contribute much more; I just don't use it in my estimate. Hopefully everything will become clearer as the month progresses. Thanks again! 😊

    • @DesignsbyMelnCo
      @DesignsbyMelnCo  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for your comment Gene. Be assured, hubby does work his butt off, I just don't use his full income in the estimated column since he does have bills he needs to pay. Also, I'm the main breadwinner of the family. Hopefully you'll stick around throught the month to see how it all progresses! Thanks again. 😊

    The car alone eats $1427 (pymts + insurance + gas) a month, and that is not including occasional tech problems or tuning. Minus restaurants. Cheaper phones. One Netflix. Dance and cheer, at these levels of expenses, is out of your league. It is possible to live within $3500...4000 socking about $1.5-2K a month into savings/RRSPs.

  • @brandi1719

    Yes, we all can relate. We had to cut back on extra activities and change phone plans, tv subscriptions, groceries, eating out... it's been really tough. Hubs been picking up extra hours at work. But I keep reminding myself, this too shall pass.

    Thank you so much for this real video. 👏 I've been budgeting for years and recently watching a lot of budgeting videos hoping to find hints on how to improve things. I was getting tired of these perfectly balanced budgets and some with extra to spare. I related to you because I am at a negative budget situation at the moment. I cut costs where I could. But now I have accepted that it's an income problem. Working on what I can do to improve that😅 Keep going strong 🤗

    Is it possible to get rid of that storage unit? Why do you need to keep ALL their stuff? Keep a few pieces if they’re sentimental and sell the rest. Stop all the subscriptions but one streaming service? And I’d skip that eating out all together for a bit.

    • @DesignsbyMelnCo
      @DesignsbyMelnCo  Рік тому

      Yeah I'm definitely going to be talking to Hubby to see if we can cut down on some of the streaming services. Unfortunately, the storage unit has to stay, I'm not keeping anything extra, it's just some pieces that are family heirlooms and too big for our house. Thanks so much for watching and for your support.

    If you got rid of the storage payment and car payment it would be a night and day difference. Why are paying to store stuff that you probably don't care about? You might even be able to make a buck selling the stuff. The car arrangements are probably not as easy to fix but definitely worth a look.

    New sub here... i love your real video. We had to rent from family and at one time and move back w my dad to make ends meet when my husband decided he wanted a new job and fresh start at a 50k pay reduction.. fun times..
    since i am new i am just wondering why Ron is only contributing $500? That doesnt even cover his rent much less food. Is he just a roommate?
    I feel the dance and cheer prices. When we struggled my daughter gave up cheer ( it was costing us 5k a year) and went into a non comprtition dance program.

    Luckily the solution is super easy, you just have to shut it all down and only spend on necessities.
    That includes cutting down on saving for your kids future education. Love that you want to help, but right now keeping a roof over everyone's head is more important than so much of this stuff.

  • @lifeWithAarynLynn

    I am never one to judge and please don’t take this in this any negative way because we all have things that we need to balance, but is there anyway that you can change in your vehicle and get a different vehicle for a lower price because you’re paying over $700 for a vehicle OMG! Not to mention between dance and cheer $1000 a month, is there anyway at all to take any of that down by maybe less classes or something like that I can understand why you were so stressed you have some extraordinarily high bills and if there’s anyway you can rearrange and take things down a little bit that may help you come up with a little bit more money because if you don’t have enough money to cover these items I would suggest and reevaluating what items you might be able to renegotiate and bring down. I know while back a bunch of us told Jennifer over at life and envelopes to trade in her very expensive vehicle that was only I think $430 a month down to a SUV and it brought it down significantly under $150 per month! Saving her a lot more money so that she could increase her budget for groceries. 9:46

    can you get rid of the storage unit bill? by getting rid of things you don't need, if you haven't seen or used it in 6 months to a year, sell it or get rid of it. focus on paying for the four walls first and worry about the rest afterwards. We all have been there before. Might need to take a hard look at things that can wait till things are paid. Also look into Dave Ramsey.

    How is your netflix so high? Mine was only $10.71 a month. I canceled it cause we dont watch it. I wish we could cancel cable and our house phone, but the husband thinks my FIL needs it cause he throws a fit if its not there. So we spend $225 a month to appeas him. While we dont even watch it or use it at all.
    When it comes to eating out and groceries, adjust your budget where needed. As someone who is super busy, is gone from 7:15 am til 10pm Tues, Weds and Thurs, most Saturdays at the race track March thru October, we eat out. We did go from $800 a month eating out to $280 in Sept. But our groceries went from $400 a month to upwards of a $1000 a month. My husband spends an easy $700+ a month at gas stations...NOT GAS that costs us $1200 a month. We have a great income, but i get behind cause he the $400-500 a week i have to budget for gas and groceries and such gets spent in so many ways....lets not talk about his $25k a yr racing hobby!!! 😭😭
    Girl, you do you! You figure out what your doing and whats most important. If your hubs is in line with you and agreeing to things, you two can figure it out. Cause let me tell you, my husband is NOT!!! He pays zero attention then throws a fit when there is no money... yet failed to realize he just spent $300 for racing, $150 at gas stations and oh and $100 for a pair of bibs cause he needed a new pair right then and there. AND YES HE DOES THESE THINGS IN A WEEK PAY PERIOD!! 🤔🙄😳🤦‍♀️😭

    Your finances stressed me out just watching. So I can only imagine what they do to you. I heard once, and I think it applies here, that you are not budgeting, you are just tracking expenses. If you were truly budgeting there would be no restaurants, Spotify, dance, cheer, Crave. You would be economizing on food (shopping sales, meal planning from weekly fliers, etc). You would be driving less, etc. Best of luck to you. I hope you can make the necessary changes to make it all work.

    Your budget is giving ME anxiety! I’m going to be blunt here, I’m not sorry, it sounds like someone should be!!!
    First of all, YOU don’t need to be be bringing in more money, your husband does, he should be providing for his family!
    Second, trim the fat out of this budget! The only things that should be in it besides an emergency fund, is rent, utilities, groceries, gas, and a car, a CHEAPER car!! Get rid of the rest that stuff until you are back on your feet! You will not be a bad parent telling your kids no to dance and cheer! And that storage unit, clean it out, have a yard sale, make some money, donate the rest and get rid of the unit! Put your big girl panties on and make adult choices!
    I had to do the same things with my budget years ago and have NEVER felt regret, only pride in a job well done…
