When Uli at InterOrdnance told me that he had crates of French rifles arriving from Ethiopia, I had no choice but to show up to take a look firsthand. So, want to see what this Ethiopian surplus looks like fresh out of the crate? Let's have a look...

Clearly Uli subscribes to the 'if it's so packed nothing can move, nothing can get damaged!' school of shipping.
After the life those guns have already had, i'm fairly sure they'd survive a few bumps in transit.
The longer you take to move on the more persons hear of of you as a person perfect for a bribe to get your stuff out of the country.
I wanted to get some more stuff from RTI but the extreme time they took to ship a couple of guns my dad ordered, nearly two months. And the fact that the carcano he got had a cracked stock. Even though he'd paid extra for hand select. Makes me really hesitant to do so.
And this method of packing kind of explains that.
It's a variation of my Crash Packed Theory. If you throw everything in your vehicle in a mess, when you have a crash it should sort itself out nicely. Place rifles in crate with minimal effort and care and turbulence plus rough handling of the crate will ensure that the rifles sort themselves out and make it easier to remove them from the crate. Over think the packing and you end up taking longer to unpack for no real gain in protection.
When the scene switched to Ian, standing on the floor flooded with rifles, I thought:
Gun Jesus walking on water! He is definitely in his element... Gun Heaven.
And Ouli asked of Gun Jesus: "If there are 50 French Rifles will you bless my shop?" "Yes, if there are 50 French Rifles I will" then Ouli asked "What about one?"

The funniest part of it is that they did sell firearms by the weight. Which I find hilarous.

It made me a bit uncomfortable when Ian *didn't* check the chamber before waving it around.

Funny to think, after seeing how they were packed, some of these will end up being in a guys safe, where they will be carefully placed where they won't touch anything else, for fear of them being damaged.
Mine are like that, though not for fear of them being damaged as I shoot my rifles regularly. More because I am a Brit, and one of the stipulations behind getting an FAC is correct storage of your weapons in a properly fitted gun safe. Hell, one my my SMLE's was my Great Grandfathers, he carried it from 1916 - 1918. If he carried it through the Somme, Pascheandale and the battles of 1918 then I am pretty sure it can handle a bit of a beating.....

These guns are really old, like some are currently in museums due to dating back to being used in the Battle of Adwa. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these in the Ethiopian countryside.

I love the way Ian casually mentions that there are M1 Garands available at 4:29. That mention and this video paid for Ian's new French navy rifle no doubt. Not that I begrudge Ian a little quid pro quo because I enjoyed this video almost as much as watching him emptying a Calico out on the range.

I'm so glad I bought a lot of 1938 German 8x56r 10 years ago, and the rifle itself. The finish on mine is considerably better, but my gun is already molested I suppose since I machine polished the bolt and it's parts, along with a mild rework of the internals. Smooth as butter, a hard smacking type of butter.

On the 1916, the black paint denotes in the military that it was changed from the original 7mm Mauser to the NATO round. To avoid issues. The Lang rear sight was the original first model rear sight. That is unusual bc most of them were fitted with the updated rear sight. The .308 model is more desirable for shooting bc of availability of ammo. All in all, very lucky pick.
