August 20th, 2017 -- My outing number 103 was kind of a disaster, hah. Initially, I was supposed to go to the Schuylkill River to re-film my video for the KastKing Perigee II rods, since the previous footage of it was corrupted! D:
However, upon arrival, I realized that I forgot my reels at home!!! UGH! I guess the lack of sleep is really getting to me....Lol. So, in the end, I had to adapt to the situation. Since I had my leader line and some tackle for rigs, I decided to do a Handlining 101 video for you folks!
I hope you guys enjoy this improvised fishing session to be quite productive.

this is how i got started on fishing, as a kid a friend of mine introduced me to handlining and some times i would make my own hooks out of sewing needles GOOD TIMES!
I learned from Jamaicans an even better way to throw the line. Hold it on your side, swing it back until you feel the weight of your bait or sinker and whip it forward. It is faster and goes out farther if you need it to. I used to do it like you too(lots of people do, like Cubans).

One of the most best fishing challenges I seen so far..
From my experience once you get eels you gotta move your line. They group on a bait spots over time. When I'm targeting them I chum up the bank with ham and then wait for the first eel. Then within a few minutes I have 3+ on the same spot.

You've inspired me to try hand lining. What knot did you use to tie off to the pole? You said 3 knots, but what kind?
I remember doing this when I was a kid b/c my family couldn't afford a fishing pole for me I would catch bass on hand lining I would cut my hands a lot but it was worth it
I've handlined for huge blue cats and freshwater drum. It's always really exciting fishing this way.
Great video Leo. I haven't had a chance to hit the river where I live here in S.E. Iowa because of flooding. I have gotten in some bow fishing where they are up in fields where it is shallow and away from the heavy current. Like to get as many carp as I can early on while the water is cool and the fish haven't got that fatty flesh along the back that makes them taste bad. If I catch any in the summer I always trim that away to help get rid of some the river taste. I usually do a lot of fishing this time of year at pre spawn for catfish. I use a bobber and cut bait and float it along the rip rap rocks along the river. When the bobber stops or starts moving up stream you got one. We catfish with hand lines tied to tree saplings along the bank. We tie a piece of clothing on them and then watch for when the cloth isn't sticking up have caught some big cats doing that. My biggest was 37.4# about four years ago. Hope you have all the luck with the fishing Leo. Larry

very informative video Leo, I do handlining as well but at the beach. Do you have any tips for handlining at the beach?
I love fishing like that because when I was small, it was either that or the bamboo cane pole. That's all I had. Often fished for smaller fish with 6lbs test handline and a small float/strike indicator made from a duck or other bird feather. Fished like you too, lol
In the early 90's we used to charter a boat called the Gay Lady out of Cape May. For trolling bluefish he ran 2 outriggers, 2 rods on the side, and 2 hand lines with planer boards off the stern. Pulling in 10-15 pounders with heavy gloves was a serious battle and shoulders workout.
What gear ratio were you using ? 8:1:1? Nice video man. :)
If you go to Bristol borough there is a wharf down there with a pier and some dock but you can't fishin the docks but you can fish on the pier and there's catfish perch eels and in the fall the bigger catfish and decent stripers are there you should give it a shot some time

Next time I fish there, I'll be on the lookout for a one eyed catfish. It would be really funny if I caught it again. I wonder how much weight it would gain between your catching it and down the road. You should have told the girl taking the picture of the eel to wait for it to smile. Haha. In Germany the eel is an delicious meal and it is forbidden to use it by bait (cause the french catch the most of them out of the atlantic Ocean on there way to us) i could not catch just one eel the whole season 2017☹️

I noticed you didn't wear gloves. IDK if this was a fishernan's tale, but when I was first learning to fish I was told to wear gloves because the line would cut my hand. Is this just a fishing myth or do only some lines do that?
Spartan 351 It would have to be a giant and high pound test of line...but yes it can burn or cut you if you try to hold on to a giant but that is why he tied it off on the poll.

Very imformative video tried hand line fishing one time when my rod broke and i didnt wanna go home but my set up was all wrong so i was losing fish left and right

I HAD to add this story.....A couple years ago I lived in this apartment complex; this guy lived there who was from the country of Barain(sp?0. I knew a good fishing spot and he had never been bass fishing. Soooooooo, he shows up with a ball of flour and water and just a hand line. I was using my purple lizard and cleaning up. I told him to try one and put it on for him. I told him to throw it next to this bug rock........BOOM!!! BIG HUGE BASS!!!! He starts screaming. I swear I saw smoke coming from his fingers. I ran over, grabbed the line, and quickly wrapped it around my hand. I pulled it in and he was freaked! I laughed my ass off and said, "I told you".........I heard him telling the story at the pool the next weekend........True story!
