For everyone who is new here, this the great man who taught John Mayer to play the guitar at berklee college of music in 1997!
Thank you!
If it wasn't for Davie I won't discover this masterpiece
EXACTLY!!!
Me too
You should check out his other videos too! Tomo is truly one of my favourite guitarists. He is amazing at improv, jazz, blues and funk
Thank you so much!! Thank you Davie504
True here. Always wanted to try different playing style than what im used to. Im gonne give it a try.
To a lot of people who have no possibilities to stay at that school in class with you. Thank you to share these videos. We learned so much. From a brazilian friend.
Thank you!
Marco Soares
Exactly!! 👍👍👍
Much love and appreciation to these vids
This is the video you show to people who say "rhythm guitar is easy"
Don't worry! Don't compare! Don't expect too fast! Be kind to yourself!
Thanks so much!
I've always found rhythm guitar to be a lot harder than solely melody.
Thanks for taking the effort to post this! I'm having a lot of fun trying to learn it.
You're very welcome! Thanks!
I am so glad I finally found a video of you facing the camera when playing Sunny, The videos with your students usually show the back of neck, Your rhythm playing is so funky & tight. This is very helpful. Thanks so much.
You're welcome! Thank you!
4 or 5 weeks in and I still can't leave this and the funky minor blues stuff alone. Thankyou Tomo
So nice to hear that! You're welcome! Thanks so much!
Just added "pitch-recognition ability" and the new "Harmonic Minor video”

Sounds lovely for a great funky backing track. Thanks Tomo! You are incredible
Thank you!
After watching this video a year ago, I gave up trying to learn Sunny. BUT... I revisited this video again yesterday, and spent 8 hours straight trying to fully get what Tomo was doing and I am happy to tell you, everything made sens e this time around and I can play this very funky version with all the subtle chord changes and rhythms. . It really is a lot easier than most people would think. What amazes me is the chords Tomo uses are really very basic. He just uses a few inversions and adds a few embellishment notes that most of us know and if you do not, you can find them online or get a teacher. This is simple "jazz" if you want to call it that. To me it's just a cool bluesy funky song. Call t what you want. Point I am making and reason I am even taking the time to write this is that anyone who really digs this song and especially this version can learn it. These are basic chords most serious guitar players learn in their first year or two. But why this version is so special (too me anyway) and blows everyone away is Tomo's amazing gift of being able to play so funky and syncopated with his right hand. So pay very close attention to his right hand . That's where the magic happens in this song. . I even recorded myself last night using quicktime to watch my right hand to make sure my technique was correct. The only challenge I have now is learning how to solo over the changes. I have been playing for 40 years (blues, funk & hard rock & metal) so of course I can play A Minor pentatonic over this and sound fine, but I like jazz cats and the sound of chromatic playing as well. . I know the pentatonic sounds good over these changes but have no clue what scales are being used and over what chords. All I hear are the chromatic runs yet I have to belive these guys are using more than a single scale and know when to change modes over the chord changes. Originally I thought they were using just an A minor/A dorian with lot of passing tones but I think I am missing something very basic. If anyone can chime in, I would be very grateful. have to believe they are changing scales when certain chords changes happen. I have never formally studied jazz so I am a bit limited in this area
And if anyone is interested, the chord changes I believe are correct are as follows:
Am Gm C7 Fmaj7, Bmb5, E/E7.
Am Gm C7 fmaj7, Bmb5, E/E7
Am Gm C7 Fmaj7
Bmb5, E7, Am E7
Am C D
Of course he uses as many inversions of the chords like the A minor bar, adds 9th notes etc. He also does a cool inversion of the Fmaj chord which he goes into immediately after playing the fmaj7 chord on the 8th fret for two bars and than goes into invesrion with his pinky on 8th fret 5th string on f note, ring finger on 7th fret A note and index finger on 5th fret C note. He hits that for two bars before hitting the Bmb5 and E7 chord.
He also obviously also just vamps on the A minor to C to D bar chords at the end.
What makes this guys playing so powerful is how simple the chords actually are. By using his right hand, he takes ordinary chords and makes this song extraordinary.
DO NOT GIVE UP TRYING TO LEARN THIS SONG EXACTLY HOW HE PLAYS IT. It is my favorite song to play and I get the feeling that I am a serious accomplished player when deep down I realize I know shit about jazz guitar. It's too much fun to play so do not give up.
One last thing. I belive it was on 3rd measure that instead of hitting C7 on 3rd position after Gm, he does this bad ass chord and plays what seems like a Bb7 and uses first finger to go from an f to e note before going into Fmaj chord. This chord is stats with pink on 6th fret. Watch video carefully and you will see what I mean. To me, that one chord change from the C7th on 3rd fet to this new chord cord which obviously can be substituted for the C7 really makes this song pop especially when the single note Tomo changes which is the f note to e note using his ring finger.
I hope this helps one person and I will be happy because the gift of music must be shared.
Peace out everyone!!
Bob, thanks so much for your notes! I learned something from you!!
You're totally right about! Don't ever give up! It takes time. Yes!
I play all basic chords that all you know! That's why you don't need any chord book to learn chords! It's very simple!
@@TomoFujitaMusic Hey Tomo...I never expected to get a reply from you. You are a good soul my friend. The only reason I even posted was I felt compelled to share my experience because most guitarists do not realize they can do much more than they ever realized. Music is just a mindset. As the late great Henry Ford once said " if you think you can or you think you can't, either way you are right". I am embarrassed to say this but it probably took me closer to 10 hours to truly learn this track. But worth every second because I finally feel like a legit guitar player even after playing blues rock for 40 plus years. There is something magical (to me anyway) when I can play the chord changes to a special song like Sunny. I hope a guitar player(s) in this Universe who reads this post benefits from my experience of giving up and trying again. Just takes practice and learning to use our ears. I came back to your video 9 months after I gave up the first time. So any guitar players reading this DO NOT QUIT like I almost did.
Tomo... are you willing to take on another student? I would be honored. I always try to find a mentor to guide me in the right direction with anything I do in life. Please Let me know about lessons. I would start tomorrow or whenever you are free, Is your cell phone listed anywhere? Or you can call me if you want to keep your info private. My cell is 512-998-7760. I just moved to Austin TX so need to get my mojo on and start playing out again. I need to mention something again for any guitar players who stumble on this this thread...pay close attention to Tomo's right hand and how effortlessly he seems to play rhythm guitar. Tomo is hands down one of the funkiest players I have ever seen. If Tomo takes me as a student, I would gladly post our lessons online so you know this is legit and I am not being paid by Tomo to endorse him.
I always reply to people. I am so thankful. Thanks so much for your kind words! I still practice my foundation..like clean triads, Root 3rd 7th swing groove etc. I have a lot of students from all over the world now. My Guitar Wisdom, we got students from 34 different countries. @@TomoFujitaMusic I’m in the process of buying a guitar for my studio project heedless and always liked jazzies. Seems like they are very versatile for what I want to do which is a hybrid of flamenco, funk, jazz, Avant garde and punk. This thing definitely tackles funk!
Exquisite voicings and rhythm!
Thank you so much!
Starting at berklee in august hope to see you there!
MrMortitionable good luck!!
What’s Berkelee like online?
I like that dry tone most people would put too much Reverb and other pedal effects to make Fender sound with too much sustain , this is good !

You really wonder why Jazzmasters aren’t more popular like Strats and Teles? They sound great! Maybe it’s the looks? 🤷♂️ Considering getting one myself.
Well originally the Jazzmaster was pretty much the most expensive Fender guitar in their lineup. Also I think people were kinda put off by its (and the Jaguars) unusual switching layout. Nowadays you'll see them used in everything from funk to heavy metal as they're actually a very versatile guitar. But I think that those were probably the most likely causes of why they never took off like the strat or tele.
Your guitar is So Nice. Yes, this music also.
Thanks!

How do you like the stock Fender Pure Vintage 65 JM Pickups Tomo? Asking specifically the bridge position.
Can I have tabs of chords for this?, this is amaziiing
reox Zeek Please!!
Pretty much the same chords to sunny. You can look em up and the diagrams but they are Am7, Gm9, C9, Fmaj7, Bm7flat5, E7#9 :)
They're in his book which is in Japanese, but of course the tabs don't have a language. I got it on eBay from Japan!
You have to do a jam with Dave, it will be amazing.
Hey Tomo, do you have a video lesson of funky/rythm guitar?
Yes. Here & my Guitar Wisdom site.
Sir, i have a question about jazzmaster bridge. Do you use the original jazzmaster bridge or changed to something else(tune o matic or mustang etc)? If you use without modifing, it does big matter about detune problem or string out from bridge??
Mine is all original. It's a bit tricky to set up right for this guitar. Jazzmaster has a unique character than Strats or Teles.
Woow!! Great video!
Does someone know if it's possible to find a chord chart of this somewhere? I want to play this song
Thanks! For chords, you really don't need any chord charts. I don't play any complicated stuff. When you face to something unfamiliar then you need to step back a few steps to fill THAT gap! Then you will know....
TomoFujitaMusic okay 😊, then I'll do it that way, thanks a lot
I can't figure out what you play at 0:21 right after the Fmaj7 chord... Is it F with a its fifth, ninth (G) and augmented 11th (B) ? Haha it kinda helped me just to write this but I need confirmation :) Thanks for sharing your work anyway !
FMajor7.... I played C/F ... F is bass and played C triads on 432 set strings (5th fret)
Then B-7(b5)... I played B-7(11)... Root b7 b3 and 11th on 2nd string (5th fret)
You're welcome! Thanks!
Amazing dynamics
Do you use any compressors?

Sir. Any tips on learning more guitar chord shapes? I only knew basic guitar shapes of C D E F G A B and their minors and also their power chords as well. I want to learn their weird chord shapes.
Learn triads first!
I teach harmony not chord shapes!
Learn about how to make a chord. Not just memorizing the shapes.
Wow Tomo! That is some funky playing dude! love those amps behind you, especially that two rock. Looks like you have a killer collection.
