Consider the addition of iron and a thickening agent. The iron will bind to the gallic acid which was produced by the heating of the tannins in the solution (gallic acid + ferrous cation -> ferrous gallate). The thickening agent could be powdered egg whites or acacia gum. Unlike the solution of DIY ink, from above, iron gall ink is considered permanent and will not wash off of paper.
You can harden the nib of the feather by baking sand at 250 for half an hour then curing the tip of feather in the hot sand after carving. This will keep the shaft from splitting and give it some flexibility while writing too. Let it cool completely before using, obviously. Awesome video!
It doesn't matter if they are green. We use them to dye metal to prevent rust. 💖 thank you for sharing this!! I'm working on different natural earth pigments.
I don’t have a great history with walnuts. My grandparents’ house has a few walnut trees, HUGE WALNUT TREES, and it is VeRy easy to slip on the mountains of walnuts(especially when EvErYoNe is watching)
Thank you KoR. Recently my 8 year old grandson found a goose feather and got excited because he wanted to make a quill. I looked how to on the web and found several way but I was going to buy the ink. When I saw this and started watching, my other grandson called his brother to come and watch. I have put out request on our local swapshop for the walnuts and am hoping someone has some with the husks still on. Thanks again for making a little boy's dreams come true.

I've tried so many times when I was younger with found feathers and commercial ink. Now I know why it never worked. The ink was way too thick & I didn't cut the channel into the quill. 38 years of failure are about to end! Thanks oKOR.
Temper the feather tip to harden it. (Stick the ends in heated sand for a few hours.) There's a bunch of online resources about carving pens. I found an old book that illustrated it, and How To Make Everything basically does the same thing in their series on making books from scratch.
I have a list of things I want you to try, so if you can please do any. Thanks. What will happen if you freeze flash cotton and then burn it? will it still burn? Can you use the Solar Scorcher on dry ice? Try putting dry ice into a vacuum chamber I wonder what's going to happen ! Dry Ice + Liquid Nitrogen and then put in water. What will happen? Will the water freeze or just get cold.
Nice video. Ive known about this fir awhile. Tip for everybody, befire you cook it off at the end you need to add a decent portion of carbon to make it black. You can easily get carbon from burned up fire logs. Just scrap off the black and grind into powder.
I would try holding the quill at a lower angle when writing. Also filtering the ink might improve its quality. The steel nib and feather you use most likely only write on the down stroke, so you can't write upstrokes very well if at all.
I Haven't read all the comments so I don't know if any other caligraphers have commented, but my two cents are, for your first time... Well done.! You maybe missed a step ore two and did things a little differently than I would have, but you created a very serviceable pen and ink and were able to explain the process in a way that will allow many others to do likewise. In my book, that's a win. Keep up the great work.
you can make black ink from collecting soot from a candle or oil lamp flame and using a bit of ethanol to suspend it. and dissolve the residual grease.
If you get some play sand and put it a metal container, (soda can, aluminum, etc.) Heat the sand to 500° in the can and let the shaped quill rest in it for a while, it helps keep the rigidity of the shape. I've also heard boiling animal fat with berries, Ash, and other colors can make ink
The viscosity probably IS different, that's why we need to be shown... Lol Seriously though, if it's reasonably possible, I think this is a great idea!!
most ballpoint pens would leak this ink because it's very runny get one of those pens that use ink cartridges and an ink pump (the cartridges with a little pump for refilling)
Kushagra Shrivastava no, it's melting point is WAY higher than its burning point. Under no circumstances can you melt graphite, that's why it's used for crucibles in foundries.
This inks smear very easily until fully dry. To help this along, use a thicker, though more loosely packed paper stock like actual parchment or the type used for watercolor. In addition, very fine sand was also used to soak up any additional ink. Dust it over the finished page (or when you are going to walk away from an unfinished one) and allow it to set for a few seconds.
No, it contains particulates that will clog up your pen. You could use it in pens that could be easily stripped down like a Noodler's Ahab, but even then I'll flush it out as soon as you're done with it. Like India ink, these are not dye based inks, so do not put them into a fountain pen you're afraid of ruining.
Liquid nitrogen has already been tested. You see, if you were actually a fan of this channel you'd know. Maybe you should look it up before you post the comment.
*SesamToast* only certain varieties... Red would be an easier color to extract from the leaves as they gain their color chemically instead of from decomposition.

The liquid produced in this video is just tannic acid one of the components in traditional ink. You'd need to add an Iron salt to it to make what is traditionally known as Iron Gall ink, which was made from oak galls but walnuts work well too. The reason you want to add the iron salts to the tannic acid is because without it the tannins aren't very dark, but the Iron will darken into a true black as it dries.

Try using pokeweed berries it will make a purplish pinkish ink

Yellow onion skins for yellow
Osage orange for yellow

Kushagra Shrivastava no, it's melting point is WAY higher than its burning point. Under no circumstances can you melt graphite, that's why it's used for crucibles in foundries.
Kushagra Shrivastava you can only melt it at a certain pressure, and it doesn't even melt at normal atmospheric pressure, it sublimates
