    Wow, when I was a kid I rode my bicycle from the middle of El Paso to that museum back in the 1970's. Glad to see it is still there!

    Fall, 1975. North bound I-5 out of L.A., north side of the Grapevine. 80,000 pound set of doubles. NO Jake Brake. First time I had ever been down that road. Really didn't know how to handle a heavy load down 5 miles of 6% grade. Boy were my brakes smoking at the end of that ride. Started down the hill too fast (probably 50 rather than 35) and then pumped my brakes (wrong!). But that man could be taught, never got them hot going down there again. Slow at the top, and steady, light braking. Let the compression of your diesel help you keep it slow.

    Thanks for sharing. Never been in East El Paso. When I was traveling to El Paso, there was no freeway. Thank for the arm chair vacation this morning. Enjoyed the video very much. Be safe and have a good day.😊😊😊😊😊

    Whew...I thought what an area to have a breakdown. I read the thumbnail and thought you had engine problems, then realized you were talking about braking and not breaking. :)

    I have never taken that bypass. But it was always late at night or very early in the morning, always dark, when I went through El Paso. I used to stay there overnight at a hotel I really liked when I took a prolonged leave. Drive from San Diego To San Angelo TX or Longview TX. A two day drive. Going up that grade in NM will be fun.

    Pringles are ok at altitude. Flying on a C-130 from RAF Woodbridge to Zaragoza Air Base, Spain we experienced a rapid decompression at around 30,000 feet. Everyone's potato chips bags exploded. My Pringles can held strong. It expanded in my hand then went back down. It was still sealed. I had chips to eat, not so for anyone else. 😂

    Thanks for this. We travel through El Paso several times a year in our RV but have never taken the loop. Because of the grades we may continue to stay on 10.

      Only far west Texas has mountains, the Franklin Mountains in El Paso are the tail end of the Rockies. Only 2 out of the 254 counties in Texas are in the mountain time zone, El Paso is one of them and the rest are in the central time zone.

    I think that one of the safety features of a automated shift transmission is that there is no danger of missing a gear when downshifting going down a grade to keep the truck speed at a safe velocity. I've heard of truckers missing a gear when gearing down on a manual tranny and then cannot stop the truck to get into gear again going down the hill.

    • @rickyhawkins7407
      @rickyhawkins7407 9 днів тому

      I was taught by my father, and trained when I went to CDL school, to downshift before I reach the top of the hill and started down.
      As the professional I was not to concern myself with people behind me being annoyed because I slowed down. They have no idea what’s responsibility it is driving a semi trailer on the highway.
      I was over 50 when I started my new career as an OTR driver. My trainer was initially annoyed when I wouldn’t take a risk he deemed worthy. When I was able to prove to him by times, that rushing and pushing harder really didn’t get us from point A to B any faster, he backed off and let me do my job.

    You said that in wet situations you use that jake brake thing in 1st setting, because it might otherwise loose traction. But wouldn't it stop braking if it detects traction loss? I am asking because in our trucks we could fully engage "retarder" (very strong brake) in every condition, because it works with ABS and it will not lose traction.

    You described when to use a jake brake, but to somebody who has never been in a rig........they probably have on idea what it is, nor how it works..................nor what degree of jake you use under what grade/load conditions.....................

    How to use an engine brake????? DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @manco828
      @manco828 8 днів тому

      Why not?

    • @MrSmi31093
      @MrSmi31093 8 днів тому

      @@manco828. Many trucks don't have the engine brake. They give you a false sence of security because foot on the BRAKE is adjustible by pressure. Engine brake has no control, it's either ON or OFF. The idea was to save your brakes and use engine pressure. If you have predictable amount of time use it otherwise don't.
