    Great information and enjoyable to watch - even if it is for an art history course. Also the presenters sound like announcers from NPR.

    This is actually a bit more than just "cool history". Ma'at asks you 42 questions; have you stolen? Have you killed another? You will answer these questions and be judged accordingly. The soul is eternal, the YOU is not. Your soul will continue on as a spark from the Source (Ra). If you have not lived a decent life, YOU will no longer exist, as seen unfit by the Gods and your soul will be cleansed and purified and returned to another human body for another attempt to live in love, not fear.

      wow this is so much nicer then the heaven and hell story. I dont want to live on past this life. The idea that you will no longer exist if hyou cant past this test is very attractive. I only want to live this one life. I have no intrest in an afterlife. Please give my soul to someone who'll deserve it.

    A book of the dead would cost half a year's pay! but it was essential and many Egyptians bought one as soon as they could.

    This scroll would help each spirit to get to the field of reeds by providing spells to get past each demon, and get to the 'weighing of the heart' were Anubis (god of the dead and embalming) would weigh your heart (soul) against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of peace and balance, if you passed, you could pass into the field of reeds, if you did not pass, the dead swallower would consume your soul and you would be lost for eternity. These scrolls helped to stop this from happening by guiding you in how to approach all the different gods on your journey.

      I thought if that anubis pet ate your 🫀 you would be erase and don't exist anymore. But lost where? Would you survive? What really is the field of reeds?

    • @thewr0ngchild
      @thewr0ngchild 2 роки тому

      @@mistylover7398 The field of reeds is basically the afterlife, the kingdom of Osiris. When your soul ascends there, you join Osiris for eternity, in a similar way to the Christian belief that souls enter heaven to spend eternity with Jesus. There are a lot of similarities between Jesus and Osiris if you study both religions.
      Most religions from this time period portray the death of the body as an 'ascention' if you like. Ascending to a higher state of being.
      Both religions are also very similar in the way they deal with the wrongdoers. In Christianity, if you do wrong in life, you will be punished in death at judgement, where god will judge your soul, in a very similar way to the weighing of the heart. If you've done wrong, god will send you to hell, where your soul burns with the devil for eternity, and in Kemetic Paganism, if your heart/soul is heavy with sin, your heart will be fed to the demon known as the devourer, and you will be damned to eternal darkness.
      There isn't really a devil in Kemeticism though. The most 'evil' god is Sett, but really he is just a troublemaker, a bit like Loki in Norse mythology. Just the belief that 'bad' souls will spend eternity in nothingness. I think this is actually worse than hell, because at least in hell, god can, and has, changed his mind and lifted souls from hell into heaven, but in this pantheon, there seems to be no second chances.

    Am afraid Dr Finkel of the British Museum with his collection of over 130,000 cuneiform clay tablets would not agree that papyrus is the most important material for ancient texts.... far too perishable.

      Fair enough, but listen for the qualifier, "right up to the Medieval [era]." And of course the books on my shelves are paper not clay; despite their fragility paper (papyrus ) does offer certain advantages.
