  • Many people are seeking out the perfect place to retire and every year Portugal comes in as a Top Location. In this video, we discuss some of the key reasons Portugal is rated as a top location for retiring or moving to. We will also go over with you the different options for Visas you will have if you decide to call Portugal home. We cover some of the top choices, the Golden visa, D2 visa, D7 visa, and the Schengen visa.
    #portugal #retireearly #digitalnomads
We've visited Porto and Lisbon and have now been living in the Algarve region for the past two months. Would we choose Portugal as our retirement destination now after being here for a while? Maybe extending the Schengen visa is a better option? We hope the info we share helps you discover if Portugal is the right decision for a place to retire or settle down and call home.
    Cheers 🍻

Have you ever thought of retiring to Portugal? Each year it ranks near the top of the list of the best places to move or retire to. What are the things about Portugal that interest you the most?

We retired to the Algarve in Portugal last year, and love it! The NHR scheme was changed to 10% from 0% by the way, but keep in mind you file Portugal taxes first then U.S. taxes and you deduct the taxes you paid in Portugal from U.S. taxes owed due to the tax treaty between the countries that prevents double-taxation.

@@BrianandCarrie we moved a good few years ago and I believe it was an investor style visa. Education is good and mandatory to the age of 16. If you rent its about the same costs (we bought outright). Crime is low. Health care is good although your visa type will determine costs. I'd need to actually look into from your guys perspective (based on your video). Andorra I'd a rather unique country in terms of how things are run from a "government" perspective. I think if you did an independent analysis for Andorra as you have done here you may change your minds about Portugal. Cost of living is overall rather cheap and the avergae median salaries are higher than most of Europe. Family have been here for decades so it's hard to do a like for like given circumstances. Honestly believe you would be seriously temped to move to Andorra. Would love to here your thoughts after you do your own research

Great video! Thanks for doing the research in putting this together. I’m in the process of getting Portuguese citizenship, but I’m doing it the “old fashioned way” - all four of my grandparents were born in Portugal so I’m using them as my means of becoming a citizen. This way I don’t have to worry about the 90 day Schengen limitation. Should get my citizenship in about six months. Many steps to go through, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Thank you for another great video. It has been interesting to see your transition to more “how to” videos in addition to travel focus. Glad you will do a cost video here soon, as it is a good verification of Numbeo’s numbers. Curious if you will include your desired yearly budget for travel in an upcoming video? Another You Tube couple planned on $43’000 USD a year for full time travel. Finally, you ended with you wouldn’t retire in Portugal, but would welcome 4-6 months. I assume that is due to the elevated prices in summer for housing. Cheers

Hi John. Thank you, we will continue to do the Thursday "how-to" videos as long as we have the relevant material that we think viewers may be interested in. Otherwise, they may be occasional. We don't want to just add videos for the sake of adding videos. They have to serve some kind of purpose. We will be doing a year-end video in September on our one-year travel anniversary. As far as retiring in Portugal, we would but have decided to keep moving for the next several years. Nothing against Portugal, just not looking to stop moving anytime soon. We didn't explain that as well as we should have. Thanks for watching and supporting us. Keep the questions coming!!

The burger for 5 euros was various years ago, now its 12 euros upwards. Portugal right now one of the most expensive countries in Europe, specially in rents so the video is very accurate, except those parts, but Golden Visas are starting to be extinguished and also we have the 3rd most expensive rents in Europe. I don´t think Spain allows you to extend your 90-days visa over a 180 days period, so if that´s the case for Portugal, it´s a huge advantage for them.

@@BrianandCarrie my husband and I are debating between Lisbon and Valencia. The only reason we are leaning more toward Valencia is because I’m a big beach/water person and I paddle board and swim a lot and the water is much warmer in Valencia. I also like the flatness of the city for walking and bike riding. But Lisbon is perfect for all of the other reasons. Difficult decision!

I and a few friends are planning a 3-wk trip to Portugal in September to explore some cities for future D7 or county-hopping like you two. Is Algarve too hot to be pleasant for you folks right now?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  2 роки тому +2

We have not been to Ericeira. Three years ago, out of Lisbon, we made it as far north as Sintra and Cascais, worth visiting however Sintra would just be a day trip. You would need a car in that area, the train from Lisbon doesn't go past Cascais and we took a bus to Sintra. We really enjoyed Porto and the weather that time of year is still nice a warm although it does get cool and wet in the winter months. The weather now in the Algarve is about 80, perfect, and will be in the low 60 in the winter, from what we've been told anyway. Hopefully, this helps!

I have done a lot of research on all the options towards the residency in Portugal and what you mentioned in the video is 100% in line with what i have learned. The D7 visa is the cheapest and easiest option towards that goal for those that don't have to work, and have passive income (mainly retirees and those that have income from investment / savings). The nice thing about the D7 is it is a low cost entry visa (Plus the 10 year NHR tax holiday) and will still allow you to buy property in banned areas for Golden visa applicants. My idea of a D7 is to have a permanent home in Portugal (may be buy a T1 without throwing too much money) and use that as a home base to travel around Europe and see places. Have a Portugal trip planned for fall of this year to convince my better half of the Portugal option. My daughter will be with her friends in Porto next week for a 1 week trip and hope she will back me up on my plans. BTW do you guys plan to visit Lisbon / Porto in this current 90 day Schengen routine?. My preference is leaning towards Porto for the simple reason being easy connectivity for travel to other parts of Europe, and somewhat cheaper than Lisbon. Have a great time and Thanks for the Great video loaded with info. Cheers.

Hi Guys, so is this article in the BBC May 2023 not true on topic of renting an apartment "Average rent in Lisbon is now just over €2,000, while the minimum wage is about €760. Portugal is currently grappling with a severe housing crisis, triggered by an increase in foreign investment in property and a lack of affordable new homes. As part of a new programme for housing, the government is putting a stop to Golden Visas and short-term rentals permits, as well as limiting rent increases to 2%. This aside such videos are a great help for many so thank you for making and taking the time. I am indeed lucky being German living in EU making retirement in another EU country easier and Greece followed by Portugal would have been my top 2 in EU but my own number 1 is Cambodia. Rock on take care and enjoy where ever you are.

Hi! We've heard of some of the many changes and challenges taking place in Portugal with housing. It's so unfortunate, but understandable when they are ranked for many years as one of the top places to live, people begin to flock there. Hopefully some of the new rules put in place will help bring costs under control as that is just out of reach for those living there and trying to live within the minimum wage. We can't wait to visit Cambodia next year as we've only heard wonderful things. Thanks so much for watching!! Cheers 🍻

You won't have any trouble finding English-speaking physicians and other healthcare-related professionals. Among the younger generations (younger than, say, 55) virtually all healthcare professionals understand and speak at least a modicum of English. Many are proficient, if not fluent. Remember: as healthcare professionals we have to regularly publish research on peer-reviewed publications, and those are mostly in English (or else, we won't be able to climb the career ladder). When in doubt, just ask. They will tell you whether they understand you or not. Concerning Brian's dentist: in Portugal, we have many dentists from countries like Brazil, a place where English is not as pervasive as in Portugal. Still, most of them speak English.

Then at 1:50 you’re talking rent at $500/1500.(again per month) What’s NOT clear is if that rental amount is in addition to cost of living? The reason that I query this is that in the video “Cost of living Portugal (Algarve) 2022, is it affordable?” your rent for the two months were $1076/$1380 and at the end of the video the grand total was $4310 for two months INCLUDING rent. Portugal has become too expensive to live in. It certainly has pros and it is on my list, but the idea of retiring in Portugal has started to fade. My own dream is to retire in Greece as I lived in Athens, Greece back in the 80s and have been returning ever since. I have lived in Portugal too, but the Greek lifestyle is way better for me.

    • @BrianandCarrie

The Greek lifestyle is amazing. We spent a month in Santorini in March and really enjoyed ourselves. I think what makes Portugal so appealing to many is the climate, location, and the fact that Portugal has made it relatively easy to get a residency. You can't really argue that the Greek lifestyle is one of the best. Thank you for commenting and for watching our channel!!

@@BrianandCarrie The location is definitely one of the advantages of Portugal. It is surrounded by two of the biggest Shengen countries, Spain and France, and this makes the ride/drive to the rest of the EU uninterrupted and a lot easier. Thank you, the content in your videos is wonderful.

I was robbed and attacked by the person I rented from in the Algarve. The police do not care. Only use internationally known RE agents: Engel & Völkers, Long and Foster, ReMax, Coldwell Bankers International, etc. I've heard of other foreigners having similar issues.

Hi just came across this one year old video.
You guys are too young to be retired?!?!
You guys won lottery or what?! lol
Anywho, I guess while a year ago cost of living was $1500/m and rent varied from $500 to $1500...I should say it is NOT a cheap place to retire since the average Social Security is $2000/m.
Let's find way cheaper location ..
All the best for you guys living Europe.
    Cheers!

Thanks so much for watching! Yes, in a year things have certainly changed. But, Portugal is still a great option for those looking for a wonderful place to retire on a budget. There are definitely less expensive places, SE Asia would be another great affordable option. Cheers 🍻

Whenever a country is being pumped online it’s usually a sign of a market top and incoming decline. Since Portugal is in this list I guarantee you it’s not worth retiring to at the moment. I’ll check back later when the story reverses in the next decade or so when everyone tells you to stay away from Portugal.

@@BrianandCarrie Thank you for sharing, but it looks like Portugal is in a bubble right now. I don’t like living in bubbly areas pumped by foreigners for the last 3-4 years nonstop. Same thing happened in Ecuador, they pumped it for so long, now everyone is leaving because life got so ridiculous.
