@@nout4269 The Fuji 18-55 is actually a solid zoom, my favourite kit lens by far. The F2.8 on the short end is pretty useful and it holds low apertures until pretty far through the range. But my first lens was a prime because it was during the film era, and all zooms were pants unless you spent a horrendous amount of money (and even then...). Before the digital 18-55 became the defacto, the 50mm 1.8 was pretty much the lens everyone started with.
A lot of people confused about Crop Factor. 50mm on APS-C give you a comparable FOV as a 75mm on FF. Depth of Field also needs to be converted so your DOF is comparable to F/1.5 FF. However when it comes to light gathering and exposure, the lens is a true F/1. That means that at any given ISO you will be able to shoot faster shutter speeds than your usual F/1.4 FF glass. When it comes to image quality, it is true that APS-C sensors on average produce 1 more stop of total noise (or twice as much noise) than FF at any given ISO within the same technological generation. However having more noise DOES NOT effect your camera settings for exposure. STOP coupling Lens performance with Sensor Size. They are two different things, sensor sizes does not make a lens turn into a different lens. None of this matters BTW. If you want good photos, having a larger sensor and low F-Stops don't matter. What matters most is lighting and composition. Taking a photo at base ISO at night at a Round Table Pizza using the house lights with a Medium Format Camera will still produce a terrible image because overhead florescent lighting is terrible. No gear in the world will save you from a terrible looking photo. I think most people should invest in off camera strobes and lighting equipment before investing in Lenses.

Ok, I will say the comparison between a Leica lens designed for full frame and a Fuji lens designed for APS-C is a little apples to oranges. It's easier for a lens designed for a smaller image circle to garner lower F-numbers. In reality, the Fuji 50mm f/1.0 would be more comparable to a full-frame 75mm f/1.5 (in terms of AoV and DoF), which if you look at Sigma's 85mm f/1.4 ART lens, you can see the size and weight are closer in class.

That’s what Brandon said but I’m not sure I agree, just look at the eyebrows. The 56 is definitely sharper, or perhaps it grabbed focus in a different spot.
I mean, the 35mm and 50mm options for a first lens are usually aiming for full frame - on APS-C we're talking about 23mm and 35mm. The 50mm f/1 is equivalent to a 75mm f/1.5 while the 56mm is equivalent to ~85mm f/1.8. That's nothing you'd choose as a first lens unless you very much know you only want to do portraits. The additional weight is not really important for hiking or travelling - it's a portrait lens after all, you use it on location or in the studio. It might be a point if you'd need to carry it around all day though. The additional noise is imho not an issue during a wedding - there are more noises around you so whatever. I found the 56mm f/1.2 slightly sharper actually - the focus point was set differently. Just compare the eyebrows. Manually focussing an f/1 lens is ... a challenge. I would not want to do this with modern day cameras unless it's a Leica M with the rangefinder system. It would still be quie a challenge to nail the focus. The actual advantage of the 50mm f/1 is the extra light for the focus system. The bokeh won't change much. I find the focal length to be quite odd though. Personally, I rather stick with the 56mm because of the 85mm equivalency, significantly lower price and less weight. Overall for me it's the more sensible choice.
When people first get a camera, they look for a 35mm or 50mm full frame equivalent. However, Fuji X bodies have a 1.5x crop factor, so that 50mm lens has a 75mm FF equivalent. That said, its still a 50mm lens, and behaves like a 50mm lens (depth of field vs. f-stop, etc.).
F/1 sounds amazing until you realize that with the crop factor it's basically a 75mm f/1.5 so it's slower than a full frame with an f/1.4 lens. Great optics are great, but if it was a full frame f/1 lens that would be really impressive. The reason the leica looks softer is because it's meant for use with a full frame sensor. With a crop sensor camera you're zooming in on the center of the lens, magnifying any defects. The leica can let in more than a full stop more on a full frame sensored camera thus the crazy high price.
The FOV is a 75mm and the DoF is converted to an F/1.5. But the exposure is at an F/1. So it's not "slower" than a full frame F/1.4 lens since the "speed" of an aperture has to do with exposure not DoF. Now if you want to say that an APS-C has about 1-Stop more noise than FF at any given ISO, then that would be true. But that doesn't make the lens any less "slower" or any less impressive. This is a very impressive lens specs wise irregardless of sensor format.
This is actually a full frame equivalent 75mm f1.5. You have to apply the crop factor (which is 1.5 because of APS-C) to the focal length und the aperture.
When I see a new video from Short Circuit, I watch. When it is about Fuji's new 50mm f1.0 lens, I love! (my photography/PC lurkering desires are complete).
Hey Brandon, how about a series teaching us more about photography and videography? Genuine and sincere request from a regular viewer and I guess many other who watch your videos. Really love the camera stuff from you.
The Leica lens that you keep saying is "soft" if very sharp, you're just focused on his nose. The DOF at F/1 is significant enough that you lose focus from the nose to the eyes. Even at f 1.8 you can see the focus loose if your focus point is on the nose.
@Savage Poet aye buddy, as some who lives thousands of km from the nearest place that use imperial units. I have to say that you must be able to do that to distance and height (miles, feet, inches and yards) but other than that when it comes to ounces and pounds, I rarely ever use them thus doing it on the fly is almost impossible.
Guys, Construction noise is not a big deal when we watch videos... but if you do care enough, you could try to process the mic's audio with NVidia Broadcast, you've already review it and it can do magic for this
F1.5 in terms of DoF due to crop factor but still F1 for exposure purposes. Shooting an F1 will still yield faster shutter speeds at any given ISO than FF F1.4 glass.
Yeah, for DoF/Bokeh it's not impressive at all, cause it's a f1.5, but for Exposure it's a f1. And that my boy, no one have achieved with built-in autofocus yet, except for Fuji.
@@SeanWashPhoto i mean, a full frame camera has a (about) 1.5 times larger sensor, meaning about 1.5² times more light ... so this checks out as well as about an f1.5 lens That doesn't make the lens any less impressive, it still physically is an f1.0 lens... WITH autofocus !
I remember when I had no idea what Brandon was talking about but I watched his videos anyway, because he delivered them so well. Now I am able to keep up with just about everything he says and would love if LMG put him at the head of a camera channel. That said, I don't share his passion for APS-C. Full frame is where the fun is at. An F1 loses all appeal when you realise it's not full frame. I don't think a channel dominated by crop sensor content would appeal to most camera enthusiasts.
As an owner of the XT-4 with the 56mm F1.2, this lens isn't worth the upgrade. If I didn't already own the 56mm I'd definitely be wanting to get the 50mm F1.0 for a prime lens in this focal length. Great video.
I just picked up a very well used Nikon 200-400 f/4G VR ii. That 7.5 lb monstrosity makes every other lens (even my 70-200 f/2.8 VR ii) feel light in comparison. It's all about the perspective/comparison.
I just bought my first camera (canon m6 mk2) and I would honestly think the kit lens is the one that most people should start with. I could be wrong but I imagine that a zoom lens is much more beginner friendly for most people. Mine came with a 15-45mm and ill probably buy another zoom lens for distant shots before investing in a prime lens. Just an opinion from a complete noob so please correct me if I’m wrong.
Brandon, pls make your own channel. And *review* cameras and lenses on that, not just unbox. We need more of you. You can also make videos on how to shoot, how you do it and what to use.
I personally like the look of the Leica more, but I would much rather get the Fuji lens. There are autofocus adapters for Leica M to Nikon Z and Sony M mount, so I'd be interested to see that.
a) that aperture ring does sound lovely b) doesn’t give a “50mm portrait look”. It’s a 75mm f/1.5 equivalent lens...and given the preponderance of 85 1.4 lenses, not actually all that special at the end of the day (except to Fuji users). And also: The Leica Noctilux is a full frame lens, making the comparison a bit shaky.
It is special for apsc users. And it does give a 50mm portrait look. This is an apsc lens. And it is a 50mm lens. So it is pretty much the definition of a "50mm portrait look" for apsc users

It was hard to tell, but it looked a bit like you might have been focused on his nose with the leica lens (and not his eyes). The Leica lens that you keep saying is "soft" if very sharp, you're just focused on his nose. The DOF at F/1 is significant enough that you lose focus from the nose to the eyes. Even at f 1.8 you can see the focus loose if your focus point is on the nose.
Me: Ones hold my moms Camera with a 50-250mm Lens
Also Me: Ah Yes intersting. Very Important for Me
For those who are wondering what is that song in the background it is AGST - Reality and the one after is AGST - Distant.
Brandon: LOOK HOW HEAVY THIS LENS IS!
Me: You know damn well how much a 58mm Noct weighs!
The photo comparisons at the end of the video really helped me to understand the differences much better. Really great addition to the format.
This guy is right behind Anthony.
Congrats dude✌️
I got my first camera a couple months back with the kit (12-32) and a 35-100 lens. This guy keeps me interested
2:52 "And just for [SHARP CUT] giggles" - we all know what was cut there
2:52 ish
@@smillman437 you're right, fixed it!
Ha, I didn't see the cut. I was going to comment on how well he self-edited what he was going to say without a pause.
We. Need. More. Brandon.
Love watching this man talk enthusiastically about this stuff. Please keep it up.
I love watching videos of things u can never afford
Think broke, act broke, stay broke, my friend.
fuji? my precious fujifilm? on an ltt video? two of my loves finally together
Brandon:" if your shooting an animal with it it can scare them off"
The only animals you can shoot with a 50mm is your pet
I stopped paying attention to camera since I lost my manual camera 15 years ago. I still love these videos :D
Start using SI units please, you just delay the inevitable.
I mean they are cannadians their country is already pretty far into the swap, them using pounds is just to ponder to their US audience.
2:36 "Every gram matters", Brandon, you were so close!
@Savage Poet American and their sense of superiority🙄. You should be educated enough to know that imperial unit users are the minority.
@Savage Poet Yes, but it does not change the fact that it's annoying that u have to do it😂
I’ve recently gotten into photography and knowing quite a bit about cameras makes these videos so enjoyable, get this man his own channel🥰
As a cannon fanboy, this is the first time I’ve legit been jealous of Fuji shooters.
I might have to give Fuji a try in the future
Canon has got a F1.0 50mm too. It's an L lens (obviously), and they go for about $2800 on eBay.
@@herranton along with a ton of other glass that fuji dosent offer. But if it has Canon on it, its gonna be pricy.
@@herranton yea, but the used canon ones are almost double the price of a new Fuji lens lol!
Guys, Construction noise is not a big deal when we watch videos... but if you do care enough, you could try to process the mic's audio with NVidia Broadcast, you've already review it and it can do magic for this
F1 50mm on APS-C is equivalent to 75mm at 1.5. Not that impressive.
i totally agree
F1.5 in terms of DoF due to crop factor but still F1 for exposure purposes. Shooting an F1 will still yield faster shutter speeds at any given ISO than FF F1.4 glass.
Yes
Yeah, for DoF/Bokeh it's not impressive at all, cause it's a f1.5, but for Exposure it's a f1. And that my boy, no one have achieved with built-in autofocus yet, except for Fuji.
@@SeanWashPhoto i mean, a full frame camera has a (about) 1.5 times larger sensor, meaning about 1.5² times more light ... so this checks out as well as about an f1.5 lens
That doesn't make the lens any less impressive, it still physically is an f1.0 lens... WITH autofocus !
Thank you LTT! I appreciate all the Brandon videos. I don't even own a nice camera but always enjoy his take on the hardware!
Honestly, I'll take the sharpness of the f/1.2 over a slightly lower aperture. Also, the Leica isn't worth the hype.
yeah! this seems very much like a cinema option
I really appreciate how much you nerd out on cameras and lenses!
Me: i can just film with the camera on my phone
Ltt:YOUR COMMITING A SIN AGAINST HUMANITY
I remember when I had no idea what Brandon was talking about but I watched his videos anyway, because he delivered them so well.
Now I am able to keep up with just about everything he says and would love if LMG put him at the head of a camera channel.
That said, I don't share his passion for APS-C. Full frame is where the fun is at. An F1 loses all appeal when you realise it's not full frame.
I don't think a channel dominated by crop sensor content would appeal to most camera enthusiasts.
Nothing on chromatic aberration, focus breathing, lowlight performance (actual t-stops).... there is so much missing. Pretty disappointing video tbh.
Not a review more a first look
@@DroptheBassForJesusSake yes Linus said this a few times shortcircuit is not a review Chanel its a unboxing and first look Chanel
As an owner of the XT-4 with the 56mm F1.2, this lens isn't worth the upgrade. If I didn't already own the 56mm I'd definitely be wanting to get the 50mm F1.0 for a prime lens in this focal length. Great video.
Brandon: "Wow can you guys hear that?"
Editor: "lemme just put some cool music over that"
I just picked up a very well used Nikon 200-400 f/4G VR ii. That 7.5 lb monstrosity makes every other lens (even my 70-200 f/2.8 VR ii) feel light in comparison. It's all about the perspective/comparison.
idk man but a 1500 dollar lens is NOT a "first lens". and its only apc? yikes
Hes talking about 50 mm focal distance not the specific lens
I just bought my first camera (canon m6 mk2) and I would honestly think the kit lens is the one that most people should start with. I could be wrong but I imagine that a zoom lens is much more beginner friendly for most people. Mine came with a 15-45mm and ill probably buy another zoom lens for distant shots before investing in a prime lens. Just an opinion from a complete noob so please correct me if I’m wrong.
Also, really not understanding the hate towards APSC.
@@lachlanh7911 zoom lenses are really good to start out. to learn camera stuff as well
@@TheRebelBagel nah. 1500 bucks for an apsc lens is just too much
Using capture one will give you significantly sharper results and better textures/contrast
Never been this early before
So now what
@@fepethepenguin8287 I don't know, I didn't think I'd get this far
@@-SP. the void
Add the crop factor and the lens is a 75mm
F/1.5 and that is very good .
9:45 looking at the eyebrows, it doesn't look sharper...
My thought exactly....
I like that he states: "Honestly, ..."
Doesn't seem real honest to me....
I really need Brandon to make a video walking me through the basics of photography
Who takes lens test shots at raised ISO?
small pp
ISO400 Ain't that bad these days.
Brandon, pls make your own channel. And *review* cameras and lenses on that, not just unbox. We need more of you. You can also make videos on how to shoot, how you do it and what to use.
Pls use grams/kg as well next time.
I dont get pounds. And i dont care enough to go convert it somewhere.
2.2 lb/kg, so 1.77 lb = 805g
I personally like the look of the Leica more, but I would much rather get the Fuji lens. There are autofocus adapters for Leica M to Nikon Z and Sony M mount, so I'd be interested to see that.
All the shots look out of focus, honestly i don't think i learned much of anything with this "review".
a) that aperture ring does sound lovely
b) doesn’t give a “50mm portrait look”.
@@MsIrrealis he is pertaining to the viewing angle. the fuji f1.0 is practically a portrait lens.
I'm not interested in photography so I'mma leave a like then head out.
Love the quality of your reviews, Brandon and team. Not a Fuji guy, but damn that lens is lovely.
Leica looked a million times better.
As a guy who at my 2nd job ever, just after high school, ran a 1-hour photo department inside a drugstore: I heard APS and immediately went into fight or flight mode.
Awesome video, Brandon! (I'll have to re-watch in 4k) A little suggestion - it would be great if you had a small (stylistically standardized) tool-tip with imperial-metric conversion when you mention measurements such as weight
as a fuji user myself, thats onr of my wishlist
hmmm so its not really f1 then if its apsc
I know nothing about cameras and photography, but still love Brandon's videos
Brandon is one of the best hosts at LMG I really wish he would do more hosting on the main channel. I couldn't care less about cameras and camera equipment, but I always watch a video with him hosting because he seems to be able to describe and detail what he is thinking so clearly.
First setup: EOS 80D Pentax 50mm f1.7 with adapter.
All manual 👌🏿
Loved the ASMR tech sounds in this video. Good editing 👏🏻
It was hard to tell, but it looked a bit like you might have been focused on his nose with the leica lens (and not his eyes). At 1.0 I assume the dof is extraordinarily shallow, and prob hard to nail the focus with- which might explain how "soft" the leica looked. Or maybe I'm off base- hard to tell! The Fuji looks awesome in any case!
I have nothing to do with cameras, I have absolutly no interest with Video or picture Produktion...
But I still wach every Video with Brandon the Full time, because I like the Story telling, the way He presents his Points, how He hosts the Video...
I can't say anything about the actual Informations given, but great besides that, great Videos guys:)
Fantastic, so glad to see camera stuff again!
ShortCricuit is like Unbox Therapy but less annoying
Brandon you have come a looong way from the first videos you made good jobe, much better on camera. It would be nice if you made a video for beginners to understand all the terms. Keep up the good work
