    Great video. I did this same procedure to a friend's discarded HD 6870 about a year ago - it made a world of difference. (He gave me this card for free, believing it no longer worked.) In this card's case, the fan had also died - so I took the ghetto-tastic route of zip-tying a high-rpm 80mm fan to the plastic case. Noisy - but effective. Worked like a charm! It went from making horrible grinding noises (bad fan bearings), terrible performance, and dangerous temps (90+) to running like new. I saw temperature drops of over 30 degrees with the same load, and since the card no longer had to throttle just to keep from melting, my FPS jumped quite a lot as well. These days I'm running a newer card, but I still keep the little Frankenstein around to remind me what a difference a little human intervention and maintenance can make.

    My graphics card has overheating problems. It runs over 90° in normal circumstances, and regularly my computer screen will go black and the GPU fan starts to blow full throttle. I've been doing some research on how to fix that problem and I found your video. As it happens, my GPU is a 4 year old NVidia GTX580, the exact same featured in this video. This is the perfect guide I was looking for. Now I have to gather the supplies I need for the operation... wish me luck.

      Vox Nihili Well, I've never seen a graphics card throttle or crash when it was around 80 degrees Celsius. Where I work, we had a card today, that hit 84 degrees celcius. Can't remember which one it was. A couple of weeks ago we have a GTX 780 SLI setup where the cards would max out at a 100 degrees Celsius. When it hits 90+, I get worried, but below that I'd not be worried at all. I don't even know what my own GTX 690 runs at. Hmmm, I should check.

    • @drewb242
      @drewb242 9 років тому +1

      ***** Neither have I but thats not the point. If you worry about longevity a card that never gets above 70c is generally going to last quite a bit longer than a card that runs at above 80c every time you put it under load. Not to mention artifacting which is much more likely to occur at those higher temps.

    • @ShamblerDK
      @ShamblerDK 9 років тому

      +ϟ STORM ϟ All the new graphics cards, does run cooler. We've entered into a new age of electronics with extremely small manufacturing processes. This means that components will require less power and thus produce less heat. Furthermore, manufacturers are getting better at optimizing their electronics - giving you more "bang for the buck".

    I am just watching this in 2020. However, tips that I would give first are. If your computer is shutting down, firstly do these steps. 1) Check the thermal paste and CPU cooler and re apply that first 2) If it still shuts down, if you have an onboard graphics card. Remove your graphics card and then attach to the onboard GPU. 3) If you have no problem with the onboard GPU, then of course start following this video. If you do have a problem even with the onboard GPU, then potentially it is near the death of your CPU. I never over clock my PC's so my PC's last for decades, however, one of my PC's is now in trouble, hence having to google and youtube information. I was actually keeping an eye on the CPU temps and they were not over heating, when it shut down. I for one are not looking forward to taking the GPU apart, my first time of doing so, and I will reference this video again when I come to tear it down.

    Good video, man. It's scary as shit to do this the first time. Before I did this on my both my 290x cards, I took apart all the damn cards I had laying around, and replaced all the pads/ paste. I took my sweet time on a 280x, since it was the closest thing to a 290x I had on hand. After doing it a couple times, I felt confident enough to risk destroying two $500+ cards.

    yeah...3 basic things and the most effective to do is clean your fan from dirt,put new thermal paste and if you want beter temps then put your fan speed on higher speed,my GPU is GTX650 and when im idling its 33 C,when gaming (after OC I did) its 72-74 deagrease,without OC its 66-68 and its not that new,I have this card for a year and a half and every month im cleaning it and I never got more then 74 degrease and I got my max OC

    Great guide. I still have a gtx 980 wich suddenly runs at 94 degree (YES!)after 4 months usage. Will send it to manufacturer still have warranty. But i have tried literally everything. It is weird tho why the cards start act like that.

    I dont know if you'll remember @jayztwocents but were your gpu fans topping out? My rx580 (msi armor oc 8gb) can no longer handle too many particles on screen at once, smoke, fire etc, fans top out, gpu usage hit 102% at one point temps dont actually go over 70odds either, driving me nuts. System has crashed a couple of times, as soon as i rotate 180degrees away from effect/s fans slow down again but theyre definitely alot more sensitive! Bought the card used a couple of years ago and it worked fine intil a few weeks ago. Do you think this is a hardware issue more than a servicing issue? Thanks.

    You can honestly use any method you want on the CPU, as long as you don't apply too much. The only one I would honestly advise against is making a very flat plane across the entire CPU (as this can create air pockets when the heatsink is applied), but otherwise a dot or a line, four lines, or eight won't make a difference. As long as it's on there and coats it well, you'll be fine.

    Way too relevant. I recently had someone fix my gpu. An rtx 2080. The artifacts were gone but when i tested it with unigine superposition the score was low and the temp was at 85c. I opened up my gpu and realized he put the wrong thermal pad underneath the heat sink it looked like a mini sponge. I applied thermal compound myself and the temp was reduced by 30c and my framrate and score doubled. Thank you for the video 😃

    GPU temp tend to around 46-48c when not playing games, but when playing games like skyrim or Dragon Dogama or high and low end games, temp tend to be around 66c but however when i play witcher 3 and art evolve temp tend to jump up to 82c.

    What I usually do is immediately upon getting a new graphics card (or CPU), I replace their thermal paste with mine (I have been using Arctic MX-4 lately) since the aftermarket higher end TIMs tend to be better.

    Is it just me or did Jay forget to mention that to remove a PCIe graphics card you have to pull the locking clip towards the CPU ? (Or on some boards you have to slide a lock clip towards the back of the slot) If you don't do that you either won't succeed in taking out the card or I think you might damage the PCIe socket...

      GPUs need way more than a CPU. I've used the CPU method on the exact same EVGA 580 and it wasn't nearly enough. I opened it back up and had to throw on 3x for a good even spread. Temps dropped too after putting more on. Jay and EK have it right on this one.

"Fast forward a year" so any way my 2070 is stupid hot and I think I need to do this cuz my frame rate on far cry 5 goes from 60 to 5 but then again it only started doing tht 2 days ago then I accidentally elbowed the frame in my open air case smh so idk we'll see

    I have to thank you for this video. i used Grizzlies Krynoaut thermal paste. best thing i ever did to my Old R9 290. i had to under clock it to 500MHZ so it doesn't thermal throttle. i used this paste , and on Base clock (977mhz) it only goes up to 76C , i over clocked it to 1000Mhz , and still only runs 79C on Average. Will you make a Video of stock thermal paste vs 5 different aftermarket Thermal paste please? Include Grizzlies Kryonaut please :)
