  • Climbing up the near-vertical dirt trail in the all-new 2010 Toyota 4Runner Trail Grade seems pretty easy, at least until we get to the hill-climb's crest. The trail is actually too steep to walk up and the front tire on the driver side starts losing traction and the front end begins to slide off the trail toward a drop-off that borders each side of the incline.
    After stopping the SUV on the hill's face (and taking a few deep breaths), we engage the push-button Crawl Control on its most aggressive setting, grab on tight to the steering wheel and take our foot completely off the brake. This allows the Crawl Control to modulate throttle and traction control at each wheel to maximize grip up the hill at a slow and controlled pace, allowing us to just focus on steering away from the cliff's edge.
    A few short moments later, we crest the trail's lip with ease.

    If you get a new 4Runner in Limited trim I think it is just as good looking as a RR. The 20 inch wheels, chrome accents and front and back valences make it very attractive. It's not a poor man's RR, its a smart man's RR in my opinion too.

    It allows the front and rear axle to spin at different rates, which is an absolute necesity if you want to be able to have your vehicle in 4wd on paved roads, such as in winter if there's patches of snow and ice.

    I love the styling and performance to back it up. The i-Force V8 in the Tundra would have been neat to see in a 4 runner, but the V6 is nothing to scoff at.

    Its a practical, realiable Range Rover. Biggest mistake I did was buying 2007 RR . I thought It had a great deal, but those vehicles are plagued with electrical problems. And the off road capabilities were not as impressive as you would think or expect. The 4Runner really seems like a true off roader with luxury and modern technology into one.

    The JGC will have four-wheel independent suspension, and although it will have an optional air suspension for raising and lowering the ground clearance, that suspension will not be able to simulate the behavior of two solid axles when going over obstacles like the Land Rover LR3's air suspension doesn. So where does that leave the Jeep? It's just a VW Touareg with Quadra-Drive II, which isn't bad, but also isn't as great as it used to be.

    I have a 1990 Jeep Wrangler and it hasn't gotten me stuck yet, hoping to get one of these new 4runner trails to go with it, only problem is the MSRP is a little high for my taste. 4runner is the only SUV that I seem to like now a days, since it actually seems to be off road capable. I know I will use my Wrangler for my off road fun most of the time but it would be nice to have a comfortable vehicle that is equally as capable.

  • @MikeWrenches
    @MikeWrenches 14 років тому

    ...Continued. Nevermind that the trail grade model has a locking rear axle, which reduces the need to engage the 4WD in only but the most extreme of conditions (starting uphill on ice covered by a foot of snow, etc). The truck will work juuuuust fine with part time 4WD.

  • @amarrao95

    As a loyal Jeeper who still drives a 2001 Grand Cherokee every day, I have to say this beats the upcoming 2011 Grand Cherokee off-road already. Are there any other real off-road capable mid-size SUVs left?

  • @amarrao95
    @amarrao95 14 років тому

    usually a snowstorm will mean multiple slippery patches, and your t-case will start falling apart really fast if you keep shifting in and out of 4wd before every patch of ice you hit..

    True, but the 4Runner is a body on frame SUV just like the F-150. The 4Runner shares the same platform as the Tacoma so I would expect Toyota to release a redesigned Tacoma within the next year as well.

    @lastpally yes but Ford also never removed the 100mph speed limiter, they also drove responsibly, hitting a kicker at 80 compared to 125 to 130, which is the speed that these guys are bending frames, won't damage the truck, these are not trophy trucks, they are a production trucks with beefed up suspension. even trophy tucks won't hit a kicker that fast.

    Erm... I drive an early Gen III 'Runner (2.7/MT) with part time 4WD (unlike the later full-time models) and, I say this living in wintery canada, the lack of full time awd isn't a problem as the ADD allows the truck to be switched into 4WD while driving. Simply pop the t-case shifter down a notch, insta-4WD, pop it back in 2WD once the slippery stuff has gone by.

  • @MikeWrenches
    @MikeWrenches 14 років тому

    Hmmm, no. As long as you don't shift the t-case under load, there are no adverse effects to the mechanics. Also, you don't need to shift into 4WD for every patch of ice. Since my last post we've actually had quite a bit of snow, and even with 4 season rubbers (30x9.5r15 BFG AT T/A ko) the truck only need 4WD for launching uphill in only the most slippery of conditions, or if you want to stay in control engine braking down a steep slippery grade. Once in motion, 4wd is hardly ever needed.

    actually having you rear diff locked in snow and ice is even more dangerous because its can cause you to spin out easier on ice,and understeer on pavement.But the 4runner advanced traction and stability control systems should pevent you from losing traction on icey spots!

    Very recently Toyota Fortuner has been launched in India. It costs Rs 18.49 million ( INR ) and after duties, taxes etc, it would easily cost 20 million INR. And there are no other variants, its the only one and has 3.0 ltr diesel D4D engine all leather interiors, manual gear box and full time 4WD etc etc. I have seen that cars in the US are priced decent enough. This thing in India would cost in the US at approx 40,000 USD. Want to know if the one in India is worth the buy, please reply.

    Disagree, I think the 4Runner is a great blend between daily driver and off-road vehicle. My 07 is very comfortable as a daily driver. A Jeep Wrangler with a solid front axle is more off road capable but is not as comfortable of a daily driver and miserable at highway speeds.

    @darkknight302 yeah, the chevy traverse and buick enclave are perfect examples of all those ugly, shitty crossover's that are taking over, and killing the regular tough SUV, the 4 Runner, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Wranger, Expedition, Pathfinder, Armada, Xterra, and the Sequoia are all thats left, and more people are buying crossover's then SUV's these days and it makes me sick

    @1997cochise ohhh the 4.0 I-6 is legendary. By far one of the best American built engines. And yeah I hope Chrysler can pull it back together, gonna take a lot of work. But just for Jeeps sake. I could care less about Chrysler or Dodge. And Toyota is a great manufacturer, as well as the rest of the Japanese. They started slacking when they were made more in the US then the big 3. Our Toyota 4Runner has close to 300,000 on it now. Nothing done.
