I’ve owned this pressure cooker for a few years, but I don’t use it often. I JUST got in to canning this Summer, and I was actually considering purchasing a pressure canner to go along with my water bath canner. Thank goodness I remembered that this cooker has a canning setting, because it saved me a lot of money.
    Thanks for the video! 😊

Please do your research and go ahead and spend the money on a pressure canner. You can find them at Goodwill places at garage sales and then you can take them to your extension office and make sure the pressure gauge is in good working order and they’ll check it for you and fix it. Don’t take a chance on electric pressure cooker they are not approved nor are they safe nor can you be sure that everything is working correctly

I use the Power Pressure for hardboiled eggs, using that steamer plate. I put water in the bottom then 18 eggs on steamer plate. Use the veggie mode for 3 minutes then let it sit for 8 minutes. I have hardboiled eggs that peel perfectly!!

@@alextorres_2023 , it is the Power Pressure Cooker XL. “XL” is the model she has (I own the same one). It is an 8 quart pressure cooker I originally bought from Costco a few years ago. I hope this helps. The inner pot is not stainless steel and the bottom of it (inside) is dimpled which makes cleaning a pain sometimes.

I know you're excited about your new toy but you need to be aware of something. The pressure adjustment on that cooker is given in kPa rather than the PSI setting we all use in conventional canning. That cooker only allows pressure adjustment of 10-80 kPa max. 80 kPa is equal to 11.6 PSI which is no where near the 15 PSI that is required to safely can here in Reno.

If you run it for longer you can compensate for the extra 3PSI.

    • @laserguy3478
      @laserguy3478 3 роки тому +8

@@Phyto. Sorry, It doesn't work that way. Let's say you have a bacteria that needs 100 degree temp to kill it but your machine will only produce pressure which will get internal temp to 80 degrees. No matter how long you run that machine, it will never get above the 80 degrees it's capable of and so will never kill the bacteria that requires 100 degrees to kill it. Science is science regardless of how much you might not agree.

I’ve been cooking with pressure cookers for twenty five years and never knew that was a steamer rack! Guess that tells everyone how much attention I pay to the instruction book. I also didn’t know you could can dry beans in there. I love the electronic aspect of the cooker. Put stuff in, set your timer and get on with whatever else you want to do. It’s easier then getting dressed to go out and eat. Sometimes I use two or three at one meal. I always use several during a holiday meal. We love it. Every household needs at least one.

Linda thank you so much for your review. My husband bought me the power pressure XL cooler a year ago when we downsized our home drastically. I have been using the car shed as a make shift kitchen for us because we are in a travel camper with 4 people. I have always canned prior but this year seems to be hotter than years prior. I am going to break it out and finally try it out.

Linda, thank you so much for doing this review! I have a confession - I am a info-mercial watcher! But rarely if ever do I buy from watching an info mercial on a product. I have seen this product and my thought is exactly what you said; pulling out the big canner and going through that process when you only want 4 pints is not fun! I mean, I don't really want 12 pints of Currant Jelly! So again, thanks for doing this video. It makes me feel better about the fact that I thought after seeing the info-mercial that it would be pretty darn handy! And now that I have actually seen someone I trust use it, and love it, I'm gonna go check that baby out!

hi SpringsteadGal! Have you been doing a lot of canning with your pressure cooker?
I would really like to hear how that’s been going for you, if you have. Or if you gave it up, what about it discouraged you?
I’ve been doing some small-batch canning with a hot pot lately, just doing up the meals in advance for a month of working hard without time to stop in Cook, but I’ve been thinking of buying a proper canner instead of the pressure cooker, for the more long-term stuff, because I don’t want to take out the huge pressure canner that I use in the fall for small batches every month.
I really hope you’ll take a minute and get back to me, as it would really be helpful to have the benefit of the experience of somebody who’s been using that sort of set up for about six years.

The spring sent everything all over the room. I have an old one I've used for years from Pampered Chef, but I thought it might be getting dull. It certainly beats this company!

Linda, thanks for your video!!! I am now going to start canning my beans this way. I have been canning meat and veg for years in a pressure canner, and I have been cooking for even longer in a pressure cooker, so I do KNOW the difference. And now that I have an electric pressure cooker/canner that cooks and cans at a stable 12 psi, I have no qualms about using it for long term storage. People just need to think all of the canning aspects through logically before opining about it. Yes, I agree that the TV ad showing the woman laying a jar of tomatoes on it's side was a serious No-No and should be corrected at once since this is unsafe!!! But the principle and the cooking element/environment is still sound in my humble opinion. Always go by the Ball Book - nothing else will do for your food safety!!! But a pressure cooker/canner that cans at a stable 12 psi should be just fine. Think about it, and read your literature.
I personally have the QVC version of this but I don't think there is much different at all except that this version was slightly more expensive and yet it came with books and extras. As long as it is stable at 12 psi, it won't matter. Read your booklet.
    God Bless,
    Janet in MA

    • @lindamcneil711

I agree Janet. It is the stable psi the make the difference with canning and this one does seems very stable...the digital plate on the electronics is just as stable if not more than other heat sources. I dont have any qualms doing meat also. I have this and love it and I have been canning for a very long time. Thanks Linda... great job again.

@@janetbrown3349 thanks Janet. I will note that in my kitchen journal for later down the road. I got a chefman air fryer with a dehydrator function. I got it from Fingerhut, so I'll be paying on it forever. But with food prices rising like they are, I needed to have longer term food storage options.
It feels like my small apartment will eventually become a full service kitchen operation. Can, dehydrate, instapot and store. I like that I'm cutting down on food waste, but I'm also a little overwhelmed. I think I need a better plan than just grabbing random fridge items and dehydrating them.

How to sterilize water in a Power Pressure Cooker XL.
If you ever need to obtain sterilized water, you can use your Power Pressure Cooker XL by doing the following:

Power Pressure Cooker XL heats up the water. When ready it will sterilize your water in 2 minutes.
4.) After the Power Pressure Cooker XL has sterilized your water in two minutes, you can use the steam release valve to de-pressurize the Power Pressure Cooker XL. Be certain to place a clean kitchen towel over the valve before you release the steam. It will protect you from the hot steam and your kitchen walls.
5.) Once your Power Pressure Cooker XL has been de-pressurized, open the lid carefully by tilting the lid away from you and set the lid aside. Be careful, the lid may contain some hot water. Just pout the excess water back into the cooking pot.
6.) Now you have sterilized water. You can refill your sterilized gallon jug and use what you need when you need it.
Please note you can sterilize glass, bottles, baby bottle, sippy cups, pacifiers, and breast pump parts. In fact you can sterilize C-PaP face mask and hose.

I love my Carey/Nesco electric canner. That said, there is one big problem with your PowerXL. Do you remember when you’re canning on the stove with your All-American, when you’re processing, if the pressure falls under 10 lbs (or 15), you have to start over with the timing. Remember? Well, you did 45min, then you did a second run for 30 min. So, basically the 75 min processing dropped below pressure between the 1st & 2nd run. It had to. Also, I didn’t see it vent for 10 min before processing time started. Does the PowerXL vent fr 10 min? Maybe you shouldn’t use it for long process times after you figure out how to make it vent for 10 minutes.

MonCher : hi, my husband just bought a power pressure cooker xl in a garage sale which was new, old stock (never used ) and I never had a pressure cooker before. I was reading your comment and I don’t really understand what you meant by “ maybe you shouldn’t use it for long process times after you figure out how to make it vent for 10 minutes “ can you please explain that to me? I want to can meat, and spaghetti sauce and it will take a long pressure time. Will it be safe to can meat and meat sauce in this pressure cooker? WhT should I know about this? Anything that you can tell me about this will help me a lot and will be appreciated... I am nervous about this whole process, I really don’t want to loose or spoil my food because it didn’t pressurized it enough... thank you so much in advance.

Wait till you try you try a head of cabbage chopped into bite size pieces, redskin potatoes quartered, smoked sausage cut into bite size pieces, chicken, or turkey broth, caraway seeds, fresh cracked pepper, celery salt and whatever else seasoning you wish...lock lid and set for 20 minutes of high pressure cooking...since this cooks down...you can ignore the max fill level marking on insert pot! This can be an entree or a great soup depending on the amount of broth added! Love the resulting liquid...so I do a soup...YUMMM!!!

Experts say that using the Instant Pot to preserve your own food is much more complicated than just pressing a button on the machine. Guidance from the USDA and even Instant Pot's own website advise against using the electric pressure cooker for some methods of home canning. The biggest concern: It's unclear if the Instant Pot Max and other electric pressure cookers can meet the temperature and pressure levels needed to destroy potentially deadly bacteria inside canned food.
"This is not a cooking function. This is a public health issue," said Elizabeth Andress, the director of the National Center for Home Food Preservation. NCHFP is a research center at the University of Georgia created in partnership with the USDA to make research-based recommendations about home food preservation, including canning (you can read the USDA's guide to home canning here).

I have two XL's and the Carey,, been canning in them a couple years now.. the manufacturer does their own testing and if called for will submit those findings to the powers that be.. who complain they are not safe.. if so unsafe why don't those agencies , take them off the market.. ..because they say .. they do not know as they have not tested them or have no way to test them.. yet Balls electric pressure canner MUST have been tested to get their seal of approval.. In another comment it was mentioned the XL does not show canning recipes with meat in their canning book... the book shows other recipes that can be canned in it.. LOOK at the owners manual on page 11.. it shows a list and in that list is meats.. and the time needed to pressure can....its like the steam canner .. that has been used for years and was approved last year... and guess whose was approved first?? . I do not know of a law that requires a manufacturer to submit anything to the powers that be, to test and approve them. When I ask a customer rep, when calling Chard who manufacturers the Carey Smart Canner /Cooker if they planned to submit anything to the usda or nchfp.. she told me.. she knew of no plans to submit anything..

I agree. I just found my canning pressure guide for my PPCXL. It says..."A kPa setting of 80 is equal to 11.6 lbs PSI . AT up to 2000 ft above sea level, A kPa 80 setting on the unit will produce sufficient pressure and heat to safely process all foods for canning." That's what it says word for word. So, I'm going to be canning! They also included this...(www.uga.edu/nchfp/). national center for home food preservation.

Bought mine 4 - 5 yrs. ago; used it twice right off, chili and a roast. Worked well. This yr. we had an abundance of wax beans and I decided to can some. I followed all the instructions in the manual and consulted the Ball Blue Book as well. I hope someone can help me as it didn’t go as planned. When I took the jars out of the canner the head space was down around the waist. I had lost from 1/2in. to nearly 2 in of water in the jars! What did I do wrong? I used the green tool to slide down the sides and dislodge air bubbles and I was careful to stop twisting the lid ring as soon as the ring met the lid. I did the hot pack and all the lids sealed. I’ve canned quite a bit but I’ve always used either water bath or an old pressure cooker with the rocking top. Any help would be greatly appreciated. JSB

Beans is the same processing time as meats so I assume you could can meat in it as well but I have one question. In a regular pressure canner, they say that if the pressure goes below the correct pressure for you altitude at any time during the processing time, you have to start the time all over. Why would it be ok to process and then cancel and add the additional time and start again? Would it not go below the correct amount of pressure for a short amount of time while resetting it to start the additional time? Does this make sense? LOL. Im all game but I cant wrap my head around that. And Im sure you have a logical explanation. Id love to have one for all the other features but Id still like to know if that drop in pressure to add on the additional time would affect the long term storage, taste and safeness. Please let me know so I can order one!!
