- A boxer gives a lesson.
THE HOOK is used with permission from Nick Flugge. Learn more at nickflugge.com.
A young man comes into a gym for a one-to-one boxing lesson with a washed up fighter, but finds himself in a confrontation that proves more than either man bargained for -- and will change both their lives forever.
Director and writer Nick Flugge's quirky comedy short employs deft writing and ace performances to explore masculinity in an offbeat, humorous way.
Dialogue is brought to vivid life with brisk pacing and crack comic timing, landing LOL-worthy one-liners while hinting at the deeper conflicts underlining both main characters and their interaction with one another. The two main actors play off one another beautifully, bringing both moments of doubt and humor and making for a pleasure to watch.
The premise of the film may be compact and limited to a precise time and place, but THE HOOK is able to tease out the internal conflicts and tension that often come with being a man -- all while landing sharply drawn laughs.
The kid might not be athletic but he’s definitely got guts. I think the dad recognizes this.
Oh dear it was still so awkward though lol , they're total opposites .
What wonderful comic acting and timing - climbing over the rope had me dying - and the eventual resigned roll under the first rope - please!!! - that was beautiful!
Damn!!! Why do I want to see this wimpy man become a champion lol. That hook he landed was so nice and unexpected. Someone please make this a movie.
He inherited that punch.
they have. many times. the warrior, million dollar baby, the hammer, rocky 1-5, fighter. etc etc. its common.
they already did its called million dollar baby.
8:44 That boy has talent! Able to talk without moving his jaw at all!
You should hear his covers! (btw, your's are mighty impressive too! Been subbed for a long time!)
I thought the same thing.
This should not be a movie. It should be a TV series. Great job!
Or at least see what happens the next day. :)
"Ed what?"
"Ed...ward?"
"Skipping...." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I laughed out loud at this one. It is actually very funny. Excellent understated humour.
i loled too. didn't see it coming at all.
That's pretty brave combining sports with comedy. Not too many would think to combine two seperate genres like these into one. Very few were able to pull that off, with Rookie of the Year being an example of that. So your onto something with this film, keep going.
The way the guy turned up dressed like he was going to the beach had me giggling inwardly from the very beginning.
Skipping cracked me up !!
i died at that part. it was so hilarious.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes
Beautiful movie. The hook punch that his son threw (the actual punch, as well as the metaphorical hook that the young dad must have been scared of getting a woman pregnant and so ran away from the 'fight') really threw him off!
That moment when you meet a man who has never done a pushup in his life.
The entry into the ring was hilarious.
🤣🤣🤣
like plss my guy go under 💀 me asf tho just staring at him 😭
This is the best one I think I have seen. The way it is put together and the back and forth of the father and son are just hilarious!!!! They are made for each other :)))
British humour is magnificent! This was classic!!!
"Same time tomorrow." Brilliant!!! :-)
how is that, humor
what
@@cowstrum5334 gosh i cannot stand it when people do not get things that are so blatantly obvious.
@@sonquatsch8585 well I'm not familiar with British humor so I'm sorry I don't get something, plus there's quite a few other people who obviously don't get how that's funny.
@@cowstrum5334 the funny thing is that he couldent admit it whit emotion like an american. He had to keep his pride but still consede so he said it like that.
C'mon .. there has to be a part 2 ~ and a part 3, maybe even a 4? (This was only the trailer, surely)
This should be a movie
it is
it may be short but it's still a movie
@@ian-c.01 A feature-length movie. The kid, though gangly and awkward, clearly has some talent and instinct. Maybe daddy redeems himself by training Edward into a prizefighter?
Yep it's called cobra Kai.
Make it a series and I'm all in.
@@backseatgamer7367 - Take a look at my Comment.. I too saw the Similiarity between this Video and Cobra Kai with the Older Boxer being Johnny Lawrence except we know that Johnny Lawrence is not MIguel's Biological Father. Although he is is as far as we know- Robbie's Biological Son
"skipping"... hilarious.
4,
I only got 2. 😂
And he counted them
"is this still a one to one if you're over there?" - "it feels more like a one" LOLOL
The guy playing the dad in this sketch is no joke as far as hitting the hitting the heavy bag even though he's probably around 50 years old. His up until now unknown son plays an uncoordinated doofus with absolutely no fighting ability as well as anyone could. The break through happens when the son is "hitting" the heavy bag. Dad can't take it anymore and begins in earnest to train his son. Dad plays the emotionally untouchable tough guy quite well but at that end of the sketch he breaks down as the son is leaving. "Same time tomorrow"
Another fine sketch from Omeleto
This was great, and the bagwork in the first few seconds was very good. Would love to see the second lesson.
The Hook got HOOKED! Best part ever.Generation meeting generation.
It is my firm belief that every boy should experience training in the art form of physical combat, especially boys with high amounts of energy.
And girl, or whatever the heck gender they identify as. At least enough training that, under urgent physical or social danger, they have some tools at hand and are not shocked when reality is not a "safe space" where words or gestures that trigger you are part of the real world.
Nico Kadel-Garcia boys learn better after being exercised. also boys tend to get bullied more. i definately understand your point of view. got to add the standard boilerplate answer that the left demands.
@@pullybungieharder Girls, in general, don't have the same need of combat training as boys, in general. This is "in general", so don't get all PC at me and get triggered. Ofc you have the exceptions.
@@lmoral222 You do realize as a society we frown on solving issues through violence. I'm all for everyone having more exercise in their daily life, but I don't think putting a stigma on fighting as a masculine thing is a good thing.
@@clownkid I mean you're free to have your opinion, so am I. The purpose of such training goes beyond the surface level of "violence" - which is a common misconception by those uneducated in the core aspects of this art form. Instead, proper combat training, by a good mentor, teaches boys lessons in becoming a real man - traits such as mental, emotional and physical fortitude, discipline, respect and the knowledge of when sh*t goes down, and their number is called - that they have the capacity to step up when it is needed - to protect themselves and those they love. Depending where you live, it is needed more than other places. Too many mislead youth wielding guns. Too many un-mentored boys never attaining true masculinity, instead, lashing out and acting upon pure emotional distress - yelling, screaming, crying, hitting females, or bullying weaker males - all traits of a child. Not saying this type of training is the only way - when it's done right, however, you can't deny it's effectiveness in shaping boys into men. It's a powerful tool and art form that I fear is fading out. Society needs fighters and men on the side of good - I hope that isn't something you wouldn't agree with.
The closing scene with the door was absolutely priceless!! Hahaha... so well done... Nice touch!!
🤦♀🤣
Fantastic! Would be happy to have paid money to see a film with this story and level of humor.
This is worthy to be made a full movie
Who thinks this is AMAZING?!!
No, not "amazing." But excellent. Terrific performances. Interesting visuals. Clever and effective sound track. One of the best shorts I've seen on Omeleto.
@@elbinkogrande Agree, agree, agree and agree.
With Russell Howard and evandard holfield then yes.
Me!
Wow. This has to be one of my favorites.
The other one's I like are - Drawcard, Sons of April, A Modest defeat, The Loyalist, Noise, Doorstep, Stop. "Drawcard is A MUST watch!!
Oh that's sweet.. he meets his father 😍
Spoiler Alert!
ya why did you have to spoil it for me?
@@SpiderSparta56 why are you reading the comments before you watch the video? you deserve what you got
@@dirtdiv3r that's a mean thing to say to me. I love to read the comments section as well as the description of the video before watching it. What's wrong with that?
@@SpiderSparta56 I would have thought you would have figured out what's wrong with that... spoilers.
Brilliant two-hander, never put a foot wrong. I've never before waited with bated breath to see someone open a door.
"Well there's two kinds of skipping, I like both kinds!"
Honestly i thought there would be a twist at end buildup. The kid was playing the entire time, and he was in fact a killer boxer, just acted to spend time with pops
REALLY liked this one. Well done.
His comedic timing was perfect! Are we seeing future stars here?
I absolutely love how he can't get out 😂😂😂
I'll give the kid a 10 and the background music 5 stars.
I agree, I don't really get it. I was hoping for a bit more and it just leaves everything no where.
I dont get you. Its like ur just telling me nothing.
+Punk Blaster I like your comments
What's not to get? Lmao it ain't rocket science here....
This reminded me a little of Cobra Kai with the older Boxer being Johnny Lawrence. Then again in Cobra Kai- MIguel doesn't know who his father is. I think it will turn out to be Terry Silver or maybe the other Villiam from KK3
Damn it. I need a continuation.
Was an excellent film, being short leaves the mind working on what happens next. All in your head keeps your imagination going.
This one had me laughing. Good one Omeleto!
I really wish this could have been longer. Would love to see what happened the next day.
Disney? Universal? Bloody marvel! I dont care someone please make this into a full on movie
Best advice I got as a young man. Never go down on a woman in the morning.
Well I've lived life on the edge.😂
MrFunMonk cmon who doesn’t like a bit of blood pie time to time
This is great! Funny, touching....human. Great film making! Prost!
This was outstanding. Pretty good acting. Nice Hook Kid!
I wish there was more of this
I agree with the rest this is a knockout! Nice one -two combination! Beautifully written and acted! Bravo!
The hook got hooked, brillant
Excellent!
That's why every boy needs a dad... to teach him what a pair is for
OK so what did you guys and girls think of this short
Welcome to Cobra Kai...
Good vid I love these vids so much
LOL That was really funny!
Why isnt this a movie ??? The premise has never been done has it ? A weak, bullied posh boy abandoned by his estranged boxer dad ? I dont think so. Maybe '' The warrior '' but there was no weak posh kid angle.
There must be a genetic component to boxing skill.
There are many. Speed, endurance, reach, and testosterone levels make a big difference.
Omeleto Rules OK........but I must control my watching; these excellent films are just too addictive! So, it's three films and out..................ok, you got me; it's four films and out. Anyone doing better?.
These are such great shorts!
lol I just started boxing. I relate to this kid on a deep level
Loved it!
That was lovely. Thank you :-)
4:17 - that would be me. SMH. Forget the rope. LOL
I loved this!
Oh my gosh this Actor is hilarious!
And I can't stand physical comedy. But this guy pulls it off.
funny funny stuff, good acting and writing
This one hit close to home.
Cover up and circle under the jab.
*BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!*
I love this!
Great music.
Bravo! Encore!! That was great!!!
My favorite by far😂
Sorry for a possible spoiler
was that his dad?
Bravo Alley --> In my opinion, The Hook was the young man's father. The young man, I guess was abandoned by the washed up boxer years ago, just tried to find a way to approach him and get to know him.
@@istvanszabo3229 Also it turned out The Hook didn't leave his mother (as she said to their son), but more likely she dumped The Hook for some reason, so now they have a chance to reconnect over her lies.
Bravo Alley
Yes. Obviously.
That was great.
Had to look through the comments to understand that I just watched a comedy.
How the F did he manage to get his picture out with boxing gloves
skipping had me dying :D
Rumor has it this kid is still trying to open that door to this day.
-the sound of ochestrated fireworks and fainting women follows the sentence-
Nice piece, thanks.
Dopey.
But the kid
used his hook.
In the blood?
2:03 Priceless!
Brilliant!!!👏👏👏🥇🏆
Stay 'safe' and be well everyone, blessed be~xo🌻
How does such a woman manage to look like a man??

Is this a documentary on a soy boy?
he is indeed rusty
o yes i am hook same time tomorrow

That was really funny and poignant. Well done.
Loved it.
Who are they supposed to be? Brothers?
Dwayne “the rock” johnson
Awww that was sweet
Cute and admirable.
is this the same makers of the platform?
That was cute
lol. this guy is pretty funny.
There are 2 types of skipping....
That kid pissed me off ;D
brilliant. likely bloody as well.
How did that change his life
The father got his son back, the son found his dad.
Isn't that the boxer from Ip Man 2? Twister?
Too short !
