  • In this video we discuss how to become an Architect in Canada as a Foreign Architect or international architecture graduate?
Also, I wanted to add that if you are getting your education verified through the CACB another outcome of the assessment upon the review by the committee is they may find that the academic qualifications do not meet the requirements of the Canadian Education Standard and the CACB. Make sure to review all the requirements for each program on the CACB website or BEFA website for more details and information. In order to be eligible for the Academic Certification by the CACB your Bachelor of Architecture degree needs to be a minimum of 5 years of study OR the Master of Architecture degree needs to be 3 years of study following an unrelated bachelor's degree OR the masters is 2 years following a 4 year related pre-professional degree which does not preclude variations approved by the CACB. For more information get in touch with the CACB.

Ashley, Ashley Ashley Ashley! 😭 I literally cried after watching this video. You have made one hell of a video here. This information is just in the texts on the website. You gave a voice to it and made it a lot easier. Loved this video, have been feeling really helpless all this time but because of you and your efforts in this video, I feel a lot less stressed. Less views and subscribers might discourage you, but trust me all the efforts you are putting in MATTERS and has the power to change someone's life. Wishing you health and success always.

International Architects usually think of license as something you get it one time and then you are good for life. You have to pay a licence fee of $1000+ every year just to call yourself an Architect BUT you cannot stamp drawings yet!!. If you dont pay one year you will have to start your process again from the Intern Architect phase. YES again. Draftsman for life. I will leave it to Ashley to make another video on the post licensure phase , Certificate of Practice, Prodemnity, Insurance requirements and the cost of running an office.

    • @architecture_tv
      @architecture_tv  2 роки тому

Hi Zee, this is correct you don't necessarily need to get licensed in order to work in the field. It might not be worth it for you but it can bring other opportunities. This really depends on your career goals, I also have a video on this topic here: ua-cam.com/video/qH7pdTURfl4/v-deo.html . There is a licence fee when you are licensed which typically is covered by the practice you are working under (depending on where you work). You also need to maintain your licence yearly with the continuing education program, video here for details: ua-cam.com/video/SldjfryYS4s/v-deo.html . I haven't talked about certificate of practice or insurance requirements but its something that is on my list so its good to see there's interest on these topics. Appreciate the feedback.

@@architecture_tv Thankyou Ashley. I think these requirements are not initially told to the aspiring Architects. What is marketed is usually the 3 E's i.e. Education+ Experience+ Examination. And then its told that you are an Architect. But you are not for all practical purposes. In my experience the whole system is designed to provide young drafstmen to the industry. If people who are informed of the final phases of an Architects licence process many would give second thoughts to this insane process and the people who control it. There is a reason why there are very few women Architects. One senior woman Architect lamented how she had passed her child bearing years in this process.

@@zeekay6067 Hi, your comment was actually the first that highlights the reality of this process. I applied for BEFA program months ago, got the eligibility and now in the Demonstration of Competency phase. Before I enter it, it seemed more doable but now that I got all the details it seems like I have to do a Master's thesis project without having a mentor and paying almost a semester's worth of money for something I'm not even sure it's gonna be happening in the end. Just feeling really lost.
I was wondering if anybody has gone through this BEFA program and came out successfully in the end.
and furthermore does the licensure helps in getting a higher paid job or not
      Thanks

Can I legaly work as an intern or junior architect in an office in Canada after graduating in my home country and moving to canada while I start the process of getting my license or do I need to do my application, wait for the answer to see if my degree matches with the canadian requirements, study the extra courses, do the exams and then finally be able to start working and complete the 3720 hours? In other words, can I legaly work for a while without the license if my mentor in the office is signing the projects while I take my license? That's a very confuse process for me, in my country we just need to graduate to have our national license.

Hi Mike, if you're already a licensed architect in your country you could transfer that experience, in order to get licensed in Canada (through the BEFA program). However, if you are not licensed in your country and have min. 5 year bachelor of architecture degree you'd get your education certified by the CACB. Once your education is certified you can become an intern architect. Once you are an intern you can begin logging your experience, back logging experience is not allowed at least in Ontario however you could check with your jurisdiction for details. I hope this helps.

Hi Teyjanveer, if your Bachelor in Architecture is a minimum of a 5 year degree then you're eligible to get your education verified by the CACB. If your degree is not a 5 year degree or more then you need to get a masters degree from an accredited program. In the following video I talk about the 12 accredited programs in Canada for masters; ua-cam.com/video/6pw2PjCV8kk/v-deo.html
      I hope this helps.

    Greetings from India.
Your videos are really really helpful. However, I have a query. I am looking forward to getting an education from the Canadian University in Masters in Architecture. On the contrary I am currently pursuing MS in project management. So, I believe this increasing gap in architecture might create issues to get into the university for M. Arch. Is it still possible to get an education from the University with an increasing gap? Or can I still get an education from an accredited university??

    • @architecture_tv
      @architecture_tv  3 роки тому +3

Hi Amjad! You are welcome 😊 I'm happy to hear the content is helpful. Appreciate the feedback. The mandatory Canadian experience is required for option 2 in the video which is if you’re a foreign licensed architect in your country. If this applies to you, then you would go through the BEFA certification program. And apart of that program you need 6 months of relevant Canadian experience in order to be eligible. The BEFA program certifies your experience and education since you're a foreign licensed architect in your country. You do not need to become an Intern Architect with this scenario once complete you are an Architect. If you are not a licensed Architect but hold a B.Arch or M.Arch from a program that is not accredited from CACB or NAAB then you would follow option 1 in the video where you'd get your education certified through the CACB and then you can become an Intern Architect, no mandatory Canadian experience is required with this scenario. For the BEFA program eligibility refer to this link: befa-aeve.ca/eligibility/

Hi Ashley, I hope you're doing well. I have been watching your videos ever since FROM my home country and has been very hopeful.
I moved to Canada recently to continue my architecture career. Being a licensed architect from India and holding a B.Arch degree does require my credentials accredited by CACB; thanks to all your videos and information. But, I would like to have a deeper clarity on the matter.
I am currently enrolled on Architecture technology, an Advanced Diploma course (2 years) from Centennial College. From the looks of it, I am of the impression that once I am graduated, I must have my credentials evaluated by CACB, post passing the evaluation, enter an Internship program supervised under a licensed architect and then have my Exac test for my license.
Hoping the stages mentioned above are right, if not, I would really like to have your advice and correction(above all).
Lastly, as we viewers say, you have been a huge help and guide to us all.
    Thank you so much.

The Certification Coordinator contact is info@cacb.ca . If you are already licensed in your country as an Architect, you should look into the BEFA program and contact the program coordinator for information about your situation (befa-aeve.ca/). Also, since you are in Ontario I would also look into the OAA website and contact them for information (oaa.on.ca/) they can clarify the process. I do my best to share information however you must also do your homework and look into the information further since everyone has a unique situation. Please clarify and double check the information with the program coordinators and the program/associations since they know best.

      @@ar.princepreetsingh2835 Hey!!
I would recommend you to watch Ashley's video about this topic
      ua-cam.com/video/WfQ0Vx7Uol0/v-deo.html
It is a very informative video about the procedure of how to become a licensed architect in canada without a masters.
      1. Converting your education from India to Canada through application process via CACB.
      2. Converting your Indian license to Canadian license but you need minimum 7 years of Experience I guess.
I will still recommend you to watch her video from the link above.
I think obtaining a masters degree will also help but in this case as well as the 1st case I mentioned you need to complete 3720 hours as an architectural intern and then admit yourself in an examination for your license.

Hi Ashley, thanks for the helpful video.
I am a B.arch graduate and licensed practising architect in my country with 4 years work experience. I started working in 2017 but got my license in 2018. I have worked as a Junior architect as well as an Assistant Professor.
So basically i don't have 7 years of experience. But I'm not a fresh graduate either. Would I have to go for the 1st or 2nd option? Is it possible for me to do the second option?
    Looking fwd for your reply

@@luvannoyingorange sorry for the late reply just catching up on comments. I believe I answered this question on another video from you. Hi Dayanie! In order to become an intern architect you need to meet the academic requirements however you could still work in the industry as a designer, project manager, etc. You don't need to be a licensed architect or be an intern architect to work in the field.
