Actually, the bass player, Mike Starr, blamed himself for Layne’s overdose. His life took a nosedive until his eventual overdose in 2011.

Trash Talkers , Mike was with Layne the day before his overdose. Layne was very sick (from extensive drug use....side note, he was only 86lbs when he died). Mike and Layne argued because Layne wouldn’t allow Mike to call 911. Mike left and the rest is history.

The “lead singer” is Layne Staley, (RIP) and the guitarist Jerry Cantrell is *actually* the lead singer... that’s how the band was formed. We lost Layne and bassist Mike Starr to addiction, heroin and other opiates primarily. A lot of their material is about the struggle with addiction. You’ll love their stuff. No one has done “Junkhead” yet, and there’s no better drug addiction related songs by any band. Ever. You’ll love it, trust.

When you do another from Alice in Chains here are their best (in my opinion) to choose from:
    1) No Excuses
    2) Would
    3) Grind
    4) Down in a Hole
    5) Heaven Beside You
    6) I Stay Away
    7) Them Bones
    8) Nutshell
    9) I Cut You In (Jerry Cantrell)
    10) Dam That River
When you react to Pearl Jam again here's my pick for best:
    1) Jeremy (MTV Unplugged version)
    2) Black (MTV Unplugged version)
    3) Given to Fly
    4) Alive
    5) Even Flow
    6) Daughter
    7) Elderly Women Behind the Counter in a Small Town
    8) Last Kiss
I'll stop there for now. Thank you.

Best way to describe AIC is that they are the most metal of the grunge movement. Very dark sound and very deep lyrics, but also very technical and heavy. When looking at metal and grunge a good comparison to rap is mainstream hip hop vs soundcloud rap (or mumble rap as haters call it, old school metalheads called this style grunge for the same reason). However out of all the grunge bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc), AIC is probably the most universally accepted band by metal fans.

Arguably the best grunge band from the 90s followed closely by Soundgarden. Throw a dart at a board with Chains songs, and you're going to get a good song. Anything from their Unplugged session was stellar. Layne Staley was one of the greatest singers too. And Jerry Cantrell (2nd vocals, lead guitar) is no slouch singing either. He helped infuse some blues vibes in their overall sound. And I've always said Layne and Jerry were the Simon and Garfunkel of grunge. Their harmonies together can give you goosebumps.

Layne actually wrote quit a few guitar riffs that they used. But he didn't play it on stage and stuff... But he was very versed in music.

Layne Staley was even a big Tool fan, appearing on stage with them a few times. So another bridge of the gap there too.

Layne didn’t just OD. He slowly and very deliberately completely destroyed himself. He dragged it out for years. When he finally died he went undiscovered for weeks, because no-one cared anymore.

I won't be mad at you for guessing Alice Cooper. It shows that you really are experiencing this music for the first time. Many of us watching are looking for the true first impressions.

Layne Staley and Mike Star both overdosed. (singer and Bass player). Not at the same time, nor together. Heroin is a solitude type of drug. The guitarist Jerry Cantrell is also co-writer and singer. Alice also toured with Tool.

All good buddy. I never get PO'd about someone not knowing this stuff. There's plenty I don't know too.
I know we've lost so many of these guys but let's just be grateful that Dave Grohl is still with us.
Soundgarden's Jesus Christ Pose is amazing. My favourite song from Soundgarden is a song called Just Like Suicide . It may seem insensitive but it is amazing and it showcases Chris Cornell and the band
