I just purl one stitch every 10th row...plus I knit both socks, 10 rows at a time, so when I'm done the first, the second is also done! I've probably knit a couple of thousand socks so far!
I have been using this method since you so graciously answered my “what are all those markers for?” question on Instagram! And yet you have another Genius idea, writing the names/initials for the length needed ON the ruler! That’s a ‘why didn’t I think of that’ moment! Thank you so much for sharing this video! ♥️♥️
I've only started knitting socks and have used your tutorials for all methods and I Mark with the light bulbs. Such a great idea and so easy to count now. Thank you.
Yep those are my favorite stitch markers and I mark the rounds every 10 too. 🧶💕🧶. I line mine up with the start of my round in case I lose that stitch marker.
Thanks for this demo! I've been using this method and like it a lot. I also find that marking every ten rows really helps with motivation when it feels like a sock is taking forever.
I quickly adopted this method when I decided two at a time was too fiddly for me! It makes knitting the second sock sooooo easy. No second sock syndrome now!
This is so helpful Kay! I love using the light bulb markers. This video cleared up the confusion I had with how to mark around the heel…love that you just keep marking every 10 rows on the front of sock. Why didn’t I think of that! 😆 And no measuring needed for the 2nd sock. Brilliant!! I received my sock ruler and thankfully know how to use it now! Thanks!!
Love this way. So much easier then measuring. Thanks 😂 I hear so much about you from a lot of different you tube people needles at the ready, and someone from Michigan
I've used tally notebooks, but now I use my markers. Loved it, love it even more now you've switched to transferring from 1st sock to 2nd. Thinking of using in my cardigans etc.
Hi Kay I adopted this method ever since I started using your Vanilla sock on magic loop pattern its a game changer for sure.. I love it so much and now my socks are actually even in length too thank you so much😍🧦
Ever since you first explained this in a podcast, it’s made keeping track of my rows so much easier. I started been the Cocoknits Split Ring Markers instead of the lightbulbs, since I’m less likely to split a stitch. They’re a little less stable, but it’s worth it for the ease.
I make a chain of progress keepers. Say I plan on 50 rows, I'll clip 5 together. Leave one behind and move them up as I go. When they're gone, I'm done. I do the same with increases and decreases. I use a different color for different frequencies...like purple for every other row and red for every 4 rows.
I now do exactly the same as you. I watched your videos & felt that it was the most practical way ever to knit & keep track of everything. Thanks for sharing Kay. Cheers 😘🥰❤️😊😍💕
Thanks Kay!!! Do this all the time now,,,Never measure anymore!!!!such a good method! Got my tin of stitch Markers in the mail yesterday!!!love them,,Have never had rose gold before,,and the needle and rounds markers are perfect!!! Thanks so much,, Elaine🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡
I use your method...totally eliminated having to keep paper & pencils handy. I just ordered a sock ruler too because I'm horrible with getting accurate measurements 😆.
I love your tutorials! I have become such a better sock knitter since following you. I use the light bulb markers all of the time now and it saves so much time with the 2nd sock!
Great video. Great resource for sock knitting. I use my lightbulb markers the same way. The tin is great with all the markers and the small needle. I have your cuff down marker and the small scissors from your shop. I highly recommend all your accessories. They are great. One stop shopping!
Your tutorials are awesome. I have learn so much in the details of knitting socks easier. I have just started knitting with magic loop. I have tried a number of times over the years but your class made it so easy. I just ordered my second needles for magic loop. Love it.
I love your videos! I am going to start knitting socks again you are such a good teacher and you address all the issues I have had in the past while knitting socks!
When I started knitting socks I would use a row counter at then of every round and had a recipe for my perfect fit. But I would forget to click it and then have to count. Then I got cocky (lazy) and would knit away on the first sock trying on as I got to where I thought I needed to start the toe decreases. The second sock was held up to the first to see that it was the same (it never was😝) . When you talked about the light bulb marker method I immediately adopted this method! What a great idea!!!
I have been using the lightbulb markers since I saw you did that. Makes it each sock measures exactly the same. Measuring is less accurate. The only thing different I do is mark the row right after the heel and could to the toe from there. Years ago my socks were a little off with just measuring. So you have the best idea. Thank you.
You sock yarn is kind of like my yarn I got from ICE yarn. Love, love, love it. Thank you for sharing. It is a good tutorial for beginners. Especially for me. I am a visual learner so thank you. I am going to have to watch your tutorial for heel flap. I'm getting ready to start heel flap. Yahoo!!!
Great idea on the light bulbs have to get that tin. The sock ruler also helps. Looking forward to the next tutorial. Thanks so much Kay and have a good weekend.
I’ve always used the padlock markers in much the same way … but I do my socks toe up and 2 at a time so only mark one sock as they are the same as I go. You’re very systematic in the things you do and provide great explanations. Thanks 👍
I used to measure each sock and I would be off maybe 1-2 rounds each time which never bothered me. This method though is genius!! So much easier than bringing out the ruler every couple of rows when nearjng the heel and toe.
I’ve used stitch markers this way for years (though I usually mark every 20 rounds or each repeat if it’s a patterned sock) and like you, I would always have people asking what was up with all the markers. I was so excited when I saw that you do the same - I felt vindicated, lol! However, I’ve always pulled out a bunch of extra markers for the second sock, so I love the tip of moving each marker from the first to the second as I go and will definitely be doing this going forward. Thanks!
Thanks Kay. When I saw how you were using the lightbulb markers it was such an epiphany! That is the greatest tip. Now all of my socks are the same length. Lol
I use this all the time since you mentioned it on another video. I used to do the write it down, but then I'd miss one or lose the paper before the second sock and have to re-count anyway. This is just much easier.
I started doing this after I started following and subscribing to your channel. I was a pen and paper user too but found it annoying having to keep track of the paper, making sure I had it with me, packing it in my bag and pulling it out…Using the markers is definitely easier and more convenient!
I’ve been placing the markers on the underside of the sock. I like the idea of placing them on the topside. Next pair I’m going to try this method! Thank you Kay😍🧶😍
I was asked last night how I got on with tbe fit of my 2nd pair of socks...I told them about the stitch markers every 10th row and then shared this today when I saw it!! Thank you so much!!
Honestly, using scrapyarn for the same purpose is so much quicker and easy! When you're done, removing the yarn markings takes less than a second, and also laying it over the sock after ten rounds is quicker than opening up a marker, placing the marker and closing it. Us "old" knitters never used stich markers. I use them as progress keepers, but otherwise I always just use scrap yarn. Just a tip to save time.
Great idea to place a different progress marker where the heel starts! I made a mistake I can not fix and have to pull out the yarn at least to where the heel starts and this would have been a great help.
Thanks you for the tips on counting the rows...I would like to know how and where I am best to make the foot narrower as using 64sts for the leg and heels turns works well. ..however 64 sts on the foot results in a far too loose fitting especially when wearing inshoes...just can't seem to get a reliable way to decrease the foot count to 54-56sts.. your advice would be appreciated. Joh
I started doing this after watching. I am just to chicken not to have paper and pen near by. I am looking forward to you video of using the sock ruler.
Kay when you count your rows for the light bulb progress keepers and you are counting for row 50 do you count the row on your needle or the row below the needle for “50”? Another great video, thanks for sharing……🧶👍
Well, the 50th round will be the 50th round. Wether it’s on the needle or not. It’s just whatever is round 50 counting from the first round of the leg.
I'm amazed by how many people seem to find row counters useful. I've never even been tempted to buy one because I know how my mind works. I drift off, I daydream, I'm watching UA-cam videos and just knitting around and around, the dog barks, the husband yells, etc. How can you really know, for certain, that you remembered to click at the end of every round? I know, without a doubt, that if I used a row counter instead of the stitch marker method I would have two socks that did not match, every single time.
I just purl one stitch every 10th row...plus I knit both socks, 10 rows at a time, so when I'm done the first, the second is also done! I've probably knit a couple of thousand socks so far!

Since following you I use the lightbulb markers, and I love them. Makes life sooooooo much easier 👌🧦
I have the barrel type row counter that has a ring on it I use it to mark the beginning of the row as I go around so its right on my needle
Thank you for including a little on the sock ruler in this video. It does help.

I quickly adopted this method when I decided two at a time was too fiddly for me! It makes knitting the second sock sooooo easy. No second sock syndrome now!
It reminds me of second eye syndrome
This is so helpful Kay! I love using the light bulb markers. Love this way. So much easier then measuring. Thanks 😂 I hear so much about you from a lot of different you tube people needles at the ready, and someone from Michigan
I also use the lightbulb markers when knitting sleeves so that they end up being the same length and there’s no guessing.
I do this too! Taat is too faffy for me so I do taat but on 2 separate needles section by section.
I've used tally notebooks, but now I use my markers. Loved it, love it even more now you've switched to transferring from 1st sock to 2nd. Thinking of using in my cardigans etc.

I adore the sock ruler. I even gifted one to my daughter!!!! Where was this when I was knitting socks for everyone!!!!😎
I do use your method but I put the markers on the back side of the sock. It’s easier for me to see the end of the heel turn then count length of foot.
Me too.
I now do exactly the same as you. I watched your videos & felt that it was the most practical way ever to knit & keep track of everything. Thanks for sharing Kay. Cheers 😘🥰❤️😊😍💕

I have been using this technique since February since I began watching your channel and started knitting socks. Thanks for that!
I use your method...totally eliminated having to keep paper & pencils handy. I just ordered a sock ruler too because I'm horrible with getting accurate measurements 😆.

I love the stitch marker counting method. Thank you for all your tutorials. Happy knitting 🧶 ❤️
This video is SO useful!! Thank you very very much for sharing xx
Thank you, Kay. I feel illuminated about light bulb markers. 💡💡💡
I’ve been using this technique for awhile now and i love it better than using my row counter and wondering did I click that round or not
I absolutely love this method it makes knitting socks so much easier thank you so much for sharing 💞

I started using this method as well. It is very organized and makes sense. Thx a million.👍
When I started knitting socks I would use a row counter at then of every round and had a recipe for my perfect fit. But I would forget to click it and then have to count. Then I got cocky (lazy) and would knit away on the first sock trying on as I got to where I thought I needed to start the toe decreases. Hello. This video was extremely helpful-THANK UUU 🧦🤣🧦

Thanks! First pair of socks and using your vanilla sock pattern and light bulb trick, so far so good.

Thanks so much for you genius way of making both socks the exact same size. I will be doing this and throwing out my paper.
Great idea. Going to start using this. Thank you.
I find this way so useful. Marking every ten makes things so easy to count.
Thank you for the video. xxJane

Great method! Thank you for laying it all out so nicely!
Thank you Kay. Your instructions are so helpful and understandable!
I adopted this method when you first began using it. Thank you thank you! It makes my squirrel mind behave. 🐿
Thank you so much for your tutorials! I am using your light bulb marker method on my 9" circular socks. Happy Creating!
Thank you for helping everyone. Great tutorial
This was so helpful and clear! Thank you for taking the time to make this! xoxo
I love this process. I used to pencil mark it, then tried the counter and always lost track as you said. This is so very easy.
I used to measure each sock and I would be off maybe 1-2 rounds each time which never bothered me. This method though is genius!! So much easier than bringing out the ruler every couple of rows when nearjng the heel and toe.

Great information- going to definitely use this info as I am getting more knowledgeable about cuff down socks (thanks to U!).
This is a great way to keep a tally so I'll be changing from pen & paper to markers. Thanks for sharing! Cheers! ~M
I used to use those. I use a row counter now.
Brilliant! Thanks so much 🎉
Love this method. My new way to make socks. Thanks Kay!💕💕💕
Very helpful video. I use this method, thanks to you, and really enjoy it. I’m anxious for your video on using the sock ruler!
I started doing this after I started following and subscribing to your channel. I was a pen and paper user too but found it annoying having to keep track of the paper, making sure I had it with me, packing it in my bag and pulling it out…Using the markers is definitely easier and more convenient!

To each their own. Different things work for different people. ♥️
Making knitting more portable! Need that in life! Thank you for the video!
Yes, very helpful. Thank you so much. Very good tips!
I have sock ruler but never really understood how to use for diff parts of the socks. Thank you so much for help!!❤
Thanks for the tip on how to use the ruler!
Thanks for sharing. I’m on my third pair of vanilla socks in 3 months.
I love your tutorials.
I have used these ingenious little lightbulb markers the same way since watching your UA-cam channel.
game changing!!!
THANK YOU for counting rounds and not inches/cm! I have to have the exact same size socks, and I don’t reuse my measuring enough.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial.
Great idea to place a different progress marker where the heel starts! I made a mistake I can not fix and have to pull out the yarn at least to where the heel starts and this would have been a great help.
Thanks for this, very useful. I now have to get more light bulb markers. Hahaha
Love this method and have been using it for a while now.

So useful! Thank you x
I like this idea. I use a row counter but it is tedious to stop and click each round off and making sure I remember to do that.
I love ❤️ your socks. I would love to get a sock subscription box. Still trying to decide on which one I want to get.
Thank you! I use your idea for making fingerless mittens.
I had that problem. Pulling when I was measuring the foot. I ended up with a sock that was 1/2 “ smaller. Maybe I do need that ruler🤣
I love your technique! What size do you make your socks at? And what is the measurement at when you begin your toes?
I started doing this after watching. I am just to chicken not to have paper and pen near by. I am looking forward to you video of using the sock ruler.
Thanks so much I think I need to try shorty socks!
Hi, do you still sell the cute little notions tin. I dont see it in the etsy shop
Hello from Mounds Illinois.
I use a digital stitch counter
I’ve been using the
I’ve been using this method since watching your video on 9 inch circus. Makes it easy for me . Thank you
Hi Kay,
I have a question. How long do you keep your socks on the sock lockers, and do you wash them before you put them on the blocker?
And how do you know when to start decreasing for the toe on the second sock?
By counting the rounds. It matches the amount of rounds on the first sock.
I won't dispute your method but why not use a row counter?
Don't know about Kay, but I don't trust myself to remember to click a row counter when I finish a row. I like the visual of my progress.
