I'm European and honestly it's so much fun to watch Americans find out what Eurovision is. John Oliver is obviously exaggerating in this for the sake of laughter. Same goes for that Crimean man he showed.

What I love about Eurovision is that post-WWII Europe went: "Mmmh, what can we do to unite this continent and never let something like that happen again ever!" and thought "SONG CONTEST" was the best answer XD

LoneHylian That was the 1990 competition. Look at the lyrics of some of the songs, they wanted peace through songs in a yearly competition with ABBA (1974) and Celine Dion (1988).

+Amane Misa With basketball, football, and hockey, soccer is basically quaint. There's no physical contact and basically nothing happens for 90 minutes. I don't know how people find Americans finding soccer boring surprising. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. To Americans, Soccer is a watered-down less interesting version of hockey/basketball. And they're basically right. I don't blame anyone in America for not caring about soccer. By comparison to what we have here it just isn't interesting.

minutes. I don't know how people find Americans finding soccer boring
      surprising.
I dont find it surprising, the avergae American has such a short attention spawn that you need to break the games down in little pieces so you can throw in commercials and hot dogs in the breaks and have someone score at least every 5 minutes. I mean it seriously, if an American would watch an entire Football game over 90 minutes do you belive he could possibly figure out which team played better without checking the score?
      >I don't blame anyone in America for not caring about soccer. By comparison to what we have here it just isn't interesting.
For international standarts American football is just the worst shit, you literally sit in front of your tv for 3 hours to watch 15 minutes of play and 2 hours commercials, wtf.

Something people need to understand...Eurovision is not American Idol or Got Talent. It's not meant to be a serious competition between countries, because the performers already have fame in their home countries. It's a festival. The popular-voted contestants from each country give the best and often most outlandish performances they can because no matter the political differences and unease between certain countries, they all share a love of music and theatrics. Each country gets their own public vote so no country gets an unfair advantage.
Dont get me wrong, even though it's 'non-political' there are still subtle (and not so subtle) acts that make commentary about historical events and people of power, like Oliver pointed out the suggestive lyrics. One winning act was Ukraine, Jamala '1944' , and it was very controversial because of what the song was about. Look it up if you want to know more.
But on the whole there is a lot of respect and friendships made at the contest. As my country down under was recently invited to join the contest - because we love waking at 5am, dressing up and partaking in drinking games while we laugh at the costumes - I believe I'm allowed to give that opinion and hope the European fans will agree.

    • @metrofilmer8894

+Russian Homie - That 99% participation rate is verifiably false, and those who said yes did so knowing that there was a Russian soldier with a loaded assault rifle standing outside _every single_ polling station. I'm not for a moment going to suggest that nobody in Crimea was in favour of joining Russia, but don't you think the soldiers might have skewed the result slightly? That's all without mentioning that Russia didn't have the authority to organise a referendum in foreign territory in the first place...

    • @nikakosirati6103
      @nikakosirati6103 6 років тому +10

Robert Faber alright man I'm from Crimea and my family voted haha there were no riffles anywhere or military scathing people as the US portrayed it this goes way deeper than your ignorant brain can wrap around. Ukraine always hated Crimea and never respected us for speaking Russian from birth. There are 2 navy bases in Crimea a Russian and Ukrainian one even before the revolution. At the time of the referendum Ukraine was going through a horrible revolution where very nationalistic Ukrainians went to the capital and protested to get rid of the president those same nationalist got very mad not only at the government but tried to pick on what everyone else has done wrong. The protestors came to Sevastopol and whoever did not speak Ukrainian to them or say they love Ukraine they would beat up and so they did that to my friend who only spoke Russian. There were military acts and a revolution but the war was happening in the east of Ukraine near the mine lands where most people don't have a higher education and do manual labor for the rest of their life or join a gang and become somewhat illegally rich. And that is where there were shootings between nationalistic Ukrainians and the gangs. There were none of that in Crimea. Crimea did not want to be a part of the mess and since no one ever even liked them they left and only then did Ukrainian started crying how they miss us.

Crimea's annexation is symbolic as it is strategic.. 10 billion dollars is nothing if you consider the fact that the only base for Russia's Mediterranean fleet is there.. Also the idea that Crimea is dependent of Ukraine is wrong (it can't be used diplomatically wise), because financially Ukraine is dependent of Russia (debt wise).. How many billions of dollars did U.S spent for South East operations?? How many lives spent?? Well.. no war zone in Crimea region... I'm from a country that had a Communist regime and yes, to that was a man reduced too at an old age. He looks like my grandfather. Well la-di-da to the West that their elderly go jogging, bike riding, take on an ordinary massage and enjoy life. Not everybody has had it this bright. These people had to work all their life for their children to have something on their tables in an abusive regime where free thought was taken and in which you lived in fear with a hoe in a hand and a shovel and a pick ax in the other. Most of the men and women like the one in the picture don't even remember how to write and read very well. Especially women. It's funny how you people babble on everywhere about political correctness and stopping racism, but when it comes to Eastern Europe you just put your hand in the sand! Sorry for my English.

I think it had more to do with the Oligarch corrupt system that had made these countries poor particularly, Russia. With the amount of money generated by Russian oil and gas revenue, the Russian people should have been able to live the type of life style of the Nordic countries. The winter Olympic was a good example of the Russian corrupt system. Kicking people off their lands with little pay to make way for hotels and resorts that was only going to use once. At the price tag of 50 billion dollars, many of the necessary infrastructure was still being built while the event was about to start. Unless the people do something about the amount of corruption in Russian politic, the one most hurt by all of this is the people.

"Putin shouldn't be happy about conquering Crimea because it mostly depends on the rest of Ucraine".
Believing he would have stopped with Crimea is some truly Neville-Chamberlain-level of naive...

To call Crimea 'worthless' is... well, not _entirely_ accurate. Sure, _economically_ the place is pretty desolate - but it's also *fucking beautiful*. In the Russian psyche, Crimea takes about the same spot as Mallorca does with my people (Ze Germans) - only that the Russians used to _own the place_.
Do not underestimate the influence Silly Sentiment has on international politics. I think Bismark once said something to that effect :D

That plus the peninsula wasn't being sponsored by Ukraine at all. Most of the income of Ukraine is from eastern regions but they don't really invest back in them, just drain the money. That's why they are so eager to get eastern provinces back through murder of their own citizens and bombing peaceful villages. After all, when there are no more pro Russian people left in there, they can do to the land whatever they want: sell it to USA oil companies or make a NATO military camp.
Coming back to the topic: Crimea used to be the one of the best resorts in USSR but after the collapse of the country, there was no more money going in and of course tourists won't go to a half-broken place. So it became less popular. Now, hopefully, it will be restored to its former beauty and will flourish again.

Pavel Drozdov Well, it clearly isn't a one-way process, considering the considerable amount of gas, energy, industrial products, food and drinking water that was provided by the western territories. Additionally, 70% of the Crimean tourism were from western territories, and almost all of its banking services (which Russia has now effectively cut off). In the meantime, the only thing that Crimea sells to other territories is tourism, a noticeable but still rather small chunk of the pie, and raw agricultural produce, which isn't that valuable either.
So yeah, I don't buy the argument that they were "sucked dry", as you state.
If anything, Crimean local politicians are to blame for the state of the region in the first place. They clearly made the region waaaaay too dependent on outside resources, while not investing nearly enough in its own production.

did you actually find these numbers or just made them up? My best guess would be that 50-50 were from east and west. And by west I would mean Ukraine for the most part. But inner tourism is like selling goods to yourself - it's nice but there's no actual inflow for the country.
Tourism can't flourish if you don't invest and that was the situation in Ukraine (take a look of photos of Crimea 30-40 years ago and now). They barely had enough money to feed western provinces and they cared less about eastern ones that were actually making money.
You're saying that Crimea isn't self-sufficient as if every other state or region is. Ukraine isn't self-sufficient and relies on Russia more than you know. That's why they basically just fucked themselves with a huge dildo by breaking relationship with Moscow that was hardly friendly because of how Kiev always stabbed them in the back.
Ukraine, as all other ex-USSR republics, started off without any debts. Russia took all of them even though it wasn't completely Russia's. So what do they do with this chance? They blow it up: sold all of USSR military glory for scrap metal prices, borrowed money from Russia and still couldn't economically prosper. And that is despite the fact that Ukraine holds very fertile lands, has quite a lot of natural resources and has a good potential for mass production. Ukraine has amazing potential but it doesn't have smart leaders or they don't want Ukraine to be rich.
In the last 20 years Ukraine had 2 coup d'etat: every time pro-Russian leader was elected. These coups were committed by 1% of the population, each time - no referendums, nobody asked other people if they wanted that. Each time opposition was feeding plain lies, and each time economical and social situation in Ukraine didn't get better, it only got worse.
Most people are tired of having such political and economical instability so they lean more towards Russia and what is Ukraine's reaction? Instead of showing that they care about east as well, they kill those people, most of which are civilian.
Russia isn't great but it's at least stable.

Crimea is a russian strategic place because of the russian naval base in Sevastopol that allows the black sea float to deploy to the southern mediterranean sea and beyond.
