  • Quake II is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and distributed by Activision. It is not a direct sequel to Quake; it merely uses the name of the former game due to id's difficulties in coming up with alternative names. The soundtrack for Quake II was mainly provided by Sonic Mayhem, with some additional tracks by Bill Brown and one track Jer Sypult.
The next game released with the title Quake III Arena, is not considered to be related to Quake or Quake II as it is multiplayer focused, and has a dissimilar storyline. A direct sequel, titled Quake 4, was released for the PC (Microsoft Windows and Linux), and later for the Xbox 360 and the Macintosh. A prequel to Quake II, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, has been produced by Splash Damage.

I'd love to see more games like Quake II released. The pacing, level design and deployment of enemies was just right, you could get such a good flow going in that game. Even the 'ghost town' thing didn't bother me, it meant I could look around and admire the level design !

I feel like I am the only one who prefers Quake 2 over Quake 1. Don't get me wrong, they are both fantastic games worth playing today, but there's just something about Quake 2 that makes me prefer playing that over the original. With Quake 1, I get the sense of being in a environment which should feel like a horror game, especially with the eerie soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor, but instead I'm running around blasting things and not really looking at everything because I don't really have the time because I am going at it in a fast pace. With Quake 2, everything just fits perfectly for me! Even though I still don't have time to look at everything, I still can feel the action feeling that I am supposed to get from the game, and I guess that's due to the soundtrack. The soundtrack makes me feel like the game is telling me to just blow away anything that moves to get to the Makron and destroy the Strogg threat. All in all, I guess it's really due to the fitting soundtrack that makes me prefer Quake 2 over Quake 1. Quake 1 may have a great style with the Lovecraftian-style monsters and eerie atmosphere, but I get more satisfaction from killing the Strogg in the sci-fi military style bases in Quake 2.

I'm one of "those guys" who, oddly enough, prefer Quake 2 over Quake 1. I think it is mainly because of the way objective are in Quake 2. I have a mission to complete. Where in Quake 1 it really does feel like 'just another level' all the time. Said levels are great thought, yet there is a special something about Quake 2. Maybe the more sci-fi oriented theme appeals to me more. Or maybe I just prefer to explore less confusing environments. Who knows...
But both games are great in its own right.

Action Quake 2! Love the call out. I was on the team that made it.
At the time, when Quake 2 came out, it had 3D accelerator support out of the box, coloured lighting, transparent surfaces, and generally better texture fidelity. I can see how, 20 years after it released, it doesn't look much different than Quake 1; at the time though. Quake 1 released on DOS with a software renderer that most people ran at 320x200 ~ 512x384. Compare that to Quake 2, running on a 3DFX Voodoo or Voodoo 2 at 512x384 ~ 640x480 in Windows 98. Voodoo 2 in SLI at 800x600. The difference was massive in 1997. Quake 2 also had a cohesive, albeit silly, story with matching level design. In reality Quake 2 was meant to be a different IP, separate from Quake, but id just couldn't come up with a name. That doesn't even touch on the netcode, which was amazing in Quake 2.
Quake was a mess in terms of theme; I love the level design, and still play it with Darkplaces or Quakespasm, and all sorts of HD textures and models. That said, there was no cohesion to it. You could tell that Romero was at odds with the rest of id during the design of the game. Still great fun to play.
I just recently subbed to your channel, really enjoying your content. Couldn't resist posting here, 3.5 years late to the party; I was really active in gaming from 1994 to 2001, worked on a lot of mods, and apparently can't resist tossing in my $0.02.

My personal theory about Quake 2 is that the Strogg and Stroggos came from the opening levels of Quake's different episodes. Basically, after the death of Shub-Niggurath and her lieutenants and the disapperance of Ranger (aka his abduction into the Arena Eternal), the remaining cyborg slaves of the Witch would begin processing any non-slaves on-site into what we would come to know as the Strogg with the general who tasked Ranger with killing Shub-Niggurath becoming the first Makron. This would explain why the palace of the Makron would carry the symbol of Shub Niggurath and how the symbol we see in Quake would be carried over with slight modifications as the symbol of the Strogg.

For me, Quake II was more of a sequel to Quake's gameplay and graphics rather than its story. It was also sort of a sequel to Doom+Doom II's gameplay, with the inclusion of the super shotgun and the BFG. I was certainly disappointed back in the day that Quake II wouldn't continue Quake's story, but the way it expanded upon Quake's gameplay, graphics, and level design excited me. I liked mission objectives, the music some of the level design, the unique enemies, the early use of scripted sequences, the enemy and weapon variety, and the CG/live action cutscene at the end. The variety of weapons and enemies kind of reminded me of System Shock's. Besides all that, I do prefer the original Quake over it's sequel, but I still appreciate what Quake II was able to accomplish. Because Quake II took the series into a new direction, I kept expecting the sequels would do the same. For instance, each Quake installment would have similar gameplay, but tackle a different theme with a different story. But since Quake IV, I'd just want Quake V to continue Quake 1's story. Sometimes, I additionally imagine a Quake II mod with Quake's story, weapons, and enemies, but with a combination of Q1+2's level design.

Quake 2 is the pinnacle of the FPS genre before the Half Life effect and games shifting into mainstream and needing to have a ton of elements for a generation with ADD. Everyone gave Doom 2016 a lot of credit for restoring a lot of classic FPS elements, but it's still light years away from where Quake 2 is.

I miss the times where I would have to wait for a free slot in the aussie Action Quake 2 servers. The best thing to come out of Quake 2 was the multiplayer mods. The engine had awesome physics for multiplayer.. the speed you could get from strafe jumping, the height you could get from ramp and box jumping. Nothing compares.

You forgot one important aspect - Quaek 2 had awesome looking 3D weapons with cool animations in a time when most FPS games were still sticking to 2D meshes for weapons and enemies. When Quake 2 came out i didn't have a PC so i played it exclusively at i-cafes and i only experienced the LAN multiplayer. Lots of fun was had jumping off ledges and shooting rockets in the heads of unsuspecting enemies and then hearing them scream obscenities from across the room. Ah, the good ol days of internet clubs...

It's strange how much the soundtrack can impact the feel of the game. Quake 2 is a prime example.
I struggled to push myself through my first run from the Steam version because of how vague of directions I was given as well as how *quiet* the game was. No joke, the game was unnerving at times as it felt like a weird old FPS horror game.
Then I later learned about the soundtrack--which I thought they had only ambient sound effects--and downloaded the Ultimate Quake 2 Patch. The patch alone made the game play almost like another game, and I found myself getting through the first four missions without a break.
I would probably say that it wasn't the soundtrack alone that fixed the game for me. Not only did the patch add the soundtrack but gave you better dialog prompts of what to do and what was locked.

I enjoyed your reviews of the Quake series but it left me thinking I should perhaps toss my own two cents in on this one.
While it was a fun game to play back in the day, what I recall Quake 2 mostly for these days is being resigned that it decided to drop any support for campaign co-op. There was still multiplayer deathmatch support (of course). This made the drop of any real single player campaign experiences in Quake 3 less surprising and somehow easier to deal with, for me at least, as they'd already streamlined design focus before at the expense of a gameplay mode from the prior title. Quake 1-3, despite being quite different, have a palpable sense of design continuity that goes beyond these individual differences of each title. This is more apparent by being the launch titles for three engine iterations to the point that it resulted in people nicknaming the engines after them. That legacy weapons from Doom or Quake 1 appear at all in Quake 2 and 3 also helped to reinforce a continuity of design tropes reaching back to Doom that one could come to expect from id software.
More to my main point though, I've come to consider that Quake 2 heralded an era from 1997 to 2001 where it was less common for an entry into the FPS genre to feature a co-op element. While it may not have long been a staple in the nascent genre, it was possible to play both Dooms and Quake 1 with a co-op mode and could be seen as part of the common stable of features offered by id-style shooting games up until Quake 2. It is true that some outliers to the trend exist, such as Unreal 1 which had full campaign co-op functionality on release in 1998, but outside such excellent exceptions, the feature didn't see much favour until the release of Halo seemed to highlight the idea once more.
Sometimes I wonder if it's just me or if it was a real statistical trend.

I love Quake 2, cause it's not a Doom 64 remastered, like Quake 1 was, it's now it's own game. And after playing Quake 4 i really started to dig in the both story lines from Quake 2 and 4, to see what's what, because i really like it. Also i played a lot of multiplayer back in the school with my friends, despite that they know how to play, and i'm not, cause i had Sega MD2 back then, and i was just learning how to play these games. But yeah, i managed to kick many asses in multiplayer. One of my friends even smashed the keyboard because i always killed him in multiplayer and he could not do anything about it, and because of that he has to pay for the keyboard, because it was not his keyboard, but the one in school. Ah.. such an amazing memories :)

No, No Q2 was massive technological improvement back then - hand/guns models, poly count, size of levels, animations, colored lighting. I like Q1 more, but Q2 was a giant leap - there is a reason HL and Daikatana switched engines after Q2! The bar has been risen.

  • @AimingAtYou

I played though Duke Nukem 3d using the JFDuke sourceport. It had a couple very, very minor graphical glitches, but I had no problem finishing the game. EDuke32 offers a more advanced renderer, but it also has major graphical glitches with various expansions. Plus, you have to make the game really dark for all the colored lighting tricks to really stand out and the glow around switches and some items makes them way too obvious.
The only expansion I finished was Duke it Out in DC, which I enjoyed. The Smithsonian level is probably one of my favorite levels from any game, just because of the variety it includes. Unfortunately, one of the graphical glitches mars the space exhibit (you can see some objects through the walls if you're not using the software renderer), but it's still a great level. Using the new, advanced renderer in eDuke32 makes a mess out of the same area, with entire rooms being visible through the walls. :(
