- MediEvil 's story, visual design, humor, and charm stand the test of time, but Other Ocean's refusal to upgrade the gameplay and include checkpoints makes it a game that is stuck in the past.

Remember when games didnt hold your hand......Medievil remembers. Thanks Sony, keep the PS1 remakes coming. 9/10
This remake is exactly what is supposed to be, the nostalgia of playing this game with an uplift and once collecting all the lost souls unlocking the original game make it a 10/10 for me.
6/10 is a good score for this
8/10 for the original game included
This was the first game that included me to gaming at 5 years old. So I may be bias realistically for the price 8/10 but for me its a 10.
Just completed by full chalice run now!
Probably the reason they didn't did much for the combat was to test the grounds of this franchise.
You lost me when you couldn't pronounce the name correctly
When a reviewer can't even pronounce the name properly, even when it's mentioned countless times in game, makes me think neither the presenter nor the writer know what they're talking about. Long time player of the original and now loving the remake, finding it easier (ironically), GamingBolt, your review is simply generic and well, bad. 😐
I'm so glad this game failed and didn't sell well. Such a poor job.
@@ThatGingerCuntFromTerminator2 is it that bad I haven't played it yet
Same on the IGN review. Pathetic. I unsubscribed from both because of that.
@@ThatGingerCuntFromTerminator2 Why are you glad that it failed?
Fortesk? Come on did you even watch the intro or even listened to a single dialogue made by Gargoyles or warriors in the Hall of Heroes? Says enough about how serious you were when approaching this tiny gem of a game.
"Fortesk"
Guys, come on >_>
I know it doesn't sound right but that is how you pronounce it in French and i could be wrong but I think he's french in the game
Indeed
I swear every channel is pronouncing it that and idk why. If they played the game they would realize literally within the first few minutes that it is pronounced.. fort-i-scew lol
This is the same with some people talking about anime, like naruto. They use some odd ball alternative pronounciation despite how the name or word is pronounced in the source material.
I bet you this guy will pronounce the word queue as k . 'I had to stand in a k today for hours' 🤔
Sorry, but this is poor review. You clearly don't understand the purpose of nostalgic remakes.
"This games stuck in the past, not at all like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 6 or _insert regurgitated property here_ ." What a supreme ass, it's not like the original had bad controls this was probably just reviewed by someone who can't play well.
@@lucamckenn5932 How is the new modern warfare stuck in the past? It made a lot of changes to the cod formula.
@@SlyTF1 The target audience for this are people that love the old game or the original, even if clunky, gameplay style. The fame of emulation goes to show there is a big public out there for it.
What the reviewer fails to realize is that this is simply a new coat of paint on an old game, coupled with the ability to play it on modern hardware, and it's flawless at that.
@@LemonRush7777 tell that to spyro the dragon and the original crash trilogy games. i really dont think that these games are considered as "nostalgia remakes" because they did some major changes and add a couple of new features into the games that cathers to even new fans.
@@lapsedilationdrive3943 What major changes did they make to the Crash remake? Besides add time trails to every game and two extra now complete levels.
"Sir Daniel Fortesk" ... It's Fortesque...
"...hundreds of years ago ... ." ... It was 100 years ago...
Did you even play the game?
nope!!
Actually, they say in the intro “in a time long ago...” and then the peace lasted hundreds of years before Zarok returned. I still don’t think he played the game though
@@jesperjesper955 pretty sure it says the peace lasted 100 years and then the wizard returned
Daniel "4-tes-Q"
Another reviewer that mispronounced his name smh
He says it's right
@@careyunknown3449 Maybe in France where people are too busy getting bulled to care about the rest of us, but everyone else says things the way they're spelled. Better yet, they say it the way everyone in the source material does...
It's pronounced four-tes-cue.
Just bought this. Played original and Medieval 2. Had no idea you can unlock the original game after meeting certain requirements. Brings back good memories. I hope for more remakes. Let's go Parasite Eve🔫
Stark Now THAT'S a game that needs remade more than I can even iterate in words!! 👏👏👏
I was thinking the same thing. Bring on the trilogy!
Parasite Eve's nice but gimme that sweet sweet Legend of Dragoon remaster.
@@lucamckenn5932 yes, but they going to make Legend of Dragoon into a moba with so much micro transactions.
I wish more remakes were like this.
I just unlocked the PS1 version of the game, man I love how they kept it faithful to the original and now this surprise :’)
I only have an x box 😭😭😭
@@Ghost7065
You poor soul.
@@mutalix indeed
this is a real game, not those gambling casinos made by EA/Activision
so basically what your saying is its the way it should be? thanks not everything in the world needs a million new things added to it.
If the reviewer pronounces the name like that, then all of this review’s credibility goes out the window because it clearly tells me that they didn’t pay any sort of attention to this game when they played it.. if they even played it, that is.
He says it right tho
How did you not know his surname when they constantly say it in the game?
Game Journalists in a nutshell; we're bad at videogames, and make you question our intelligence and integrity as reviewers.
Can't ever take anyone discussing anything medievil serious if they pronounce it fortesk literally when the story begins you hear his name and how it's pronounced to get it wrong
The wonky gameplay and no checkpoints, is part of the charm. This was the dark souls of the ps1 era.
Even darksouls has check points in the form of short cuts :/
Perseus Excal If you need checkpoints in this game.....you aren’t a gamer. Pussies
Combo164
Yea, but a level in Dark Souks takes longer than on in Medievil.
@@Rzs31 Agreed. People are too used to having an easy experience. There's zero challenge in games these days.
Perseus Excal I know. It’s pretty sad really. Those are the same people that disconnect when they are losing an online game.
The way how you pronounce Daniel's name tells me you have no idea about the original game's gameplay and story.
Also F checkpoints. This game isn't supposed to be easy.
Sir Dan: "Fortesque! Four-tes-Q!"
Played all day and finished it with all the chalices (didnt do the lost souls thing). I loved it. Plays exactly as the original with awesome graphics and im pretty sure that was the vision for this project. Also.... restarting a level because you lose all your lives was a thing back in the day... git gud, i guess (game is not even that hard, didnt even die once on my playthrough and most levels last like 15-20 minutes......)
Worth doing the lost souls. Please trust me. Do it. I won't spoil it. Just trust me.
wahh no checkpoints wahh they didn't make it easy enough for me - this review
CriminalIntent89 Dunno why you'd even need checkpoints. The levels are long enough to be fun and satisfying but short enough that they can be completed in small sessions.
My thoughts exactly. It's almost like this person has never played an old PS1 game... also the game isn't that hard and the levels are short.
wahh I can't stand they give this shitty game a bad review wahh - you
The original didnt have checkpoint that was part of its charm. Im happy with what they did with the game.
Lot of reviewers not caring for this one... Tis' almost as if they're forced to play a hard & old-school game again AND do it quickly to meet review deadlines, but without the fear of From Soft's rabid fan-base holding their personal annoyance back, or something.
Just a thought. Just seems like a pattern we've seen before, you know?
Mattias Svensson If they gave a from soft souls game a bad score we would riot and shut them down 😈
Dude, did you even play the game? “Fortesk”? I just finished it, loved it just as much now as 20years ago. 10/10 from me
I'd have a heart attack if legacy of Kain gets a remake. Or hell even a bloodrayne 3
As long as it ignored all of BloodRayne 2 or at the very least was set decades earlier.
Hell, give me BloodRayne, too!!!
I would love a legacy of Kain series remake.
Legacy of kain would be dope
I dont get these dumb reviews. It was supposed to be a game stuck in past. It was supposed to imitate the original like how crash bandicoot, spyro remake did. Those clunky controls are intentional. Either you all didnt get the pay check or you're in some serious need of git gud. I'll be buying this game regardless, absolutely loved the demo. Maybe these gaming sites should stop hiring casual journalists
Exactly they want everything to be easy and simple. The second a game actually challenges or punishes players casual journalists are ready to label it bad or broken.
@@noneya8842 they just hire any individual who cant press more than two buttons on a controller
Whats funny is most of these turds never had an issue with Crash trilogy controls which are way more punishing than this and yet somehow they shit on MediEvil like no tomorrow with salt thru the roof. But I get it being a PS exclusive makes these Fortnite xturds barely reaching puberty pussys bleed :)
The guy narrating the video is not the same guy who reviewed it, he just do the narrations, that´s probably why he mispronunciated the name.
The rational (and cheap) gamer in me says wait for a discount/price drop.
However...
The old school gamer in me already purchased this 😁
Stay blessed team gamingbolt 🙏
Git Gud? 🤔
Sekiro and MediEvil should have babies together lol. Love both of these gems. Journalists just cant seem to get along with the #GitGud camp
Gameplay is amazing. I do not understand what problems you have. There is no need for checkpoints. Combat is simple but fun. Controls are smooth. At least I had no problem with it. Well this game is not for everyone it seems.
Yeah I'm at the end of the game and been having a blast! Perfect game for the Halloween season.
Is there a exp growth system for this game. Do you go up levels of power like RPG’s? That’s all I want to know.
I think the remake was fantastic. the combat was great, graphics are amazing, the effects of the weapons beautiful, I honestly only have one complaint, is that they could have maybe added an extra room here and there within a level, like they did in Resurrection, that and maybe add like a secret weapon post game just to have fun, or allow infinite ammo as a reward for getting all Chalices for example. but other than that, it was outstanding and it blew my mind. oh and it's For-tess-cue, not For-tesk (sound wise)
I'm glad they kept the game to its roots, I miss games that are a challenge and don't save every five seconds. When you mess up in a level you know what not to do the second time, that's what keeps me playing this game.
I personally don’t think the levels are long enough warrant checkpoints. Sure you can die in levels, but checkpoints would add a bit too big a “fix” in the other direction.
I’d say the gameplay is dependent on what sort of games you like, because I found it to be fun. Maybe it could’ve been updated, but I found that element good enough. The ability to switch weapons on the fly was a needed addition, but I don’t see how many other changes would have helped. Or an issue depending on how the life bottle situation is handled.
This game is awesome. 10/10 I've never played the first one.
"A Game That is Stuck in the Past" yes it was released in 1998 do you have a point?
Yeah, it shouldn't feel like it released in 1998 lmao.
I guess gaming bolt has become the new IGN.
Is if worth buying a PS4 for it?
I think the answer would be a classic or normal mode choice when you start. Classic would be what this game offers. While normal would have checkpoints and more modern gaming changes. That way you please both types of fan that buy a game like this.
I remember played the original on ps1 and I remember spamming the melee button to death ....and without a lock on feature, it was a lot of cutting air...
That it killed to me ...
I can't understand why they didn't also remake MediEvil 2 and included it, since the other two noteworthy PS remakes (Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy and Spyro Ignited Trilogy) remade the 3 games in one package.
Are there checkpoints or i have to restart the level after I die? ps4 version
I just finished playing this game on the PS4. It was awesome.
Oh I remember this game, I had to choose between this one and Maximo. I got Maximo and its still one of my favorite ps2 games ever. Is this one any good? Or is it more for the nostalgia
Still a great and amazing game. Its great for nostalgia for the people that played it in the past but also a great game in general with it's own charm.
And it's only $30 which imo is a great price
Medievil was ps1
@@Rzs31 i know, I had to choose between one or the other and I never got the chance to play medievil
Maximo has the best gameplay by a mile but, there's just something about Medievil that I still love. It has great atmosphere and it's easily worth the price.
Perfect for Halloween!
Did u play the game or are you reading the script you were given?
Geez. Trashing a remake because it wasn't "remade" enough for your liking... one should at least be able to pronounce the names of the characters. It is what the video started- just as it was, but prettier and with a better camera.
The game is a perfect remaster, It's like im 8 years old again. It is supposed to be like this, because it was the same in the past. Very glad they didnt renewed it and kept faithfull to the original. 10/10
The only problem i had with this game is they didnt include an auto save point. I guess maybe having an option for auto save on or off wouldve fixed that problem
Fantastic game 😉 👍
I get that they were going for the “stay faithful to the original” thing but mechanically this game was very much a product of its time & I agree not reworking the archaic combat system was a bit of a mistake.
MediEvil’s greatest strength was always its aesthetic & charm, not the actual gameplay. This feels like a remake made exclusively for the people who played the original back on PS1 & we are not the ones who need an HD upgrade. Remakes are supposed to draw in new fans & this definitely won’t.
“Sir Daniel Fortesk”
You didn’t really play the game, did you? Like holy crap, you literally learn the hero’s name during the first minute of the opening cutscene AND the actual gameplay. There’s no excuse for that.
best 6 out of 10 ive played in a long time
i get the whole misopportunity to make the gameplay better but its still fun. Flawed but if you cant get use to this then idk what to tell you. Ill never understand the checkpoint argument. My problem with medievil was tat the levels arnt long enough sometimes.
I'm loving it and I bet it's selling better than some reviewers thought it would.
Did it need a day one patch ?
@@wolfman5181...... There was an update when I put the disc in alright. I'm not sure what it was for.
@@chilly6470 do you remember what size it was ?
Playstation or xbox ?
@Sir Galahad oh yeah I forgot is playstation exclusive, thanks for replying. 👍
1st is a name
2nd lack of checkpoint
Level are short if they put checkpoint in game then ppl can finish it in 1 day
To me they just bring nostalgia of old game to current gen, not changing core of game is good thing like you said
Btw good review
This review would make ppl buying this game....
remastered is the same as the original. that's what I want. 10/10
They did a faithful remake and reviewers call it outdated smh. Not every remake has to be changed to be good. I bet this reviewer loves Battle Royals and fps games and hates platformers.
I loved the fact that the game plays exactly like the original.
Everyone was picking up call of duty. I was there for this game. I really wish they would of promoted the game as much as they did for spyro. I'd really love to see an Army men 3d remake.
The PS1 had clunky controls due to tech limitations! Devs need to make reimagining’s (like RE2) instead of pandering to f’n nostalgia.
I haven't played Medievil since '01,before 9/11/01. Lol. Great game. Great memories. Great times. Legendary,Fortesque. ☠💀
Game plays just fine and I’m glad the game doesn’t hold your hand with continuation points mid level.
Also lol using the hammer with the mech imp fight....
@@midianrises1742 did you need to update the game with a day one patch, if so what size ?
Mine did it automatically. It was 4.4 GB
@@midianrises1742 just got my copy update is now 6gb version 1.01
Sir Daniel ForteSKEW, haha.
They could have maybe made all the fixes that some folks wanted but they couldn't have done that for $30. They wouldn't have put that much time into it unless they could get $60 out of it. At any rate, I love it how it is, personally.
Game of the year! Plain and simple! I choose this instead of a RDR2 or a GoW (ps4) everytime! Now we need a sequel, my only complaint is the vertical camera that keeps resetting.
FOUR- TESK - YOU
Love this game.
It’s a great game! Can’t wait for number two
Isn't that the whole point of remake they r the same games just with up date graphics
I platinumed the remake on PS4. Gotta say though that the PSP version is the ultimate way to play the game.
> A Game That is Stuck in the Past
And this is way this game is great and for obvious reason a remake with little "changes" or "inovations" like Spyro or Crash..., do yo spect to "change" in now days? waht a joke...
I kiss this simple fun stuff
all you need to know
if you are a fan of the original buy it!
it is amazing!
Blows my mind how much hate its getting. Is it bc Bluepoint's stellar SotC remake raised the bar so much that every Sony remake is compared to it or butthurt xturds jealous this gem aint on their system lol
Playing it on the Pro after the day 1 patch and they def improved the framerate except for the Scarecrow Fields plus even the camera has been improved. Hopefully Scarecrow Fields gets a performance fix with next patch. Solid 9/10 for me
I must disagree with your negative point. The fact they didn't update the gameplay with checkpoints gives the game an authentic feel of how games where back in the day. We gamers get spoiled more and more and our skills are not put to the test like they used to. Making you replay the whole level if you die, makes it more exciting. I just played through the whole game and was on the tip of my chair when i was running around with just a quarter of health left. I was glad when i finished the level and i had to be focused not to die and play the level all over again (and yes, that happened allot).
Crash N sane is another example of how difficult games used to be. It is kind of sad that if a game is to difficult people stop playing, move on to something more easy/forgiving instead of really getting skilled in that one game you wanted to finish like in the old days.
9/10
i ll buy it if it was on pc, i dont care about review
Love this game I remember when it came out 20 years ago part 1 & 2 I got them when they came out it never gets old and they do need to pronounce it correctly personally so you can't say don't review it it's an insult 😂
Complete lack of checkpoints?
Then what are those green bottles above your health bar? THAT ARE BEING USED, THE MOMENT YOU DIE, TO BRING YOU BACK TO LIFE?
I really hope they create a patch to make the combat like Batman or Witcher 3 where it is easier to fight being surrounded by enemies. Heck i would settle for Dark Souls combat where you lock on 1 enemy and the camera follows even if surrounded by more enemies.
Great aesthetics, camera is a little floaty, but an awesome game. It deserves an 8 maybe. A 6 is way too low.
I'm not into starting levels over and over and over, so unfortunately it's not a game I'm gonna buy. It looked promissing, but the lack save-points kills the joy.So this month it will be Death Stranding or Star Wars Jedi : Fallen order...maybe both.Depends on the reviews...And I don't base my judgement on just 1 review, but several reviews from different sources. My backlog of games still to play is to big to get frustrated with starting over entire levels in a game like this.
@Sir Galahad I'm 38 and in my young days all games were like that...I'm not affraid of games that are challenging. It's just that there are to many good games that I want to play and just to little time...This year I finished the Far Cry 5 and New Dawn game, The Man of Medan, RDR2, Days Gone and A plague Tale...I just started Control and this month there's still Death Stranding and (maybe...depending on the reviewscores) Star Wars Jedi : Fallen order to play....And 2020 is promising to be an overload of good things to come. The Last of Us 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and later on the year the new PS5 release.I'd rather play the big franchises than wasting time getting frustrated over a game that should be a quick and fun inbetween game.
@Sir Galahad If I find the time inbetween some of the bigger games I'll buy Medievil, it's been since Medievil : Resurrection on my old PSP that I've played a Medievil game.It will depend on the reviews on SW Fallen Order and Death Stranding. If 1 of those 2 games get reviews that aren't good, I will buy the Medievil game instead. Also depends on how fast I can get trough them games...
@Sir Galahad I know it's not an expensive game.Just had it in my hands a couple of days ago when I bought "Control".It's not because I'm contemplating to buy Star Wars that I'm an Electronic Arts enthousiast...The only EA game in my PS4 collection (60+ games) so far is Battlefield. And the more Star Wars Jedi : Fallen order gameplay video's I watch, the less likely it is becoming that I will buy that game.Money isn't an issue for me...I'll buy any game if I want go play it.To me it doesn't matter if it costs 29€ or 290€.All that matters is that I enjoy a game.
No dude no this was an awful review
I wonder if Sony upped the Final game to True 4K
One the best remakes ever i never played the original but i happy played this game know
Im stuck in the past too, so I will probably enjoy this, ha ha.
Love the game. If I didn't have to go to work I would sit home and beat it on one sitting.
This game is given treatment like Spyro reignited and Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy.

Game is a easy 9 for me I love the remake just hope they will remake the second game.
YoU SpeLLEd HiS nAMe WrOnG !
Sigh... He spelled it right.
The only reason characters call him For-tis-cew in english, is because most english speakers have trouble spelling french writing, and this is the way a frenchman would pronounce it in English with a french accent. It is made to sound like a joke.
It’s spelled Fortesque, you’d say “Fortesk” in french.
Hit the nail on the head
yeah, it's For-tess-cue btw (like Rescue) not For-tesk *smh*
This could easily be a ps4 original game i played this game 21 years ago on the ps1 and loved it, so i don't understand these crappy reviews. Its absolutely mind blowing how great the remastered looks and plays.
This and outcast are how remakes should be.. only change very little.. nothing wrong with the originals
You clearly didn't play the original, not to mention you can't even pronounce the main character's name right. Also the controls were good in the original good controls and from what I hear they actually made the controls in this game even better. Also the game doesn't need check points and you can always move out the way when dealing with charging enemies. All in all.. what must be said is... GET GUD SCRUB!!!
Welcome to the Sekiro and MediEvil #GitGud camp
This back then when you need skills to play games. Gamingbolt aren't real gamers.
As fan of original I love this game .
"Fortesk" had to close the video right then and there
Jesus Christ why is it that no reviews can actually say sir Dan's name right and the fact that it's not remade enough is a stupid thing to say the game is exactly what it's ment to be which is why it's only a £20 game it's easily a 8/10
That moment when these journalists's credibility goes out the window lol
The telling sign that a Medieval review is objectively bad is when they can't pronounce Fortesque correctly
Its amazing... Unbelievable atmosphere and nice level design with big variety. Love the no checkpoints style! So intense. Fuck yeah! Praise the devs for not including that shit. 9/10 from me :)
It's a remake, not a reinvention. It's meant to capture the atmosphere and feel, with updated visuals.
And wtf do you mean when you complain about the gameplay, saying you just do the same thing in different levels... That's literally every game that exists, it's called gameplay loop, albeit with slight variation in difficulty or appearance. I replayed this game a few years ago, and completed it just as easily as i did when i was a kid, cause the mechanics are so simple, there's no need for a million checkpoints. And do yourselves a favor and google how his name is pronounced, instead of just regurgitating a script.
