Fun fact: grinding for health was possible, health vials respawned but fountains didn’t. I beat this legitimately, but it took a LOT of replaying the museum. At least I got a lot of cash each time I went into the mouse hole….
I heard somewhere that MediEvil 2's devs wanted to feature a distant relative of Sir Daniel Fortesque from the late 1800's called Sir Henry Fortesque, I believe, as the protagonist. I kind of wonder what the game would have been like if they went forward with that idea.
yet here i stand, this is my fav ps1 game from my childhood, your points sting, but mostly because I think you are right! Still love the series, thanks for covering them.
I feel the way to keep the joke going about Dan but turn it on it's head is to change it so that no one remembers who he is now despite finally being a legitimate hero. He could constantly grumble about about how he deserves respect, but no one cares, eventually making Dan take up the mantle of hero once more purely out of spite. You could also make reference to the fact that after the events of the first game, Dan was officially in the Hall of Heroes and being revived again has ripped him out of paradise, making him even crankier over having to prove himself all over again. Maybe even have it that he can't go back to the Hall of Heroes, making his reward of spending eternity with Kiya mean more than just obligatory love interest. Or at the very least, be somewhat comical in that he can no longer enter paradise, but he's got a hot girl so good enough? I dunno, now I'm thinking too much on this!
I hope they remake Medieval 2 and include the original too. Don't have the original on PS1. Next remake/remaster Syphon Filter trilogy. I wanna see that OPed taser in HD.
Kiya is the kind of character that make all us feel like stupid. There is a Solid reason if She went to Whitchapel alone. And the reason of the relationship...well if you see the plot of the third game you'll know it!!!
It's such a shame that the third game never came to be and the remake of MediEvil wasn't enough to remake the sequel and MAYBE get another shot at the third title... oh well.
6:20 Plus they kind of retcon him back into being a coward in 2 which ruins the whole point/true ending of the 1st game. But yeah as one other comment here said they could've done a new character arc for Dan in this game besides sudden love interest. 6:53 Oh hey, the same reason I hate the story and Gordon Freeman himself in Half Life 2 10:10 Zarok achieves everything he wanted in the 1st game's opening FMV unlike Palethorn, he doesn't need to be "pro-active" and appear every 5 seconds to do stuff when you already see his influence on Gallowmere throughout the game. Zarok is more intimidating/memorable/funny as a villain than Palethorn despite having way less screen time. Stupid complaint 12:00 THIS was the true final nail for the series. Dan fusing with his past self which conveniently doesn't cause any time paradoxes (except maybe the 100% ending) and somehow gives him golden Space Marine armor... This is Highlander 2 levels of series ruination. Did they read this garbage out loud? 14:15 The idea of Palethorn (a lowly thug with delusions of grandeur suddenly becoming all-powerful) isn't bad if not cliche but no, Palethorn sucks. I don't care that he's "more pro-active", there's nothing to him besides his fake posh voice. He's not funny, he's not threatening, and he has to ride Zarok's coattails for his own evildoing. I think the vampire could've potentially made a better main villain 15:11 This game does nothing that Soul Reaver/Crash/Spyro didn't do before and Terracon from the same year blows this game's ingame cutscenes out of the water on the same system 16:19 Marc Silk is a good voice actor but he does a terrible job as Dan. He doesn't sound like his jaw's missing, he just sounds drunk 18:00 No, 1st game has a great soundtrack. Medievil 2 has a few highlights (Museum, Freakshow) but yeah it's mostly boring 24:08 I know YMMV but I liked that you had to return to previous levels in the 1st game, gave more of a feeling of progression 26:19 Screw whoever decided to add fall damage in the sequel 27:33 I never played far enough into this trash to experience the worst of this mechanic. And yeah the devs must have really loved Dan Hand since it's on the PAL box art 29:30 Nah, Titans is the worse of the 2 games. It's not tightly designed and it's way more limited and repetitive than Mind Over Mutant 31:44 This video is shithouse and could've been half the length if you got to the point and stopped cutting to live-action to be unfunny. And no, the health in the 1st game doesn't suck, you get tons of health and spots to refill 32:22 My God, stop saying "borrowing from the future", it's a stupid expression. Were you trying to reach an arbitrary word count? 33:49 This level was basically just an excuse to reuse those pumpkin enemies from the 1st game, wasn't it 34:10 Oh, of course you're a Redditor. Also let me tell you about "Wookie Hole"... 35:36 Note these examples are all the first few levels in the game... 36:43 Stupid cliche garbage final boss. I would've liked to have seen their original idea of fighting a Kaiju version of Queen Victoria I know this is an old review but even though you hit most of the reasons why this game sucks, man I wish I hadn't "borrowed from the future" to watch this...
Don't apologize for not liking this video, no video on this channel is worth watching. The entire concept I was working with sucked as a concept. That's why I abandoned this channel 4 years ago, and why the entire motto of the successor channel was "get to the point"
I sometimes think that MediEvil 2's visuals look like a 1997 PS1 game, like Crash Bandicoot 2 or Final Fantasy VII, despite the game releasing in 2000. The characters' faces never move and their models don't have much detail. Spyro: Year of the Dragon has better animated cutscenes.
MediEvil 2 is an interesting sequel. I agree with a lot of what was said. Especially with the downgraded health system. But at the same time, I kind of prefer it over the first on the basis that an instant weapon swapping button was added. I also didn't hate the stealth system, but did feel like a less interesting version of the core gameplay that made MediEvil, and I LOVED the VIctorian England setting so much. Fantastic review as always, dude!
Actually, the Jack The Ripper tangent makes even less sense because Jack The Ripper's killings took place in 1888!.... For Christ's sake, The Order 1886 wasn't the first to make this anachronism?
I played the series a little over a year ago and I wanted to love medievil 2 but it really pissed me off. The health system is awful and I couldn't beat the final boss so I had to cheat, hated the story and dans voice the level gimmicks etc. Even the camera when you go down the chandelier in the level always had the camera in such a bad position I couldn't see anything.. Lastly I tried grinding for gold so I could abuse the gold armor from the merchant but my gold would disappear at complete random sometimes I would boot up the game and it would be there sometimes it would magically be gone. Fuck this game
I do wonder if they didn’t remake Medievil 2 for the reasons TGX listed, a lack of funding, or a lack of time. Or maybe they are still planning a remake for it and are just holding it off.
It might just be the kind of thing you don't get unless you play it yourself, but I'm not really seeing the appeal of the actual gameplay of these games from the footage alone. The combat looks sloppy and imprecise, the controls look like they go all over the place with the tilt of the stick, and the platforming looks janky and awkward. Maybe a 3D beat em up with switchable weapons was more of a novelty in 1998-2000? Still, that genre has come a long, *long* way since then. Or maybe the characters and the atmosphere were what sold it, I dunno. Regardless, I'm not exactly in a rush to spend $80 apiece on physical copies of these games.
I did play a little of the MediEvil remake on PS4. The way I see is that the lore/ atmosphere and the characters is what mainly sold it. The people who made this seemed to care more about that over everything else. The gameplay and controls was like an extra to them and they didn’t know how to design it properly. The combat is loose and sloppy while movements is simply slippery. The jumping suck, especially in those parts where it want the player to be precise and careful, which makes the platforming, like you said, janky and awkward. And this is the remake I’m talking about. Which surprised me. It should have improved the issues with the original, like making the combat have weight and the jumping to be neat and not floaty. These would make the game actually fun. I mean, the original MediEvil seems to be an outdated game not meant to be played for today’s standards, while the remake is the same janky game that improves nothing except for the graphics and resolution. In my opinion, gameplay always come first, no matter what the genre is. I play games for good controls/ gameplay. I played other hack ‘n’ slash games with smooth and slick controls and prefer those over any of the MediEvil games. I would play a game with a lackluster lore and characters with great gameplay and controls over a game with great lore and characters but with sluggish and poorly-designed gameplay and controls. Don’t get me wrong, having good lore and characters is nice and all, but it should not be the main reason to play a video game. The original MediEvil is definitely not worth the $60 it’s going for. Neither is MediEvil II. The only reason these game are valuable is simply that the quantity is small.
Unless you're talking Can/Aus dollars these games aren't that expensive used and the gameplay/controls are good at least in the 1st game. It's aged a lot better than other action/platforming games from that period like Nightmare Creatures or cough, Mario 64
@@flynnssmirk3086 The 1st game's a classic that holds up (Ghost Ship not withstanding) and the remake is great, I'll play a faithful remake over "modernised" trash with shoehorned-in Souls-like combat any day, SCREW updating games "for modern audiences" especially in 2024 now it's just a fancy way of saying "dumbing down/censorship",. Again, something tells me you don't have this energy for other games from the period that actually have aged badly like Mario 64 or to a lesser extent, Ocarina
THIS SEQUEL IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE! When you jump, measuring the height and distance where you will land is all BAD! I gave up playing this game because of that!

Crash, Soul Reaver, and for a game from 2000 Medievil 2's cutscenes look like ass compared to Terracon
I loved the hand sections. Actually, they were my favorite part.
holy shit long time no video but this one was great
I honestly think this game is why MediEvil isn't considered some Playstation classic and icon like Spyro or Crash
I think the "bad ending" was put to the 100% to put a cliffhanger? Like crash 4 100% ending

This is a enjoyable game very nostalgic.
