    I am a cheap prepper. 😂
I buy the Walmart brand canned meats. Chicken, beef, pork, store brand spam and corned beef hash, and starkist white albacore tuna in water. I don't really worry about preservatives to much. Been eating it most of my life anyway.
I do stock canned chili, beef stews, and soups with meat.
I don't have any ground beef. They don't have it here locally.
Plus the cheaper brands allows me to buy more. I do have some of the better brands but not much. It will be my special occasion meals.😂
Some brands do taste better but I have plenty of stuff to season the meal to make it better.
A can of shredded beef mixed with couple packs brown gravy mix over rice or instant potatoes and can of corn or green beans and you have a great meal.
When you hungry and it is all you have you will eat it.

Hey Grey! I know canned stuff stays good forever. What about tuna in pouches?

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  7 місяців тому +6

With pouches, they range from 3-5 years. I usually keep them in rotation in a 2 year cycle, I like them because they contain more meat most of the time, and they are great to take on a hike or camping trip also lighter than cans and easier to open.

Most canned foods last dang near indefinitely per the USDA. They do lose nutritional value and can get a bit mushy. Theirs much more to it, I can send you an article if you email me. It's in the description of all my videos. But to answer your questions, specifically, my cabs usually have a BBD of 5 years

Evening Grey. I have seen a few adds from a couple of survival food companies selling a survival protein kit that is no more than 28 oz cans of a variety of meats for big dollars. People can buy the same in keystone meats for less than half the price. If a person takes just a little bit of time, they could save huge amounts of money by comparing products. ✔️

I like the canned salmon from Aldi, most brands of wild caught tuna is good too. Keystone is terrific if you can get it in your area without having it shipped. I always wind up with dented cans if they go through the mail. Spam is another good one to have on hand, and the dak hams are just as versatile. I usually can up all of my beef and pork at home to save money, and to control what is put in the jars. Tuna and pulled pork pouches are great for on the go too.

We have been stocking up on keystone as well for the past 6 years we get as much as e can from there website and occasionally we will find it at our local grocery store. I prefer them then most as they add no nasty preservatives outside of natural sea salt and most folks don't understand our bodies need salt as its an essential electrolyte.

YES!! Canned meat is awesome because it has a long shelf life! Skipjack tuna (has the least mercury), canned salmon, sardines, beef, chicken, SPAM, ham. I like the Member's Mark Chicken from Sam's club. It tastes the best and there is only chicken, water and salt. I like Walmart's canned pork, it's not obvious on the label, but it is in BBQ sauce and I really like the flavor. I only have a few cans of Keystone beef and I bought those before the prices went sky high. Walmart also has a good canned beef.

I can my own chicken, beef ( ground and roast), and pork. But I have in my stockpile plenty of salmon, mackeral, tuna, sardines, clams, shrimp, crabmeat, Spam, corned beef and tons of Chunky and Progresso soup ( most bought on sale for $.99). I try to buy whatever is highest in protein.
I buy Bumblebee solid white albacore tuna in water. I like the big chunks of tuna over the mushy (to me) regular tuna, although I will eat it if the albacore gets too expensive.
I also have a lot of chili ... with and without beans (I prefer Wolf's), beef stew, and chicken and dumplings. Gotta have some comfort foods 😋

No real favorites for me, I try to buy what I'll use throughout the year w/o too many downside impacts on my health. ie not too much salt or fat. Unfortunately picking up the healthy'ish canned meats means lower calories per serving but the upside it that they get used and typically don't go bad.
I pick up canned chicken from Costco or Sam's when they have instant saving promotions. I'll use it for chicken salad, chicken spaghetti sauce, sloppy joes (not my favorite use), etc. These are the most used items for me. But again, low calories per unit so there is less bang for your buck there.
Canned Spam from Costco or grocery stores (they're BOGO every now and then). I usually buy the Turkey spam w/ lower sodium (which again, misses out on almost half the calories). I've found I will fry the Turkey Spam up for a breakfast sandwich whereas the regular spam just goes out-of-date or gets donated before I use it.
ALDI gets canned ham every now and then for an extremely good price. I have maybe 40+ set aside which typically have a best by date of 2.5-3.5 years in the future from when I purchased. These are hard to find and sell out fast so since I shop at Aldi every week or two, I just make a habit of looking for them each time I go. These bake pretty well if you dress them up w/ pineapple and brown sugar or whatever spices you like. And they're only a pound so you don't get stuck eating them for a week when you open one. Other folks have told me they slice up well for sandwiches if you have a deli slicer. I have not tried that.
I do have some Salmon which I use for Salmon cakes but since I'm the only that eats them, I tend not to buy too many. Tuna is thoroughly hated in our family so I've pretty much given up on storing that. Whenever I purchased it, it just sat there until it was close to expiration and I'd end up donating it (a lot of food centers throw out out-dated food).
I have tried canned pork and roast beef thinking that I'll make bbq for sandwiches. Unfortunately I have yet to find a recipe that compares to the "smoked" pork I get from my Ninja Wood-fire grill. I even tried it with sloppy joe mix but still, something seems lacking. As a result, I don't buy pork or roast beef very often. The prices have to be really good and I just don't see that anymore while there are still sales on chicken and spam.
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HEADS-UP ON THE KEYSTONE GROUND BEEF!!! I was completely unaware that Keystone had canned beef. And although it seems to have a bit more fat than I typically like but if I can find it for a decent price, I'll definitely stock up. Having such an easy option for spaghetti sauce or sloppy joe mix plus being able to put 4 or 5 cases away for a rainy day, to supplement freeze-dried and dehydrated food, is good for my peace of mind.
    Thanks for the video

I have the following items in our pantries:
Valley Fresh canned chicken - both 10 oz cans and 7 oz packets. Absolutely the best taste imho
    Corn beef hash
Hormel Black label bacon and their Bacon Bits in the smaller packets. Who doesn't need/like bacon?
Hormel Smoked canned Ham in the smaller cans for beans, breakfast omelets, etc
    DAK canned hams
    Valley fresh canned Turkey
Chili, no beans and with beans
    Assorted canned soups
    Tuna, only in water
    Shrimp, only in water*
    Crabmeat, only in water*
    Keystone ground beef*
    Keystone pork*
    * I could only afford a few cans for special events
I do can a lot of beef "chunks", pork loins, ground beef, pork sausage patties, sweet Italian sausage, chicken, turkey, and assorted "meals in jars", as well as homemade stews and soups.
We pretty much eat all of the above in our daily diet. I just rotate and replace as needed.

Keystone beef, ground beef, turkey, chicken and pork in the larger cans. Other best value/special sale price store brands to make my money stretch without any particular names: sardines/tuna in water, salmon, mackerel, luncheon loaf, canned hams, dried beef in small glass jars, (canned chili, beef stew, beef or chicken hot tamales) from Dollar tree is cheaper than anywhere else!! The so called WM great value canned roast beef (really isn't roast beef, more like beef roast chunks with more water than meat)...won't buy anymore of those! Anchovies in glass jars in oil (just 2 for salads). Previous years back, have some potted meat and vienna sausages from Save alot but won't buy more since the price gouging and shrinkflation started. I know a lot of the brands may have a high salt content, but when I add potatoes to the mix, they'll absorb the salt. Most things can be rinsed off to get rid of the excess salt or stick a piece of raw tater into the container/bowl and let it set awhile to absorb, then toss the tater in with whatever you're cooking.

Now ,Keystone Foods, is a different company entirely and is owned by Tyson Foods which is backed by it's major shareholders, including Vanguard Group Inc, BlackRock Inc., but in its list of shareholders is no Bill Gates who does own a few fake meat companies. Also, John W. Tyson and his relatives control the majority of the company's stock outside of the shareholders I listed.
