Sohei is pretty unique as you have to think about where you land your attacks and I was not using my brain while playing him. Definitely going to take time to get use to. He’s based of an actual Japanese warrior people though was a half demon. He had a personal quest to win a hundred duels and then he’d take the weapon from each won duel, fast forward he was beaten by one of the emperors sons who he then pledged himself too. They became outlaws cause of the heirs brother. To rob his brother of any honor he went to do sepuku and asked his ‘demon’ guard to hold off the samurai on a bridge. 300 samurai crossed and the Oni killed every single one though suffering some mortal wounds in the process but held his ground nonetheless. The samurai feared crossing the bridge again so they showered it in a storm of arrows and when it cleared the Oni was still standing there in his stance, waiting. For a whole hour no one dared approached but when one brave soul did they realized he had died in the arrow storm but there were so many arrows embedded in him that it held him up and pinned his arms out so it looked like he was still standing guard.

The biggest thing i like is his unique guardbreak attacks. Having them be different than his regular combos makes guardbreaks pretty much a unique thing for him. Honestly would love if a forhonor 2 ever became a thing that unique mechanic/animation should be a thing for all characters.

Making his kit less polar will just make him more fun to play with, and against in Doms. Better base kit but less insta kill potential during a random gank
I'm actually pretty hyped for him. The mechanic makes isn't easy to attain, makes him a bit more predictable when you see what weapons he still needs to hit with to get his big hit, and people aren't factoring in that you still have to defend with him and manage the fight game while trying to work your way up to the big shot
In dom with tier 1 and 3 feat combined its 149 damage ;) and i think its perfectly fine. Let the game be fun instead of copy pasted characters all the time
Nah, I'd rather not be one shot by a bash. Projectiles and AoE's are fine because you can dodge them all, and they have to wait to get them back. This is part of a character's kit. It's going to get nerfed to 50-60 damage.

They leaned too much into the gimmick that it made him even worst without it. Shaman is a perfect example of how it's done. A balanced kit centred around her bite, but it isn't all she has.

I have already said this in a separate video, but I feel like the zone will be integral to this guys kit. You can do both heavy or light finisher, it has hyper armor during chain, and it can be soft feinted.
I definitely didn't think about it, but I appreciate this guys animations being completely unique (or mostly, pretty sure some light animations were taken from Ocelotl).
Honestly, I'm glad I dropped this game a while back and just watching your and Tommy's stuff from time to time. If people are really happy to see this and willing to take it for just how interesting this is, game is really not doing all that well in the "fun" department and old characters with all their "reworks" are still stale as fuck, judging by the comments, while new are just about the same recolored stuff. Damn. If only Ubi would actually do good and unique reworks I might still be playing this. Oh, if only... I think this is very unique and pretty cool, I'm glad they also didn't just make his kit insanely simple and added some cool additions that aren't just completely OP. The feats are kinda crazy though in my opinion.
5:53 now that I think about it, this hero will/might be centered on guardbreaks against enemies, and the fires or lights or whatever will act as a warning signal to players to be wary. It’ll test people like me that rarely guardbreak and even less counter them too, also dodging.
I like this new hero tbh it’s cool to have something that encourages playstyle other than double lights. Still waiting for the roll catch on Conq and Lawbringer 😢
I really gotta give the devs props for this. They really made a very very unique character for once in 8 years. I’ve been playing since the beta and let me say that I never felt the chills for a new character releasing like I feel for this one. Yes I know people are complaining about the 95 damage. But let me just say this one thing about it. In my opinion 95 yes is like half of your health. But it really will be hard to get when playing sohei. You can only throw a second light after a light, you can only throw a second heavy after a heavy. So people will be expecting every second attack you throw since you can do light heavies or heavy lights. You are limited to that. So I think them adding the guard break soul filling option was a smart choice, now it makes people focus more on not getting guard broken with this character, just like when playing against a peacekeeper since all she needs is 2 guard breaks and she’ll drain almost all of your health. It’s really not much different when you truly think about it. Versing this character won’t be as hard as it seems. The developers only make it look like it’ll be hard because they are purposely letting themselves get free hits to demonstrate his soul collecting ability. But if you are playing against someone who isn’t a bot, it won’t be easy collecting souls unless you find someone who can’t counter a guardbreak, and for how little the damage on his heavies are for a heavy or hybrid character, 95 damage really isn’t that much when you really think about it. And it’s not interruptible so you probably can’t even pull it off when being ganked unless you are in revenge. And let’s be fr, revenge is not that great right now, so we really do need a high damage character right now to be a crutch to revenge.
He's literally just Benkei. I hope they do more heroes like this, it just makes a lot of sense to take from folklore or historical figures and build around them!
1:45 is most likely based on Bankei who was a member of the Sohei as well. Matter of fact the whole flute playing orochi 1000 blade bridge is exactly in Bankei's story in the end he dies like the berserker at stamford bridge taking out a bunch of enemies protecting his master.
The grab to 95 dmg impale should be slower and maybe feintable. Something like Jormungandr. Because getting bashed after a heavy parry seems a bit unfair. If it was a light parry then understandable
The thing i get from his executions is they feel last minute and lacking, like kudos for them putting the mechanics, animations, and general balancing of the hero first, but Executions are the one thing that really sells a hero. I'm sure there are still gonna be a lot of people playing this hero, and I definitely will be one of those people, I just feel sad that they had to do him like that. The first big and beefy Samurai faction hero since Hitokiri and his executions don't necessarily reflect the sheer potential he has for eliminating his opponents.
I love this. Ubi finally let their devs be creative with the hero design. It has been so long since we got a unique hero with a new moveset that doesn’t involve unblockables or bashes as the mixup. Although it’s just a nitpick, I think they should nerve the damage to the impale from 90 down to 60 or something like that. Imagine a four stack in dominion
This character seems awesome. He doesnt seem overpowered which I see tons of people whining about. He does extremely low damage numbers outside of that move, he needs to really work to get the move as well, his feats dont seem broken becuse the healing one comes with major sacrifice, he seems like a character where ubisoft put actual love into. He seems fun and very unique instead of the same boring ass bunch of characters we've been getting where their chains and damage are all super fast, super high damage, super ranged, super bland, and they all play the same. This guy reminds me of nuxia where it takes work but pays off if you do well and its very unique. He will also be subject to balance changes

I haven't played For Honor since April and I was thinking of maybe reinstalling, but then seeing a hero like this pop up I'm reminded why I don't. I love the concept of a character like this on paper and I'm glad they made the damage values... fine for most of his kit keeping the 90+ damage impale in mind... But then, this hero demands nothing less than sheer perfection or you're like to be destroyed. Some people may enjoy the challenge and I think among friends it can be a lot of fun messing around in custom games with it because you know it's all in good fun. In the hands of strangers you can only expect them to use Sohei and then trash talk you if they get you with an impale- which clearly wouldn't be that difficult to land. Then to imagine this hero in the hands of super toxic sweats instead of just toxic idiots... yeah... no thank you. I want to love For Honor and this hero but it's becoming more difficult every season. One positive thing I will definitely give the devs credit for is that the Hero is a beauty in terms of how it seems to play. It's not a single minded 2-button winning machine (so to speak), rather it demands at least a basic understanding of the kit to perform adequately. I like the idea of heroes having unique resources and this is the first hero to do it as I recall. Maybe someday I'll pick up the game again, if only should I have found myself more friends to play it with to lessen the blow of dying to heroes like this when I'm just looking to play for fun.

2:15 I see mercy kills as more of a quick kill in general rather than something clean or perfected, this is a quick death one that shows nothing fancy but gets the job done.
I dunno, he's weird and I think his gameplan is just a little bit too focused. If you're not able to get his souls then you simply aren't a character. Which means he's gonna be terrible when you fight him in dominon until he walks up on you with all 6 souls from the bot that's been in your match for the last 8 mins.
I’ma be honest, I’m a bit disappointed in this hero for a few reasons: 1.) The one handed polearm user trope is once again reinforced. It’s a personal pet peeve I have in games where a character uses a polearm weapon with one hand and because of that all the attacks are hella slow. The katakama yari is supposed to be a maneuverable weapon with tight point work and hooking capabilities which leads into my next gripe about Sohei. 2.) Why did they not include a hooking punish that follows into a bleeding light attack? The one thing I wanted most out of this hero the moment I saw his main weapon was for him to use the kama part of the katakama yari to hook the enemy’s weapon downwards, following up with a light attack that does bleed damage. MASSIVE missed opportunity by Ubisoft on that one. 3.) I understand that bro has a mix-up that does 95 damage. However, I still think his other attacks should do more damage especially his lights. 4.) His executions imo are flat out terrible. Idk what is it with the people they got in charge of making new executions for heroes now cause damn most of these new exes suck with the exception of a few (Warden, Kensei, and Shinobi). You would think a character that wields 7 weapons would have some of the most unique and creative executions in the game but no, they fumbled massively so far. Hopefully we get better exes for Sohei in future updates but for now both of his exes are just flat out terrible imo. Overall though I do like the hero I just wish that they maximized the full potential a character like Sohei has in this game and they unfortunately didn’t imo. I still am gonna buy him I don’t think he’s horrible and I like how he actually has to earn his victories unlike say Varangian Guard or Hitokiri for example. However I am a bit bummed and disappointed that he didn’t get more unique animations and attacks like a hooking punish into a bleed attack. Low damage to ludicrous damage Not hit boxes for team fights to free kills in team fights. And as long as you watch for the gb, yoh legit see what attack he needs to do for his remaining souls. So outside of his final feat, if you really wanna you can easly stop him from getting that soul for the one hit
This is actually really cool. You can play to avoid the one shot but your under threat of death by 1000 cuts. He does so little damage that the 1 shot gimmick is actually cool. Now when hes ganking someone i can see some issues arise. Dieing to a single bash in a gank is horrifying.

What people dont seem to understand is that Ubisoft does this EVERY TIME for a new hero. They give them high damage and something completely ridiculous and balance-breaking to incentivise people to buy them outright. Then after a couple to a few weeks, they nerf them and actually make them balanced. This is nothing new.

@@Jakoni7 doesn’t stop a shaman from getting her bite off, and in coordinated ganks all you have to do is force the opponent to block an attack to guarantee to ur teammates 95 (or more with buffs/debuffs) it’s guaranteed off sohei forward dodge bash (which is super easy to land)

Making his kit less polar will just make him more fun to play with, and against in Doms. Better base kit but less insta kill potential during a random gank
I'm actually pretty hyped for him. The mechanic makes isn't easy to attain, makes him a bit more predictable when you see what weapons he still needs to hit with to get his big hit, and people aren't factoring in that you still have to defend with him and manage the fight game while trying to work your way up to the big shot

Nah, I'd rather not be one shot by a bash. Projectiles and AoE's are fine because you can dodge them all, and they have to wait to get them back. This is part of a character's kit. It's going to get nerfed to 50-60 damage.

@ganny8149 I've been playing him for a while, and my opinion hasn't changed. I like his gimmick but he needs his souls to even be good. They leaned too much into the gimmick that it made him even worst without it. Shaman is a perfect example of how it's done. A balanced kit centred around her bite, but it isn't all she has.

I have already said this in a separate video, but I feel like the zone will be integral to this guys kit. You can do both heavy or light finisher, it has hyper armor during chain, and it can be soft feinted.
I definitely didn't think about it, but I appreciate this guys animations being completely unique (or mostly, pretty sure some light animations were taken from Ocelotl).
Honestly, I'm glad I dropped this game a while back and just watching your and Tommy's stuff from time to time. If people are really happy to see this and willing to take it for just how interesting this is, game is really not doing all that well in the "fun" department and old characters with all their "reworks" are still stale as fuck, judging by the comments, while new are just about the same recolored stuff.
Damn. If only Ubi would actually do good and unique reworks I might still be playing this. Oh, if only...

I think this is very unique and pretty cool, I'm glad they also didn't just make his kit insanely simple and added some cool additions that aren't just completely OP. The feats are kinda crazy though in my opinion.

5:53 now that I think about it, this hero will/might be centered on guardbreaks against enemies, and the fires or lights or whatever will act as a warning signal to players to be wary. It’ll test people like me that rarely guardbreak and even less counter them too, also dodging.
I like this new hero tbh it’s cool to have something that encourages playstyle other than double lights. Still waiting for the roll catch on Conq and Lawbringer 😢
I really gotta give the devs props for this. They really made a very very unique character for once in 8 years. I’ve been playing since the beta and let me say that I never felt the chills for a new character releasing like I feel for this one. Yes I know people are complaining about the 95 damage. But let me just say this one thing about it. In my opinion 95 yes is like half of your health. But it really will be hard to get when playing sohei. You can only throw a second light after a light, you can only throw a second heavy after a heavy. So people will be expecting every second attack you throw since you can do light heavies or heavy lights. You are limited to that. So I think them adding the guard break soul filling option was a smart choice, now it makes people focus more on not getting guard broken with this character, just like when playing against a peacekeeper since all she needs is 2 guard breaks and she’ll drain almost all of your health. It’s really not much different when you truly think about it. Versing this character won’t be as hard as it seems. The developers only make it look like it’ll be hard because they are purposely letting themselves get free hits to demonstrate his soul collecting ability. But if you are playing against someone who isn’t a bot, it won’t be easy collecting souls unless you find someone who can’t counter a guardbreak, and for how little the damage on his heavies are for a heavy or hybrid character, 95 damage really isn’t that much when you really think about it. And it’s not interruptible so you probably can’t even pull it off when being ganked unless you are in revenge. And let’s be fr, revenge is not that great right now, so we really do need a high damage character right now to be a crutch to revenge.
Fun fact for Final Fantasy fans: Benkei, the individual this hero os based on, also served as the inspiration for Gilgamesh.

He's literally just Benkei. I hope they do more heroes like this, it just makes a lot of sense to take from folklore or historical figures and build around them!
1:45 is most likely based on Bankei who was a member of the Sohei as well. Matter of fact the whole flute playing orochi 1000 blade bridge is exactly in Bankei's story in the end he dies like the berserker at stamford bridge taking out a bunch of enemies protecting his master.
I think he shouldn’t be able to go for his bash after a heavy parry, i feel like that’s a bit cheap. After a GB or light parry it makes more sense
The grab to 95 dmg impale should be slower and maybe feintable. Something like Jormungandr. Because getting bashed after a heavy parry seems a bit unfair. If it was a light parry then understandable
The thing i get from his executions is they feel last minute and lacking, like kudos for them putting the mechanics, animations, and general balancing of the hero first, but Executions are the one thing that really sells a hero. I'm sure there are still gonna be a lot of people playing this hero, and I definitely will be one of those people, I just feel sad that they had to do him like that. The first big and beefy Samurai faction hero since Hitokiri and his executions don't necessarily reflect the sheer potential he has for eliminating his opponents.

This character seems awesome. He doesnt seem overpowered which I see tons of people whining about. He does extremely low damage numbers outside of that move, he needs to really work to get the move as well, his feats dont seem broken becuse the healing one comes with major sacrifice, he seems like a character where ubisoft put actual love into. He seems fun and very unique instead of the same boring ass bunch of characters we've been getting where their chains and damage are all super fast, super high damage, super ranged, super bland, and they all play the same. This guy reminds me of nuxia where it takes work but pays off if you do well and its very unique. He will also be subject to balance changes

I haven't played For Honor since April and I was thinking of maybe reinstalling, but then seeing a hero like this pop up I'm reminded why I don't.
I love the concept of a character like this on paper and I'm glad they made the damage values... fine for most of his kit keeping the 90+ damage impale in mind...
But then, this hero demands nothing less than sheer perfection or you're like to be destroyed. Some people may enjoy the challenge and I think among friends it can be a lot of fun messing around in custom games with it because you know it's all in good fun. In the hands of strangers you can only expect them to use Sohei and then trash talk you if they get you with an impale- which clearly wouldn't be that difficult to land. Then to imagine this hero in the hands of super toxic sweats instead of just toxic idiots... yeah... no thank you.
I want to love For Honor and this hero but it's becoming more difficult every season.
One positive thing I will definitely give the devs credit for is that the Hero is a beauty in terms of how it seems to play. It's not a single minded 2-button winning machine (so to speak), rather it demands at least a basic understanding of the kit to perform adequately. I like the idea of heroes having unique resources and this is the first hero to do it as I recall.
Maybe someday I'll pick up the game again, if only should I have found myself more friends to play it with to lessen the blow of dying to heroes like this when I'm just looking to play for fun.

I dunno, he's weird and I think his gameplan is just a little bit too focused. If you're not able to get his souls then you simply aren't a character. Which means he's gonna be terrible when you fight him in dominon until he walks up on you with all 6 souls from the bot that's been in your match for the last 8 mins.

I’ma be honest, I’m a bit disappointed in this hero for a few reasons:
1.) The one handed polearm user trope is once again reinforced. It’s a personal pet peeve I have in games where a character uses a polearm weapon with one hand and because of that all the attacks are hella slow. The katakama yari is supposed to be a maneuverable weapon with tight point work and hooking capabilities which leads into my next gripe about Sohei.
2.) Why did they not include a hooking punish that follows into a bleeding light attack? The one thing I wanted most out of this hero the moment I saw his main weapon was for him to use the kama part of the katakama yari to hook the enemy’s weapon downwards, following up with a light attack that does bleed damage. MASSIVE missed opportunity by Ubisoft on that one.
3.) I understand that bro has a mix-up that does 95 damage. However, I still think his other attacks should do more damage especially his lights.
4.) His executions imo are flat out terrible. Idk what is it with the people they got in charge of making new executions for heroes now cause damn most of these new exes suck with the exception of a few (Warden, Kensei, and Shinobi). You would think a character that wields 7 weapons would have some of the most unique and creative executions in the game but no, they fumbled massively so far. Hopefully we get better exes for Sohei in future updates but for now both of his exes are just flat out terrible imo.
Overall though I do like the hero I just wish that they maximized the full potential a character like Sohei has in this game and they unfortunately didn’t imo. I still am gonna buy him I don’t think he’s horrible and I like how he actually has to earn his victories unlike say Varangian Guard or Hitokiri for example. However I am a bit bummed and disappointed that he didn’t get more unique animations and attacks like a hooking punish into a bleed attack.

Then after a couple to a few weeks, they nerf them and actually make them balanced.
