  • In the first installment of WeldScience, I modify the thumb and dozer blade on my mini excavator.
For this video I used my Lincoln Ranger 330mpx, LN-25x feeder, and Joe’s sledgehammer.
    Weld Settings:
    Lincoln 71a85 .052 with 75% Ar 25% Co2
    375ipm 26.5v ~250amps

I like your thinking. I got into welding in 1970. I did b/c I recognized with welding, I could make what has never been made b4. It has been a marvelous adventure. From aluminum dump truck bodies, carbon & s/s pipes, stainless chemical tanks, paper mills, hospital boiler rooms...my fav...Va Hospital boiler rooms. Worked with an older fitter/weldor who showed me about resisting warping material by applying a wet rag in the right places. He said, "Always have a bucket with water in it and a rag." We were able to get 6" and smaller pipe flanges to within the millwrights specs. (the pipe flanges to the pumps flanges). Only by t.i.g.welding (did not add wire) a pass on the side of the pipe holding the flange then, applying the wet rag in the right place, the flanges moved. Very helpful to know this.
    I have a JD 35g, really a great machine.
    All the best, Pete

Love it man, good little intro video. You incorporated the welder generator, Mini excavator, two welders/fabricators, tasks, refinement to a product, all in 5min! It gives viewers an outlook at potential when you can weld, and have the right equipment, as well as having fun doing it. Good stuff man 🦾

The PowerWave video is coming!! Trying to sort out what process to show off first. Every mode is just the most refined example of each process.

Awesome video Nate! I'm excited to see more videos. I hope you post some videos of your trailer I heard you and Jason talk about it on arc junkies.

What a great watch! Can I ask why you tacked with stick and finished with flux wire fed? Was it just for efficiency?

Thanks for checking it out! There were a couple small gaps that I wanted to fill in before I welded it out. I also wanted to demonstrate how well the machine could run 6010, because it’s the rod that usually gives people trouble. Ideally this mod would have been done in position, inside a shop, with metalcore or solid wire in spray transfer.

@@weldscientistI have a couple of Pipeliner customers who are using their MPX 330 machines to make XX10 stick rod X-Ray quality welds daily. The MPX 330 is a great machine other than making repairs and performing maintenance on such a compact machine. They packed everything inside of it realy tight. I wish you and yours all the very best, Kevin

Great quality video (obviously). I was going to caution you about adding to the blade height... the Push of the machine is matched to the drive motors. But you didn't over-do it. Plus you added rigidity to the blade...👍. Still, i'd have preferred to see wings (removable) added to the blade instead; to me that's the limitation to these smaller machines. The thumb.... well that is very slick. Seems like a no-brainer, once we all see it. But thumbs are complicated, unintuitive, science. Simplicity seems to be key. Basically Anything you add, seems to create drawbacks later on.. (in this case, grasping something spherical, like rocks. (plus you lose clamping strength with each added bit of metal making contact). Still, that's nice. Bobcat has an accessory thumb that is two-piece and articulates inward, on the end. (might have a patent on it?). Hopefully you get back to us all when you have a good idea how these mods are working out... inspirational. Thanx~

Thank you George. That spill guard is mostly for preventing things from coming over the blade. I agree some removable wings would be nice to have on there as well. So far no issues with any of it. The dirt curls off the blade so nice now👌🏽So far the thumb has been great. Picking up most rocks only 2 tines are holding at any given time. If anything it makes it easier to grab odd shapes with all the extra points of contact available. I like your idea for an update video! I post a lot of pics and videos on my Instagram if ya wanted to see more of it in the meantime. Thanks again dude👊🏽

Update! Still working out excellent. I think if I did it again I would make the spill guard 5/16” instead of 1/4” thick. I’d also cut radiuses in the gussets and space them out across the whole width of the blade. No issues currently, but you could potentially bend it up if you were trying to carry something using that blade to assist. The thumb mod is working out too. It’s much easier to grab smaller brush when clearing.

@@weldscientist Hey who is the Manufacturer of the cutting edge?
Nice Project & Great Cinematography, can’t wait to do these mods as well as removable wings😎

@@mr_regenerative That cutting edge is called Sharqplate. You can get it from a company called Genalco. Good luck on your mods!!
