Not only that but he has one of the most noble and heroic OST of any Eldritch horror monster
That's the thing that I never stop to love about Fromsoft. They make things so ugly but fit so well in the context that they are noble

@@user-up1hi6zs2g For me it's the fact that despite now being a somewhat horrific creature. In his second phase he finds his beloved sword and fights on 2 legs; and the soundtrack changing makes it all feel like you are fighting a Knight and not a monster inside a nightmare
Some will say Gascoigne, some wil say Maria, some will say Gehrman but for me Ludwig is the definetly the best Bloodborne boss, he's just so perfectly designed.

Eh. I’d say a solid 85% of the community has Ludwig or Orphan as their number 1 lol.
Fun fact: at the end of the fight, when Ludwig is almost dead, he always gets stunned (like here 4:34). The player will have the choice - kill Ludwig with visceral attack (and the boss will die screaming like a human) or just punch him with any other attack and Ludwig will die screeching like a beast.
Also he puts the sword in the ground before dying
You think there's some kind of symbolism there of the hunter tearing out the beast from within Ludwig in his final stand?
@@robofreak425 Well, you can slaughter him like any other beast, and he will die like a beast, or you can give him a noble death like execution or something, and he will take it like a human being. Ludwig is such a great character in Bloodborne world, so giving the player the opportunity to give him a kind of respectable death is very nice from developers.
@@robofreak425absolutely, visceral attacks themselves are symbolic references to early surgical procedures where speed was paramount in order to minimize pain, bleeding, and risk of infection. You subdue the patient and get to work as fast as possible, its brilliant symbolism.

Best From boss battle ever so far. The atmospheric transition from fighting a nightmarish monstrosity to the last vestiges of a noble swordsman was incredible.

Yeah I think so too, I haven't fought any Elden Ring bosses that I like as much as Ludwig. Coolest design, two unique phases with great movesets, best music and just the pure enjoyment factor as well. Gael and Ludwig are the cream of the crop.

I find the inherit symbolism in what kind of beast people turn into to be really fascinating, and one of the unsung purposeful details in Bloodborne. Most people turn into some kind of wolf, symbolizing their mindless violence (though Amelia is more of a deer-dog thing? Not sure what that's about). Then of course there's the Beggar who retains both his human face and his intelligence, which either makes him more or less monstrous!
Then there's Ludwig. Ludwig gets turned into a horse. A workhorse if you will.
Ludwig was the workhorse of the Church, and an adherent to the moonlight greatsword, which he himself admits he never tried to understand. He was basically the ultimate follower, somebody who did whatever people wanted him to do and didn't ask any questions--exactly who Gehrman tells us to be in the beginning of the game. So he becomes a horse, a famously panicky and finicky animal, a creature that lashes out in fear. It makes him much more pathetic than the other beasts. Even more so than Gascoigne or Amelia, I feel like I'm putting down a suffering animal whenever I fight Ludwig. That is, until he reclaims his humanity--the only beast to do so.
What a game.
Also fitting that the church hunter who expected to come across far larger and more terrifying beasts turned into the largest and most terrifying beast in the game
Also worth noting the other side of the horse. That they are commonly seen as majestic and heroic. Fitting of the hunter Ludwig was and became during his fight
Great symbolism but im pretty sure he just fused with his horse, probably because he would have been a hunter on horseback. That could also explain the extra limbs and the even for bloodborne extreme disfigurement
Amelia is like a dog or golden retriever, symbolising her loyalty to the healing church and why she clutches onto the gold pendant
The noble steed. The one whom a knight rides upon into battle. Despite it all, it only took one glance to return the hero to the battlefield. Sadly... It was on the wrong side.
I found his 2nd phase to be much more easier than the 1st. As the Accursed, his movements are erratic and his aggressive advances made it so difficult to get an attack in. I eventually defeated him, man, what an incredible fight.

My favorite Bloodborne boss for sure, then Gascoigne ranks up there as well. The music is otherworldly, an absolute masterpiece.

Always loved how Ludwig goes out at least in the most human form he can be. Allows him to go out with dignity.
This boss.....this is the boss that is clear proof how Bloodborne is masterclass. The moment of introducing the legendary moonlight greatsword with *THAT* music is so good, it made this already awesome fight into one of the best.
Not only my favorite boss in Any From Soft game, but this is my go to example when I point how important music is in any media. Phase 2 of this fight when it becomes a waltz, is one of the most poignant moments of any Bossfight I have ever played. The boss moving to the beat and the rhythm constantly, forcing you to for lack of a better term analogy - dance… Is something that we had hardly ever seen before. Music and sound design have always been important… but this fight alone is such a blatant example of both, it is awesome to watch peoples first experience of it.

Honestly, this has an amazing theme song, no doubts about it, but I prefer Lady Maria's theme and Gehrman to this.

It’s supposed to be serious but I found it funny
The storytelling in this fight is the best in the game, in my opinion. You as the hunter are able to kill the beast in Ludwig, allowing his humanity to wake up and remember who he was. Ludwig knows it's over for him, that he's beyond saving, but the clarity and relief in his voice shows he that he knows he's been gone a long time and he's happy knowing he'll die as a man. I think the only missing line of dialogue here would be, "Finish me, hunter. Let me die as the Holy Blade."

Ludwig fills every aspect of Bloodborne into his ONE fight. He shows us the beastly side of our enemies, the human and hunter side of things, and the cosmic parts. He is the embodiment of every aspect of the game. That’s why to me, he the perfect boss fight in the game. 8 years later, this game is and forever will be my favorite
Bloodborne was my first souls game, when I got to the DLC and fought ludwig for the first time I had never before experienced a boss that was as aggressive as he is in phase 1, it took me a while to get over the fact I had no clue on how to go about attacking him but eventually I beat him and the rest of the DLC :D
Haven't seen anyone mention it but I also love the sound of the moonlight sword when it's revealed, and once he two hands it the intensity triples. So powerful that it brought his humanity back for one last fight.

I love the detail on his design. You can even see the original form of the holy moonlight sword on his back before the second phase cutscene. Truly magnificent boss.
THIS is my favorite boss from Bloodborne. Even though he gave me a stressful time with his phase one. In the end, I let him rest while seeing the moonlight. Hey Ludwig, thanks for the weapon.

I JUST now realized** when he jumps up into what is seemingly a void of non-existence, right when Ludwig is about to body slam your Hunter’s ass, there’s a “rain” of blood right above you secretly telling you he’s about to land on you.
I like this boss fight, because of how it changes.
The 1st phase, he is lashing out like an animal in danger, his moveset is chaotic, there is no flow to it, he is quick to attack, there is a lot of animal screaming
The 2nd phase he sees the sword and the little spark of humanity inside of him gets "remembered" and now his moveset changes from animal-like to a master of a sword. His movements have flow to them, he no longer screams like an animal, his attacks are no longer all over the place, instead they are directed with purpose and control.
And how you kill him also reflects it, he either dies like an animal screaming or he dies like a human screaming but not like a beast.
Fought him and beat him for the first time today (as well as the whole game). Awesome boss fight and one of the best boss themes in any video game imo.

The main thing here is that you gave him the honourable death! He staggers close to death and you can either keep mashing him up, or you can give him the honour he deserves! He may of been a pita but that music and side of humanity left in him is why I've always preffered the honourable death.

Don't know how soon they'll do that or if they ever will. Before they do that however, I would like them to release an updated version for new gen hardware and give it some sharper visuals at the same time + 60(+) fps. Maybe since Sony is open to it now, maybe even re-release it on PC.

I love how this fight starts as a simple beast fight to a true fight once the shadow of Ludwig's former life gets highlighted by the light of his moonlight. And I love that, showing despite how fucked things are for the man he is now despite all of that he is still Ludwig, a man who was hardened by the cruel world and fought against it with the church.
The holy blade theme is one of the best sound track in gaming
First time fighting Ludwig I was struggling with his Beast phase forever. Once I got him to half health and he pulled out the Moonlight greatsword, I died thanks to complete shock. The beast that's been destroying me, is now standing up and is wielding the most famous greatsword by Fromsoftware
I had a similar experience, but i died in the second phase because i was so utterly enamored by the music i was pretty much driven to tears. Then, after i beat him, the tragedy sunk in that i wont get to hear that glorious music until i come back around in ng+
I think ill start a new run and just get a character to ludwig but never beat him, just so i can go back to that fight whenever.

As much as I love other FromSoft games and bosses this will always be my favourite boss fight. The challenge, the machanics, the lore, the music, the best use of the moonlight great sword - just perfect imo.

Bloodborne was my very first Soulsborne game, and I gotta say, Ludwig is the best boss fight in my opinion. The whole game before Ludwig was fairly easy, but once I reached this boss, I really had to play strategically and learn his whole moveset.
It took me around 10 tries to beat him.
"First souls game" "easy" I smell someone got carried by a boyfriend or actual good players. Everyone who has ever said "these are super easy" was always at all times in a three man group gang fighting and ganking. Homie please that that lying shit back to Riot.

some of the best boss music i ever heard
im trying to beat ludwig at the moment, ive spent 3 hours on him, more than 25 attempts and got to phase 2 only once. Despite this, i love the boss fight, everything about it is so cool, it doesnt feel like a chore, instead it truly tests your perseverance and makes you master all of his moves. cause of this, i actually keep coming back to him to try beat him, every single other boss i struggled with just made want to quit and stop playing (apart from gehrman). ludwig is the best boss in bloodborne.
This is exactly why we need a Bloodborne prequal tv show Ludwig and a lot of the other characters are so interesting and I want to see them explored more in a gothic Lovecraftian horror tv show

Watching a bloodthirsty beast rise up with sword in hand and fight like the ancient warfighter he was is simply terrifying and epic at the same time. And that background music only makes the fight better.
one of the best games I ever played and my fave souls like. love the victorian aesthetic this game has.. I wish bluepoint would get their hands on this for a remaster/remake like Demon's Souls

@@Quiqueleal85 in order to be a souls game it has to have all the fundamentals that have been in every game since demon souls like the combat, world design, items, souls, leveling system, and character customization and has to be made by fromsoft. The souls games so far are demon souls, dark souls 1-3, Bloodbourne and Elden Ring.

Just beat bloodborne after elden ring and it was much easier but damn it was a bit better than elden ring idk why it was just so good and fun.
Bloodborne is a timeless classic. It is just masterclass, fromsoftware will never top what they did with bloodborne and thats not a bad thing at all.

Hands down my favorite from software boss of all time. Ludwig took me over 20 hours to finally beat over the span of 2 days. 16 hours the first day (all failures) and 4 more hours the second day to finally beat him, such a brilliant design, amazing soundtrack, and seeing the moonlight greatsword in his hands was wild 10/10
i loved fighting ludwig, but i can never get far enough on a new character to fight him again. its sad but soon ill be able to feel the pleasure of fighting ludwig once more

I think Ludwig is both Kin and Beast. He is lined with eyes and fused with his horse because of his exposure to the cosmos via the moonlight sword. He also embibed in the blood that turned everyone into beasts. He's the most unique boss in the game.

this boss was an absolute nightmare but for whatever reason the Undead Giant which i think is one of the last chalice dungeon bosses was even worse, that dude 1 shots you regardless, spent hours on it

I just made a connection: In Armored Core 6, a weapon called “Moonlight” is a melee weapon that launches blue-green blades in much the same way that Ludwig’s Holy Blade does. He even goes so far as to call is “His guiding moonlight.”
