However if you keep dealing fire damage and not take his viceral attack offer, he dies screaming like a beast without his sword. So you either give him an honorable death or you slaughter him a beast.

When he covers the beast side with his sword, to show the human side of his face is so indicative of where this fight is about to go. There is no longer a beast, but the warrior we've heard tales about, Ludwig.
And in the game this reflects too, phase 1 is weak to serrated weapons (they do more damage to beasts) while phase 2 isn't (he "isn't" no longer a beast)

I had the music blasting at full volume on my tv, until my neighbors complained and threatened to call the local police officers... ...who then proceeded to arrest my neighbors and knock on my door to recommend even louder speakers.
tipoomaster with they did that with some of the DS3 bosses like the Abyss Watchers or the Twin Princes, those two tracks have parts made for the phase transition cutscene in the first phase, but unlike here it's not fixed to the cutscene. Also the Twin Princes's has terrible loops where it's clear when it actually loops. Still not the biggest fan of the second phase of the Abyss Watchers track, it loses all its momentum after such an amazing transition part.
Fun fact, once the second phase starts, Ludwig stops receiving bonus damage from serggeted weapons. The game itself is saying, "You no longer fight a beast. Now, you face a man."
We are still fighting it as the Moonlight Sword can speak to its wielder, as why Ludwig says his mentor, and the like. The Moonlight Sword must’ve corrupted him and told him to kill you.

This scene means so much to me because it's a masterpiece in character design. He looks so disgusting and terrifying but they mange to convey so much emotion with it, like in the second cutscene, as he falls you can see the hope disappearing from his face as he gives up the will to fight, but when the green light hits his face you can see the great swordsman return, this monster suddenly becomes more human In this moment. And the way his design is made to look good on all fours and standing up is perfect, it's intimidating but holds a stance and attacks that looked as if they were developed after years of fighting, unlike the beast flailing around with no cohesive attacks this man fights with skill. Even his voice, in the first phase he was loudly screaming and screeching while in the holy sword state he is grunting like a human. In my eyes he is no longer fighting to win, he is fighting to show that he is still in there and that he wants to go out as a warrior of the sword, moving on with his master to the end. Sorry this was so long I just love this fight.

The concept of this boss going from pathetically disgusting to heroically majestic at the halfway point gave me so many chills. When I saw him regain his sanity I was so overwhelmed by goosebumps that I lost just from sheer lack of self-control.
I was not expecting manly tears when this fight started. That I'd remember this thing as 'noble'. From hellish horror to some kind of tragically heroic centaur knight... that I helped die as himself.
Imagine how powerful he'd be if he got out of that fight alive, story-wise. We're talking a creature with the same physical stature and strength as a fucking cleric beast while carrying a Moonlight Great sword. Not to mention he regained at least some of his swordsmanship ability when his sanity returned.
Ludwig is easily my favourite. Imagine being such a strong-willed badass that you're able to overcome a virus that turned you into a deformed centaur monster and regain your humanity to have one final fight and die honourably?
it's not a virus, it's a curse from the eldritch gods that was transferred through the healing blood injections everyone keep taking in Yharnam, and if you notice Ludwig's Guidance Rune, it increases the user's Rally Potential, and that Ludwig's penchant for frontline combat meaning showering in beast blood all the time on top of the Guidance Rune, his extreme transformation is not unbelievable
I had the most trouble with this guy of all the bloodborne bosses, died countless times, finally beat him with one of the in game NPCs helping me. I then beat Maria in one try and Child of Koss in 3 tries. Must be my gaming style or something because everyone says Ludwig isn't that hard.
Oh you can summon npc to help you? In my case, every time I summon Henrietta she goes straight to the mobs in the area and never comes the boss fight area, I'm so happy about wasting insight in this way lol
It's interesting how the Moonlight in previous games was seen as a cleansing light that wards off dark and is the antithesis of evil. Yet, in Bloodborne the moon is synonymous with evil and the great ones, which sort of reverses it's role. Instead of being a regular holy sword, it's a sword described as being holy, but seems connected to a major source of evil in the game.
Straight Busta Interesting to another that from Midir’s soul, you could get the Old moonlight spell. Maybe Seath’s influence on dragons is greater than we thought.

When I fought Ludwig for the first time the into gave me straight goosebumps and his story almost made me cry. When he finally comes to his senses and regains some sense of humanity it's truly a triumph. We've all been there, utterly consumed by something. At least he was able to come out of it and die with dignity. What a master stroke.

My favorite part of this fight, is how Ludwigs beast form looks like his humanity is still there, transformed, but the human side is hanging on as much as it can. Then the moonlit sword gives that humanity a fighting chance. A man turned beast, standing upright and becoming a beast of a man. It's perfect!
I'd most definitely classify Bloodborne as being in the horror rpg genre, which sadly never took off and hadnt seen an addition to said genre really since the ps2 age with, I think, Shadow Hearts.
I would absolutely classify Bloodborne under a horror genre. aside from the aspects of cosmic horror inspired by Lovecraft (which are arguably the most unsettling), some of the body horror in this game is *beyond* grotesque. many of these designs are absolutely disgusting, I mean for the love of god, Ludwig has a second head which is a mouth comprised of a few teeth, and endless rows of eyeballs descending into the throat. that’s horrific.
Is it just me, or is the second phase actually easier? He acts a lot less aggressively, then, at least for me. Kinda the opposite of the Orphan of Kos or Gascoigne.

it is more of a show than a challenge. It's like rewarding you for pulling off phase 1 and survive into phase 2. Instead become more feral, he regains his humanity and fights you with stances of human, not a beast. Same goes for Laurence, to be honest. His legless phase 3 is more of a show of his misery to make us feel pity for him. It is easier than his phase 1
+Julius Tapert system sellers are definitely a thing. and nobody is saying that the system seller is the only thing you'll play but it's the primary reason. I got a ps4 "Only" for Bloodborne. I play other games on ps4 but bloodborne is the reason I got a ps4. 100% worth it and I would do it again
The best part about the Holy Blade is that it feels almost like a reward for defeating his first phase; you’ve beaten him in his beast form, and now you’re rewarded with an epic, full-on absolute blast of a battle between two god tier hunters.
@Sakunta Dharma I disagree. The Cleric beast was most likely a church hunter that served under Ludwig given the item he dropped, therefore one must beat the cleric beast with pretty much any weapon of the healing church such as the Holy Blade or Kirkhammer to do this challenge and succeed.
The lyrics of the ost are being sung from the perspective of the moonlight greatsword. Based on its choice of words, It revealed itself to him again in his final moments not to make it harder for you but out of respect for Ludwig. It wants you to put him down as a warrior and not as a beast. This is also where it takes its opprtunity to demonstrate its power to you and make you go "I want that"
For someone who has never played Bloodborne, (tho i have played Darksouls 1 and 3) i thought i was just going to see a grotesque monster get killed, but when that second phase hit and that music dropped I was in awe. From Software always amazes me with their boss designs

I am back to Bloodborne myself it's just the atmosphere of this game and cosmic horror, the architecture of Yharnam is too good. I also enjoyed Demon Souls but I hated certain mechanics like human and ghost form, plus having balancing this stupid World Tendency.
I like bloodborne a lot better then elden ring but I think the godskin apostles OST sounds pretty similar to Ludwig but in a good way. Not that it’s the same melody but the feeling is kind of the same with the rhythm and beat drop.
Ive been stuck on this boss since the DLC came out. I took a small break and beat both Dark Souls 1 and 3 before beating this boss. The hardest boss battle i've ever come across and you make it look easy... Also i refuse to summon people, it goes against my manly pride xD
It's not that he makes it look easy, he had a lot of HP and good resistance. You can see he made many mistakes. That being said, this boss and the Orphan were probably the toughest in Bloodborne.
I know it's an old post, but damn...Manus and Kalameet (DS1) are a lot harder than all Bloodborne bosses together. And don't even let me mention Raime the Fume Knight (DS2).
Meh... Not for me. Bloodborne in general is easier compared to Dark Souls; stamina depletes too slowly, you move too quickly, blood vials can be used instantly ecc. Overall, is an user-friendly game. Ludwig is hard, for sure, but still a Bloodborne boss.

To me, the best boss fight in video game history. I was underleveled in NG+ and it was like hitting a brick wall. But I had to defeat him. No other encounter in my years of playing video games has given me the sense of pure, visceral life and death combat like this one. The music and amazing visual design doesn't hurt. I will forever remember my battle with Ludwig.
Definitely one of my all time favorite Bosses ever. The phase transition cutscene is truly inspiring to me because Ludwig is in his lowliest state and then he picks himself up and regains part of his humanity to fight his final duel with a fellow hunter not as a beast, but as a man. It inspires me whenever I feel down and out to try and pick myself up and keep going to better myself. "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. When you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you"

He probably didn't. Either he had a sepertate character to try out the boss or he managed to manually saved his save. I mean, he knew exactly what to do against most of the attacks without having seen them before. No one can be this good.
I don't much like the fromsoft games as much as every other human on the planet, but one thing I can't take away from it is how incredible the soundtracks are.

Non-fedora-wearing version: We see this pathetic monster recover its humanity and become the hunter Ludwig once again, so Djura was right, "Those you hunt are not beasts, they're people... in time you'll come to understand." Plus, not being a Souls player myself, as I understand it, the Moonlight Greatsword this dude uses is kind of a recurring thing in the series and there was that hype for it when it showed up in this. Kinda like Patches, who's also a recurring jackass in the Souls series.

I mean the first games of the series are being questioned which timeline it should take place as it make no sense to be before the time of Armored Core 4 as it takes place in the future. And Armored Core 4 takes place somewhere in the 21st century(21st being 2010 and later I don't know why this existed)

One of the best fights in the game, thematically speaking. Being one of the most hideous examples of someone mutated by the Old Blood, Ludwig looks like he lives in constant agony. It is only through the cleansing power of the Hunter's fury that Ludwig is awakened, and given a final chance to die as the man he was rather than the monster he became. In this way, you save Ludwig and release him from his pain.
I remember when i fought him, honestly i believe this is the best boss from software ever made, the whole lore about this boss is truly amazing and i legit felt bad defeating him

Ludwig was responsible for most of my deaths, a staggering 43 attempts to get him down, the second most was laurence at 21 attempts and I don't know if I got lucky but I got Orphan of Kos in just 8 attempts.
Ok, i'm playing bloodborne again, I decided do it on the ng +... Well, the things were working fine, beat blood starved beast, father gascoigne, vicar amelia without any problems (BSB brought me some problems, as usual (rs), but in my second try I did it)... And well, after killer Cigar amelia i decided go to the dlc... If in the normal game I died about 3 times (I guess) to ludwig on ng +... OMFG, this guy was a pain in the ass... Took me about 4 hours and several times dying to this asshole... He is more agressive than anything that I've ever seen, ok, I already knew it... But, Looks like his HP simply double (?) Idk , but seems that he has much more life (even to the ng+, it's ridiculous how more hp he has)

When I fought Ludwig for the first time the into gave me straight goosebumps and his story almost made me cry. When he finally comes to his senses and regains some sense of humanity it's truly a triumph. We've all been there, utterly consumed by something. At least he was able to come out of it and die with dignity. What a master stroke.

I'd most definitely classify Bloodborne as being in the horror rpg genre, which sadly never took off and hadnt seen an addition to said genre really since the ps2 age with, I think, Shadow Hearts.
I would absolutely classify Bloodborne under a horror genre. aside from the aspects of cosmic horror inspired by Lovecraft (which are arguably the most unsettling), some of the body horror in this game is *beyond* grotesque. many of these designs are absolutely disgusting, I mean for the love of god, Ludwig has a second head which is a mouth comprised of a few teeth, and endless rows of eyeballs descending into the throat.

it is more of a show than a challenge. It's like rewarding you for pulling off phase 1 and survive into phase 2. Instead become more feral, he regains his humanity and fights you with stances of human, not a beast.
Same goes for Laurence, to be honest. His legless phase 3 is more of a show of his misery to make us feel pity for him. It is easier than his phase 1

The best part about the Holy Blade is that it feels almost like a reward for defeating his first phase; you’ve beaten him in his beast form, and now you’re rewarded with an epic, full-on absolute blast of a battle between two god tier hunters.

@Sakunta Dharma I disagree. The Cleric beast was most likely a church hunter that served under Ludwig given the item he dropped, therefore one must beat the cleric beast with pretty much any weapon of the healing church such as the Holy Blade or Kirkhammer to do this challenge and succeed.

The lyrics of the ost are being sung from the perspective of the moonlight greatsword. Based on its choice of words, It revealed itself to him again in his final moments not to make it harder for you but out of respect for Ludwig. It wants you to put him down as a warrior and not as a beast. This is also where it takes its opprtunity to demonstrate its power to you and make you go "I want that"

I am back to Bloodborne myself it's just the atmosphere of this game and cosmic horror, the architecture of Yharnam is too good. I also enjoyed Demon Souls but I hated certain mechanics like human and ghost form, plus having balancing this stupid World Tendency.
I like bloodborne a lot better then elden ring but I think the godskin apostles OST sounds pretty similar to Ludwig but in a good way. Not that it’s the same melody but the feeling is kind of the same with the rhythm and beat drop.

Ive been stuck on this boss since the DLC came out. I took a small break and beat both Dark Souls 1 and 3 before beating this boss. The hardest boss battle i've ever come across and you make it look easy... Also i refuse to summon people, it goes against my manly pride xD
It's not that he makes it look easy, he had a lot of HP and good resistance. You can see he made many mistakes. That being said, this boss and the Orphan were probably the toughest in Bloodborne.
Yeah, the Orphan is the hardest but in my all of the soulsborne games ive played Darkeater Midir was the hardest ive ever thought.
I know it's an old post, but damn...Manus and Kalameet (DS1) are a lot harder than all Bloodborne bosses together. And don't even let me mention Raime the Fume Knight (DS2).

Meh... Not for me. Bloodborne in general is easier compared to Dark Souls; stamina depletes too slowly, you move too quickly, blood vials can be used instantly ecc. Overall, is an user-friendly game. Ludwig is hard, for sure, but still a Bloodborne boss.

To me, the best boss fight in video game history. I was underleveled in NG+ and it was like hitting a brick wall. But I had to defeat him. No other encounter in my years of playing video games has given me the sense of pure, visceral life and death combat like this one. The music and amazing visual design doesn't hurt. I will forever remember my battle with Ludwig.
Definitely one of my all time favorite Bosses ever. The phase transition cutscene is truly inspiring to me because Ludwig is in his lowliest state and then he picks himself up and regains part of his humanity to fight his final duel with a fellow hunter not as a beast, but as a man. It inspires me whenever I feel down and out to try and pick myself up and keep going to better myself.

Ah. Ludwig. The most painfully awesome experience of my life. And the cutscenes add. And I'm impressed (but mainly me being l a scrublord) at how you accomplished victory in one try.
He probably didn't. Either he had a sepertate character to try out the boss or he managed to manually saved his save. I mean, he knew exactly what to do against most of the attacks without having seen them before. No one can be this good.

Non-fedora-wearing version: We see this pathetic monster recover its humanity and become the hunter Ludwig once again, so Djura was right, "Those you hunt are not beasts, they're people... in time you'll come to understand." Plus, not being a Souls player myself, as I understand it, the Moonlight Greatsword this dude uses is kind of a recurring thing in the series and there was that hype for it when it showed up in this. Kinda like Patches, who's also a recurring jackass in the Souls series.
That and the fight is FUCKING TOUGH, one of the most exhilarating and invigorating in video games in general, ever.

I mean the first games of the series are being questioned which timeline it should take place as it make no sense to be before the time of Armored Core 4 as it takes place in the future. And Armored Core 4 takes place somewhere in the 21st century(21st being 2010 and later I don't know why this existed)

One of the best fights in the game, thematically speaking. Being one of the most hideous examples of someone mutated by the Old Blood, Ludwig looks like he lives in constant agony. It is only through the cleansing power of the Hunter's fury that Ludwig is awakened, and given a final chance to die as the man he was rather than the monster he became. In this way, you save Ludwig and release him from his pain.

Ludwig was responsible for most of my deaths, a staggering 43 attempts to get him down, the second most was laurence at 21 attempts and I don't know if I got lucky but I got Orphan of Kos in just 8 attempts.
I died to the Living Failures over 15 times, however I beat Orphan of Kos on my 4th attempt, I don't understand myself hahaha
Ok, i'm playing bloodborne again, I decided do it on the ng +... Well, the things were working fine, beat blood starved beast, father gascoigne, vicar amelia without any problems (BSB brought me some problems, as usual (rs), but in my second try I did it)... And well, after killer Cigar amelia i decided go to the dlc...
If in the normal game I died about 3 times (I guess) to ludwig on ng +... OMFG, this guy was a pain in the ass... Took me about 4 hours and several times dying to this asshole... He is more agressive than anything that I've ever seen, ok, I already knew it... But, Looks like his HP simply double (?) Idk , but seems that he has much more life (even to the ng+, it's ridiculous how more hp he has)
That sword must have high durability. He be slamming that thing.
