Also, "I am a new person" makes sense if I am, for example, a new person in a place (a new colleague, or visiting the place the first time)
"Oh, mä oon uusi ihminen tässä koirapuistossa"
That's true!!
Собачий парк?
The way Kat moves her arms in illustration of some of these terms makes her look like a cartoon character. I love it!
Hahahah that's funny
As with all of your videos, I am 'blown away' by your fantastic teaching style. Your have a real talent for this ... such a pleasure
thank you so much!
You are a good teacher by holding up items in conjunction with the word. And showing the puhekieli words is very helpful. If someone ever says to me, "You don't sound like a talking Finnish dictionary like may foreigners do" I will give KatChats the credit.
Oh kiitos paljon, I'm really glad you found it helpful! :D
This method of opposites is a good one because it focuses on what words have in common, since they are opposite points on a range, rather than just the difficult or unique meanings. It's better to have and integrated understanding than a comprehensive one.
Wooh that's one is Deep
@@marin_1441 So easy to get right, and yet, so easy to get wrong. That's because when people make mistakes in how they approach learning languages, they often don't realize it until they end up with some kind of obsessive disorder psychologically.
So then if they still don't identify the faulty method they can also run into the error of assuming it's something intrinsic to reality that's causing problems as well rather than themselves.
@@shatterthemirror8563 that one is deep in neuroscience
You could say "the new kid in class" or "the new man on the job" or "I'm new here." The meaning is slightly different than "young," of course--it means one is new to the situation, not new in absolute terms. How would you say these things in Finnish?
English *new* vs. *young* and Finnish *uusi* vs. *nuori* go 1:1 in every case I can imagine, they are very similar. We would say for example:
*Luokassa on uusi oppilas* 'pupil'
*Olen uusi täällä*
As you said, here *uusi* doesn't refer to person's age, but to his/her situation, so it is the correct word, as *new* in English.
@@mikahamari6420 Thanks!
Kiitos paljon Kat
As always, great video!
Yay kiitos paljon! :D
In 3:53 Cheetah - Genardi first time heard pretty funny for me i guess Cheetah is found only in Asia and Africa that's cool Finnish language has wide variety of word meaning
Only word that i don't know was
Lyhyt -Slow
Koala on lyhyt
I'm pretty sure "gepardi" and "leopardi" are etymologically the same. Finnish borrowed it from Swedish (I would imagine), but there's a long train of borrowings before that: Finnish-Swedish-French-Latin-Greek-Persian.
Thanks for maintaining this channel, it's very helpful. Kiitos paljon!
I'm glad you think so, kiitos!
Great video. You have a great way of making understanding Finnish very simplistic. Kiitos!!! 👍
Glad to hear that! :D
Very helpful videos🤟🤟 continue like this!!
Kiitos paljon!

Yay kiitos!
As always my go to reference for finnish words is hockey players names, so I had to look up Joni Pitkänens height. It turns out he is quite pitkä!
I really like that you reference hockey players!
Kiitos videosta! Sidney on nopea koira!
Also, may I use "lyhyt" to describe, for example, a short walk? Like "On tosi kuuma. Meillä on tänään lyhyt kävely"
Yes 100% you can!
Katya, hi great video as usual. I was wondering...combining the tunteet and this, would I say "Minua vahna" for "i am feeling old?"
Oh you picked a fun one! In Finnish "vanha" isn't used as a feeling in the same was sad or happy are. So how I would say this phrase is: "mulla on vanha olo" = I have an old feeling
@@KatChatsFinnish well....it is kind of a joke....I would put my hand on my wifes shoulder and say "oh, I am feeling old"....ha, ha....I have been doing it for years and she still punches me each time....
I would say: "Mä tunnen itseni vanhaksi." "Vanha olo" doesn't make sense in my view.
@@PaulVinonaama Thanks, I am still new at this....how does this translate?
@@garypeterson2079 "(Mä) tunnen itseni vanhaksi" = "I am feeling old." Literally: "I feel myself old", but I guess you don't use that "myself" in English in this context.
Hi, Kat! I've heard in duolingo that one can also use pitkä for a long song. Is that correct?
oikein
Yes! Just like Q & G said
You should check out the Langfocus channel's video "Duolingo is the Devil!"
Is there any difference between nopea vs nopee?
It's kirjakieli (written Finnish) vs. puhekieli (spoken Finnish).
Loistava video👍
Loistava is new adjective
👍
Sielun lumoaminen😊❤
kiitos! :)
😃🤩😍🤗💝💞😘
Kiitos.
Please, make a video teaching...
Handsome man
Beautiful woman
Thin person
Fat person
Rich person
Poor person
Minä olen lyhyt 😢
Mun internetti tosi nopea
Sinun internetti hidas
Minä on pitkä
Kat: “Miksi toi kirahvi on niin lyhyt?”
The poor random giraffe minding its own business “🥲🥲🥲🥲”
Is Toi and tuo same thing? Or error
@@marin_1441, I believe 'tuo' is kirjakieli and 'toi' puhekieli, but I'm not sure.
@@justaname1837 it's right
Yes exactly
Kiitos paljon
