    Thank you. I too was having high temps. Around 80c just idling. I re-pasted with a high grade past and now I'm idling at 53c. NICE!

    I have already done this. My MSI R9 390x started getting temps of 95C. It was actually throttling my card. I had it over clocked to 1130Mhz (core) and 1700Mhz (memory). It was dropping my OC to 900-1000 Mhz. So I decided to drop my OC to 1115Mhz and it was still throttling. I decided to take it out and take it apart and like you, I used arctic silver 5 compound. I also cleaned my fans and the heat sink with Q-tips, 91% alcohol, a vacuum, and a can of compressed air. My temps under a full load and over clocked to 1140 Mhz core and 1700 Mhz memory were only 69-71 deg. Celsius after 2 hours of Valley benchmark and my fans never got to 100%. If you are not afraid of the possible repercussions and are tech savvy enough than this is a good idea. I've been happy ever since.

      Try using liquid metal, the temps will drop further.. I use it on my 390x.

    I had same thing going on with my card, 94 celsius on 100% load and from there it starts thermal throttling.
    Changed thermal paste and now I've been stressing it for almost 24 hours on 100% load with only 79-80 celsius and fan speed is only like 75% when it used to be 100%, overclocked to VCORE 1185 / VRAM 1700. It's a great card, paid only 130 € of it!
    I used Gelid GC Extreme paste.

    Bro this video was a lifesaver man! Thank you so much! I'll be replacing my thermal paste on the card today. I was getting 90-91C on idle on the desktop! In game it was hitting 98-99c!!! So hopefully new thermal paste will bring this down to reasonable temps.

    Just found your channel. Very informative. Doing this exact same thing to my XFX R 9 390x not so much because I have super high temps (max temp has been 82 C) but because I want to see if the temps can be better. Good luck with your channel. Subbed.

    Nice video, it seems like a common occurrence for MSI 390s to start degrading in thermal performance. I repasted my gpu as well and it helped out a lot for a crossfire configuration.

  • @jpracing893

    got an MSI R9 290x and for the longest time my card would hit it's thermal throttle limit of 94 degrees and thottle itself back down to around 85 dropping to 900mhz. Recently changed the thermal paste and now it sits comfortably in the mid to high 70s even with a 1140mhz core clock, and for a 290x which is less power efficient than a 390/390x its amazing. Wish I would've dome it sooner.

    Hey danny a general question about overclocking:
    I want to get the highest stable possible oc on my msi rx 480 8g, but i want to know how to do it safely. My only concern is voltage. Using afterburner, how much should i move the voltage slider. Ive heard from many people and read a guide on a forum that it's safe to move the core voltage slider all the way to the right. I have doubt that is safe. What are your thoughts on that? And did you get the max possible oc on your r9 390? Have any recommendations please?

    I always procrastinated on repasting my 390 and Xeon 1231, but the paste got really old by now and I have to 😂 Im excited about how its gonna change my temps! Im also gonna relubricate the fans as they developed a really annoying grinding noise.

    Great vid! I have almost your same configuration. However im running an XFX DD. I find my self running into high temps as well. And i wanted to ask you how does under voltage affect your gaming performance? Have you seen any diffs in dropped frames?

    • @DannyzReviews

      undervolting hasn't affected my gaming performance at all. I basically get the same framerate that I did before the undervolt. The only difference undervolting does is decrease your temps and power consumption.

    Hi, i just apply new termal paste (CM MasterGel Maker Nano) to my 390 and at idle it went down like 3 to 5 degrees and at load from 8 to 10 which imo it's pretty good, now i was wondering what fan curve do you have for the card i was using 1°C = 1% but idk i think it can have more speed since the fans are not that loud. Sorry for my english :c

    I know this is an old video. But, I recently built a new computer with a micro-itx case and my old r9 390x is sitting right against the PSU bottom shroud. I may have already pulled apart this card, or it may have been the other card (since I had 2 in crossfire at one point) ... either way, I'm going to open this card up again and see if I did swap the stock thermal paster for some AS5 or MX5 or whatever paste I had. I'll also try undervolting. If that doesn't work (since I'm throttling at 95.C in light gaming), I'm going to take my drill/ dremel to the steel directly below my GPU fans or add more intake fans and set the fan curve based on GPU temp to blast it. We'll see what makes it happy.
    Great vid though, cheers!

      I just replaced a bad fan with a bigger one by hot glueing it ontop of where i took the bad one out. Reapplied sum cheap corsair thermal paste cuz my old paste was crispy lol. I gained about 10 degree drop. Went from idle of 58-60 down to 45-48.(47 right now) I was hitting up to 94c while gaming at ultra, have not tesed yet to see how much lower while gaming. Also I have 3 screens so I know the temp already runs a lil on the warmer side .

    What apply method did you use? Did you use a lot, a little, or in between? Should you clean the paste around the chip itself?

    • @hometownshmn4594
      @hometownshmn4594 7 років тому

      You can check out video of same thing on my channel (sorry if this is advertising!), I don't claim to be professional but I got my 94 degrees temps to 80 on 24 hours of 100% stress test and my card has pretty decent overclocking. Used slightly more paste than typically but it worked out just fine!
      I basically just put some paste in the middle of the chip, slightly more than size of pea that I typically use, then when assembling card back together gave it a small twist so paste spreads out on chip.
      I didn't bother cleaning from around the chip but of course if you're perfectionist you do that too ;)

    Hi,..I have exactly the same GPU,..an MSI R9-390. I want to to try this undervolting. Does MSI Afterburner clash with AMD Crimson software at all? As you know, Crimson comes with all AMD Drivers now and some settings can be played with in Global Overdrive. I take it then you leave Crimson well alone at default settings and just use Afterburner? Thanks.

    • @DannyzReviews
      @DannyzReviews  8 років тому +1

      +Nunsweepit421 that's exactly what I do. I leave everything at default. I mostly only use crimson if I need to mess around with Vsync, anti aliasing, and fps targets. For all my graphic card's options such as clock speeds, voltage, and fan curves I used msi afterburner.

      @Stringbean421 8 років тому

      Thanks for your reply. I'll give it a go. A comment further below by someone asks if you could possibly make a video about undervolting and you mentioned that you might do one on both undervolting and overclocking. Are you still thinking about doing that by any chance?

    • @petrofsko
      @petrofsko 7 років тому

      Nunsweepit421 If you read my post at the top it does lend to the possibility that using msi afterburner may do a better job at keeping the Msi r9 390x temps down by pushing the dial all the way to the right.I stopped doing this for at least 7to 8 months whilst playing at Super resolution 3200x1200 and overclocking the card with the amd crimson.Maybe better just using afterburner?

  • @MrVlodato
    @MrVlodato 5 років тому

    people are so silly...IF YOU OWN A 390 IT WILL NOT THROTTLE UNTIL 94c. Your card at 94c is absolutely no different then it at 84c or even 50c. Overclocking GPUs also makes little sense to me, its only for people looking to do benchmarks. Overclocking a gpu for gaming will get you anywhere for 0 to 20 FPS max, if an overclock is holding you back from playing a game then you probably need a new GPU. Playing games with an overclock and ricking crashing mid game/match is just not worth it.

  • @petermuller9244

    The thinner the layer the better. The point of thermal compound is not to transport heat. The point of thermal compound is to prevent any air beeing between GPU die and cooler. The metal of the cooler conducts heat much better than any thermal compound. When tc dries it becomes a problem because air gets between die and cooler. You can get better results though with liquid metal thermal compound.

    Now I got my MSI r9 390x from overclockers uk on February 2016 great card never had any issues played all my games on ultra at Super resolution in Amd Catalyst control centre only thing is 4weeks ago one of the metal holdings that connects the fan tray to the gpu heatsink snapped of probably due to not being able to withstand the temps,causing the fan tray to hang down at onside and a fan to clatter against the gpu heatsink.I thought I could smell something ah well 😔. So sent an RMA to overclockers uk who sent it to MSI in the Netherlands who've got around a week left as they've got 28 working days since 11/01/17to either fix it or replace it with the same card.What does any recommend I do, check the temps after I install my replacement MSI r9 390x couple weeks down the line or open it up and get with Arctic 5 paste first day?😃

    • @DannyzReviews
      @DannyzReviews  7 років тому +1

      +xICrime you could do this to any graphics card. If you feel like your Asus 390x is overheating the give it a go. Although I'm not sure how much that will help because the Asus 390x cooler wasn't properly designed for the PCB. Asus literally took the cooler off of the 980ti and slapped it on the 390x so some of headpipes aren't making proper contact. Try to see if you can rma the card, as an overheating card is a valid reason for why someone would rma a card.

    fuck that my shitty ass R9 390 goes 94 degrees like it's nothing. I took apart the heatsink and turns out the heatsink has absolutely no contact with the vram on the gpu and that was the case. So my fix for this is to get those tiny heatsinks and some thermal heat conductive double sided tape to stick the micro heatsinks on the vrams and then put back the main heatsink on. But then there is another issue, my shitty ass country does not have that shit and if it is available i gotta go and look at some ghetto ass places so fml.
