I've been all over Europe, am 68 and travelled by rail, staying at hostels. Portugal is a beautiful Country with well-educated, multi lingual people. Porto is my choice. Beautiful City. River running through it. Great bike paths. Wineries close by. there's a soft spot for Portugal in my heart.
I played pro basketball in Portugal years ago. One of the things I remember most is seeing little kids outside playing at 12 midnight by themselves. I couldn't believe it, lol.

The biggest single barrier for expats is always the same, speaking the language. I've lived in Italy for +20 years, am fully integrated with NO expat friends. Agree with John's analysis 100% and for me Portugal is up there in Europe.
We were beginning a residency visa in Portugal when everything went down in 2019-2020. Since we couldn't travel, the Visa was cancelled. I still in my heart want so much to begin this again. Having lived in Spain (Cantabria) and traveled throughout all Europe...indeed, Algarve was my favorite for all the reasons mentioned here. The issue is residency. Not all people bring loads of cash. Since a non EU person can only stay 90 days for every 180 days (if I recall correctly). I have met people who stay as nearly permanent residents and have no problems ongoing daily. I have never heard of a US person being deported for staying too long....

Once I was told that most of art work of Portugal were located in Lisbon expensive palaces and all of them were destroyed in 1756 earthquake, and after that Portugal had to rebuild its capital instead spend money in noble things and Portugal faced a strong of problems that culminated in the end of monarchy and a long debated of dictatorship. Actually the place with the most valuable art of Portugal is quite recently constituted and belongs to a Berardo, thanks to money he spent in art word we can say Lisbon has a meaningful museum (in terms of international value of art words). But it’s only one, there other are more inventive museums but without worldwide well known art work. Only one is nothing if you compre to other capital cities like London, Paris or as he mentioned Rome (or even Madrid and Berlin). But I guess he will get kinda surprised when he gets to Lisbon and see himself surround for thousand of years of history, even though Lisbon lacks more meaningful museums (or museums of a world) it’s shows off big history all around. However we must understand that what he knows of Lisbon so far is Algarve and Algarve is not the most history place in Portugal, it’s more a beach paradise tourism oriented
My husband and I recently moved to Tennessee from California and it is beautiful here it cost us last healthcare is wonderful gas is cheaper groceries are cheaper and we are retired so we are giving to the state not taking away from the state and it is green year round we have more water than we need we don’t even have a irrigation system because we get enough rain here.

I want to escape the US for the same reasons you did, and I have traveled internationally, but my husband is not the adventurer type. We're 66-70. I found him to be a bit pretensious.Executive job, made good money in the US , lived in expensive neighborhoods , has good pensions ( 401 k etc) but has to leave the US in his retirement .I wonder if it was due to politics because he mentions a certain President whom i think he despised.Is he happy with current puppet president in the White House? ED story was another one.His gf had a finger injury , he takes her to ED , the doctor stitched it up and voila , thousands of dollars.He didn't say if she had surgery .Did she not have insurance? Wow, people from states, England and other countries are moving to Portugal because cost of living is cheap but they don’t get it that is only cheap for them because they made their money in their countries. Wow; this guy is probably one of the most levelheaded and reasonable guy I've seen, and I agree with basically everything he said. Good Mexican food is hard to come by in Portugal! The only things I have qualms about is how he mispronounced _kilometres_ and how he thinks Portuguese is hard to learn.
Just one thing...in Portugal we use to speak...imagine...portuguese. So, perhaps a different approach about the language (as to learn some portuguese like other people does), and a better attitude about embracing the local culture i believe it will have better results.

I decided to move to Braga because is cheaper to live for one person than Porto. I have been several videos and Braga looks only 40 minutes to Spain where has family a lot close friends. Wanted ti buy 2/2 apartment or maybe small house after 2 or 3 years living there. Now, I am going to retiree and try to get a different place than USA (Miami,) is really expensive this days.
If I can find a small apartment house around $100-150k I can afford to live off 3k a month off my pension. 58 yrs old. Still surfing 🏄♂️ use to cold northern California water.

That was a great interview with John. Loved it. John try to learn Portuguese with the locals if you speak Spanish and/or French you have a leg up in learning the language. If it is any consolation, The Portuguese Language is very hard even for the natives. My advice to you, John, do not worry about the correct tenses of the verbs say for example You want to buy a car or anything... Eu quero comprar um carro (I want to buy a car/house/apart/etc) Just say (pointing to your chest) "Eu comprar carro" (anybody will understand you...) lol... Then the right conjugation of the verb will come with dealing with people. At least try to say a word or two in Portuguese and the locals will help you. Most of the Portuguese courses online are from Brazil which has a different accent and ways of saying things (Like the American and British English). Yes, If you speak Spanish and French you know they have masculine and feminine for most words if not all. The same goes for Portuguese, Italian... The best way is to stop thinking in English and focus in the language you are learning (hard to do but you can do it). I was born in Funchal, Madeira island (Portugal) and it is a touristic place. When I was a child, many foreigners visited Madeira and we also had neighbours from UK, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Australia, Venezuela, etc. and they would ask us, kids, how to say this or that in Portuguese. (sometimes we got a foreigner coin. lol). They also tried to make conversation with the adults... Remember John, Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. You have to try to learn it and not expect them to accommodate you in your mother-tongue. All the immigrants have to learn English once they are in North American. All services are in English and not the language which they learned when they were born. Many years ago, while in High School, I was a touristic guide In Madeira and we had to know Portuguese, English, French, German and Swedish even the bus drivers had to speak English and one or more other languages. Times have changed and Most services are done in English which is the official language of the E.U.. Most young people speak English (sometimes they do not want to bother with you!!! hahahaha like my nieces and nephews who started to learn since they are little kids). My Canadian born kids visit Portugal and they have no issues communicating in English. My son download an app to his iPad so he could speak with his grandmother. He speaks to it in English and it translates into Portuguese and vice versa. In Canada, I had foreigners doing the same since I worked at a front desk in my later years... Good Luck John in Portugal. Please visit Madeira Island. You have direct flights from Faro to Funchal and return. Yeah! eventually you will get hang of Portuguese... Portugal's Portuguese is almost impossible for foreigners to learn. It's time stressed like British English with a Cockney like pronunciation. I'm a native speaker, also a Portuguese citizen, sometimes I have no freaking idea what people are saying. It's frustrating.
I live in California. I am learning Spanish now because I want to. I plan to learn French and Portuguese also. However in the US many Hispanic people won't learn English they accommodate all Spanish speakers here. Some have been here 40 plus years and some are young people born here but don't speak English. I know it's difficult learning a new language but like I heard someone say keep at it.

The government offers services in different languages... If you look at people in the government of Canada, you think Canada is a foreigner country!!!... You are right to learn a new language at least dedicate some time of your day to learn your lesson. I think the best way is to start reading kids books Like the ABC's... Once you master that you go to the next level... Baby steps. I speak several languages and for me, learning a new language comes natural to me. My maternal grandfather was an American citizen and he spoke Portuglish (mix of Portuguese and English). He could speak English fluently but when he returned he could barely speak Portuguese. He used to teach English words and I took interest in learning the language. Portuguese is not an easy language to learn even for the natives. I studied hard to have high marks in school so I did not have to go through exams in High School. I had a Portuguese teacher that inspired me to like the language but frankly it was not my cup of tea. He taught us Latin and Portuguese (yes, at that time they taught Latin!). Once you learn the roots it is much easier to learn at upper levels. My advice is to start small... Learn the basics and after you can learn the difficult levels of the language. @@brauliocavalcanti3703 Braulio, I think your problem is not understanding the language but listening. Listening is an art. It is like listening to music... If you know how to listen you enjoy the music but most people can't understand music. I learned British English (Oxford) and when I came to Canada, It sounded a total different language and as the years progressed, people can't speak English anymore (too many foreigners)... In Portugal, depending of the region, people speak in different accents that sometimes is hard to understand. Some people in the North of Portugal speak Mirandese Language (an Asturleonese Language) and people close to the borders of Spain also speak a mix of Portuguese and Spanish (Portunhol) I can speak Portuguese Creole (mix of Portuguese and a Native Language of the former Portuguese African colonies). In Uruguay they speak Portuñol, They call it the Uruguayan Portuguese. It is a recognized language locally. I can understand the Brazilian Portuguese slang even from the rural areas (sertanejo and Tupi)... Anyway, Try to be a better listener and you will understand your fellow Portuguese. @@carlferreira6905 I am a musician, a good guitarist with excellent hearing. I lived in China and studied Chinese, which despite the maddening tones I can understand. Last April while in Braga I often had to ask people to slow down and repeat. Here in Asia we have the Portuguese International TV channel. I do understand 90% which is as much as I understand Spanish or Italian. It's a frustrating feeling to miss out 10% of your mother language.

7yrs ago I looked into relocating to Porto, Portugal…. A few years later I changed my mind and in recent months it’s become a possibility again. I retired early (2 1/2yrs ago) and after watching this video I’m ready!!

I’m português and he says a lot of things amazing about the country . You just need to be smart there. The hospital was that was different from were I Live . I had no Insurance took my 3 month baby to the hospital and stay 3 hours , paid 135€ Plus medication . My friends son broke his leg and paid 1500€ For 3 days . It’s good to have insurance . But still love Portugal .
I broke my ankle here in the USA, I have e insurance and still had to pay 3,000 plus the stuff they don't cover. The full bill without insurance was 40,000.

I have to laugh at you talking about the Portuguese language! I’m retired in Greece and I’m still struggling with some of the same differences. Greek also has gender ( a table is masculine but a chair is feminine). I find the grammar to be the most difficult. Yet, even with my rotten grammar, I can make myself understood and the Greek people are so happy when foreigners try. I’ve had shopkeepers throw their arms around me and we both laughed together! Greeks are very proud to tell me how difficult their language is. Ah, Americans don’t understand how much living abroad is an education, a very rich education. Perhaps if more Americans tried living in other countries, they might have more tolerance for the immigrants & refugees who go there for a better way of life.
First of all, this is NOT A KNOCK on Portugal but...........1) ALMOST anyplace is better than California in regards to air pollution, cost of living, taxes, rude people, not being able to get out of an ER in under 7 hours, crime, etc, etc, etc. 2) I have work provided health insurance and have have long conversations with Drs. and have been in and out of ER's in under an hour. 3) As mentioned, cost of living in California is very, very, very high. I bet there are thousands of countries that have lower costs of living then California. 4) Traffic is very bad in California. 5) Was anyone here at all surprised when he was asked where he was from in the US, when he answered "California"? They are losing people every year because it is a cesspool. And a lot of countries are hating Californians when they move to other countries cause they are driving up the costs for the locals and making it where the locals can no longer afford to live in the area, in their own country, because of Californians. Trust me, foreign people, I truly understand. Ex-Californians are Effing up a lot of states in the US, too, when they move out of California.

It was, perhaps, long time ago. Now, that phrase is only cliche. People are more oriented about quality of living, not quantity. Our life in the US is on fast pace, not much of freedom, no free time, limited vacation time, expensive healthcare, education, etc… All flags are up that indicates we are not the greatest or the best country in the world anymore.

It’s so misleading the way he says “it’s not like that in the USA” as if California and Colorado are the USA. I live in a small town in the USA not far from the beach, cost of living is great, I can chit chat with my doctor for more than 15 minutes and the food is greater than Portugal. Lots of nice people in USA at least where I live. No traffic at ALL times, gulf breezes and I love it. USA is a huge country and no need to move to somewhere just because the USA large cities are not for you. Insane logic but to each their own. 🤦🏻♀️ But hey USA folks go on and move to Europe so it’s less crowded in Cali and Colorado LOL

I am Scottish but was recruited to the USA in the early nineties. I’ve been to Portugal more than a few times prior to it joining EEC and me coming to the US. More recently, was there about 10 years ago in a rented villa with my Scots relatives, including, mum & sister. After joining the EEC costs certainly went up, however, last time I was there it was certainly very reasonable versus the US and Scotland (UK). Whilst, we got a direct flight from NYC to Lisbon and then short hop to the coast ( should have driven 1.5- wars max). That said, I’d retire to Portugal in a minute. Now let me start working on the wife........
Glad he is happy but investing in rental properties in Portugal is not a sound business decision.Portugal' s laws don't protect property rights and contracts.Courts protect tenant's rights almost exclusively and it's impossible to evict for non payment of rent or any other reason.Can take decades to resolve and when it does , it's always to the detriment of the landlord.I know of cases where apartments were rented and tenants stopped paying even thought they were professionally employed.After 20 years the landlord had to pay a large sum to the tenant so he could move out.This after living in the apartment for free for 20 years.Many people with extra apartments in Portugal don't rent due to this specific reason.Too risky.
I don't agree at all with you!! The tenants that rented properties 20 or more years ago, yes I agree. They paid almost nothing for rent and it would be a nightmare to evict them. In recent years, things have changed and with a registered rental contract, you can give them notice and get them out if they stop paying.

I don’t know how is in California but I was living for 35 yrs in Farmington, CT and never felt unsafe. I left my house unlock and left for vacation to Cape Cod for week and nothing happened. He said that he had beautiful house in expensive neighborhood and someone took his bike that is big crime 😄. In Poland if someone will take your car there won’t be punishment as long that person will say that needed to use your car🤭😂. In Spain people can move to your house while you away and you can’t make those people to move out😂.

I left NZ for Europe already last year July, and I couldn’t be happier to be back in Europe. 😮💨 just returned from a 2 week trip around Italy from Pompeii to Portofino 🇮🇹 (Many years ago, I rented a gorgeous 17th century old villa near Pisa/Lucca), Europe is unsurpassed when it comes to Art & Culture… it is wonderful to be able to travel with such ease from country to country. And : oops 🙊 my bad, it was a written mistake, I meant 50 not 500. but those are still 50 gangs too many. My partner is still in NZ, joining me by the end of this year, he also can’t wait to get out of there. Friends of mine also managed to call it quits in NZ, going back home, relieved to leave this place behind again. They bought a huge 6 bedroom house with pool & a large garden etc. and comparing what they spent, it’s by far cheaper and (of course) much better value then their run down, drafty & mouldy house with adjacent shop they had been renting out in the woods next to a state highway a couple of hours out of Auckland 😂. We all had businesses in NZ, struggling for years to make it happen. As many others, we finally gave up. So many more options here & high quality of life for far less money.

I've been all over Europe, am 68 and travelled by rail, staying at hostels. Portugal is a beautiful Country with well-educated, multi lingual people. Porto is my choice. Beautiful City. River running through it. Great bike paths. Wineries close by. there's a soft spot for Portugal in my heart.

The biggest single barrier for expats is always the same, speaking the language. I've lived in Italy for +20 years, am fully integrated with NO expat friends. Agree with John's analysis 100% and for me Portugal is up there in Europe.

We were beginning a residency visa in Portugal when everything went down in 2019-2020. Since we couldn't travel, the Visa was cancelled. I still in my heart want so much to begin this again. II too am from California. I spent December & January in Portugal and absolutely fell in love with her. My fear is that short sighted people travel to special places such as lovely Lisbon and then complain that the food they like or customs they prefer are missing. Yet this uniqueness is precisely what makes Portugal so wonderful and inviting. Simply can’t wait to return and enjoy more of this beautiful country.

Having lived in Spain (Cantabria) and traveled throughout all Europe...indeed, Algarve was my favorite for all the reasons mentioned here. The issue is residency. Not all people bring loads of cash. Since a non EU person can only stay 90 days for every 180 days (if I recall correctly). I have met people who stay as nearly permanent residents and have no problems ongoing daily. I have never heard of a US person being deported for staying too long....
Long term visas are available if people have income from outside Portugal. D7 visa for example.
Spent 40 years in North America, presently In Mississauga Toronto. On 4th May, it’s still cold. Sick and tired of 8 months of cold weather, very soon I be heading that part of the world.
We are in Illinois, and I can tell ya we have only 3 months of liveable weather. Rest of year is yuck weather.

Sintra has Pena Palace and Regaleira, both spectacular, and the “Moorish” castle, which is a reconstruction from the 19th century but very well done. They’re all worth seeing.
Yeah but he was thinking of museums I guess, and there’s really something Portugal lacks of compared to other countries. Once I was told that most of art work of Portugal were located in Lisbon expensive palaces and all of them were destroyed in 1756 earthquake, and after that Portugal had to rebuild its capital instead spend money in noble things and Portugal faced a strong of problems that culminated in the end of monarchy and a long debated of dictatorship. Actually the place with the most valuable art of Portugal is quite recently constituted and belongs to a Berardo, thanks to money he spent in art word we can say Lisbon has a meaningful museum (in terms of international value of art words). But it’s only one, there other are more inventive museums but without worldwide well known art work. Only one is nothing if you compre to other capital cities like London, Paris or as he mentioned Rome (or even Madrid and Berlin). But I guess he will get kinda surprised when he gets to Lisbon and see himself surround for thousand of years of history, even though Lisbon lacks more meaningful museums (or museums of a world) it’s shows off big history all around. However we must understand that what he knows of Lisbon so far is Algarve and Algarve is not the most history place in Portugal, it’s more a beach paradise tourism oriented

My husband and I recently moved to Tennessee from California and it is beautiful here it cost us last healthcare is wonderful gas is cheaper groceries are cheaper and we are retired so we are giving to the state not taking away from the state and it is green year round we have more water than we need we don’t even have a irrigation system because we get enough rain here.

I found him to be a bit pretensious.Executive job, made good money in the US , lived in expensive neighborhoods , has good pensions ( 401 k etc) but has to leave the US in his retirement .I wonder if it was due to politics because he mentions a certain President whom i think he despised.Is he happy with current puppet president in the White House? ED story was another one.His gf had a finger injury , he takes her to ED , the doctor stitched it up and voila , thousands of dollars.He didn't say if she had surgery .Did she not have insurance? Did she pay? Healthcare in Portugal is not that great They have made tremendous gains since joining EU but long wait list of 2 years or more for life saving surgeries is all too common.

Wow, people from states, England and other countries are moving to Portugal because cost of living is cheap but they don’t get it that is only cheap for them because they made their money in their countries. They don’t care about Portuguese people who are making 800eu /month. There are so many Portuguese people who are leaving Portugal to other countries to make more money. He bought 4 apartment with cash that is why prices went up so much and Portuguese people can’t afford to buy house.
Wow; this guy is probably one of the most levelheaded and reasonable guy I've seen, and I agree with basically everything he said. Good Mexican food is hard to come by in Portugal! The only things I have qualms about is how he mispronounced _kilometres_ and how he thinks Portuguese is hard to learn.

Just one thing...in Portugal we use to speak...imagine...portuguese. So, perhaps a different approach about the language (as to learn some portuguese like other people does), and a better attitude about embracing the local culture i believe it will have better results.

I am Portuguese and I live in the UK for 36 years I am on my retirement, I want to go back ,but my partner doesn't want to being from Northern Ireland and very attached to the fish and chips,and potatoes and cabbage culture so I am in this dilemma..I find the UK at present very americanised and not very safe and a bit lawless that's why I want to move back there

Superbly made video with an excellent case study
I decided to move to Braga because is cheaper to live for one person than Porto. I have been several videos and Braga looks only 40 minutes to Spain where has family a lot close friends. Wanted ti buy 2/2 apartment or maybe small house after 2 or 3 years living there. Now, I am going to retiree and try to get a different place than USA (Miami,) is really expensive this days.
The best way to learn a language in every country is to talk or relate with people from that country, very simple 😉
If I can find a small apartment house around $100-150k
I can afford to live off 3k a month off my pension. 58 yrs old. Still surfing 🏄♂️ use to cold northern California water.

John try to learn Portuguese with the locals if you speak Spanish and/or French you have a leg up in learning the language. If it is any consolation, The Portuguese Language is very hard even for the natives. My advice to you, John, do not worry about the correct tenses of the verbs say for example You want to buy a car or anything... Eu quero comprar um carro (I want to buy a car/house/apart/etc) Just say (pointing to your chest) "Eu comprar carro" (anybody will understand you...) lol... Then the right conjugation of the verb will come with dealing with people. At least try to say a word or two in Portuguese and the locals will help you.
Most of the Portuguese courses online are from Brazil which has a different accent and ways of saying things (Like the American and British English).

The best way is to stop thinking in English and focus in the language you are learning (hard to do but you can do it).
I was born in Funchal, Madeira island (Portugal) and it is a touristic place. When I was a child, many foreigners visited Madeira and we also had neighbours from UK, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Australia, Venezuela, etc. and they would ask us, kids, how to say this or that in Portuguese. (sometimes we got a foreigner coin. lol). They also tried to make conversation with the adults...
Remember John, Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. You have to try to learn it and not expect them to accommodate you in your mother-tongue. All the immigrants have to learn English once they are in North American. All services are in English and not the language which they learned when they were born.
Many years ago, while in High School, I was a touristic guide In Madeira and we had to know Portuguese, English, French, German and Swedish even the bus drivers had to speak English and one or more other languages. Times have changed and Most services are done in English which is the official language of the E.U..
Most young people speak English (sometimes they do not want to bother with you!!! hahahaha like my nieces and nephews who started to learn since they are little kids).
My Canadian born kids visit Portugal and they have no issues communicating in English.
My son download an app to his iPad so he could speak with his grandmother. He speaks to it in English and it translates into Portuguese and vice versa. In Canada, I had foreigners doing the same since I worked at a front desk in my later years...

Portugal's Portuguese is almost impossible for foreigners to learn. It's time stressed like British English with a Cockney like pronunciation. I'm a native speaker, also a Portuguese citizen, sometimes I have no freaking idea what people are saying. It's frustrating.
I live in California. I am learning Spanish now because I want to. I plan to learn French and Portuguese also. However in the US many Hispanic people won't learn English they accommodate all Spanish speakers here. Some have been here 40 plus years and some are young people born here but don't speak English. I know it's difficult learning a new language but like I heard someone say keep at it.

You are right to learn a new language at least dedicate some time of your day to learn your lesson.
I think the best way is to start reading kids books Like the ABC's... Once you master that you go to the next level... Baby steps.
I speak several languages and for me, learning a new language comes natural to me.
My maternal grandfather was an American citizen and he spoke Portuglish (mix of Portuguese and English). He could speak English fluently but when he returned
he could barely speak Portuguese. He used to teach English words and I took interest in learning the language.
Portuguese is not an easy language to learn even for the natives.
I studied hard to have high marks in school so I did not have to go through exams in High School.
I had a Portuguese teacher that inspired me to like the language but frankly it was not my cup of tea. He taught us Latin and Portuguese (yes, at that time they taught Latin!). Once you learn the roots it is much easier to learn at upper levels.
My advice is to start small... Learn the basics and after you can learn the difficult levels of the language.
If you learn Spanish it is a leg up to learn Portuguese. Even though they are two distinct languages but they have similarities.

Braulio, I think your problem is not understanding the language but listening. Listening is an art.
It is like listening to music... If you know how to listen you enjoy the music but most people can't understand music.
I learned British English (Oxford) and when I came to Canada, It sounded a total different language and as the years progressed, people can't speak English anymore (too many foreigners)...
In Portugal, depending of the region, people speak in different accents that sometimes is hard to understand. Some people in the North of Portugal speak Mirandese Language (an Asturleonese Language) and people close to the borders of Spain also speak a mix of Portuguese and Spanish (Portunhol)
I can speak Portuguese Creole (mix of Portuguese and a Native Language of the former Portuguese African colonies).
In Uruguay they speak Portuñol, They call it the Uruguayan Portuguese. It is a recognized language locally.
I can understand the Brazilian Portuguese slang even from the rural areas (sertanejo and Tupi)...
Anyway, Try to be a better listener and you will understand your fellow Portuguese. It is not easy but you can try.

@@carlferreira6905 I am a musician, a good guitarist with excellent hearing. I lived in China and studied Chinese, which despite the maddening tones I can understand. Last April while in Braga I often had to ask people to slow down and repeat. Here in Asia we have the Portuguese International TV channel. I do understand 90% which is as much as I understand Spanish or Italian. It's a frustrating feeling to miss out 10% of your mother language.

I had no Insurance took my 3 month baby to the hospital and stay 3 hours , paid 135€ Plus medication . My friends son broke his leg and paid 1500€ For 3 days . It’s good to have insurance . But still love Portugal .
I broke my ankle here in the USA, I have e insurance and still had to pay 3,000 plus the stuff they don't cover. The full bill without insurance was 40,000.
Maybe it was a private hospital. I do not know if public hospital is so costly.

I have to laugh at you talking about the Portuguese language! I’m retired in Greece and I’m still struggling with some of the same differences. Greek also has gender ( a table is masculine but a chair is feminine). I find the grammar to be the most difficult. Yet, even with my rotten grammar, I can make myself understood and the Greek people are so happy when foreigners try. I’ve had shopkeepers throw their arms around me and we both laughed together! Greeks are very proud to tell me how difficult their language is. Ah, Americans don’t understand how much living abroad is an education, a very rich education. Perhaps if more Americans tried living in other countries, they might have more tolerance for the immigrants & refugees who go there for a better way of life.

First of all, this is NOT A KNOCK on Portugal but...........1) ALMOST anyplace is better than California in regards to air pollution, cost of living, taxes, rude people, not being able to get out of an ER in under 7 hours, crime, etc, etc, etc. 2) I have work provided health insurance and have have long conversations with Drs. and have been in and out of ER's in under an hour. 3) As mentioned, cost of living in California is very, very, very high. I bet there are thousands of countries that have lower costs of living then California. 4) Traffic is very bad in California. 5) Was anyone here at all surprised when he was asked where he was from in the US, when he answered "California"? They are losing people every year because it is a cesspool. And a lot of countries are hating Californians when they move to other countries cause they are driving up the costs for the locals and making it where the locals can no longer afford to live in the area, in their own country, because of Californians. Trust me, foreign people, I truly understand. Ex-Californians are Effing up a lot of states in the US, too, when they move out of California.

It was, perhaps, long time ago. Now, that phrase is only cliche. People are more oriented about quality of living, not quantity. Our life in the US is on fast pace, not much of freedom, no free time, limited vacation time, expensive healthcare, education, etc…
All flags are up that indicates we are not the greatest or the best country in the world anymore.

It’s so misleading the way he says “it’s not like that in the USA” as if California and Colorado are the USA. I live in a small town in the USA not far from the beach, cost of living is great, I can chit chat with my doctor for more than 15 minutes and the food is greater than Portugal. Lots of nice people in USA at least where I live. No traffic at ALL times, gulf breezes and I love it. USA is a huge country and no need to move to somewhere just because the USA large cities are not for you. Insane logic but to each their own. 🤦🏻♀️ But hey USA folks go on and move to Europe so it’s less crowded in Cali and Colorado LOL

There is no citizenship by investment in Portugal. There is a golden visa to obtain residency. But you still have to wait 5 years to apply for citizenship and pass an A2 level language exam to be approved.

I am Scottish but was recruited to the USA in the early nineties. I’ve been to Portugal more than a few times prior to it joining EEC and me coming to the US. More recently, was there about 10 years ago in a rented villa with my Scots relatives, including, mum & sister. After joining the EEC costs certainly went up, however, last time I was there it was certainly very reasonable versus the US and Scotland (UK). Whilst, we got a direct flight from NYC to Lisbon and then short hop to the coast ( should have driven 1.5- wars max). That said, I’d retire to Portugal in a minute. Now let me start working on the wife........

Glad he is happy but investing in rental properties in Portugal is not a sound business decision.Portugal' s laws don't protect property rights and contracts.Courts protect tenant's rights almost exclusively and it's impossible to evict for non payment of rent or any other reason.Can take decades to resolve and when it does , it's always to the detriment of the landlord.I know of cases where apartments were rented and tenants stopped paying even thought they were professionally employed.After 20 years the landlord had to pay a large sum to the tenant so he could move out.This after living in the apartment for free for 20 years.Many people with extra apartments in Portugal don't rent due to this specific reason.Too risky.
I don't agree at all with you!! The tenants that rented properties 20 or more years ago, yes I agree. They paid almost nothing for rent and it would be a nightmare to evict them. In recent years, things have changed and with a registered rental contract, you can give them notice and get them out if they stop paying.
You rent apartment to Vrbo, Airbnb, etc…. on daily bases, more money, no problems with eviction, etc…

I don’t know how is in California but I was living for 35 yrs in Farmington, CT and never felt unsafe. I left my house unlock and left for vacation to Cape Cod for week and nothing happened. He said that he had beautiful house in expensive neighborhood and someone took his bike that is big crime 😄.
In Poland if someone will take your car there won’t be punishment as long that person will say that needed to use your car🤭😂. In Spain people can move to your house while you away and you can’t make those people to move out😂.

I left NZ for Europe already last year July, and I couldn’t be happier to be back in Europe. 😮💨 just returned from a 2 week trip around Italy from Pompeii to Portofino 🇮🇹 (Many years ago, I rented a gorgeous 17th century old villa near Pisa/Lucca), Europe is unsurpassed when it comes to Art & Culture… it is wonderful to be able to travel with such ease from country to country. And : oops 🙊 my bad, it was a written mistake, I meant 50 not 500. but those are still 50 gangs too many. My partner is still in NZ, joining me by the end of this year, he also can’t wait to get out of there. Friends of mine also managed to call it quits in NZ, going back home, relieved to leave this place behind again. They bought a huge 6 bedroom house with pool & a large garden etc. and comparing what they spent, it’s by far cheaper and (of course) much better value then their run down, drafty & mouldy house with adjacent shop they had been renting out in the woods next to a state highway a couple of hours out of Auckland 😂. We all had businesses in NZ, struggling for years to make it happen. As many others, we finally gave up. So many more options here & high quality of life for far less money.
