August 14th, 2017 -- For my 100th outings of this year, I decided to explore and fish the pond in the Mason's Mill Park, in Willow Grove, PA. And at the time, little I knew that that tiny little pond held so many mysteries!!! Heh.
Seriously, though...the presence of such a Species of fish in the suburbs of Philadelphia is a major discovery, folks! This is very likely the only watershed around here this type of fish in it. On one hand, it is really cool to see them around. On the other hand, the community was certainly very irresponsible for introducing an invasive Species of fish there. Sigh...

I have been fishing the Philadelphia + surrounding areas for the past 6 years, catching Panfish left and right! I have lost count of how many *Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus),* *Redbreast Sunfish (Lepomis auritus),* *Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus),* and *Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus)* I have caught!!! In-between, I have only landed 4-5 *Warmouth (Lepomis gulosus).*
And when I thought that nothing else would surprise me, another Species shows up! Wow...
Hi Leo I live 15 minutes from this pond. Maybe one day we can set something up to fish together. I would love to meet you
Hit me back if you interested
Extreme Philly Fishing fish Pinchot park in pa
If I would have known youd never caught them I could have put you on some giants along timw ago
How's it going EPF, what's the difference from the redear and pumpkin seed? I've caught this fish just recently in the San Joaquin river here in California and not to sure how to tell this fish apart
Never seen a black Sunfish before. You should have taken him for your fish tank Leo!
Joseph Evotil I agree
Joseph Evotil the pond was catch and release
That was a Warmouth www.tnfish.org/FishIdentificationID_TWRA/FullWebImages/WarmouthMaleTellicoNegus.jpg
No. It looks like a Sunfish with melanism.
he got rid of the tank
What's up Leo. I'm the guy bass fishing in the background at the end of this video. It was a surprise to see you fishing Masons Mill pond but an absolute pleasure to finally meet you been watching your videos for a few years now keep posting and tight lines.
💯💪👊100k is a few cast away congrats🎉🎊keep goin strong!!!💯
less then a 1000 to go. All of Leo's dedication and enthusiasm for outdoor recreational fishing is on verge of earning a well deserved silver plaque! Keep it up Leo!
It's crazy to watch him get so excited over that Redear. But if I caught a P-Seed here in Ga I guess I would be too.
Hey Leo! I know it's been awhile, I've been quite busy, sorry about that! Great video! I love these small ponds like this. So much fun to fish. Hope all is well with you, and I'm looking forward to future uploads!
Leo I think you could say that red ear that you caught was Melanistic
Wow! Nice video! Beautiful catches, success for you man!
looks like a shellcracker. Great video Leo. Tight lines
Leo is the fishing GOAT!!!
The "mystery fish" is most likely a melanistic red-eared sunfish. Very cool!
"I went all the way to Chattanooga..." LOL I know the feeling, I was planning a road trip to get my first lake trout and caught one in a small river 3 miles from my house. Nice little fishing trip, Leo!
Thanks for sharing, keep 'em coming!
There’s red ears in Michigan, Missouri and Arizona cuz Ive lived in all three states and have caught them in all three states. They get pretty big too. Pretty sure sun fish spawn twice a year. I have never caught or seen a green sun fish till I lived in Missouri. I was like wtf is this.
I saw one while fishing today and I was wondering what is was and I was about to go to sleep and I came across ur video which I find crazy and awesome !
:) Great vid
Wonderful video I love watching your videos before I go to bed
Everyone just gonna ignore the fact that at 5:37 the fish walked on water?? Lol
Great job like always. I am also surprised to see the red ear sunfish. I have caught them in South Carolina. Thank you.
Hi Extreme Philly Fishing, that was a nice video. Do you know that Bluegills are sponging on the full moon in the summer. Keep the videos coming. That was a good learning place for begining kids fishing. God Bless you and your Family. Take care and stay safe and cool.
My uncle used to fish the Lakes at FDR Park. He used to say the best time to fish those lakes was when a the overflow channels from the Navy Yard were open, you never knew what was in there. He used to catch Salt Water fish in the lakes.
Good job on those PA Redears man... First time I've ever heard of them being caught around Philly. 618 Fishing just hit 100K today, you're next! Just a little bit away! I also got some watershed recommendations for ya!

12:07 its a shiny redear!! Best shiny pokemon yet
Wow, thanks Leo. I live a little bit south of Chicago and I have been catching red ears at my local pond for as long as I can remember, I have always wondered what they were because the ones that I see people catch look much different than the ones in my area, but now that I see that you caught one that looks the same as the ones that I have caught, I can finally add it to my species list. Thanks again for identifying it
They look like redears to me. That's really cool that you found some in your area. When they get big they are fantastic fighters. We were lucky enough to catch a couple master class size this spring and I thought I had a 2lb bass on the line!
Congratz with the 100 days of fishing aniversary
I was wondering why you were so surprised lol. North Carolina has them but they are rare too, caught a 1.5 lb shell on the Catawba river
I love your videos Leo. I needed this video upload tonight. I just had a really late night at work and I was really stressed and tired till I got the notification that you uploaded a new video. So thank you Leo. Keep doing what your doing
Great video man👍
that would be a great pond to fly fish.
My neighbor and myself use to cut school and go fishing there. And watch out for Massy the Giant Pond Serpent that come out at dusk.
The intro never gets old
"Heey WHATSUP UP UA-cam" 😂🙌🏼 awesome video leo that was one beautiful red ear congrats on the catch! Tight lines 🎣
Please come to Laurel Acres Park. It has a wide variety of fish, also there are a couple trout and there are big carp. (Mount Laurel, NJ)
awesome video leo! always cool to see you catch multi species. that sure was an odd redear. but beautiful black color. anyways tight lines my friend and god bless
great video Leo keep it up man.
I grew up down the road from their and used to fish their all the time...go back around sunset their are some decent 2-3 lb channel cats in their that make for a lot of fun on light tackle!
Congrats leo thats awesome cant wait to finish this video and i also love it when you fish with 1rod1reel
@Extremephillyfishing, it could also be a hybrid with a regular bluegill.
515 damn Leo bounced that fish right off a rock 😂
Love the video ❤
Happy 100th outing leo!
,wowww nice catch EPF
Extreme Philly Fishing. Fresh haircut dawg!!
Great video
I caught red ear sunfish in a lake out in clear field county. Great video man
For those of you who do not have time, 11:37
Why did u ruin the surprise
Kassim Khreis lol "for those who do not have time"
He did it for the impatient people
Or for the people who have to go to work, or have kids to look after, but ya know, whatever lets you sleep at night.
DnChIEf but it ruins it for the people that are scrolling through the comments
DnChIEf also know UA-camrs make more money when people watch more of the vid.
I have been there many times - always good fun
You should head north sometime Leo, to the Mighty Niagara River in NY. Particularly Grand Island, there are some very nice spots to enjoy the warmer weather. Multi species and Bream, Cats, Gamefish, pick a target already, easy man take it easy. We have alot to offer in a small area, of coarse I would be honored to be your guide to the honey holes.
my biggest redear sunfish is almost 12 inches I cought an hour Southwest of Chicago when I find the pic of it I'll send it to you Leo awesome video fish on
There's some big largemouth in there too. Last time I fished there, there was a lot of duck weed.
love all ur vids by the way
Awesome!!
This video makes me want to check out the pond near my house, i always thought it was too small to hold fish but you never know until you try!!! I'm bringing pink senkos and worms, if theres fish around something should happen!
I ride my bike around that pond and look into it all the time. Never fished it though. There are a couple nice Bass in there. When I was a kid I used to pretty much live in pennypack park down by Welsh road. I could tell you some awesome stories about some of the fish I've seen and caught in there over the years. It's sad, the creek is nothing like it used to be after they removed the dam at Rhawn street.
You only need 1200 more subs to reach 100k! Congratulations Leo!
Lol Leo we have a bunch here in the mid nueces river in southwest texas. Our daughters catch a ton of them :) along with the rio grande perch and tilapia.
I love ur Vids keep it up
today is a good day cuz i fished a 70 lbs red tail, 60 lbs tambaqui and leo posted a video best day man
Golden /CS:GO where do you live
Definitely South America, maybe miami
lying Brazilian
@@jedimasterjoe5386 not gonna lie o probrably lied, i was a small child and a big liar
Leo, you should do a full blown species assembly of that place. Maybe you find a few more cool species!
Just got home from a long day of tiring fishing. I start the video and I start to fall asleep... HEYY WHATS UP YOUTUUUUUUUBE.
Leo you where right on it being a Red Eared sun fish but in this case the fish is melanistic (only black pigment) that is a pretty rare thing to see especially in pan fish.
Ethan Johnson Outdoors [Herping and Fishing] every one I've caught has had some type of black spots or patches I don't think it is that rare
Kolby Smith The one Leo caught was all black which is rare spots are seen often.
Normally the males are black/dark colored here in Georgia where I catch them in ponds.
No Red Ear it's a Warmouth www.tnfish.org/FishIdentificationID_TWRA/FullWebImages/WarmouthMaleTellicoNegus.jpg
warmouth don't have as obvious of an "ear" as shown on the fish in the video. Plus he otherwise only got Red Ear.
Hey Leo, you sort of have me stumped. You have to be One of the most knowledgeable people I know on UA-cam when it comes to fish. I live one state to the west of you in northeast Ohio. Our bluegill here will spawn up to 3 times a year, depending on the weather and a couple other factors thrown in. A man who pond raises fish for peoples ponds told me this over 10 years ago. When my brother-in-law got some for his pond, lo and behold they have bred at least twice a year. Would things be that different between states? I'm curious. I talked to him and his are breeding again starting 1 1/2 weeks ago.
Leo, that big red ear you caught is probably a state record
That's near Warminster nice never fished there. Looks cool
I love your channel
the mystery fish is actually a redspotted sunfish. when they get older they have a tiny strip of orange or red on the earflap just like a shellcracker does, but a redspotted sunfish also has blood red eyes, just like a warmouth. i catch them here in Missouri. I catch two of them on my episode 77 of my fishing channel, called southeast missouri river fanatic, and even i thought they were warmouth until i got home and watched the video
love fishing for shellcrackers. they fight good for the sunfish species and they are good eatin
We have some in our ponds, about 45 minutes north of philly
Awsome vids.....you gotta do a species assessment at tippins pond in pennsauken nj....good spot
Leo u missed out on an incredible spot right next to the pond on creek road... the pennypack creek flows right behind there through the pennypack trust and is a public fishing hole, has dozens of different species, many massive holdover rainbow trout (18+ inches), very large golden shiners, and some of the largest most aggressive bass I've ever seen some coming close to 5 pounds, there are even many large carp and koi a bit farther downstream the creek that r a bit hard to get through all the sunfish but they are possible to catch. Overall one of if not the best public fishing spots in the area and I'd deffinatly recommend that u try it out for a multispecies / possible pb bass video
It is within walking distance from mason mill pond too around a 5-10 minute walk depending on how u decide to get there
First hi I love your fishing videos
about the redear sunfish, often times people illegally stock ponds with fish from different bodies of water, for instance, I went fishing in a pond that I guess had pike in it, even though it was definitely not big enough for pike.
Holy cow! So many weird species?!?!
That mystery sunfish is a very dark redear
Try Audry Lake South Jersy, I grew up there and it has some of the largest blue gill, prettymuch guaranteed you will catch a sunfish every cast.
The redear is way out of native range but they're really common to stock in ponds
Great video! You gotta love multispecies fishing! What my channel is all about!
Damn son. Fish on! Recent sub. But I think you need to go for bigger fish once in awhile.
I've caught a 11.5 inch red ear
My brother caught a 10 inch and I caught one bigger than his but didn't get a measurement
Caught my first Red Ear today, at this pond today!
Fish on Oahu, lake wilson
Lots of catfish, large mouth, cichlids, peacock bass, huge agressive sucker fish, and much more
Had a die off last weekend at my local pond, pulled out about 5-6 gills / sunfish / pumpkinseeds about the size of that one at 2:57 this past Monday along with dozens of smaller ones, sad sight when you see 130-140 Panfish and a few bass floating on the surface, because I know from personal experience how that affects the sheds for years to come. :(
WickedDealer what caused the die off?
It was a factor of things, the people that own the pond told me they turned there aerators off at night to cut down on the power bill, that lack of extra air combined with cold front rains that dropped the temp like 25-30 degrees for hours and a small algae bloom that's been breaking out all summer is what most likely lead to this.
Usually its algae blooms sucking all the oxygen out of the water
I think it's a green sunfish and nutcracker hybrid because at lake arrowhead the adult green sunfish are black like that so who knows
You should fish at asaph run in pa it is a great creek for rainbow brook and brown trout
You should fish lakeview cemetery sometime. That place is stacked with everything
You should come fish in the French Broad watershed in WNC!
Extremely philly fishing we have them in wisconsin
There's crappie, American eels, catfish, bass lm/sm, koi, carp, everything
Never stop and can you please come to Mississippi 👍
do you suggest a book or website for finding out species of fish
Hi Leo you are the best
First comment and like
Love the videos KEEP it up
Hey Leo what do you do for work, because you must do something and you get to fish so much I would love to be able to do that when I'm a little older. Love your videos early congrats on 100k!!!
He finally found a shiny Pokémon! 😂
We have red ear all over Missouri :)
My panfish reel is a abu garcia cardinal with braided line its a nice little reel
Redears are stocked by the dnr and pond owners around here to keep the snail population down. the snails are a big part of the lifecycle of a parasite that infects sunfish, so the redears eat the snails and help keep the parasite down.
I have unquestionably caught more than a couple red ears in the pennypack
Caught one in cedar lake Carbondale also I'm the guy who found the creek with the longear
I just had a really good idea..you should take all your pictures of all the different variations of the same fish...and make an amp so people can identify different pan fish and stuff like that..of course you would not have to use all your pictures but you know what I mean you catch the drift
