I see where u comin from. I personally don’t think they should lose they jobs unless these cops have a history of abusing people. Maybe I’m naive, i think giving people a chance to improve they act instead of having they lives completely ruined over a mistake like this might help with our society’s issue of doubling down even when they’re in the wrong since they have no choice. EVERYBODY evades fares; across racial groups, genders, sexual orientations, ethnic groups, religions, and socio-economic status (saw some kid in the wealthiest neighbourhood in Canada, The Bridle Path, try to get on with an expired Metropass). Maybe there should be a debate to raise taxes and make transit free.
I hope the police are held accountable. Using a presto card will show proof of payment. Each time it's tap the fare is recorded, if the transfer is within the two hours , the amount is not deducted. Some police are too much with their abusive behaviors. It makes my blood boil. Hope this rider not only win his case but get a huge compensation
FACT, I even spoke to the driver about it on the Spadina street car, lunch time office crowd in China Town, he said he sees them and TTC is aware but he is only paid to drive in which he's correct. I only see fares enforced in low socioeconomic areas, and they pull the bus out of service for 1 person with 7am working class people going to work. Too many racist drivers on the TTC. If they don't like their jobs leave it for the immigrants who are happy for it.

I've seen some crazy stuff on the subway, nothing that comes close to this scenario ... But one time a TTC employee showed me some beheadings and horse porn 😅 this was like in grade 10 so I filed a report at school about it .. never heard anything about it afterwards. But yea most employees and cops are good people.. sometimes you hit the jackpot w/ a jackass and gotta survive the storm by playing your cards right

@@tron868 yea, true story, it happened around 2004 on the train near downsview or Wilson station, he was in a full uniform but just riding the subway. I don't know what his ethnic background but probably from the middle east, and perhaps in late 20s or early 30s. We started talking about phones and after showing him a custom interface I designed for my Sony Ericsson he produced series of really disturbing videos on his phone, I got the impression he thought they were cool.. luckily it was very pixelated lol anyhow 98% of my interactions w/ ttc has been positive

This is what racism looks like. Baseless accusations and complaints leveled against an INNOCENT Black person. These officers should be fired. Good on him for standing up for himself and happy he wa not killed for doing it. All of this for what? Entering the bus at the back door, and paying just like everyone else does. Disheartening and disgusting.
I hope that Chase gets proper legal representation, sues and exercises his full legal rights. As Black people, we are too quick to forgive and move on with no accountability to police. Sue the police, the TTC and all parties involved.

One question that wasn't asked: why are two detectives responding to such a low level offence as (alleged) fare non-compliance? Probably were in the area, missed the beat-cop/constable days and wanted to blow off some steam. Stupid/idiot move either way.

I hope that this video goes viral. After Mr. Richards proved that he paid that should’ve been the end of the conversation. The driver behaved in a discriminatory manner when he tried to then refuse service after he paid for simply the way he “smelled of cigarettes”. This was not a reasonable reason to deny service or escalate the situation to a police interaction. The officers assaulting him and then stepping their feet on him and resting feet of Mr. Richards denied him basic humanity and that is really sad. He was assaulted, discriminated against, and then prohibited from using the TTC which is an essential service to all. The sound of hurt in his voice was really impactful. These stories need to be told until events like this no longer happen in society. Financial recompense may not erase what happened but I do hope he sues and wins.

I heard about this story in the news last week, and I was disgusted and disturbed to hear what transpired between Mr. Richards and the police. Brandon, I am so glad that you are using your platform to allow people to tell their truths. Just imagine how many similar events like this one happens daily. He is right. We have to be grateful for cameras -- they do not lie. Let's hope justice will be served.

I have no problem with cops getting paid over 6 figures. However, I do have a problem when these cops do get in trouble they are suspended with PAY. This is taxpayers' money. Cops are held to a higher standard and if they abuse that power they should be stripped of that power and face more severe consequences. Unforntly that's not the case.

I live in downtown Toronto and never see racisms but I started learning about nasty cops since I was about 12. I also had to indirectly work with them for 7 years of night shift responding to Alarms. I have witnessed brutal assaults by the Police. They don't care about reality at all.
I lived in Toronto 1971 when immigration from Jamaica became to increase and befriended a coworker from there. The racism started to become prevalent back then even within my workplace. Then it started spreading amongst the white friends of mine. Left Toronto.
Disgruntled TTC operators who misuse their authority to resolve petty disputes should be held liable in situations like this.
Make sure you sue them and the city for the maximum amount. It's obvious that all three of them are racist. And they all should be fired.

This angers me. Why were plain clothes officers responding to this matter in the first place? Something ain’t right. Last I checked drivers and fare collectors aren’t supposed to get into altercations with riders over fare related matters.
This should NEVER happen to any person even for fare evasion or any non-Violent or non threatening situation on public transit.

This story makes me so sad and reminds me of the time a TTC driver called the police on me after taking my Metro Pass as I was on my way to work. I had to call a lawyer I worked for to get my pass back. Some of these drivers probably enjoy when the police beat us up without just cause. This driver should be held responsible for calling the police on this man, he also should be charged.

One driver even attacked my elderly neighbor saying she could not come onto the bus while she was on her phone. You are correct it is horrible in certain areas.

This happen to me once and I pay in front of the bus but the driver did not like me for some reason and ask me to leave I told him no till I get to my next stop so he call the ttc cops I just stay and wait for them he was in the wrong nothing happened to me !

some of these bus drives are so mean. on occasionally entering the bus and you realized that you don't have money on your card and ask the driver politely to give you a ride they give you attitude. Sometimes they will drive the bus so recklessly that throw ppl on the bus back and forth. Is disgusting how people are now a days.

This is not the time to be sad. TTC employees deliberately target black ppl especially men on a daily basis. U can show ur pass right in their face and they refuse to look. Then they call u out of your seat and accuse u of defrauding them. They r amongst the most biased and hateful of all public employees. Complaints sb made to their Commissioner who is a city councillor and needs public votes in every election to maintain his position. Exercise ur franchise ppl!
