- Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic Football Club have big ambitions to reach the SPFL. They're currently top of the Lowland League (Scotland's fifth tier of football) and could be playing league football next season.
Based close to Edinburgh, I took a look around their stadium (New Dundas Park) and heard all about the club from treasurer, Brendan Parkinson.
Fun fact: the first James Bond (Sir Sean Connery) played for Bonnyrigg Rose!!!

Will we see Bonnyrigg Rose in the SPFL next season?
maybe
I can see Bonny doing a Kelty and Cove. These teams will do well in the Scott Championship/premiership.
Kelty last year Bonnyrigg this year
STIRLING ALBION
Hopefully, played for Bonnyrigg my whole life so would be class to see them go up
Growing up watching Scottish football, specifically my team Stirling Albion it always baffled me as to the fact that we could never be relegated. Then came the fateful day that East Stirlingshire were the first to drop out of the league system. It just felt right, not just because they tended to finish around 10th every year but also because that's just how football should work imo. A chance for teams better than those above to take their place. It's good to see the improvements to our system!
Brilliant video as per usual!
Really appreciate these lower league videos. Best of luck to Bonnyrigg Rose for the remainder of the season.
Said it before I’ll say it again your coverage of Scottish football is amazing bro thank you 👍🏻
Really hope Bonnyrigg Rose go up. Very much enjoyed my visit to New Dundas Park in October on the Scottish Hop.
Glad they're making improvements to the ground. A seated stand and a flatter pitch and they'll be a real asset if they come up. Hope they do it.
My Hometown! Thanks for this mate I messaged you a while back on Instagram about doing Bonnyrigg Rose as I live in Australia and follow your content often so thank you
Was great to see the club and the surrounding areas particularly the view from polton hall
Keep it up mate
Thanks 🌹👍🏼
Excellent job once again Sam ... and great fun fact about 007 too !!
Awesome seeing some coverage for a team that I used to play for in their youth system when I was younger. Keep up the good work.
Great video again 👏 you bring these clubs alive to us
A proper pyramid system in Scottish football is about a century overdue but fantastic to see it in place finally. Now it's time for automatic relegation from League 2 and more slots between the Lowland League and West of Scotland / East of Scotland and South of Scotland Leagues rather than the current ridiculous one up and one down. Definitely agree with what was said in the video - not everyone has found their level yet and that's because the current pyramid isn't fluid enough thus far.
Agreed the system needs modernizing
A proper pyramid system isn’t in place. We need a total revamp of every single league
Also think the lower divisions need expanded. possibly every division. Horrendously boring for the club's trapped in league 2 having to visit the same grounds twice a season for years now.
@@finfamous2546 Problem is that clubs keep voting against that idea
The ironic thing is that it would probably benefit most of the clubs in the SPFL to have automatic relegation from tier 4. The reason being that most clubs could easily wind up bottom of league 2 at some point, after all Brechin were a Championship level team only a couple of years before they winded up bottom of League 2. So what I am saying is that most SPFL teams are ultimately in danger right now of ending up in a play-off in the next few years with a Bonnyrigg, Talbot, Pollok, Darvel, Clydebank, Fraserburgh, etc - all clubs well capable of winning a play-off against them. Automatic relegation also means automatic promotion for the winning team from tier 5 - this may ultimately benefit a lot of current SPFL teams in the long run. Trouble is, most teams can;t see beyond their current position but beleive me, a lot of them will rue the fact that there's no automatic promotion from tier 5, when they end up competing at that level in a few seasons time.
Excellent videos. Great learning about these smaller clubs.
Great vid Sam. Fantastic to see the best of the non-league clubs finally getting the chance to get into the SPFL.
Loved the story , my respect for Bonnyrigg fc . There is nothing more beautiful in football than the communitiy of fans in unison with team players playing with heart , this is why i like the small clubs . A few big clubs may still have that community & heart but unfortunately so many big clubs now being distant from fans through bad ownership and of course over paid players with no heart...13 pieces of silver comes to mind .
Nice trip to Bonnyrigg Rose. Enjoyed it and off course they are in League two now. Good for them..
I do all my FM saves with Scottish teams. Love it.
Another great video from a englishman (Bristol) keep up the great work. Mark
Well that was spot on. Thought you'd make a video of the play-off games though. 😃
Quality content m8
Just got the Bonnyrigg rose 🌹 job on FM23 and knew your channel was the best place to find out about them 👍
some time back i asked you to make a video of bonnyrigg rose. thankyou. I live iin wales but have followed the rose since the junior league days via you tube. thanks again
work just round the corner, great supported little club
Well that's the first time I've heard the Pentland Hills described as snow capped mountains, it did make me chuckle! On the southern slopes of the Pentlands is the town of Penicuik which coincidentally is where the Bonnyigg Rose manager lives. We have a club here (Penicuik Athletic) that play in the East of Scotland league and a thriving youth set up in Penicuik Athletic Youth F.C. The Athletic's stadium is easy to find, it's in the public park on Carlops Road.
I visited in October last year and uploaded a video to my UA-cam channel in November. A stunning place to watch football.
I am one of the huge respective supporters of the Scottish football ever since I was a child and like all the respective clubs from the top till lowest leagues daily and ever, good friends!!!For sure,I am and must be planning to buy all the respective kits of them and ever be watching all the respective matches, good friends!!!:-D
Love your enthusiasm Oh GREAT ONE
Wait until the West teams are ready to go up then we will see who the next teams to do a kelty nice club bonnyrigg only problem I see is the pitch is a bit squinty 😀
still think the pyramid system needs work but its a good start hope its just win league and you are in
Agreed. I will add that I would want to see only 3 top divisions and then the regionals. Also more colt teams in the lower leagues. They seem to working well for the smaller clubs just now.
Nice throw with the darts 😉
They haven’t really broke the mould Kelty and cove have had money thrown at them, but agree England has the right idea. My cousin played for Bonnyrigg for over 10 years when they played in the juniors, can’t see them being able to play at Dundas if they come up though.
Maybe, but they have used it wisely. Made sure that they had the facilities necessary for senior football,as well as a good team on the park. Got it right both on the park and behind the scenes. Good luck to them.
Your videos is what keep me going everyday
Great videos 🚜🚜🚜
Glad to hear you're still enjoying them mate! Lots more coming soon :) All the best
@@FootyAdventures 🤗
@@10mibrahim that and posting snarky comments, I see you everywhere 🤣
We've been playing fantastic this season we should hopefully go up only need 4 wins for the league 🌹
Great job covering the lower league clubs and giving them well earned recognition some of these clubs are the heart beat of the community from a dumbarton supporter
@footyadventures Get yourself along to Tranent Juniors. Well run, Small town club going places. In a superb 3 team title race with Penicuik and Linlithgow rose in the east of Scotland premier league for promotion to the lowland league. If Tranent win their game in hand, all 3 teams are within 3 points of eachother. Tranent to play Linlithgow twice still, maybe aim for one of those top of the table clashes
Great video my local team
You love to see it🌹
On the brick wall. Andy Kelly who won the cup as a player & manager. He was the toughest trainer of players you could get. At the beginning of the season, he would make you run up the hill at training until you were physically sick. He would growl “Get the mince and tatties out of you” as if to infer you were overweight. Also saw Bobby (Shultz) Reid up there too. Extremely tough defender. He would tackle his granny if a cup was up for grabs.
Yessssss
You should go to Bo'ness United. Big rivals with Bonnyrigg and one of the biggest clubs from the East juniors.
All these smaller clubs as well those in leagues 1 and 2, could transform so much with maybe a couple million for stadium and facilities upgrades.
These guys selling Brick's to help fund stadium upgrades would do so much with maybe a million.
they do need to improve Scottish non-league as in Aberdeen Banks o dee have won the league the past 4 times (since 15-16) and they are first by a mile they need to get promoted but it's just too difficult.
They’ll get to the Highland League this year. East Craigie and Loch Ness haven’t got their licenses so they’ll only need to face Fort William which should be comfortable for BOD (no disrespect to Fort)
That’s good
I wonder why Bonnyrigg have a fairly recent Donny Rovers shirt on the wall? Bonnyrigg have to make the most of their opportunities to make the SPFL because, as you mentioned, there are some quality teams in the WpS and EoS coming into the Lowland and pushing up the standard of that league.
I think the whole pyramid model needs to change in Scotland. To make the league more competitive, more interesting to watch and less complicated to follow Is ff they scrap one of the Highland/lowlands leagues and merge into one big league where the top two teams go up automatically and the bottom two of their respective leagues from the premier to League 2 will be relegated.
Logistics for the small clubs could be a cost that's too much though bud. I think regional leagues is better on the finances. They can stillake it better though. Scrap league 2 and make the remaining top 3 leagues slightly bigger so not playing 4 games against same opponent. The league cup now presents more games for clubs in the groups stages, could do that with the Scottish cup and turn the league back to a knockout tourney.
Last time I went I don't think they had the kebab pies. I'm supposed to be going back at some point. Cannot wait to get a pie
Please do a Lanarkshire based groundhopping video,do teams like Wishaw,Bellshill Athletic or Lesmahagow Juniors
For the last 20 years I thought Buckie Thistle would be a league club. Maybe soon.
They are looking good for the HL this season
I support Lochee United and I have a lot of respect for Bonnyrigg. A well-run club, no rich backers but just hard work getting them there. I'd love to see them in the SPFL, so good luck to them!
And yes, there are plenty of improvements to be made to the pyramid. I'm glad we've finally got a pyramid covering all of Scotland, but it needs to improve further. Especially automatic relegation from the SPFL and more relegation spots from the Lowland League.
Completely agree that the Scottish pyramid system will be to be improved. Plus the SPFL should reconstruct the leagues
Hopefully you will come back to my local football team, Glenafton Athletic's ground, you came before
Hello. From Dublin... Go. To. A. Dublin. Derby... You. Can't. Beat. The atmosphere
Name checked 👍
I’ll chelebrate with vodka martini, shaken, not shtirred
Maybe the solution is a Scottish League 3 with automatic relegation to the Lowland and Highland with play offs for the 2nd and 3rd place sides in each league to play 3rd bottom of SFL3 in a play off final for the 3rd promotion spot.
Mon eh rose 🌹
How long have England had the National League promotion and relegation system in place for? For long time it was kinda a closed shop or very restrictive promotion/relegation system
It was in the mid to late 80's, from memory the first game to go up automatically as champions was Scarborough, although there were a few seasons where the team that finished top of the Conference didn't go up as their ground wasn't up to Football League standards. Two up and two down came in around 20 years ago.
Circa 1987
I remember hibs played bonnyrigg at tynecastle in the Scottish and hibs won 8-1
Great video again will you do the world cup when it comes 🚜🚜🚜🚜
Who knows! I'd love to if I got the opportunity!
Are you going to forthbank tonight to see stirling albion play fofar
How to improve the Scottish pyramid system? Have the 10th placed League 2 side automatically relegated, then the Highland/Lowland winners play off to go up? Otherwise you'll have to have 2 up, 2 down and I can't imagine the SPFL clubs having that... despite teams like Bonnyrigg Rose, Brora etc deserving their chance in the SPFL. Lower down though, its the same mess as in England?
Hope we see another Fife team going into thr SPFL, Cowdenbeath looking doomed IMO. How about Glenrothes FC? A sizeable town that probably deserves to have a team in the SPFL and hopefully if they go up, a new Fife Derby within a few years.
A few years is wildly optimistic! Glenrothes are in tier 7, they don't have floodlights therefore no SFA licence so lots of work to do on and off the pitch before they can even think about getting into the Lowland League let alone the SPFL.
What game you going next?
Mon the rose
does that pitch have a huge slope ? or was it looking like that on the camera
Nitten Star supporter then?
Yes. Slope.
Yes, huge slope width ways. That will need fixed if they go up you would think
I live in Bonnyrigg
👍🏻
What are the stars on the tracksuit top?
Winning the Scottish Junior Cup.
Donner kebab pies with chilli sauce though 😍
They couldn't learn a lot from the huge financial discrepencies in English football. Let's face it the reason the too 6 in England have much better chance of winning trophies is because a huge financial gulf was allowed to develop with other clubs
It is only in the last 20 odd years that English non-league clubs were allowed promotion, then it was only 1 club, now its 2, one auto place the other via a playoff., it really was a closed shop, dependent on Votes or a club going bust as to whether a non league club "joined" the league, The conference now is harder than that of league 2, a lot of clubs have budgets in excess of their "league" counterparts.
It`s actually 35 years (1987). Ironically, Scarborough, the first club to gain automatic promotion, went out of existance 20 years later.
@@georgerubypoppy1063 Thanks for the correction, i recall stevenage missing out because of ground, then going up. Yet the conference had to accept, can't remember the club that came down despite them having a ground that was not Conf Standard, let alone league. :)
Treasurer of the club saying "you can do the maths on that" lmao
He's on camera and is probably a bit flustered. I'm pretty sure the guy could do the math on it in normal circumstances.....
Will you go to a match at Pittodrie soon again?
Kelty hearts BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank God for them as the Lowland League could well have shot themselves in the foot by allowing Rangers and Celtic B teams in as if either finished top there would be no Lowland League representative in the playoffs
Wrong, the SPFL and LL rules allow the best non-B team to go into the playoffs even if Celtic or Rangers won it.
16 TEAM PREMIER LEAGUE
16 TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
16 HIGHLAND LEAGUE
16 TEAM LOWLAND LEAGUE
REGIONAL LEAGUES NORTH - SOUTH - EAST - WEST
HOME AND AWAY
2 UP - 2 DOWN
3RD BOTTOM Vs 3RD TOP
INTRODUCTION FOR "B" TEAMS
KEEP IT ALL SIMPLE! PLAYING EACH OTHER 4 TIMES A SEASON IS BORING! CAN EVEN PLAY UP TO 7 TIMES WITH CUPS AND REPLAYS! BOOOOOOOOOOORING! MARKET THE LOCAL RIVALRIES DUNDEE DERBY, AYRSHIRE DERBY ETC BETTER
Your theory is flawed. 16 team leagues, means only 30 games each. The season would be finished in March. Now that would be boring.
Where do you put the boundary for your 16 team Highland? You would have to promote half the current Highland league teams in level 5 to level 3 in your set-up, while demoting many Lowlands to level 4 into your regionals. Clubs are not voting for that. For example, why should Rothes get promoted 2 levels, while Albion Rovers get demoted 2 levels?
Mighty fairydean rovers tucked them away in the cup tonight tho 🔴⚫️
Hi Sam - emailed you last week about a spare ticket I have for an event in Scotland next week you might be interested in making a video about (it's not a match but still would make a good video). Not sure if you've seen the email but the ticket is still there if you are interested, I've not been able to find anyone who is able to get the time off work to be able to go.
Already forgotten the name
Go to Peterhead
The highland league and lowland league winners should go up automatically and bottom 2 of scottish league should go down
No . Highland teams are too strong .
1 from Brora Buckie Fraserburgh and Brechin . Hope its not the last one mentioned
🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Pish
Hope they lose on Saturday v us,Bo'ness Utd
Too many pointless teams on Scotland.
