BUILD: Diy Ink and Quill (No Lathe Pen Challenge)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лют 2017
- This is my entry into Bill Livolsi's No Lathe Pen Challenge (link below). Since so many people made so many great pens I decided to make the most simple pen I could think of, and focus on making my own ink. Both of these were a first for me and a couple items off the maker bucket list. Had a lot of fun, and I can't believe how well it worked!

Love it
If you have a giant feather just lying around i would love to know where you are living
Thumbs up for making everything from scratch, including the ink!
Gary Cooper thanks! I figured ink is really the most important part of a pen so I figured I would start there :)
@@TabLeft This is whats annoying with 99% of videos these days
its all based on buying material from retail mainstream
Yet what happens when SHTF hits or you out in the sticks
You need to be able to make everything from raw materials with no retail chain/manufactoring mainstream
@@TabLeft Did you happen to list out all the info on a clear precise list ?
@@charliebrownau I didn’t. The recipe it’s pretty straightforward thought Gum Arabic and carbon black (soot) I use shellac since I didn’t have Gum Arabic at the time but it will dry much quicker which isn’t always a good thing.
This, this is a winner.
Thanks!
Wow! Very cool! Great entry.
Magnificent, mate!
Now That's just Genius mate....Loved it and Good luck with the Challenge Shared and Tweeted
+Terry WoodCrafts 67 thanks :)
What did you use to get the flame so "sooty"? :) Loved the video mate.
+dashn64 citronella oil for tiki torches :)
Very clever take on the challenge
1:53 Can you snort it though?
I love it!
I love YOU!
Nice! Scary final though, right in a face. 😀
thats the same method inmates use to make tattoo ink but they use hair paste in a bowl made from an orange peel and put a paper bag over it.
Emilio Carbajal i didn't know that! Thanks :)
TabLeft Workshop haha your welcome i work at a prison thats how i know.
Instead of hair paste could you use hair gel?
nice old-school pen :)
I'm amazed how long can actually write before need to dip again :)
Kühn it actually could have gone longer I was amazed
Very cool
Awesome video! AmaZing looking ink! Question though, do you know how long the ink lasts??
Reuben Hartikainen it’s a method that has been used for centuries so I’m going to assume a very long time :) if you know what kahal eyeliner is it’s the same idea.
what mad ink from candle smoke and shellack. that seem lot easer boiling walnuts and bet worry if get wet. not every drop lots water on letters any way.
My goose is molting so I wanted to do something with the feathers
Is that xacto knife handle made in the shop? It's nice...
+Kris Freyermuth funny you should ask since I plan to make one very soon but no this one is store bought.
The flame is sooty cause it is a olive or vegetable oil and it does that
lovely
Thank you!
nice video!!!
+Nikos Karavas thank you!
What is burnt ?
What do you put in the soot to make it ink? Water? Alcohol??
Kyrna_ART supposed to use Gum Arabic which you can get in most art supply shops. I just used shellac in the video because I had it on hand
I've made a Quill with a similar white feather. But there's a slight yellowish discoloration on the edges of the feather. I'd really like it to be perfectly white. Any ideas on how I could acheive that..?
Bhavana M.C. Not sure I bought this one from a craft store. I would guess a hair bleaching product might do the trick though.
TabLeft Workshop Yeah I was thinking of the same. I'm just scared it'll get damaged though.
Bhavana M.C. Maybe try on a test feather if you have one.
TabLeft Workshop Yeahh good idea... I think I'll do that. Thanks! 👍
Can you use water for the ink??
AriPotter The Gryffindor Princess yeah I tried it
WOW THE CANDLE IDEA
Did you also temper the quill first??
Bryan Stellfox I didn’t but these were craft store feathers and they seemed like they maybe didn’t need it. I don’t know if it would hold up as well over time but it was for a contest and time was a factor so I skipped it.
@@TabLeft Thanks for the reply! I agree, for a contest, skip it. If it accomplishes what is laid out in the rules of the contest, good enough is good enough!
Why do you have to one up me on the ink making? haha I'm just kidding man awesome work!
Kaged Creations dude I'm so sorry I didn't realize someone had already done a feather quill. I scrolled through the playlist but I guess I missed it. You did a far more legit job on the quill though for what it's worth. Nice work! I was mostly interested in the ink so I kinda just threw the quill in to make it qualify lol
I'm totally not worried about it. I started looking more into it after I made the video and saw that they made the ink from smoke. It's really cool to see someone do it. I see it's unlisted now, are you going to make it public. I'd like to share it.
Kaged Creations yeah my "build" videos go live on Friday mornings but since this is for a contest I told bill he could share it early if he wanted so feel free to post it
What was the stuff that he set on fire? That turned the bottle black. Sorry to bother you
Ik I'm almost a year late, but using a normal candle does the trick
I tried this, but I couldn't get the soot to mix in??????
+Toby Pitton what did you mix it with?
Shellac.i think my candle Ash might not be fine enough.
Toby Pitton maybe the soot was traditionally gathered from oil lamps I believe hence the name "lamp black". from what I understand in prison they will burn greasy hair products to gather the soot for tattoo inks etc. I haven't tried using a candle but it's possible you're getting a "waxy" soot rather than an "oily" one. Shellac isn't exactly the ideal carrier either, if you can get you hands on it from a local art supply or craft store get some "Gum Arabic" it's the real stuff used in traditional ink. I just use shellac because I had it on hand.
Thanks!!
""DUDE""
awesome job man really like the way your thinking there liked and shared and already was a sub if you have time check it out I'm in the challenge as well cheers
+Pascal Surprenant thanks and I will check it out now!
We can see that you like Adam, i guess you bought these machinist drilled metal things because of him...
Well I bought them because they seem super handy (they are) and I've seen them in use on many many channels, that being said I do love Adams work and I do see him use them pretty often so that may have been a factor I guess.
TabLeft Workshop I ve seen them everywhere too but are they expensive ? Anyway nice video in the concept
