    Quake 4 is the fourth title in the series of Quake first-person shooter computer games. The game was developed by Raven Software and published by Activision. Raven Software collaborated with id Software, the creators and historical developers of preceding Quake games. In this case, id Software supervised the development of the game as well as providing the Doom 3 engine, now referred to as "id Tech 4" and released under the GNU General Public License on 22 November 2011, upon which it was built. Quake 4 went gold in early October 2005 and was released on 18 October 2005 for Microsoft Windows and later for Linux, Xbox 360 and Mac OS X. A special DVD Collectors Edition also exists, including promotional material and the game Quake II with its expansions, The Reckoning and Ground Zero. The Xbox 360 version of Quake 4 is based on the Special Collectors Edition, and therefore also includes Quake II. On 4 August 2011 the game was made available through Steam.
    Plotwise, the game is a sequel to Quake II and takes place during the same war as Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Quake II, Quake 4, or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars do not share story lines with Quake or Quake III Arena; their only relation is their names and logos. Compared to other titles in the Quake series, Quake 4 has an increased emphasis on the single-player portion of the game. A multiplayer mode is available, but it does not involve playable bots like Quake III Arena, without 3rd party modifications.

      You can actually read the Strogg language pretty easily if you concentrate a little bit. It's still English but with letters that have been changed or altered.

      After he mentions the Stroggification I looked back at that on-rail cutscene and just noticed that as well. Somewhere it says "... implanted" and is just readable after the chip is implanted.

      People were intoxinated by new wave of shooters, so-called "realistic" ones, and Quake 4 got flak, among other things, for one-man-army gameplay, simple enemy AI, and lack of iron sights or headshots.

    I love the look of these games from mid-2000s with high-contrast lighting. I've recently replayed FEAR and for a 10-year-old game, it looks fantastic. I'd even say that at times, it's visually more stunning than some of today's games, because the devs didn't just throw a bunch of particle effects and lens flares at the screen ("cough" Battlefield 4 "cough"), but used the possibilities of then advanced engines to build atmosphere and create unique images. Chaos Theory still looks better than Blacklist. Who gives a shit if it's not realistic, as long as it's beautiful.

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 8 років тому +9

      TOCS It is sad, but it was inevitable. With production budgets constantly getting higher, it's getting harder for games to be profitable on a single platform. You can even see this on consoles. The last 2 generations had a lot of exclusive titles, but now, almost 3 years after the launch, you can count the numbers of mid-sized and big exclusives on XB1 and PS4 on the fingers of two hands.

    • @DildoFagginsNL
      @DildoFagginsNL 5 років тому +12

      Yup. Back then you needed talented developers to create a beautiful game, nowadays every game looks "beautiful" but generic af... God rays and lens flares are nowadays what bloom was back in the day.. A cheap trick to make your actually shitty lightning/low detail textures look better.
      A game like FEAR 1 for example: the best AI till this date in a FPS.. Enemies push over cabinets, flank you, call for backup, fall back at moments... You really had to outsmart your foes, no waiting behind cover till they peak over cover and headshot them. No. #1 would surpress you, while the 2 others would flank you... From above, from the sides.. Whatever would give them the upper hand in a certain situation. Hell you could even hear them communicate about what to do. They dont make em anymore like that... True craftmanship.

      ABreathOfReason that is very true . You will notice that most games today in whatever genre have very poor AI compared to the past . The AI is what takes the most significant development time and is generally the most complex thing to program . It is what makes the world full of life and engrossing . Despite games having better and more realistic graphics these days they still seem bland , lifeless and boring and think that’s down to the atrocious AI . partly due to the fact that the good developers have just had enough and left this toxic Industry , which just cares about making shareholders happy and not about making good games ....

    It's my favorite Quake. I played the shit out of it with my grandpa in his basement next all his ham radio equipment. Gotta love those old games where they really pushed the hardware available at the time of release, so they compensated with cramped level design. We got lost so much our first couple of playthroughs that it was almost harder keep track of your location than fighting the actual enemies.

  • @gameragodzilla

    Oh God I fucking love Quake 4.
    One of the things that stuck out for me was the fact that Quake 4 has the best companions in any FPS I've played. The AI is quite good and I often rely on them to help me out in a fight, especially on higher difficulties, and the medics and technicians heal me WHEN I ASK FOR IT, which is a far cry from other games (like Bioshock Infinite) where the companion only heals me when they feel like it (I've died so many times in Infinite because Elizabeth wouldn't throw me a damn medkit when I needed it). Hell, they'll even come in and heal/patch up my armor on their own volition if I fall below a certain threshold, which is great.
    Funny enough, I actually enjoyed the vehicle sections. All right, the turret sections were a bit boring, but I actually found driving a tank and mech to be quite enjoyable. Not as good as FEAR 2's mech segment, but certainly fun nonetheless.
    I pretty much grew up with Raven and id, and it's damn good to know that other people feel the same way.
    As for why this game got mediocre reception, well, keep in mind that in 2005, modern FPS tropes were new and fresh, while old school shooters like this have been done many times. And due to suffering from a severe case of "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" people didn't realize the flaws of modern FPS until it was too late. I'm sure if you spread the word about Quake 4 nowadays, it'd hold up a lot better than a lot of modern FPS.

      I feel you, this game is amazing, I still play it once in while and I even enjoy it more now that my PC runs this game smoothly, back in the day I struggled to run this game with my old PC. I love the companions as well because I love to get into the action, face to face combat and thanks to the medics I can recover without having to search for health in every corner.
      As far as I can remember, the game had a mediocre reception because of the multiplayer mode which sucked so much and even more if you compared it with Quake III Arena, people was expecting more the multiplayer experience than the campaign one, which critics at the time totally forgot, seemed they didn't even played it. People went straight to the multiplayer mode and got disappointed, which honestly is not fair, the game is a masterpiece.

      Honestly, I think the opposite. I too prefer Quake 1 (but still love strogg) but Quake 2 was what was trying to avoid being a doom clone. Afterall, Quake and Doom share the same backstory: a military science facility discovered interdimensional travel and end up connecting our realm to a sinister messed up one that is hell bent (in Doom's case, literally) on consuming ours.
      Quake 2 on the other hand threw all that away in favor of an alien war.

Plus they are probably still pissing and moaning due to Doom 3 not being what they wanted. It's because of assholes like these that good games get very bad reps.

    • @AndyAKratz
      @AndyAKratz 7 років тому +7

      I am one who disliked it a lot. I did in fact hate it and you are probably correct for it being because it wasn't a lot like Quake 2. I'll admit that Q3A wasn't what I wanted or expected it to be, but I loved Q3A and could play more of it right now! Yes, Doom 3 to me wasn't really a Doom game in my eyes, either, but I LOVED Doom 3!
      Why did I hate Quake 4 so much!? Several reasons besides just not being a carbon copy of Quake 2. It wasn't even entirely that, but it was sometimes like the game gave me the impression that I was going to experience something I was familiar with at times... WRONG!!! Where was my power shield from Quake 2? I was dying way to easily in spots making it frustrating and if the power shield from Quake 2 was somewhere to be found to give me some protection, that would have been bad-ass! Why wasn't the weapon I picked up the weapon I thought it was? The nail-gun in Quake used to be powerful, especially the super nail-gun; this one I had to empty clips into enemies before it seemed to do anything! Wait... THIS ISN'T A RAIL-GUN!!! It doesn't pass thru enemies, it's taking multiple shots to do any damage worth talking about.. where's my rail-gun!? **Later on rendezvous with military guy** "Here, let me upgrade your weapon so it can shoot multiple targets." **Guy flips a frikkin' switch on the gun my guy apparently couldn't find** "There you go!" WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F***!!!??? The rail-gun still was useless. This S*** persisted through the game and those military F***S would always be in my way hindering my movement making me even more angry. Since when can those fat heavy berzerkers jump in the air, pummel the ground AND do massive damage to you if you don't jump the F*** back!!!??? I finished the game and handed it to my friend while deleteing every copy! Yes, it made me very unhappy.
      Raven software should have stuck to making Shadow Caster 2, Hexen 3 or Heretic 2! NOT this and NOT Wolfenstein, either!
      P.S. RTCW WAS AWESOME!!!

    Ah yes, the much underappreciated Quake 4. The game that everybody hated because A: It wasn't Quake 3 or Quake 1 and B: it continued the story of the Strogg wars from Quake 2, which people had apparently decided was stupid. Personally i loved both Quake 2 and 4 and i played the absolute heck out of them when i was younger. I absolutely loved the idea and the design of the Strogg as an enemy, especially from Quake 2. My only regret with these games was that i didn't have a good enough internet connection to play them online. Being able to play against other people instead of being stuck playing only the SP campagins would have made Q2 and Q4 even better.

      Funny thing is that I never liked Quake 1 when others loved it. Never really got into it. But Quake 2 is just amazing, and I played hundreds of hours of Quake 3 back in a day. Quake 4 is in my top shooters, even higher than Doom 3. It has good atmosphere and scares, and for me, Stroggs are more scary than demons of Doom 3, because you know, that they are basically your former comrades. I kinda see that on surface it looks like futuristic CoD, when it plays much more oldschool, so some folks dismissed it on that first impression but man, what a game. Vehicle parts are meh, I must admit, and I feel that highest difficulty levels are not challenging but unfair but that is only criticism I would ever have.

    I remember playing through the campaign at a summer camp where we were learning game design. That opening cinematic where you see the dead marines and the spacecraft wreckage floating in the void was one of the goriest things I'd even seen in a video game at that time, and I remember after playing only a few minutes, I was completely hooked. Everyone always wanted to do the multiplayer or play Battlefiled 2142 (or whatever year that one is set in), but I'd spend all my free time getting further in the campaign. It kicked me in the teeth over and over on the Normal difficulty since I hadn't played any other old school FPS games besides Half Life at the time, but it was so good I didn't want to stop. Finally finished it and I remember they gave us copies of Battlefield to take home with us at the end of camp, but I was begging for a copy of Quake 4.
    I really need to buy this on Steam when they have another sale.

    Recently got nostalgic for this game as I never finished it on initial release. Downloaded weapon mods, increase damage to lessen bullet sponge, and zoom function for all weapons. Shotgun also has flashlight function. Gotta say that I'm impressed by it. The on rail sections, while a chore, are too few to ruin an otherwise well made FPS experience. I imagine most of the issues were related to multiplayer, because the campaign is pretty damn awesome.

    I remember absolutely loving this game when I first got it and couldn't understand why it got such average reviews. On second and third playthroughs I found that the first half of the game is a bit of a chore to play through, such as the missions where you are still without the strogg suit and have to wait for your squad mates to have a chat to each other before continuing on with the action. If you could take out the vehicle missions, and make the first half of the game as fast and difficult as the second half, the game would be so much better. Although the multiplayer always felt really clunky compared to Quake 3.

    You know I didn't dislike this game. Most of the stuff it did might have been done better by other games but it wasn't by any means bad... I would have loved to see more user mods for it. That sort of thing could take the serviceable in-the-box mechanics and build on them until they really shine.
    Unfortunately I only ever saw one that managed to do that.

    It's definitely easier to come back to this game than it was to play it at the time, it was surrounded by absolute classics of the genre when it came out aging it immediately.
    Think about it, 2004 saw Half Life 2 nearly crack the planet in half with how good it was, DOOM 3 delivering something people never thought they'd see, Far Cry pushing graphics technology. Quake 4 arrived in 2005, with competition from Battlefield 2 which was amazing, COD2 which is a classic, F.E.A.R creating the new standard in action horror, Brothers in Arms with its unique squad mechanics. Then 2006 where we saw a sea change towards console shooters, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Resistance, COD3, the PS2 keeping up with Black and Urban Chaos, then Prey finally came out which in many ways is similar in design to Quake 4, a more traditional PC shooter which at the time was also ignored by many, but if you're looking for a straight forward old school shooter campaign these days Quake 4 and Prey are brilliant to go back to, it's just not what people wanted at the time.

    • @stupaod
      @stupaod 6 років тому +2

      No, stutter is not fine and neither are significant framerate drops. They significantly break immersion and remind you that you're only playing a shitty game. They make the experience feel disjointed and unpolished.
      These issues should have already become things of the past 10 years ago. Lazy half assed development these days and shills defending it as if we should be happy about it and thanking them for their constantly deteriorating quality standards.
      Releasing games broken, unfinished and unoptimized is NOT fine. Releasing games capped at 30fps on PC or consoles is NOT fine. Gaming is in need of another crash. Too many casuals being catered to who often don't have a clue. These issues should have only gotten better over time, not worse. The devs don't even seem to care anymore, they take their audience for granted and can be down right insulting with their practices.
      Alas, time is limited regardless. The whole Western system is going down in flames and the gaming industry will not be spared.

    Q4 is the "black sheep"? REALLY? I couldn't disagree more! I always viewed Q3: Arena as the true "black sheep" in the Quake series. Because it IS! I mean, DON'T get me wrong - it's a very well-made Multiplayer-FPS game and is a LOT of fun to play, but that's the problem - it's NOT an FPS game - it's a MULTIPLAYER-FPS game. ONLY. The closest thing it has to a single-player component is playing exclusively against the CPU bots.
    Not even the vaguest semblance of a narrative is present, nor is there any sense of "progression"; the WHOLE THING takes place purely on a match-by-match basis. Nor is there really consistently reminiscent of Quake as a series... it's JUST a Multiplayer-FPS game that happens to be called "Quake 3", when really the "Arena" part of its title is the only accurate part of it.
    Frankly, I thought they had some nerve charging full retail price for it, back when it came out. They were demanding we pay $50.00 for what other FPS titles usually included as a nifty afterthought to the parts of the game that took actual THINKING, and PLANNING and WRITING to make.
    Actually, in the book Masters of Doom by David Kushner (pick it up if you've never heard of it! It's an excellent novelization about all the guys that formed Id Software), it's made painfully clear that Quake 3: Arena's entire design plan was centered around John Carmack basically getting imaginatively lazy and laboring under the belief that gamers didn't WANT narrative structure or progression in games. Personally though, I also think he was trying to avoid having to bother with any of that stuff, since he was, at that point in time, head-honcho of Id Software. "Engine John" had become so overly focused on his graphics programming that if it didn't pertain directly to fully utilizing the engine's speed and rendering capabilities, it might as well be irrelevant. To him, narratives only slowed things down.
    But for fuck's sake, even Wolf 3D and the original Doom games still had fully-developed single-player campaigns and basic narratives! Okay, yeah, they may have only consisted of 2 or 3 sentences, but at LEAST they were THERE! At least the player had a vague idea of what the fuck was going on, where they were, who they were shooting at, and why, and it made sense.
    I honestly couldn't wrap my head around the hate surrounding Quake 4. I thought it was good! At least it was an ACTUAL continuation of the series, finally! It had Strogg to kill, the levels and art design and music were all themed after Quake 2, but also felt fresh and new enough to remain interesting throughout the whole game. Basically, it was a SEQUEL to Quake 2.

      +Xandermorph i enjoyed the ever living fuck out of quake 4, perfect dark zero and Prey I refused to touch call of duty 2 I hated it for the most part i did really like 4 because of how fresh it felt at the time but other than that its formula and control scheme is WAYYY over used and dead. awsome games like FEAR 1 were sadly dumbed down to corny trash like F3AR publishers decided that we want more Halo/COD in all of our games and less Quake/unreal/NOLF/perfect dark. Quake 4 is a proper sequel to Q2 not counting that it had the original Q3 multiplayer on top of an amazing campaign at launch glitch free something we don't see today in any game today.

      I can't really enjoy Half Life 2 anymore because of the effects it had on games up to this day. It gave all these devs the idea that making people hold W during what's basically an unskippable cut scene is some great thing since it keeps player "control" (instead of doing it like in HL1, where you actually had control at all times after that opening sequence)

    I know this video is old, but I'm a recent subscriber, so I've kinda been binging on your content... I'm so glad to see someone else that loves old school shooters as much as me.
    Quake 4 was the first game I picked up at the Xbox 360 launch, and I still think it's one of the stronger shooters on the platform, despite its framerate issues. Plus the flawless port/HD remaster of Quake 2 that was included was an incredible bonus.
    I wish my laptop didn't need a new motherboard, or they'd put Quake 4 on backward compatibility for Xbox One. I'd love to play though it again.

    Quake 4 was the first game to get me into PC gaming and get me back into gaming again after a 4 year hiatus. I spent about 9,000-11,000 hours in multiplayer. Q4Max0.82 was basically how the games multiplayer SHOULD have been by default. GTR or "Game-Type-Revolution" 0.72b which was a bit more like Q3 CPMA with air control + the new crouch slide which made for some very interesting movment possibilities. Nearly all of my gaming time was spent with either CTF or Arena CTF which had power ups like doubler, guard, scout and ammo regen. I started dueling a bit too late though when the game was almost completely dead. Thank god for Quake Champions. Now I can play as Slash who moves like Q4 multiplayer. I wish they'd have introduced Kane or one of the strogg enemies for the Q4 movement.

    Indeed, Quake 4 got a lot of undeserved hate. It surely feels pretty different from the older Quake games, but this isn't necessarily a flaw. I see it more like an attempt to translate the Quake formula into the "language" of modern shooters.
    The unifying element of the Quake series is not the visual style or the storylines, it's rather the spirit and the hot explosive gameplay. It's a game that aims to quake you to the core, regardless of whether this happens in dark Lovecraftian dungeons or in a high-tech Strogg facility.
