I would really appreciate it if you keep demonstrating ways that you can improvise during food prep. There have been times when I've had to evacuate my home, and all I had access to was a coffee maker in a hotel room. There's real world situations where you just have to improvise.

    • @jutde

Keep a go-bag with a butane or electric cooktop and cook set in it?
If home evacuation is something you deal with regularly, there’s no reason you can’t stay prepared for an extended stay in a hotel room.

    • @OtherSarah2
      @OtherSarah2 3 місяці тому +5

A hotel room iron doubles as a griddle/grill/toaster, and the coffee maker will reheat soup. Carry a roll of foil in, and you can make hobo-packet meals and even bake biscuits.

A little over $10 each, honestly, is a pretty decent deal. You can't even get a hamburger value meal for that price these days it seems. And if you do it certainly won't come with desert.

@@dadbudgetadventures It is 11.75 each or 12.75 each if you include your little expensive mylar bags. 1261 calories but way too much of it comes from sugar and things expire quickly. Weighs 1.2lbs without any of your extra packaging or utensils and it is big an MRE that I get is the size of your little churros bag. Not ideal. I can get MREs with higher calorie counts, that are lighter, last longer and with a heater and utensils for 7 dollars at my local army navy surplus store. I don't think this is a great idea especially with how fast the food dies. Unless you are taking these camping and rotating pretty often it seems like a terrible idea, a solution in search of a problem.

Congrats on 10K. Just found your channel. For a bit of a challenge, try an Asian market MRE. G7 3in1 coffee is pretty good. Roasted Peas with either garlic or wasabi (hot/spicy) flavors are good. Other suggestions are Tocino flavored Spam, desserts/drinks featuring Mango, Calamansi (similar to lemon), Jack Fruit (acquired taste), or Ube (purple yam). A good side would be kimchi (I’m partial to Kkakdugi) although finding a shelf stable package (most kimchi is bottled or plastic carton requiring refrigeration) will be challenging.

I've grabbed those tamales for camping from whole foods individually, but if you like them, it ends up being much more economical to buy the dozen or so from amazon. I think they were $5 for one individual packet @ WF. I enjoy them so having them on hand is great

New subscriber. I do a lot of camping and I have been enjoying your content, particularly the MRE content.
Could you do a video going in to what criteria you look at in terms of what you choose to include or not include? I know you recently started adding nutritional information (definitely keep doing that!) but are you considering that when you are building these, or are you just trying to build a tasty meal? There's a TON out there on backpacking food, but it feels like the space is more empty when it comes to car camping or emergency MRE / food.
Also, it seems like you have been doing this awhile. Maybe do a video series on how to get started making homemade MREs (what type and where to find pouches, heating elements, cooking methods, etc)
Just my thoughts on the kinds of things I'd like to watch, obviously you do you, but if you want suggestions on what one viewer would be interested in, there you go.

Great ideas. Mostly I’m just showing the items I’m discovering as options. The meals aren’t meant to be copied as much as just inspire thought beyond the tuna pouch and protein bar approach.

We have been making our own MREs for quite a while now and make everything able to make and eat with minimal effort and can be used on the fly. One thing we do is to dehydrate meat and vegetables and seal in a small mylar bag with a bullion cube so that all you have to do is add boiling water and enjoy

Question: what did your first product search say on amazon? Did you start with “tamales”?
Just curious as to where I’d start when I build one of my own.
I need a starting word or phrase so I don’t waste a ton of time.
    Thanks
The Itaki is not on Amazon but available directly from Itaki.
I use a gas one dual fuel single burner camp stove that runs on either propane or butane (the tall slender cans) I have a big Jackery but that’s for other things that can only be used with electricity. I got that two burner brs stove and the propane (lindal valve) adapter too. I can’t wait to use it

I have a storm rock 500watt power station. It will happily power all my dash mini cookers ( I have a small collection, they're cute and quick to use). I also have a 12 volt electric lunchbox that can also use 110ac. Everyone can do their own research on what to buy and use. My budget won't go $10+ a day, so I choose less expensive foods while maintaining protein. I do watch your videos- I think I'll add a "fancy mre" day to my menus for something special once in a while.

Love your channel, I love finding individual packets for meals. We live in a humid climate and once a jar of a powdered item is opened its just a short time till it starts caking up. Check out Folgers French Vanilla Cappuccino sticks , 4 to a box for about $1.75 (great to add to weak coffee ) . It's the only powdered Folgers worth buying. Also Lonolife beef bone broth powder is really good. Great as a mug of hot broth , or use to add more beef flavor to chili, stew or a gravy.
