The popular-voted contestants from each country give the best and often most outlandish performances they can because no matter the political differences and unease between certain countries, they all share a love of music and theatrics. Each country gets their own public vote so no country gets an unfair advantage. Dont get me wrong, even though it's 'non-political' there are still subtle (and not so subtle) acts that make commentary about historical events and people of power, like Oliver pointed out the suggestive lyrics. That's all without mentioning that Russia didn't have the authority to organise a referendum in foreign territory in the first place...
Robert Faber alright man I'm from Crimea and my family voted haha there were no riffles anywhere or military scathing people as the US portrayed it this goes way deeper than your ignorant brain can wrap around. Ukraine always hated Crimea and never respected us for speaking Russian from birth. There are 2 navy bases in Crimea a Russian and Ukrainian one even before the revolution. At the time of the referendum Ukraine was going through a horrible revolution where very nationalistic Ukrainians went to the capital and protested to get rid of the president those same nationalist got very mad not only at the government but tried to pick on what everyone else has done wrong. The protestors came to Sevastopol and whoever did not speak Ukrainian to them or say they love Ukraine they would beat up and so they did that to my friend who only spoke Russian. There were military acts and a revolution but the war was happening in the east of Ukraine near the mine lands where most people don't have a higher education and do manual labor for the rest of their life or join a gang and become somewhat illegally rich. And that is where there were shootings between nationalistic Ukrainians and the gangs. There were none of that in Crimea. Crimea did not want to be a part of the mess and since no one ever even liked them they left and only then did Ukrainian started crying how they miss us.

They wanted Crimea not for its economic prosperity..... They wanted it because of its geographical locations and its ports which you failed to highlight completely. Usually love you Oliver but I think your team of writers missed a key point
Occifer Jehons If by EVERY single point you mean the most important reason, then yes. And since Crimea's strategic location (more importantly the naval base) is the main reason Russia annexed it, I'd say that's a point WORTH pointing out, don't you think?
@33kaus holokaust i had a military officer explain it to me back then, Crimea was a territory the Russians "donated" to Ukraine during the Soviet Union, its where most of their naval operations are based from. Them invading Crimea was essentialy just a way to reclaim land that they originally owned. Doesnt excuse the civilian casualties but it made sense on multiple levels.
@@jimn4315 Thats an weak excuse. Poland also "donated" east Poland to the USSR back then, but hell would break loose if they would reclame it. The russian empire conquered it from the Ottomans. Ukraine itself was created as an buffer state in the peace treaty between Russia and the central powers.
@@FrogsterLP and then that buffer state wanted to join the EU and hand over russian military bases to the EU in the form of crimea. Its not an excuse for killing civilians but its understandable that an autocratic nation wouldnt allow itself such a disadvantage.
@@FrogsterLP Poland did not donate anything even if you write it in brackets. They lost a war and got stripped of the land. Whereas the USSR actually gave Crimea for administrative purposes to Ukraine without any kind of war as a pretext. Your analogy is wrong.
@@haldir3120 Vania, what “administrative purposes” excuse have you Russkis come up with, now? Doesn’t matter how you twist it, you committed a military aggression against your neighbour to whom you had previously made guarantees of territorial integrity in the Budapest Agreement. There’s no justification for this act of military aggression and the resulting land grab. The Turks could possibly come up with way more credible historical claims than your BS stories selectively going back only to what suits your fables. Is Sudetenland a good analogy? I think it is and sure like hell I am hoping Putin, Lavrov, and Shoigu end up exactly as their German role models. And Russia will get territorially trimmed on the same scale as the Vaterland did in 1945.
I dont understand why they should be butthurt though.. Crimea's annexation is symbolic as it is strategic.. 10 billion dollars is nothing if you consider the fact that the only base for Russia's Mediterranean fleet is there.. Also the idea that Crimea is dependent of Ukraine is wrong (it can't be used diplomatically wise), because financially Ukraine is dependent of Russia (debt wise).. How many billions of dollars did U.S spent for South East operations?? How many lives spent?? Well.. no war zone in Crimea region... Still a shit move by Russia, but U.S is not really in a position to critisize xD
M4d Alex my comrade your explanation is 100% accurate... The problem here is not the show (because they advertise themselves as comedians) the problem is the stupid people who take this show as real news source. But then again this is the way corporate media serve it's masters by "brain washing" and "misinforming" the entire US population.
While I do understand that this show is a pamphlet and I actually agree with 99% of what Oliver says, that one percent remains. You shouldn't make fun of that old man. I'm from a country that had a Communist regime and yes, to that was a man reduced too at an old age. He looks like my grandfather. Well la-di-da to the West that their elderly go jogging, bike riding, take on an ordinary massage and enjoy life. Not everybody has had it this bright. These people had to work all their life for their children to have something on their tables in an abusive regime where free thought was taken and in which you lived in fear with a hoe in a hand and a shovel and a pick ax in the other. Most of the men and women like the one in the picture don't even remember how to write and read very well. Especially women. It's funny how you people babble on everywhere about political correctness and stopping racism, but when it comes to Eastern Europe you just put your hand in the sand! Sorry for my English.
I think it had more to do with the Oligarch corrupt system that had made these countries poor particularly, Russia. With the amount of money generated by Russian oil and gas revenue, the Russian people should have been able to live the type of life style of the Nordic countries. The winter Olympic was a good example of the Russian corrupt system. Kicking people off their lands with little pay to make way for hotels and resorts that was only going to use once. At the price tag of 50 billion dollars, many of the necessary infrastructure was still being built while the event was about to start. Unless the people do something about the amount of corruption in Russian politic, the one most hurt by all of this is the people.

"Putin shouldn't be happy about conquering Crimea because it mostly depends on the rest of Ucraine". Believing he would have stopped with Crimea is some truly Neville-Chamberlain-level of naive...
To call Crimea 'worthless' is... well, not _entirely_ accurate. Sure, _economically_ the place is pretty desolate - but it's also *fucking beautiful*. In the Russian psyche, Crimea takes about the same spot as Mallorca does with my people (Ze Germans) - only that the Russians used to _own the place_. Do not underestimate the influence Silly Sentiment has on international politics. I think Bismark once said something to that effect :D
That plus the peninsula wasn't being sponsored by Ukraine at all. Most of the income of Ukraine is from eastern regions but they don't really invest back in them, just drain the money. That's why they are so eager to get eastern provinces back through murder of their own citizens and bombing peaceful villages. After all, when there are no more pro Russian people left in there, they can do to the land whatever they want: sell it to USA oil companies or make a NATO military camp. Coming back to the topic: Crimea used to be the one of the best resorts in USSR but after the collapse of the country, there was no more money going in and of course tourists won't go to a half-broken place. So it became less popular. Now, hopefully, it will be restored to its former beauty and will flourish again.
Pavel Drozdov Well, it clearly isn't a one-way process, considering the considerable amount of gas, energy, industrial products, food and drinking water that was provided by the western territories. Additionally, 70% of the Crimean tourism were from western territories, and almost all of its banking services (which Russia has now effectively cut off). In the meantime, the only thing that Crimea sells to other territories is tourism, a noticeable but still rather small chunk of the pie, and raw agricultural produce, which isn't that valuable either. So yeah, I don't buy the argument that they were "sucked dry", as you state. If anything, Crimean local politicians are to blame for the state of the region in the first place. They clearly made the region waaaaay too dependent on outside resources, while not investing nearly enough in its own production.
xxhellspawnedxx did you actually find these numbers or just made them up? My best guess would be that 50-50 were from east and west. And by west I would mean Ukraine for the most part. But inner tourism is like selling goods to yourself - it's nice but there's no actual inflow for the country. Tourism can't flourish if you don't invest and that was the situation in Ukraine (take a look of photos of Crimea 30-40 years ago and now). They barely had enough money to feed western provinces and they cared less about eastern ones that were actually making money. You're saying that Crimea isn't self-sufficient as if every other state or region is. Ukraine isn't self-sufficient and relies on Russia more than you know. That's why they basically just fucked themselves with a huge dildo by breaking relationship with Moscow that was hardly friendly because of how Kiev always stabbed them in the back. Ukraine, as all other ex-USSR republics, started off without any debts. Russia took all of them even though it wasn't completely Russia's. So what do they do with this chance? They blow it up: sold all of USSR military glory for scrap metal prices, borrowed money from Russia and still couldn't economically prosper. And that is despite the fact that Ukraine holds very fertile lands, has quite a lot of natural resources and has a good potential for mass production. Ukraine has amazing potential but it doesn't have smart leaders or they don't want Ukraine to be rich. In the last 20 years Ukraine had 2 coup d'etat: every time pro-Russian leader was elected. These coups were committed by 1% of the population, each time - no referendums, nobody asked other people if they wanted that. Each time opposition was feeding plain lies, and each time economical and social situation in Ukraine didn't get better, it only got worse. Most people are tired of having such political and economical instability so they lean more towards Russia and what is Ukraine's reaction? Instead of showing that they care about east as well, they kill those people, most of which are civilian. Russia isn't great but it's at least stable.
Crimea is a russian strategic place because of the russian naval base in Sevastopol that allows the black sea float to deploy to the southern mediterranean sea and beyond.
Knowing how much jokes from Last Week Tonight get turned into actual things, I now really want some EDM artist with too much time on his hands to make that 'Churn it up' song.

I'm not for a moment going to suggest that nobody in Crimea was in favour of joining Russia, but don't you think the soldiers might have skewed the result slightly?
Also John Oliver said Crimea is in the east of Ukraine but it's literally the southern region hahah
You could hear the audience deciding whether or not to clap for Conchita: "haha wtf a drag queen, wait, aren't we more open-minded now? we're not making fun of them on this show apparently, okay, woohoo! Clap clap clap!"
It's a perfect example of how we're becoming more open-minded on trans-related topics. Well, some of us are.

Crimea has a port that doesn't have to close in the winter. That's why Putin wants it.
Really, for a port
@@adhishreetrivedy6718 absolutely
@@adhishreetrivedy6718 , it's not just "a port" - it's their main military naval base, their only direct access to the Mediterranean, and the only naval base that doesn't freeze over during the winter. I wonder what the US would have done, if another country had tried to take away something of equal strategic importance to them - I guess they would have invaded that country so fast, it wouldn't know what hit them.

How strangely relevant this video has become for this year’s Eurovision

The bit from 5:10 was way over the line, John. I'm sorry, I really enjoy your show and you are usually very much on point, but this was just wrong.
I come from a former Eastern Bloc country (Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia). Men and women with that kind of look in their eyes are the ones I honour. They struggled most of their lives, some of them were put into prison. You'd learn a lot about morality and humility from them.
Yeah so what, its still a funny stereotipe, i like making fun of vietnam veterans

How do so many people in this comment section actually think that John Oliver is American?! Not only is there the obvious British accent, but there's also the fact that he constantly says that he's British in his show! Stop trying to use this guy as a way to rag on America just because some of us made fun of your giant singing contest
Note: I think that the Eurovision thing is cool and interesting but some people here seem to take it way too seriously
He doesn't say that he's british. He says the opposite, in fact. Pay the fuck attention.
+Daiyuki117 ok, then what does he say? That he was born and raised in America? I somehow doubt that after watching his show each week
He's English by birth, but he's married to an American and has since become a naturalized citizen. So...everyone's right?
The Cataking he uses we to talk about america, i think its safe to say he considers himself american

They wanted Crimea not for its economic prosperity.....
They wanted it because of its geographical locations and its ports which you failed to highlight completely.
Usually love you Oliver but I think your team of writers missed a key point
They didn't miss the point, they were just pandering to an ignorant and prejudiced audience.
You're right... Lets make a show drag up EVERY single fucking point! Because that's fun as fuck to listen to.
Occifer Jehons
If by EVERY single point you mean the most important reason, then yes. And since Crimea's strategic location (more importantly the naval base) is the main reason Russia annexed it, I'd say that's a point WORTH pointing out, don't you think?

You're right, why bother with analysis when you can make shit up?

Crimea is an strategic landmass for access to Europe through the Black Sea
So many butt-hurt Russian and Russo-philes in the comments makes the video more hilarious.
Half of them are probably paid propaganda - Russia is kind of famous for astroturfing around English-speaking parts of the Internet.
***** as are Israelis.
***** Is projection an american virtue? I totally think it is at this point.
This is the best description of the Eurovision Song Contest to the uninitiated I've ever seen.
Haha I recall when she won and I asked my friend about his opinion and he was like "Eh, if I wanna see a bearded lady I'd use public transportation."
Hits different in 2022...
Watching this in 2020 is *wild*
_which country are you from friend. I have friends who lived in Serbia, Czech Republic, and Belarus. The old man probably did agricultural labor and was out in the sun alot he has the face of a muzhik. He should be honored for the ljfe he has lived and cared for. He has earned it.

+Anni-Riin Agukas Are you talking about the gulags during the Soviet area? Then: Ukraine was part of it itself. It's not like Russia did it, the UDSSR did.
+StYxXx Russia was a boss and the centre of USSR. Capital was Moscow. Ukraine didn't have any power.
+Aiste Osinskyte then you should check again, from which countries the Leaders from ussr were!
They clearly made the region waaaaay too dependent on outside resources, while not investing nearly enough in its own production.
xxhellspawnedxx
did you actually find these numbers or just made them up?
Hey, what's the deal with Germans and Mallorca?
