ive always loved ocarinas, and just two days ago i was in Venice when i saw this in an ocarina show (though it was the number 3). i was ecstatic to find an original replica made in the original way from the original city, so close to the original city with original materials to take home with me
david the other i walked into a charity shop and found a 1930 austrian ocarina for only £5/$5 it had ten holes and had all the paint work no damage and original box and music sheet
I find that though Fabio Menaglio ocarinas do not have twelve finger holes, a quick tilt of the ocarina to do a "fipple bend" with the chin can be just as effective as using the sub-holes on Asian style ocarinas. Since Menaglio ocarinas have such a high requirement of breath even on the lowest note, reducing breath pressure for B is not an issue, and the note can still clearly be heard. I don't find a need for a low A very often when I play, but my preference is for breathy Italian ocarinas. :)
I wished an ocarina some years ago (I am in Switzerland and a beginner) And I got this one. Gave up for some years, now in lockdown I started again with your tutorial series...was about to give up again because of the high notes not playing when I saw your video about breathing and more breath required for high notes in some ocarinas...On my way to producing sound now maybe not even that bad to start on such a "difficult" instrument allthough if there where much more easely aviable ocarinas here I probably would change 🤔
I started out with crappy locally available Langley-style pendants, but the Menaglios were my first transverse ocs. I bought a boxed set of 3 back before they were distributed in the US and had to fax my credit card info to Italy to get them and then wait anxiously for about a month, but it was worth it! Lovely ocarinas.
Nice! I like the warm earthy tone it gives you. I wish you had time for more videos, but I understand because I am busy sometimes too. Keep playing, because I love the tones you get out of the ocarinas! Also, a request....could you do want you gone from portal? Thanks -A Crazy fan of docjazz4
Thank you for your response! I think I'm going to be getting this ocarina soon but I am still worried by the quality control issue. I will look into other European style makers. And again thank you very much!
I had the Budrio Do 3 for a while before giving it to my friend (it was his birthday gift, but as we share everything I couldn't keep my hands off it xD) and I absolutely loved it! It was the first ocarina i've ever played and i didn't find any difficulties. I'm buying a 12 hole alto c ocarina from OcarinaWind for 23 dollars, i hope the comparison doesn't disappoint me too much xD
They're available from a couple of different USA stores now, so it you're from the 'states just buy through one of those retailers and if you get a bad one just get in touch with their customer service for an exchange. The unique qualities of the Managlios make them worth the slight risk, in my opinion. If buying through a "local" retailer in your own country it means you aren't out of luck if you get a lemon. :)
@Reptyler14 I asked my polka savvy big brother, it's the verse to the "Beer Barrel Polka." Since David doesn't continue playing into the familiar "Roll out the barrel" chorus, the song isn't immediately recognizable. Really fun tune, nicely played, especially on this particular ocarina!
Hey David my names Justin. I have much respect for your passion. After watching u I have bought 3 ocarinas and am very happy with them. Although I'm not in familiar to music I don't read sheet music and I was wondering from you what would be a good book for beginning and semi advanced music I can play on my SG 12 hole ocarina and my AC 12 hole ? I ask you because you have earned my respect as a teacher:)
Dunno if you still want to know, but it's called "Rosamunda", it's an italian song tipical of ocarina septet's repertoire ua-cam.com/video/38kYygIvfzk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/4KKNFqPpW0I/v-deo.html
Hey David, sorry i keep on commenting on all of your videos, so if you read my other comments, you know i am making an ocarina out of wood with 10 holes, kind of like this one. I didn't put the holes in yet so i am wondering if i should make it a 12 hole one. Also, if you know the measurements of the hole, please tell me. Thanks!! Your videos are really helpful.
I want a Do1 but the quality control issue bothers me, since I can't test it in person. I would love a quality Menaglio, but I think I'll wait until I have enough money and get a Pacchioni
David I believe the word you where looking for is better described by ''deep'', or maybe even ''profound''. Is there a site where we can buy these? I kinda NEED one of these xD

You said that you wouldn't recommend this particular ocarina for a beginner. Unfortunately it was the only one that was locally available and I only saw your video after. I find that your right in the breath department. However, I used to sing and I do sports so I guess I'm mostly fine. What I'm struggling with the most, is to hit the notes starting once you lift the 5th finger from the holes. According to the instruction manual that comes with the instrument that's the note a. On the matter of holes the one of for my left pinky is shaped differently than yours. It's oval. Could that be a mistake?
I am looking to buy/ make an ocarina. I want a quiet one the practice recreationally. Looking for an alto or tenor to purchase or base a design off of. 10 hole is preferred. Also, your videos are awesome.
Era la mia prima ocarina :3 Haha The way you pronounce the italian names is funny XD I love this ocarina :3 And I'm glad I'm not the only one with the left pinky problem YAY
I bought an ocarina from the same marker and, like you said I am having problems with the high notes, being my first ocarina I thought It was a me problem, I tried everything and It was driving me crazy, I'll call the maker and unless they can give me a solution to it (which I doubt) I'll return it
What’s unique about this ocarina is it’s designed to be played with A LOT of air. You might just need to give it a strong burst of air. The best way to test this is with a tuner app or piano. The highest note should play a high C if you have a SOL or a high F if you have a DO.
@@DavidErickRamos I have tried a lot of air, very Little air and the acute bend tecnique still the sound Is not quite the One that Is demonstrated by the market online
I have fallen in love with the tone of this ocarina! I am very weary hearing about the lack of quality control though. I am wondering if you would suggest this or the dragontooth from songbird, or any other comparable to the Sol4. I am sure you are tired of questions so I may not get a response. But thank you for the videos anyway!
syaoran here! :D does this kind of ocarina have an undercut when making its finger holes? or is it just made with no bends or adjustments to the finger holes? this one seems like it's made as is without any adjustments to benefit sound
I am very pastionate about the orcarina, but due to finantial trouble and our constant moving around, i havn't been able to get a good sounding as well as somewhat durable and transportable orcarina of my own. What can I do about that? Personaly I prefer tenor tones.
@docjazz4 hey,so i have bin looking for an ocarina,in china, but i cant find it anywhere, and im pretty sure ocarinas r asian-made,and also if i happen to find some, what is the best kind of to play various zelda songs and others on?8hole or 10 hole?12hole?G or C?

I was out of breath just watching you play it lol. Did you decide ahead of time what you were gonna play on the ocarina, or did you just randomly decide on that song like right before you started playing?
are you on here still? where do I get music and notes for a newby.. bought one of these at a garage sale for $2 and have kept it after I found out its worth.. would love to learn how to play.
docjazz4 i liked and subscribed but i got one question is it possible to get a ocarina by songbirdocarina*com in australia ( like order it ) k thank you.
Not good for beginners ? Oh, this is my first ocarina (well, I took a Zelda version because it has 12 holes) . I knew I should have bought another one :( I really love the tone of this ocarina but it's really loud and I find it kinda hard to play with. Oh, and sorry, my english must be really bad, I'm french.
@docjazz4 I have kinda small finger's and mine fit's perfectly and i got mine from Grothmusic com and mine sound's good and the acute bend make's my top note's not good but without it the sound is in tune very good
Every time i try to learn a song by air it comes out in F major. Why do you think that is so? No really, I just play stuff by air and every time I i try to get it right it goes to F major xD
THE VIDEOS I WATCH ON YOU REGARDING OCARINAS ARE VERY DATED, SOME AS FAR BACK AS 8 TO 12 YEARS AGO. I ordered my ocarina today. You sir, inspired me to pick up the oc again, ten years after my first was thrown against the wall by my aunt
I come back to your reviews over and over just to here you play these songs :)

The cheapest way to get these is to go to the ocarina festival in Italy. Even the large bass ocarinas are usually only around $80
Man, that thing sounds gorgeous! Too bad volume is an issue for me right now :C
Thanks, David, for the review. I think you it is very accurate.
@Tikku4ever Wow. Congrats on getting back on the saddle! XD
i love this song so much
@docjazz4 Thanks! :D You inspired me man! I saw you at Anime Expo, but the lines were crazy long
@CalifornianMusician That's not bad, but it depends on the keys of some of your band's songs. I think if you got a Do 3 as well, you'd be good to go!
