There's 1 thing that many people watching this don't see and some can hear it, but those truly paying attention can feel the pain in Johnny's voice and playing because he still missing Robert and is determined to do all he can to honour Robert by playing his songs. I swear as Johnny was playing Kind Hearted Woman, I felt like Robert was Robert was standing right there behind Johnny with his hand on Johnny's should and saying, "You got this and I'm right here with you." Sadly both and countless other legends now gone back home to Heaven and I hope they're all resting peacefully up there 🙏🙏🙏
Funny im really into blues but only found him recently. He is clearly a great vocalist and one of the best guitarists ever. How has he not more known about?
For everyone who would have loved to have seen Robert Johnson in concert. He would have sounded similar to his old touring pal, Johnny Shines. This is pure gold.
Johnny would often play a club in my hometown, Graham's drive in or as locals called it keystone right here in Camden Arkansas history is everywhere look around
This is the closest thing to video of "how" Robert Johnson played. This is it. Listen to the vibrato of the voice. The phrasing.. And the rhythm and fingering. Unreal.
According to the legend, so I have heard, he played with Robert Johnson, when he was a young man… He learned from the best! And I actually had the privilege of traveling on the road with Johnny Shines and I heard the stories. Just ask Kent Duchenne.
"When we played for Polish people, we had to play Polish music. I learned “Beer Barrel Polka”, “Too Fat Polka”, as well as a few Jewish tunes. We had to learn them too". (Johnny Shines interview, referencing his time with Robert Johnson)
Thanks for posting this. Shines travelled throughout the US & even Canada with Robert Johnson in the 1930s and they were close: that's why he can play Robert Johnson's songs better than anyone else, although Shines' style is kinda more mournful than Johnson's, who could play different types of Blues (like Ragtime, "Piedmont Blues" from the southern eastern states, etc.. as in Red Hot or "From Four 'Til Late, etc..) in order to entertain all kinds of audiences. As a guitarist Shines was even better than Muddy Waters. He made both acoustic albums, like the ones on Testament Records with Walter Horton on harmonica (who knew Johnson when he was 13 in Helena, Arkansas; his older sister was one of Johnson's many girlfriends) as electric Blues, like the albums with The Chicago Blues All-Stars and Robert Jr Lockwood. The album Too Wet To Plow (recorded in Canada in 1970, if I remember correctly) with Louisiana Red (gtr) & Sugar Blue (hrmnca) must be one of his best ones. There'a photo from one of Johnson's sons, Claud Johnson, allegedly of Johnson & Shines as young men in the 1930s, one of the three extant photos of Robert Johnson. Shines passed away the very day I was supposed to (finally) meet him to open for him at the Gloucester Blues Festival, UK, in April 1992. Again, thanks for uploading this, you've done a terrific job.
Thank you so much for mentioning all the good that Johnny Shines did for the blues… I had the great privilege of traveling and playing with Kent Duchenne and Johnny, I did not share the stage with Johnny. I did share the stage with Kent Duchenne and I can tell you that Johnny was a marvel and it was such an honor to even ride in the same bus as Johnny in his last days His work was amazing and he was a true, blues musician. He embodied the blues.
That's great footage (and great sound too) of Johnny Shines. Though Johnny plays and sings RobertJ more properly I still really love Robert Lockwood doing RJ on his 12 string electric. Lockwood doesn't go for authentic quite so much but he really makes the songs his own! Still, this is great!

Im disturbed by how glaringly underrated he was and still is...as close of an experience of RJ from the afterlife as you can get, bravo.
My favourite blues man. Great guitar player and a powerful rich voice. He was a beautiful man.
i just discovered that Johnny Shines is family....my grandfather's brother...Music is definitely in the family genes...What a blessing.
You should learn to play!
That is the Blues
Are you from Tennessee?
he was a great bluesman, just love him.
@@kennyguitarallen5662 Saw him in concert in Chicago in 1990 and also have his autograph. Amazing show.
I spent decent amount of time with Johnny n Robert Junior what a blessing not to be taken for the granted or wasted 😎🙏🙏🙏🦾

Holy $@&$& your watching one of the worlds greatest!!!!!!
Yes, one of the best and greatly underrated....but never forgotten...anyone new to these archives will see what a treasure this guy is.
He's playing rhythm and soloing at the same time. Amazing guitar work!!!
A shame Johnny Shines never received the recognition he truly deserved.
More here now!!!!! m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3244748435569330&id=100001026151518

I just recently discovered him. So glad I did!! I think he's one of the best Bluesmen.
Simply awesome
Jonny Shines is the real deal, coming from DEEP DOWN inside his southern soul spirit - he ain't just playing tunes!
以前名古屋のボトムラインで、BBキングのスイートホームシカゴ聞いたのを思い出しました。いつ聞いても名曲ですね
For everyone who would have loved to have seen Robert Johnson in concert. He would have sounded similar to his old touring pal, Johnny Shines. This is pure gold.
It is my understanding that he actually toured and played with Robert Johnson… Ask Kent Duchenne to make sure😊
Awesome seeing a guy play and sing, who toured with Robert Johnson. Obviously, he learned from Mr. Johnson, too. Thanks for posting this gem.
I had the privilege of seeing and hearing him play that song! Johnny Shunes 😊😊😊
is a musical god
Musical god.
This man had a great sadness. I can see it in his eyes.

This is the best rendition that I've ever heard next to Robert Johnson himself.
mr shines used to travel an play with Robert for a year or so.
only person ever did JOHNNY SHINES proper know him well...love ya old friend
A true master! Love him. Johnny Shines FOREVER! Thank you for posting this video
Wow, Johnny Shines is epic, great Gibson he is playing.
It's a shame some slick music store talked him out of it. He ended up with an Alvarez. He talked about getting the Gibson back but probably never did.
loved it excellent
Oooo this is so beautiful 🙏🙏
Yes closest to Robert Johnson I’ve heard. Wish they had taken more footage of the the left hand. Truly masterful delta blues playing, fantastic

Required and essential study and listening IMO.
Great voice, great playing as opposed to some many posers infecting the internet
Regarding Robert Johnson material, Robert Lockwood, Jr., also knew how to play it.
i reckon a life story movie of this great played by Eddie Griffin would be amazing if taken up by the right director.

why are the songs credited to him in the video?
Pretty sure the first 2 are traditional songs Robert Johnson didn't write them.
Because it's french tv.
