    I just started taking this! I used collagen peptides for a while but I did not notice anything for joints or skin health. On the topic of collagen peptides for those purposes I believe the verdict is still out. Maybe only collagen type 2 peptides in powder form would be beneficial for joints?? (I understand UC-II is different though). Anyways, I can't get around the idea that taking a hydrolyzed collagen supplement wouldn't just digest like taking an amino acid powder or protein powder. The claim that these peptides would go towards collagen building for skin or joints seems too simple. We need a study comparing changes in collagen synthesis with collagen peptides vs amino acid powders or protein powders. In the end....it all gets broken into peptides and amino acids no matter what the source. Where it goes is the big question. I bet if I ingested collagen peptides after a workout most of that would go towards recovery. My next experiment is to try something with mostly collagen type 2 peptides to see if joint health would improve. Maybe that would work synergistically with UC-II? I generally slightly lean on the side of collagen peptides being no better than just consuming more protein in general.

    Is this supplement proven to actually improve joint health or does it only reduce pain?

    • @nowfoods

      Undenatured native type 2 collagen is not bioavailable, so it will not contribute to joint health directly by supporting the production of collagen in the body. It is not a collagen supplement, in the meaning of supplying collagen for use as a structural material in the body. What it does is provide signaling in the GI tract promoting immune tolerance so that the immune response to traces of similar material (minor breakdown of articular cartilage due to normal wear and tear) in the synovial fluid of the joint is not overaggressive, which would make joints stiffer. By modulating that immune response, just one capsule of UC-II at bedtime can help to promote joint comfort, function, and flexibility. In that regard, its lack of bioavailability is a feature that gives it a different use than common predigested (hydrolyzed) collagen powders, which are taken at far greater serving sizes and do support collagen structures in the body, including articular cartilage, but without increasing tolerance for minor type 2 collagen debris in the joint fluid as UC-II can do.

      @@nowfoods Thank you for your reply, so if hydrolysed collagen doesn’t support collagen structures including articular cartilage then what does? It’s very perplexing how ingesting some of the building blocks for cartilage doesn’t help build cartilage. Who would have thought!

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  2 місяці тому +1

      @@fred1234fred That's not what was said. Undenatured (non-hydrolyzed) collagen does not support the structures by supplying collagen since it's not bioavailable. The hydrolyzed collagens do supply collagen to the body since they are bioavailable, being predigested.

    I have a joints problem. Please answer me,should i use uc-2 or biocell collagen?Both of them contain type 2 collagen. Thanks

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  5 місяців тому +1

      Although both products contain type 2 collagen the UC 2 product is undenatured and therefore not digestible so cannot nourish the type 2 collagen on the bones facing into the joint. Its purpose is solely to provide signaling to the immune system. It suggested uses to take one small capsule on an empty stomach at bedtime, so there is very little of the collagen material within that capsule.
      By contrast, the BioCell collagen is intended to be digested and absorbed to supply collagen materials to the body. It contains a hydrolyzed (denatured) form of collagen that is digestible by the human body. The serving size is vastly larger than the undenatured form, which is expected considering it is not a minute amount intended for signaling but is actually a supply intended to allow the body to create and maintain its own collagen tissues.
      Although these are different collagen products in terms of whether or not they are denatured, it is OK to use both products to achieve different end results.

    Is it necessary to take UC-II on an empty stomach? I'm wondering how UC-II can survive stomach acid & proteolytic enzymes in the small intestine. Aren't these factors de-naturing?

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  2 місяці тому

      Collagen is normally not digestible by humans. That is why we sell denatured (hydrolized) collagen products for nourishing joint and connective tissues. Additionally, the dosing is so low that it does not tend to trigger stomach acid and proteolytic enzymes. So the undenatured type two collagen taken between meals will not be significantly degraded by digestive processes.

    • @presence5426
      @presence5426 2 місяці тому

      @@nowfoods Whole collagen, raw or cooked, is a protein. Therefore it would be digestible, under normal dietary conditions. If you eat chicken legs or ground beef, you're ingesting some collagen. It's getting broken down by the same processes that digest other proteins.

    • @presence5426
      @presence5426 2 місяці тому

      @@nowfoods Denaturing I believe refers to the effect of heat or acid on raw collagen. Hydrolysis is the enzymatic breakdown of the collagen into peptides & amino acids. UC-II is untreated (by heat, acid, or hydrolysis) and therefore "undenatured."
      Gelatin is denatured (by heat).
      Typical powdered Collagen supps are made with a process including enzymatic hydrolysis.

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  2 місяці тому

      @@presence5426 It's actually a little more complicated than that.
      The reason for taking this product without food is because food matrix components such as polysaccharides can form insoluble complexes with pepsin-insoluble undenatured type 2 collagen, which hinders the binding of pepsin with collagen and strongly inhibits gastric digestion of collagen. In studies, there is virtually no release of protein from collagen in the intestine, making gastric digestion the primary mechanism of breaking down collagen into peptides and amino acids.
      Additionally, the point of this product is to expose the immune system in the GI tract to whole undenatured type 2 collagen, rather than its components, in order to promote an oral tolerance to type 2 collagen in the synovial fluid. So the intention is to avoid any even minor digestive actions on the active ingredient in order to present the intact molecule to immune cells. Hence the recommendation to take it on an empty stomach to avoid stomach acid production (a response to exposure to a significant amount of food) that activates pepsin.
      So while it's true that undenatured collagen may (to some extent) be partially digested via gastric acidity/pepsin, in practice commercially available collagen products intended to support collagen production in the body have universally been hydrolyzed via heat, enzymes, or a combination of both to render them much more digestible for humans.
      The low-dose of undenatured collagen in this product is not intended to feed collagen stores in the body or to be digested, even partially into peptides.

      @@nowfoods "In studies, there is virtually no release of protein from collagen in the intestine, making gastric digestion the primary mechanism of breaking down collagen into peptides & amino acids."
      --What studies? I'm sorry, but this doesn't seem to make sense. If gastric digestion produced "peptides & amino acids" as you say, those would be bioavailable in the small intestine,and it wouldn't matter that there was "no release of protein from collagen in the intestine." Further, if gastric pepsin can hydrolyze collagen, why can't other proteolytic enzymes in the small intestine? You claimed earlier that (raw) collagen wasn't digestable. Now you're saying it is (gastrically)?

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  Рік тому

      From a safety perspective it would probably be fine to do more, but from an efficacy perspective there is probably no need to double up. Taking one capsule will give you the recommended amount of UC-II to match clinical studies. The tolerable upper intake level for boron for adults is 20 milligrams per day, which is far above the amount in this formula. And none of the other ingredients are anywhere close to levels that would be concerning. But we think it would be smarter to add in other types of products rather than taking more of this, in terms of both cost effectiveness and efficacy. For example, taking a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM formula would support the joints in a different way, as would taking collagen supplements such as our BioCell product. Various botanicals can also be used for short term aches and pains, as well. Sometimes it's better to go wide instead of deep by taking a greater variety of nutrients and other substances, rather than taking megadoses of fewer ones.

    What's the difference between uc 2 and hydrolyzed type 2 collagen????which is better....does it reduces ur immunity????

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  3 роки тому +5

      UC-II is undenatured collagen, which cannot be digested and absorbed; natural undenatured collagen is not digestible, unless denatured (digested) into gelatin or hydrolyzed collagen. But in the gut UC-II helps to modulate immune signaling to aid in joint comfort, and a tiny dose - one small capsule at bedtime - is all it takes since undigested collagen doesn’t actually supply collagen to the body. Hydrolyzed collagen is simply used - in far greater amounts than UC-II - to nourish and maintain joint tissues, such as articular cartilage. The dosing, absorption, and purpose of the two forms are different; though both start with the same type of cartilage material. UC-II influences the immune system to better tolerate a small amount of collagen in the joint fluid, resulting from wear and tear on articular cartilage, without supplying collagen to the joints. By contrast, hydrolyzed collagen does supply digestible collagen to support the integrity of articular cartilage without increasing the immune system’s tolerance of cartilage breakdown products in joint fluid. Both forms can be used by people, but not at the same time of day. UC-II does not impair immunity; it simply better assures that our immune system is not over-reacting to normal wear-and-tear on the joints and has a healthy immune response, freeing up immune capacity for other challenges.

    How does this compare to Biocell collagen?

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  3 роки тому +6

      UC-II is undenatured collagen, not hydrolyzed collagen like BioCell. They are quite different in actions and dosing. Undenatured collagen works by signaling the immune system to react less aggressively to that type of collagen (Type II) elsewhere in the body; effectively modulating the immune response by increasing our oral tolerance to that form of collagen. Undenatured collagen is not absorbed and does not act as a source of dietary collagen; that’s why a relatively tiny dose at night is sufficient to provoke the desired modulation of immune reactions in the body to Type II collagen, such as normal articular cartilage debris entering the joint fluid in small amounts due to normal wear and tear. By contrast, BioCell provides much larger amounts of digestible collagen that can nourish collagen tissues by providing the same specific amino acids in quantities that the body can utilize to manufacture and maintain its own collagen. In short, UC-II is an immune modulator taken in tiny amounts that is not absorbed or utilized to make our own collagen; while BioCell is not an immune modulator, but it is absorbed and can support collagen production and maintenance when taken in far higher amounts.

    why every undenatured type 2 collagen contains sodium laureth sulphate, methyl paraben and propyl paraben

    • @nowfoods
      @nowfoods  5 років тому +4

      Ours doesn’t, so it’s not accurate to assume that all UC-II products contain those ingredients. The only excipients added to our UC-II powder are potassium chloride as a stabilizer and MCC, a form of methyl cellulose from trees used as a bulking/free flow agent. The only reason to use parabens is if you have a liquid formula because the pH and other attributes of that form make it unusually susceptible to mold; which obviously doesn’t apply to our powdered form. Similarly, SLS is used as an emulsifier in liquid formulations to maintain a mixture of oily and watery ingredients; but our powdered form has no need for that ingredient.
