  • This week on #TheBGshow, Brandon addresses the hot topic of Transracial identity. The conversation is back in the spotlight after British influencer Oli London made news with their transition to identifying as “Korean”. For many people, this brought back memories and comparisons to Rachel Dolezal, a white woman in America who pretended to be Black but was later exposed. Hear what people have to say about Transracial identity. What are your thoughts? Drop them below!

How can a trans person say that there can't be transracial people??? If there are transexual people, then anyone should be able to change to what ever they want no? It's a pure contradiction for a trans sexual person to say that someone cannot be transracial because they don't know what it's like to be the other race, and they don't go through what the other race goes through, when they too don't know what it's like to be the opposite sex. This is the contradiction with "identity" if you can change one way, you should be able to change or identify in any way you feel, no?

@LivingDeadGurl my dear race is a social construct just like GENDER, it is not based on biology, so technically just like gender it can be fluid. For example, a biracial child can choose either one or both of their races or neither and say they are mixed. Also, look at DNA tests results we are all a little bit of every race are we not, we all originate from black origins do we not, so technically we were all "black" at some point. If gender which originally was dual, is now whatever you choose it to be or feel like it is, so should race, and a transgender person should be the last person to argue against that since we all have to accept that how they feel determines reality. Let people live their life and stop judging them. It hypocrisy at its best.

Also, how would it feel like if a white guy was yelling the N word all over the place and saying "I'm black" as an excuse. The reason trans sexual people can be trans is because it's their gender, gender is you're identity. Race/ethnicity is a group of minorities.

It’s an American thing. We used to have a class system where people of European decent or anyone who had the skin tone of white, and people who had darker skin where separated. During the mid 20th century there would be signs in public saying “whites only” or “black restroom” and because of that it has diluted our vocabulary to use broad terms to describe multiple ethnicities.

I think transracial is another social construct that is a further attempt to label people and put them into a specific category. As a Jamaican Canadian I identify as black but I am also mixed with South Asian through my grandparents. So what about those who are genetically biracial? Multiracial? It is hard to identify with just one race when you are many races. I like that the general consensus in your video is that we are all human. That's all we know for sure. I would like to see you interview some biracial and multiracial people and see what their opinion is on the concept of being transracial.

Same here dude. I’m Native American and Irish/German/French, and proud of it, but I look as pale as a sheet of paper, so it’s hard to tell that I actually am Native American. This is the case for a lot of Americans, and I find it hard to understand why trying to change your race is part of the fad. Who would want to anyway? Shouldn’t we all be proud to be born as we are and be able to enjoy life instead of constantly attempting to change race or gender? I’d be pretty unhappy with life if I thought that the only goal in life was to change my gender and race so people think I’m cool. That’s just sad.

The idea of cultural appropriation is a hate based idea. Cultures love to share their culture, if you stop doing that then cultures can die. Bullies use hate to force something on another. Sharing is caring. If people choose one culture over another, there might be something in that culture that's appealing over other things. Truth and love are the same thing, people are attracted to both of those things.

@@aky10011 we aren't being hypocritical. The problem is they're fetishising the race they get attracted for all the wrong reasons for example Oli London makes it very clear that the only reason they ''transracial'' is because of a kpop idol called jimin which wtf they changed their race cause the kpop idol attracted them and they don't even care or know anything about the Korean culture like at all like come on now Kor/Ean? Are you fucking kidding me. And every ''transracial'' changed their race cause of racial stereotypes and the way that race is shown on the media.
Transgender people have went through actual genuine mental and physical pain and I know what your thinking '' aren't they fetishising that gender too'' no they're not and when they do transition their lives are threatened by transphobes. And even tho they get treated badly when they come out as trans they won't transition back to they're old selves no matter what they go through but ''transracial'' people on the other hand can go back to their real race if they don't like the one they're trying to be.

I also think it is your freedom to not accept this transition as a biological fact...and this would be scientific truth. But I do feel that an individual should be allowed to transition and live with whatever they choose to become...if sex is being allowed as a norm, so should race transition be allowed as a norm. 250 years from now...with genetic surgical science...this may be a more accepted transition...and few will bear the sensitive feelings that purvey in people like you. Is this truly racist or dehumanizing if it is done with perceived and believed respect and desire to absolutely become another race? Will not someone always have feelings of being dehumanized or persecuted...do we then never allow any transitions? Does that mean no one gets to be something they want to become? Michael Jackson was a pioneer in transitioning from one race to another...and however strange it was to most people...his friends and associates eventually stopped criticizing him and just accepted that he could be who he wanted to become. And there are Black people who live in Africa who were not persecuted, prosecuted, or dehumanized by white or Chinese people or Arabic people...because they were more isolated and therefore not interacting with these colonialists...perhaps they do not wear the same bias as you would have against a biologically race transitioning person, due to a past of discrimination. Are we all confused yet? More transition shock will be coming I think...and again, an individual should be able to be who and whatever they want to become...that does not mean any stranger needs to approve or accept this transition as a norm or scientific fact...but they should also not persecute with a bias either.

From an evolutionary biology perspective, there are genetic markers for populations that are shared variably. Two warring tribes in northern Africa have less shared genetic markers in common than they have with another population in Jordan. Russians have more genetic markers in common with the Japanese than with Germans. Even things like skin pigmentation, facial structure, and body type have way less correlation to what we call race. There are much more differences between populations than there are differences between races within the same populations. Hence, Population 1 is more different in terms of overlapped genetic markers than Population 2 if there's a large enough geographical or combat gap. A white guy in Pop 2 has more in common with a black guy from Pop 2 (the same population) than a different white guy from Pop 1. Everyone knows the greatest genetic diversity is in Africa and that means one black person may have more in common with one population in Africa than with another black person in the same neighbourhood and, more interestingly, more in common with a white person in the same neighbourhood than a different population in Africa.
That's regarding population commonalities and differences. The sociocultural aspect of it is a consequence of coexisting and shouldn't be the marker otherwise a white guy in the ghetto can claim some such nonsense like being more "black" than a highly-articulate well-read Harvard-educated black man. I like to think that often times the racist unknowingly has more in common with the man he's prejudiced against and less in common with the ancestors he claims he's related to.

I just think that the culture is fascinating! It's a very interesting culture, a culture I would like to get to learn more about and eventually learn the language. I had heard of K-drama and Kpop (mostly from my friend) and decided to give it a try and it's quite interesting. It seems like nowadays I can't find a culture fascinating and want to learn more about it without being called a Koreaboo. And it hurt me to hear that from my friend. And I agree with the lady in the video (skip to 2:00) because if you look, rap originated from West Africa. And if you listen to Kpop and watch the MVs, you can see that the outfits get more and more revealing and looking more southern (Now listen bc I have a feeling someone is gonna start and argue: I'm NOT against Kpop artists clothing styling become more southern. It makes the group/band look more unique to me). I don't think being "trans-racial" is bad as long as your respecting the culture and not being trans-racial to be cute or more attractive (or like a twitch e-girl streamer). As long as your NOT going to the extreme and copying the stereotypes or making it weird then think you can be trans-racial if you want, I don't care.

I think race is a combination of (1) dna (your genetic ancestry), (2) how you are raised, and (3) how people perceive you (and I mean, without doing something to be perceived as a particular race - how you actually look, unaltered). For some people the three don’t completely align but you need at least one of these factors to belong to a particular race. I am mixed race by DNA - half African American and half Jewish. I was raised white but perceived as black. So that makes me black - even though I didn’t know I was black. The dna didn’t lie, people’s perceptions don’t lie. My daughter is 25% African American. She was raised white (I didn’t know I had African American ancestry) and she looks white. So, she’s white. It would be odd for her to claim otherwise because she doesn’t experience life as a black person.

Also, how can you not know you were black, as you just said your half/half? Just because some perceives you as black doesn't make you black. If someone perceives me as latina, doesn't mean I am. Dumb question- people do it all the time. Millions of Americans did on the last Census (2020). Even in South Africa during Apartheid there was a legal process for changing your race. In the US South during slavery a person's race could change simply by crossing a state border or by a state enacting a new law. In Nazi Germany one thing that could determine a person's race was their date of birth. That means that if it were discovered that your birth date was in error the change in dates could change your race. Race is cultural and it is the nature of cultures to change.

This was interesting but I feel a huge opportunity was missed. You spoke to a trans man. I feel there is a correlation between transracial and transgender identities. Science backs up being trangender but not transracial and I myself am not sure why. Now, I will admit I'm not making an argument FOR transrace, I just want better reasons why it's not "a thing" and being transgender is. Again, I will admit that the whole argument for or against being transracial confuses me, and I'm a trans woman. It seems that whatever one says against being transracial can also be said for being transgender. Yet, experts say no. That being transgender IS a thing but, transracial is not. I would have loved to have heard the opinions of those here that said transrace is not a thing, whether they had the same opinion on transgender? because, if yes, that discredits their opinion. The two lovely black women on the bench that say you can't choose your culture, well guess what? I didn't choose to be trans. So, now what? I feel had the conversation gone in this direction, especially with the trans man, it could have been more insightful. Also, I think Oli London is a poor example. He fetishized Korean culture. He's only interested in the surface, stereotypical aspects of the culture. Transracial or not, this just makes him look like a baffoon.

Does anyone ever think about the idea that someone could be a soul that reincarnated into another race that they don't identify with? There has been so many genocides and bloodlines wiped out that they could reincarnated as another race and then have a racial identity disorder. Another thing, is what if you're raised a certain way to believe you're a certain culture but then it doesn't match your DNA profile? Does that make your experience as who you know yourself to be less authentic?

The problem is people invent or divert terms and terminology. Gender and Sex are in fact the same exact thing and have been referred to scientifically for over a century. Biologically there are only Male and Female whether you refer to as sex or gender this is true and proven by DNA. Race however is in fact a social construct, anyone legally can claim they are any race, and this cannot be proven or disproven scientifically. It is actually totally legal to change your race. Next time you are up for a drivers license renewal, change it. I did to mine the last 3 times. Skeptics of "transracialism" biggest argument say "its about skin color and look" etc....but the biggest argument against is it is actually racist to judge someone by their racial look lol. Boom! That is a ridiculous argument full of contradictions. It claims gender identity is innate and can conflict with the sex assigned at birth, by that same logic so is racial identity, and it can conflict with the race of your parents. Since both gender identity and racial identity are just feelings, we cannot deny a persons truth if they truly feel of a different race just like they may truly feel to be of a different sex. We can accept a multitude of different gender identities all based on subjective feelings but when it comes to people feeling a different race, why is it a no? My guess is people will realise the absurdity of it all and therefore undermine the 1000 gender theory. Tough shit you created this feelings trumps biology bandwagon now own it.
