My Story Getting and Installing a Car Lift - Авто та транспорт
Thank you Brian!! You have given us so much of your time and intellect. I am so happy you got your lift, finally!!! You deserve it!
Happy for you brother! All the hard times your family has had, and raising your daughter, and being so helpful to everyone on UA-cam, it was time that you got a break and a gift!
How did you bleed the lift only thing you didn't show in the video
Congrats on the new lift! You're excitement is not weird, it's something only anyone who works on cars will understand!
great video man, thanks for making it. i have been wanting to purchase a lift for years now. the older i get the harder it gets to use a jack and crawl underneath the car.
Congrats Brian! Taking it to the next level. You really deserve it.
Now you'll be faster, how your back will thank you.
Good job buddy. Screw the people who tell you that you aren't qualified.
susan Sun k
Just watched how they installed a lift at JerryRig's place. Neither of them is qualified. I hope it doesn't backsire in any serious way.
Glad we got to use this bad boy to lift my truck 2 years ago!
Woah what’s up
Heck ya man! Can't wait to see you smiling like this next week!
Jerry gonna break one of these down?
Awesome vids guys..LOVE your channels...MORE MORE MORE MORE.....

A lift will change your life. They are so handy. I love mine.
The lift I have, came in the garage of the house I bought. I have no idea how much it was.
As far as height concern, you can remove your current garage door opener and replace it with a jack shaft (mounts to the left or right of the door and connects to the torsion bar). I personally installed a Lift Master 8500, and love it! You may also want to consider adding another garage door panel and then moving your rails up. From the video, it looks like your door rails hang a good 3 feet from your ceiling, you could easily get your door to come within inches of your ceiling, clearing up a ton of space. Keep us posted man!
sounds like a significant job.
You're an informative and well-spoken guy. Nice videos dude.
Call a garage door company. I don't think what you want to do is difficult. It's great to see you get a new lift, what a blessing that will be.
+Ed Waggoner Sr. (Papatch) As said before, a jackshaft opener is needed. BUT, you also need to change to a hi lift door. The hardware (Rails, drums at the end of the torsion bar, etc.) need to be changed. Not expensive but the right parts are needed. Then your door can go up near the ceiling.
Having a lift must be soooo nice, I know you need and deserve your lift. Thank you for all your great videos
LOVE the TEAM spirit in all the folks offering solutions for more overhead space/height as it pertains to the garage door, especially from those who do it with humility (versus the dimwit approach)!! Thank you Brian for sharing and making the videos. Giving, giving, giving is what makes the world a better place. God bless you and prosper you in your endeavors!
Thanks Brian for taking the time to make this video. I hope some day to install my own lift in my garage and have researched them to some degree. I am very happy for you on your new purchase and I'm sure your back with be too!
Congrats on scoring the lift. Good on you, man. Thanks for putting forth the effort to share these videos with us!
Awesome video! Been thinking about my own lift and this is great info. My boss tackled the garage door problem with Liftmaster Jackshafts. He had them installed by a contractor and had the garage door rails mounted as close to the ceiling as he could.
Looks pretty cool. I just bought a used one from a guy that installs new ones professionally - $1500 installed and I love it!
Hey man thank you for making quality videos and giving quality advice. You provide a great service and value to youtube viewers. Please take precautions with your lift, there are plenty of guys that get killed by those things failing every year. Stay safe and take care of your body.
Great video....I am building my shop right now, the first major tool im getting is a lift......very informative.
Thanks!
Happy for you, Boss. Living vicariously right now. Thank you for doing this.
I own a garage door service and installation company in LA. You need a Liftmaster 8500 jack shaft operator. You also need to convert your door to a "high lift". This will raise the tracks up within 6" of the ceiling. To do this you will need longer cables, tapered drums, a couple pieces of vertical track, some flag brackets, and possibly some new springs. This will allow you to use the lift with the door open.
Yep got three in my garage and they work great. Brian take note! Also love your videos!
Brent Riskey bmop
Plus the jack shaft operators are very quiet.
I did the same thing in my garage for my lift.
Biggest Problem I've had with the jack shaft Liftmaster is the remote has zero range. You literally have to be on top of the door for it to work and the manual states one car length range. Funny how the standard Liftmaster door openers have a good 100-150 foot range. Have never understood why this is.
Seriously envious. Lifts are righteous.
Nice to see you coming up Brian. I'm partial to your work ethic because I too was mobile for many years. I went from jacks/stands, to a ranger Qwik Lift. Then finally to a shop with an in ground rotary lift. I know the feeling of pushing a button and up, and up, and up it goes!
Congrats, and don't stop hustling.
+Lynx Star Automotive (Gabe V) Thanks Gabe! I appreciate it!
Thank you for this video. You answered a ton of questions that I have had about putting in a lift. Can't wait to see how you use it.
Side mount garage door opener will free up all of that space above.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. A good friend of mine just bought this same lift and I think this will help him a lot with some questions that he has. Great job!
"You have come a long way baby". Congrats. Looks like UA-cam has been good to you. It has been a long time since I have watched your videos. All the best.
finally installed my lift yesterday, I live down the street from the gregsmith equipment building and i still bought a bendpak thanks to your video, so take that gregsmith! lol
Congrats, Brian. Excellent video. I really appreciate your insights as I have been dreaming about installing a lift in my own garage. Please keep us posted with feedback as you get to use the lift. It looks GREAT!
You deserve this x10. Congrats man
congrats on the lift Brian. you've earned it!
Your back will thank you everyday. Happy you got a lift !
Love it. I have be n wanting to put one in myself. I put a masterlift garage door lift in and moved the door track to the ceiling.
Thanks for the great video. I purchased a lift earlier this year and installed it myself, but the instructions were not clear on how to adjust the cables so the locks would engage at the same time. Thanks to your video, I will now be able to get them adjusted properly. Thanks again. I enjoy watching all your videos.
Good video Brian. I can listen to you explain how to do anything, all day long. You're a natural teacher.
Brian, thanks for your videos! I work on my own subarus, chevy truck and now a ford f250. My next journey is a lift, just not sure what type I want to get but I have to rearrange my rafters in the ceiling and garage door opener so I have my work cut out for me.
Thank you so much for making this video. Blessings to you and your family.
My coworker had a lift in his garage. I was shocked someone had a shop lift in his garage. In My next house will have one installed since I do work on my own cars. All the best to you.
A great big THANK YOU back at you. I appreciate all the videos you do , I think they are all wonderful.
+INDIANA BOB :)
Hello, I enjoy all your videos, thank you. I just built a pole barn (hired some guys to install the door, a little out of my range) I have 14' ceilings, but didn't want a garage door opener in the way for when I someday get a lift. They suggested a jack shaft opener that turns the shaft where the torsion springs set. Pretty cool. Thanks again.
Wasn't too long for me. I appreciate the data and details. It's my dream to have a lift. It would make life so much more easy.
Thank you for your great videos. Keep them coming.
Have a really tiny garage here, had to put the lift outside on a slab, but felt uneasy with a 4 inch slab. Jackhammered holes and drilled 4 foot holes with the Bobcat and filled with concrete and have a cage with galvanized threaded rods sticking out. Lift works great and doubled my car storage space! Put a aluminum carport as a roof.
Sounds good!
Great to see you finally off the floor, Brian. Congrats!
Look up LiftMaster 3800 Jackshaft door opener on Amazon. That's the door opener I use. It keeps the ceiling open so you can lift right up to the rafters. I'm still saving up for my first lift. Watching you I'm more inspired than ever. Thanks for all the GREAT videos.

Thanks for this video Brian! I’ve had my eyes on a lift for over a year now, and I liked this video most. Tomorrow I will seal the deal... and it happens to be the same lift. I was worried that my narrow garage wouldn’t be workable, but it looks like you make it work!
Welcome James! Post up your picks on the FB page when you're done!
briansmobile1 update... the lift is made in China and they are out of stock until May 😕. Soon though. Hope you are doing well.
The video went long and I covered most of the intimidating parts. One thing that got lost in the edit is LEVELNESS. You have to shim it with metal or composite shims so the columns are perfectly level before torquing it down.
+briansmobile1 congratz on a lift dude, you live will be so much easyer now! i love mine!
+briansmobile1
Have you tested your truck on the lift.
Nice lift looks like bend pack off brand model.
Is your cement the Industrial strength
+DALE97DSM The guy with all the construction experience says it's 4,000 psi and only 3000 psi is required.
+briansmobile1 A Jack-shaft motor is one solution to the door problem. Your garage door guy will know.
+Don Chambers or just take the motor out and open and close it the old fashioned way that would be the cheapest way.
Great video Brian, I'm sure there is a fix for the garage door opener and that would really add to the lifts capability. You have entertained and help me out many times, thanks much.
Thanks for the info! I am about to buy my first lift. I was leaning towards Asymmetrical but you informing me about the allowance of using it both directions if Symmetrical makes me have to think a little more. But, nice video.
badass man. i miss working on a lift everyday. hope to have the means of owning a 2post angle lift soon.
Check out how Eric at South Main Auto has his garage door openers set up. That should provide some ideas for a solution on your doors.
I'm just now able to buy one of these for hobby reasons and really enjoyed what you had to share. Keep up the good work
I don't understand why companies are so rude if they aren't making money ...I am happy to talk to someone and even explain to them how to fix things over the phone ....hmmmm humanity
if they are paid on commission or minimum wage + commission then a non sale phone call is cutting into their take home pay, sad but true.
That's why some companies are more successful than others. Pre-sales work needs to be done prior to any sales. If I were the CEO of that company I would have called that technical support person who behaved like that.
Because they get in trouble for not meeting excessive expectations, and chatting with people every that interrupt that frequently can cost you your job
I'm in technical sales and I connect people all the time w/o making any money. I spend hours on the phone doing this. I mainly do it in hopes they will see me as a valuable resource that can help them and they will think of me when they need help.
Ahh because this guy is making a video about how much cheaper it is not going through Greg Smith. Not sure why that’s hard to understand. Why is this guy wasting that companies time.
That one happy mechanic. great investment , work smarter not harder.learning alot from your channel, thanks
Nice, man. I hope your lift is doing very well for you. I've watched your videos before and find them all very helpful. Thank you for this review!
Thank you Brian. Always helpful and informative. Hope you are keeping well.
keep up the good work. congrats man
I just found your video (2 years late!) and enjoyed your delivery and content. I have had a 9000 lb Rotary lift at my house for 15 years now. That and radiant floor heat. I am in my 60s and have not worked off the floor since. Don't ever get old! All of your suggestions were very good. I would like to make one more suggestion. Please shake the car EVERY time it leaves the floor. I do this at the back bumper. This checks my lift arm placement and the balance of the vehicle while aloft before I go under it. I (touch wood) have not dropped a vehicle yet!
Again great video! I bet you arrived at a solution for the garage door opener by now. Good luck with building your Garage Majhal!
We had two of those in our first 2 bays , they are easy to use and operate as long as its operated correctly.
Congrats on the lift assembly and sharing your experiences.
Thank you
You answered many questions I had.
Very informative.
Brian I think the best option for your garage door opener situation it to change out your door track to high lift track and for your door opener I would go ahead and use a Jackshaft operator as for brands your best option is probably a LiftMaster Model 8500 there for you can utilize your existing remote controls for your current openers. If you have any questions you can seed me a message. I do garage door and opener work as a side job I also know people who can also answer any questions you may have on this.
It's about time. Congrats! I have the same one.
What a great video. You have thoughtfully planned this all out. Your video is so helpful. Thank you very much. I just got a used lift and need to install it. You were a godsend.
Great video! I would love to get a lift of my own someday so I can work on project cars. If/when that happens, I'll definitely make a video on it!
Thank you, what you post is such an asset in learning and DIY.
You giggled like a little girl when you were talking about the lift, And this summer I will giggle like a little girl when I install one!
God I hate lying on the ground. best wishes to you
This is still one of my favorite youtube channels. Great job Brian.
+watcbd Thanks brother!
Congrats I hope you can get the garage door opener out of the way for even more height your a lucky man!
We had the same exact lift in my High school auto shot class and my boss had the same lift with the job I got after high school. They're great lifts.
Well instructed how to video with a story behind it. I enjoyed it so I subscribed, found your channel by looking for installing lifts and yours popped up with some others. You explained the installation the best.
So happy for you, good luck with it and looking for some really great videos as always, cheers.
Man, I wish I would've found this vid just a year ago! Would've made my life 100x easier!
I ended up buying one from Greg Smith Equipment in Oct. of 2017. They had a sale on their 10k lb. super-symmetric lift. Only catch was I had to drive up there (NH) and pick it up (hour and a half from central MA - saved another $200 in shipping costs). Was $2k out the door at the time, so I jumped. Problem was, I ran into all kinds of delays and cost overruns on my building. Thing sat under tarps on pallets in my driveway for 8 months! Not ideal at all, but when the price is right, you've gotta move. Glad I did, since they're $645 more now, not including shipping! Big jump in price!
My install was a little more exciting - I had the release cable adjusted wrong, so my 6k lb. Silverado came down sideways from full height! That was fun, lol, especially since it was leaning TOWARDS ME! Then after multiple lifts, I failed to notice the truck rolling forward on the park pawl every time I lowered it, and it slipped off the back of the frame as it curves upward - luckily the truck wasn't very high off the ground, and it landed on its wheels. Also noticed one column tilt when the truck fell! All the studs had pulled from the concrete! Had to retorque them all. Got my heart pumping, and was a couple great lessons to RESPECT my new shop tool! Thankfully no one was hurt or killed.
GREAT vid, man! Just wish I had found it sooner.
I would be in heaven if I had that! I've never done any DIY work on a lift. Always on concrete, grass or gravel 😂 Super cool!
I designed my garage around the lift I wanted to get. A jackshaft door opener is exactly what you need. I installed mine myself so I have no doubt you could too.
I have an 80x50 5 bay garage and I’m a few days from installing a similar lift and giggling as I lift it up and down. Very cool
13:02. Maybe it's not seen by as many as you hoped, but YES and THANK YOU for including those details!
I'm very happy for you! You deserve it! Enjoy!
I appreciate your videos Brian, it's great fun, educational and entertaining!! I'm so happy for you that you're able to work from home, I wish I could do a gig like that!.... Happy you got a lift too.. I'm 55 and starting to feel it... hurts to do my own maintenance on my 3 rides most of the time, but it's necessary financially. Don't they make a garage door opener that works directly on the spring shaft?
Thanks for making this video. I am looking to build a garage with a lift and you included a lot of good information.
Your idea of adding another panel (door higher) is a good one I think, not only will it move everything up out of the way it will also give you more clearance to get higher vehicles in, and less chance of the door being in the way when open, working with the door closed can be unpleasant but if it has to be closed to lift the car high enough you don't get a choice in the matter
Great video. To get a higher lift for your car, install a LiftMaster Elite Series 8500W. Your overhead track will be gone because your new oper is mounted on the side. Replace the garage door springs also
Hi brian, great video, i had a young guy living next door who installs hoist for his dad's company, and everything you say is very true.
i have a very old 4 post hoist at home because the concrete would not have supported a 2 poster. awesome tool for preventing back ache :)
one suggestion i would make, colored marks at one foot increments front and back of the post, great way to remind oneself of getting the balance right before lifting. (proportioned for an asymmetric lift)
Hey Brother, thanks for taking the time to make this vid. Answered all my questions
Very informative video. Thanks for posting. Picking up my lift tomorrow.
Congratulations Brian! enjoy your great and new lift machine.
A great effort and investment and I hope as soon as possible to mean in many job.
Great example at us, thanks to share!
Great video sir! Really liked how you went over so much info. Thank you.
Damn 8 years ago, Im glad you made this video im want to get one basically just like this!
Got the titan scissor lift myself, same as harborF. Can use it in the garage with low cars(did trans on Honda Civic).or in the drive way, I use 1/4” plate 12” wide for the wheels to roll. Lifts my k2500 burb with 7.4 no problem. Just sucks in winter(WI). Wish I had more room. My arthritis is thankful I have what I have. Happy for you, even though this is an old vid
Hey Brian, just checking back in. Hope you're doing well. Well, I finally am building a garage space that will house my post lift and wood working stuff. Thanks again for your wisdom!!
Hey Rob! Great to see you here! So happy to hear of your good news too!
Thanks for your video's Brian - Always informative and entertaining.
I think you got plenty of suggestions here and I will just add what I have done in my own house by myself. I installed a liftmaster Jackshaft opener, then I bought a door lift kit, which included all necessary parts (brackets, rail extensions, new drums and springs). At the time I did not have torsion springs at all and just the regular extension springs on the side. You already have the torsion spring setup, so you will just have to relocate it higher.
I am surprised you waited this long to get a lift, but you seem to have a plan! Good luck with it!
+Maksim Kosover I've never heard of a door lift kit- I'll have to pursue that.
+briansmobile1 Here is the link to the outfit I used back in 2011, ddmgaragedoors.com/parts/high-lift/custom-garage-door-high-lift-conversion-kit-quote.php
The guy's name is Dan and he was super nice, guided me through the whole thing. He has a form where you fill in all dimensions and he creates a custom kit for you. Let me know if you need any other info.
The jackshaft opener from liftmaster is great as well, super quiet, auto dead bolt mechanism, and completely out of the way. Good luck!
@@briansmobile1 I work in the garage door industry and yes the jack shaft opener is a great option and you can install it very easy.
Great video. Tons of useful info. My dad is thinking of potentially getting a 2 post lift for his garage. Some good tips and things to look out for. Thanks
Thats one hell of a deal you got man! Sucker looks almost brand new!
Nice job boss.. !! a normal guy with a new toy and shared your experience.. perfect.
Good Video, once again I was searching for information on something I was going to tackle. And once again I found Brian, glad I subscribed.
+Michael Ray RIGHT ON!
Brian, you are like a little kid with a new toy. I mean that in a good way. I am sure the new lift will help tremendously with your work.
Thanks for that, I've always wanted a lift myself.
Great video Brother. It's the first time I have seen one of your vids. A lift in my garage isn't likely but it would be sweet! Glad you were able to get one.
Thanks Tim!
I have the MaxJax lift, its still in the box this gives me motivation to install it finally.
Thanks for the video! Looking into getting a lift and this provided me with a lot of great information👍🏼
Having not a year ago purchased and installed my own lift, I know that joy in your eyes.
It really does change your life or work.
Nice job covering the important things like concrete and anchors.
I have a Greg Smith lift, 9VpV and I've had a 1999 Tahoe to a Subaru Baja up and it's performed well. Just make sure you grease the inner AND outer slides in the columns. If it ever sings you a whale song, grease the front slides/glides.
+Jmodderator
Door height issue..
Jackshaft opener and high rise rails.
This will bring the door up to the top of your ceiling where it will slide in from there at ceiling height.
Jackshaft opener sets on the side of the torsion spring and cranks up the door from the side.
+Jmodderator Thanks! Mine does sing near the top on the way down- I bet that's it.
Wow, you do read every comment.
Hope you get your lift smoothed out.
I don't always reply in a timely fashion, but yeah. Will do!
+Jmodderator Thanks!
