I am the .1% of people in the number of times someone has watched this movie. My mom and I watched this movie when i was growing up, and i basically never stopped. One of the great whelmers. I dont pretend it's a great movie, but I've never been disappointed. Monte gets the idea of a good time movie. Im a movie snob but I dont find it useful to be out on mediocre movies immediatly. If you dont have a favorite mediocre movie I dont trust you.
I just saw the intro, and before going any further, I have to say that I fucking love this movie. It's one of my comfort watches, don't know what to watch while having lunch? Put on top gear of course, but if I want fiction, I go for this movie, it gave me the sames vibes of the Mummy
Unbelievably painful watch, lmao (the film, not this episode). I couldn't understand where it was going, didn't know or care about any of the characters, I also thought the 2 blond vikings were just 1 guy for quite a long time lol 😭 To be fair, it was so bad that it took me 5 days to finish it... 15-20 mins per day. Holy moly, that was ROUGH, but it was worth it for this banger episode lol
28:00 - The Swedish Actor that Thorin calls "We got Peter O'Tool at home" is not even top 3 Peter O'Tool in Sweden. He was never a good actor. He is just belowed because he has a nice voice
Dan Carlin mentions this in his recent history of the Vikings. He suggested that this took place near Russia or eastern Europe. The excerpts he mentioned of the historical writings were pretty interesting.
I can only assume that many commenters have some personal relationship with this movie. I watched this for the first time, and it was not redeemed by any aspect.
It's weird for me that noone acknowledged the fact that this is the story of Beowulf that was very heavily changed. I understand that the story itself maybe isn't that popular but there were few adaptation's of this epic so I thought that someone would connect the dots when the movie's main hero's name is literally Beowulf.
13th Warrior is a great movie to watch when you really sick and you hallucinating so you can imagine then things that this movie is missing. Then it's 11/10
Monte this isnt influenced by beowful it IS BEOWULF. Crichton merged the real arabic documents with the tale of beowulf to prove a point to academics he disliked
Also thorns idea of this being horror is accurate. The novel is very horror. The bear people are crichtons idea of a surviving clan of Neanderthals so they're many times stronger than the vikings, basically chimp like strength and brutality where they tear people from the villages apart. Somewhat supernatural horror with a very loose basis in reality. Basically the cannibals have supernatural strength because they're supposed to be Neanderthals. This makes it make way more sense how hard they are to deal with. Why the film abandoned the core element of the novel I don't know.
11:45 you find it funny but the actor is literally speaking a mix of norwegian and english at the same time there. The idea that seems to not be understood is that this is a timelaps he is using time to learn the language.
I'm sure you don't take suggestions but I'll leave one here anyways, for you guys or anyone reading this comment. I'd love to hear your guys opinion on the Russian movie Brat. It's insane what they managed to do with a budget of (I think) 100k dollars and it managed get into my list of best movies ever. Maybe it's because of the budget restrictions but it feels different and fresh compared to most movies.
Dont know what I was getting into with this one, but it certainly was not listening to broken Norwegian (for the most part) spoken by actual Norwegians. Was that supposed to be a way to make it sound less modern? In any case, as someone who knows the Scandinavian languages, Thank you Monte for having me sit through this dogshit movie. You certainly suceeded in selecting a bad one, you liking it I cannot understand. I also like "these kinds of movies" but my god they still need to be bordering on being good...
I loved this movie as a teenager and love it even more today. Unsubscribed here, sorry guys.. but will pay for Montes OnlyFans from now on ❤ PS: as German speaker you can understand a lot of the Vikings language as they speak mostly different Scandinavian languages in the movie. Also there are parts in Ancient Greek and Latin, which I had to learn at school.. where are the guys now that told me I will never use this in life again? 😅 So it's a nice bit for multilingual people.. btw I love the way they solved the problem of different languages spoken, but the viewer needs to understand what's going on.. in the best way any movie ever did. Or are we now all just fine that every Nazi, Viking or whatever speaks with a British accent 😂
so much disrespect on this wonderful film. On the last fight the thing i like was the pre fight when they start the payers and plus the king who is dying walking in front of the wall to wait for the general. Those thing i enjoy. The guy calling him little brother was a cool character. I think the learning a new language work a bit cause it was a very long trip and they were constantly telling the same stories so he started to pick it up as they travel. It has happen in real life (a bit slower) but if they were traveling for months it is possible. As noted the character was a lover not a fighter. a city guy that may had never travel with the muslim army of that time.
29:30 you complain about the actors yet you are literally saying that antonio should not have been in here yet the people who actually are from the culture whom actually are from the areas the movie is set you want people who sound like you to be there. You can NOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.
The thing with fire scene and language learning is that it was supposed to represent MANY nights around the fire... he had time to learn it, cause their journey took a few months. Now, some gifted language learners can pick up basics of the language pretty quickly, but then again if he was so gifted why didn't he speak Latin? Who cares, it's a great movie. Edit: That Thorin guy is insufferable though. First off, Spaniards were under Arab occupation for centuries and many of them have an Arabic, or I should say general Mediterranean look to them that they share with Arabs. Antonio Banderas was perfect for the role. Secondly, his character was a noble from the Baghdad court, highly educated but also very religious, which I think the movie shows pretty well. He wasn't a modern insert, what is he talking about?! And thirdly, Arabic men do wear a kind of eyeliner, I forgot what it's called, for protection from the Sun glare (like cheetah's tear drop line) and also as an esthetic and cultural thing. He is wrong, but loudly wrong, which is the worst kind. Ugh. Second edit: Yeah, I'm dipping before halfway point. Those two are so full of bad takes. There are a lot of things that can be said about the flaws of the movie, but they are wrong on so many points so far that it's not worth my time. And they mock Roger Ebert, jeez; pot calling the kettle black much, huh? Hang in there Monte.
Mentioning The Last Samurai brings up the idea of doing a Four Play Samurai movie arc. Also, The 13th Warrior is a boring, sleep inducing movie that is also badly named.
@@birdy4215maybe it wasn't private but just non public and he somehow put the correct link? That way he'd have the ability to see it even before it went public and it would explain things

CERVEZA CRYSTALLLLLL
10 minutes in when Thorin comes with the sharif quotes I was choking of laughter already. Amazing episode thank you!!
Monte has been right every single episode. Never waver Monte, 13th warrior is an absolute banger and SO IS THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
This is the content that makes my 12 hour shifts bearable.
Completely off topic but, at some point we need a David Lynch arc. ty for all your hard work gentlemen.
absolute banger episode couldn't stop laughing and smiling the whole time!
Bro 12 min in and already banger
13th Warrior is one of the greatest films of all time

One of my favourite movies of all time
13th warrior is amazing
Can we please do another month of this
If I had to choose a movie for Spit Roast it would be "DragonHeart"
I'm torn between Team America and The Man From Earth... I feel like most ppl dont like them, but I may be wrong
You are absolutely right, I should have picked DragonHeart
Goat movie
Blade 3, or Stargate hard to pick between them
Great idea for an arc, this has become my favorite podcast
I just saw the intro, and before going any further, I have to say that I fucking love this movie. It's one of my comfort watches, don't know what to watch while having lunch? Put on top gear of course, but if I want fiction, I go for this movie, it gave me the sames vibes of the Mummy

The campfire-observe-and-learn-norwegian is so hilariously bad that I instantly fell in love
No reference to beowulf from monte in the beginning?? Crazy
Great episode guys, always brings a smile to my face to see 2 of you suffer.
"I like the swordplay" Monte on a podcast called Fourplay.
I have so much brainrot I cracked up every time they called Antonio Banderas "Little brother"
I wanted to like this. I thought it was gonna be like beowulf based on the first half of the movie. Pretty rough.
Byzantine Emperor, btw. Not king.
This was a fantastic idea for an arc. Absolutely hilarious episode!
a very fraudulent empire
Dan Carlin mentions this in his recent history of the Vikings. He suggested that this took place near Russia or eastern Europe. The excerpts he mentioned of the historical writings were pretty interesting.
The novel is sheer brilliance as Crichton mimicks the writing style of the actual real accounts author
I can only assume that many commenters have some personal relationship with this movie. I watched this for the first time, and it was not redeemed by any aspect.
I FUCKING COULDNT STOP LAUGHING WHEN ROGER EBERT APPEARED AT 1:24:00. Spit Roast is so goated
The Ulfric storm cloak bit sent me.
I LISTENED !
What a banger episode
Guilty pleasure movie right there
Same here!

I too am a 13th warrior enjoyer
these 3 are best to listen to.
Can't wait for revolver. Love that movie
@1:17:00 Looking forward to the eggers arc!
That would be amazing, Ari aster and Jordan pelee too

I can't wait for the Roger Ebert 4 star film lmao, knowing his taste it has to be absolutely horrendous
Idk why it felt like watching Willow
Maybe not the best cinema has to offer.. not even close.. but still a really fun movie.
So Michael Crichton is another George Lucas type incredible ideas, but execution isn't their specialty

I cannot wait for the roast of Roger Ebert. I trust you'll be using ai to have him defend his opinions

13.... Hmm. Was Nomura involved with this movie?
I’m curious if they think equilibrium with Christian bale is a good or bad movie 😂
I'd say it's right down the middle
It's one of those super cool ones when you are a teenager, but makes for a dreadful re-watch when you've grown older and know better.

fuck me, if you can get past the initial ridiculous opening 20 mins it's actually not a bad movie. I actually didn't hate it.
Wholeheartedly disagree with thorin, ridley scott is a fuckin hack

If you ever need 4 movies to just shit on for a month, the michael crichton movies would be bangers
curmudgeons grasping at straws.
This movie is awesome.
