A point about the roof: Even if they'd given the roof wooden shingles it would manage to make more sense historically and practically, because wood had ways to be treated so it would be reliably fire resistant. However, "because medieval", they gave it the one roof style of the genre that really can't be fireproofed. Beautiful set regardless, but a real disappointing detail to be sure...
@@nickporter9967 I can agree it does look neat, but it's not great in matters of realism. I get that it's a kids toy, but as someone who enjoys medieval history it'd have been cool if there was a bit more historical sense and detail, but alas, easily burnable thatch.

I took one class in college on archeology in the middle east, super interesting, way out of my league. BUT I did learn about what I think the prof called a "Bent Access" approach to a fortification. Basically, the path leading up to the main gate is at an angle like it is on this model, but to a greater degree, and has a curtain wall on either side. This exposes any attackers looking to breach the main gate to several hundred extra yards of wall from which to be shot as they trudge up the path to the gatehouse. This path was usually parallel to the main wall kind of like it is on this castle, but could also have a hairpin turn to create a longer stretch of wall that attackers would be exposed too. TL:DR: the access ramp is an homage to this kind of defensive structure, but they also had to make it look good, so it's not as effective as we'd like for defensive reasons.
Yes, for sure the bent entrance gets a plus in defensibility, since it, as you say, exposes a force to more wall. The problem is that that wall can't be manned, so it is just a couple turrets that can fire upon attackers. It is historical, though it could use a more sure structure below it. It makes accessibility pretty tough to judge. Keep the Good Times Poppin'!

Been waiting to get this set before watching this video. I loved the build but as a fan of shadiversity and this channel, I thought of all these ADO issues as I built it
Great. GREAT Drawbridge design. You cut one chain, the drawbridge still works. You cut both chains, and the drawbridge will raise automatically, making the castle inaccessible through the front gate.
@@hurlaky43 If only there were a few houses that had sufficiently emptied to be so, but as it was ladies were always supplied a retinue, and there are at least two supposed to be ladies here, and an insufficient retinue. Further, the servants have not been pressed, which would certainly be the next result of insufficient manpower for a castle, and women may have had to work the cart, mill, etc.
@@witoldwitoszekrecords3253 TBH its so easy to change, its just easy head swap since the soldier bodies are the same and not gender specific that it becomes a non issue for me. Especially with how easy it is to source pieces nowadays to fit the build to anyones needs.
Many have much more advance entrance and parts to make this castle much more camplete on rebrickable. Great review on these castles but the volume is kinda of low but then some odd background hmmm noise in the way.
to be fair...it's slightly scaled down from a real castle. It's more like a keep or inner defenses, than a full on castle. It needs an outer wall with a larger courtyard which could have room for a stable and servant/guard quarters and a larger storehouse for supplies in case of a siege.
It's true, it could use a curtain wall and more buildings. However, some good ol' real castles are this small or smaller, such as the typically non-noble towerhouses or the following: Chateau de Allyemes; Carondelet; Bedzin Castle; Castillo de Magana; Burg Gutenfels; Rocca Maggiore; Bodiam Castle; Murieston Castle; and hundreds of others. Most castles were this size; many were also wooden and did not survive to be examples. Keep the Good Times Poppin'!
That's a hope! We'd have to draw out draft and beam to theorize how they'd handle and make all sorts of adjustments, but could be! Keep the Good Times Poppin'!
I figured they’d of given the army 50/50 make to female ratio. Making the Lion Knights a faction of warrior women is some weird lore to add this late in the game.
i think it's dumb, so I'm going to change all the heads on my knights and make female civilians instead. I'm all for representation or whatever, but female knights just makes no sense historically.
You guys truly don’t know how actual castles were built… a garderobe was commonly used during sieges in the castle’s defense. It also wasn’t uncommon to arrow loops in the garderobe. Next, walls with no walkway yet have crenellations and merlons? That is extremely common in historical castles, most would have them on low-lying walls. Also there are a few very famous castles with water and caverns underneath them which were used to allow ally ships to come up to a dock and offload food and other supplies. Also, more often than not kitchens and other living and servicing quarters in a castle where commonly detached and separated from the great hall in order to reduce the probability of a fire destroying the main keep and to reduce the amount of lost space caused if they were included in the main keep. However most castles with an external kitchen would have underground tunnels that connected the kitchen with the dinning hall.
Thanks for your interest! You've obviously done lots of research! You must know that we are LEGO castle enthusiasts, and so we make comparisons with LEGO more than with historical castles. Perhaps this is clearer than our video: 1. Our problem w/ privy: the window, not the loops. An anachronism joke of toilet paper is there as well. Also common, of course, could have been cess-pits, which our MOCs have had. The inaccessible loops are worse in the barbican since some of them are several 'feet' too high. 2. Problem w/ crenelated walls: not that they are a-historical, just that LEGO never used them so it is a comparative disadvantage. 3. Very famous castles with watery cavers are famous because they are special. These caverns are weak, undermine-able, and cannot be used to dock ships nearby (known from the proximity of the water-wheel and indicated shallowness of water). 4. The kitchen problem: You say the kitchen may be separate from the keep for fire reasons. This one is not separate, but is in the basement and so could sauce keep-fires, nor has it a tunnel to the dining hall, but rather an open stair. Please be kinder and wait to say people don't know how castles were built when there is no opportunity for them to respond to your own opinions, albeit educated. We know less than you, but not "truly don't know."
