My 5th live dead show. 1st row center compliments of a music manager friend of the family very well connected. Remember like yesterday; probably due to doses. First set with Bo Diddley was cool, but i was there for the dead. What an amazing night. Donna's first appearance I believe added a real nice vibe. You can hear for yourself, but highlights for sure was my only time seeing Smokestack & Lovelight. Jerry on pedal steel for looks like rain. I was literally no more than 15 feet from Jerry and during Brown Eyed Woman was dancing my behind off with ear to ear smiles; Jerry looks directly at me and also smiles wide and breaks into a rocking lead. Just a great time all around. Returned for the next night show and the journey continued. May Dick RIP; but why oh why did he have to break up so many shows at release was a huge mistake. This entire should should of been released on Dick's 30 and not just parts of it. That mistake was repeated throughout his tenure; oh well. Peace
Oh, how can I of forgotten to mention Sitting on Top of the World. Also, only time seeing that live. Awesome version. What a cool night. Thank you Wall of Sound for all your uploads. Much appreciation your way.
Peace is being Rolled back your way Terrapinonline
I've been a Deadhead since 1971. I've been to a lot of shows; I've listened to a lot of recordings of shows; but I haven't listened to every show! I've never listened to this show before today. But this just might be the greatest show I've ever listened to! Love this!
Have Mercy.......so very grateful
Hey Now it's the Gratefullest show ever
👍 They are in Hells Angels Forever too. Bo Diddly and Garcia on a big boat.
happy 51st deadhead anniversary to Larree. next year will be my 50th
This recording has become a Christmas time tradition for me. It's not really Christmas music, the same way Die Hard isn't really a Christmas movie 😆
"1958 was a hell of a year... I'm here to tell you all about it baby" Bo Diddley
I can't believe I never heard this AWESOME show!!! Thank you Wall of Sound for sharing!! 💖💖💖. Jamming under semi-quarantine again ~ dancing to the Dead and Bo Diddley ~ great therapy ☺️☀️🌟🙏🏻
this is rare, historic performance. i had no idea, blown away. 5 stars
just found it...wow!
Bo sounds amazing. As expected. This is one of the top best shows I have ever heard. Im floored. Thank you.
100%!! Jerry rocks!
It's amazing
This show is spooky good, I never felt the swampy devil blues so much than in this show especially Smokestack! Holy Cow !!!!
was a hells angels party so they made sure they were good that night!! lol
This is _really_ good...
Just goes to show, you don't ever know. Don't let someone else's review determine your listening adventure. Great recording! Happy 48th to this gem !
Thanks a bunch. What a great hump day or anyother day show 🙏🙏👍👍✌✌🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is the pinnacle of amazing
Listen to that jam that closes out Smokestack Lightning (1:50:36) and stay still, I fucking DARE you, holy crow
On it :)
Oh my god! So on point! This show is crackling!!!!
Starting about 1:58:45 to be exact
Man, they do get hot on Smokestack Lightnin' & seems to carry over into the following songs. I'm 62 now & have been a Deadhead most of my life, but Weir's "Looks Like Rain" is probably my least favorite Dead song of all time; probably the only one I can honestly say I don't enjoy. The lyrics are ridiculous! Alley cats don't "make love" --- it's more like "speed dating"!
@@thebishop1095 lol couldn't agree more
only dead version how sweet it is and dam good
Listened to this yesterday for my first entire 1 sitting playthrough of a show, will do again.
The name of the song ("I'm a Man") is 'Mannish Boy", by Howlin' Wolf. It is THEE original Rock N Roll joint. Before Chuck Berry, before Elvis - probably with the first model of Les Paul ever made.
*Muddy Waters
Cool!!! I love people that are into where the orig songs come from. A lot of Jerry's songs are old school back woods stuff, that hardly anyone has heard of. Its neat to explore music of all types. Peace N Love
@@rosebud1958 yes I was very fortunate to come across the Grateful Dead when I was 14 years old just starting to explore music. It led to me developing a love for the blues and country music. We used to sit and read the album covers and look at all the information while we listen to the music. And that's how we learned about Hank Williams and Marty Robbins and all the Blues Legends.
Really fortunate that I was exposed to that at a very early age I've spent the last 48 years listening to all the best of American music
@@charlesandrews2360 Thank you for sharing this story. I have a lot of fond memories of all the beautiful folks I met at shows. Glad I grew up when I did!! You as well. Kindest, loving, caring, sharing all they had with others. So Grateful!! We were young but had the utter most respect for one another!! Didn’t matter the color of ur skin. We are still loving n kind!!!!! But!!! Hey now!! We are not door mates that you can wipe ur dirty f ing feet on!!!! We are real n understand life now that we are still older.... even more now than then. I’m still a hippie chick, I will always lift up my fellow man!!! Not put down for his or her views. Knowledge is power!!! God the Father of all. Thank you!! 🙏❤️🙏❤️
@@rosebud1958 you always have a long nice comment for everyone sound like a real sweetheart. take care
I was at that show almost 49 years ago and remember it like yesterday with Pigpen and Bo Didley doing their stuff onstage
Also remember the the hells Angels hanging around Academy of Music on 14th street NYC. It was a great place for a show, approximately 2,500 seats
I was 16 and dropped acid for the 1st time while I was on the subway to the show , and didn't sleep the whole night
They were rockin that night and I remember Jerry was on the left side of the state in those days
i was in NYC then and saw many shows at the Fillmore East....always got in free with the band.....how the hell did i miss this? I love Bo. At least I saw him live in Central Park.
blow me away never heard this show fabulous
with an early embryonic 'looks like rain' with pedal steel and lesh harmony .. great year ...
Just found this on my B-Day, 10 years sooner. 1982. Well to the bar brothers be Good. Will feel the rest when i get home. Not many Hells around here but lots of Vogos!!!
Gee, gosh, & golly. A much coveted cassette!❤🎉😊
Are you lonely for me baby? Holy cow! Jerry's vocals are on fire!!! This show is now in my top 3!!!!
You've piqued my curiosity - what are the other 2? :)
Right now Dicks Picks Pembroke FL, One from the Vault, now the Bo Diddley show! Can believe I have never herd this!
Mister Charlie is the Dead’s most underrated tune.
Except for Easy Wind, but yeah.
Amen brother. Can't get enough of it. All of Pig Pens songs were phenomenonal.
@@michaelsteding2939 Yes yes yes !... Mr Charlie is my most loved song and I cherish all Pig Pen's songs too. Actually, Pig Pen's years and the 90's are the periods I like the most
Always did love me a Mr. Charlie! A real fun boogie-woogie dancing tune!! I loved Viola Lee Blues in the same kinda boogie vibe... shit!! It's hard to pick faves when there were so many great tunes×, right? I'm so thankful for every show I was lucky enough to see...miss Jerry ALL THE TIME!! Sometimes I just yell to the heavens, "I miss you Jerry!!!"
The notion of being "most underrated" is strange if you give it a second's thought. "Most underrated" by whom, exactly?
Heavenly pedal steal on looks like rain. Great recording. Thank you
WOW is this Special! ThankYouThankYou WALL OF SOUND!
So freakin Bitchin!!! Thanks W O S!!!!! Wooooooooo!! good stuff!! Peace
Wooow. Fantastic! Perfect!
Pure awesomeness! Thank you kindly for sharing.
Awesome show.Fantastic.
What a band ❤! Thank you.⚡️❤
OK, my heart melted on LLR. Soo sweet and poignant.
Thank You Charlie.
Thanks indeed Charlie! Note that I am not him. I'm just some guy who downloads his shows, slaps on a picture, and puts them up here :) He did the real work.
How did I miss this. Reminds me of the Doors doing Roadhouse Blues with John Lee Hooker. Also found on YT.
Grateful Dead and Bo Diddley playing in NYC for the Hell's Angels legal defense fund? There has to be footage of this show somewhere.
lmk if u find it
We love to see the footage too
I was an extra in the horrible "horror" movie Rockula. It's the only time I saw Bo Diddley live.
wow thanks awesome
This is so, so good. I can't believe I never knew it existed before. I mean, fuck the Hells Angels, but still, wow. Grateful Dead with Bo Diddley. Sublime. Blissed out listening. Thank you so much for posting.
Way kool, GD Always respectful to our roots.
I agree. Hell’s Angels are a disgusting scourge of our twisted underground society that ignores laws and proper decorum for drunken drug-fueled anarchy. Lock em up!
Hells Angels are the epitome of grateful dead spirit. Laws? Why give someone that doesn't like you that power over you? Wake up!
@@hobgoblin6659 I think it was the spirit of the Hell's Angels that helped the Grateful Dead decide not to play at Altamont Speedway the night that the the 1960s officially ended
@@charlesandrews2360 the
Hells Angels were at every show in every city I’ve seen the Grateful Dead. They were Law & Order, and everything was just fine.
This is inspirational, thanks for putting this out there , sounds great, it's cookin for sure ⚡

great the dead were probably geeked to play with bo
Is it Phil who is talking between sets? He prompts people to begin "partying" after each set, and then before they play Casey Jones, he dedicates the song to: "Those of us who are into it." -- As if the whole crowd is just snorting coke up in Academy of Music. That probably is what it was like.
The same venue where Lou Reed's "Live" and "Rock and Roll Animal" were recorded...
This is like sofa king good!
sofa king lol loved that joke as a kid
@@jacknotreallyjackstrawfrom7109 🙂
was first dead show with a girl from the neighborhood that we went to together making out in the balcony and the songs had that swampy creedence sugar magnolia vibe ... that relationship went to sept 1980 and our last show together in some town in maine (? - mushrooms) .. always loved the academy...
This is the good stuff, right here 🎸🎹🥁🤹♀️🎪
The only time the dead played How Sweet It Is...❤🔥
Yeah...Yeah...Yes..!
Brown Eyed Women starts at 01:44:00
Ilove it and it sreds!?
Shreds dumb 🤳 it's awesome family members music 🎼🎶✨🎼🎤🎸 you know yeah buddy!?
What a great show! I don't think I've ever heard it. How is that?!
😊
Parts of this and the show on the 28th are on Dick's Picks Vol. 30 released in '03, but nothing like the experience of a complete show. This rips
Is Bo's band with them too? I can't really here Weir. Jerry yes. This is sick!
"Daddy whip cream" Classic.
Just heard that part! Yes, I love this show.
Good ole Grateful Dead! Screw around for 5 minutes at 3:03:26 fixing a string and tuning up. Audience gets completely bored. Then the band tears the house down with Love Light. How well I remember those ragged but right shows! Somehow, they got more "professional" over the years.
Yeah.
wOw WoW hEy HeY
Wow, in the first song, towards the end, Bo Didley sounds like a filthy chid. 😊
this was featured on facebook
So, Bo says (At about 14:00) "the UNCOMFORTABLE John Lee Hooker" right? Incomparable? I dunno. Love this show (and John Lee and Bo and all the boys in the band)!
"you wanna play something fast?"
Correction: "You guys want to play something fast?"
If you play this track on any of it's songs with a playback speed of 1.25 it makes the music sound better with a nice fast, but not to fast, feel.
You should say "when I play them back at a different speed I like them" speak for yourself ...
Dude
Oh Yeah This Is? Creg😊
We all know who ya are!!!! Hello my friend!!!
if I am not mistaken the first set is Bo Diddly with his band, I do not hear the dead anywhere in the set
Clark Kent the drums sound like the dead imo
@@Bearschoice naaa they are not. no dead just bo diddley
It's the Dead by all accounts.
That is 100% Phil on bass, Jerry on guitar, Billy on drums and Bo Dudley on guitar. Keith on piano as well as Pig on organ. The only dead member I don’t hear is Bobby.
@@JeizonSam I always found the most boring Dead to be Bob 'Beach boy' Weir's, as great a rhythm guitarist as he is for the Dead. He has some good songs but 90% of the time if the Dead are just being mediocre it is Bob leading them. That is why I love Pig pens era (1968 to 1972) and Jerry's soulful jazz rock stuff from 'Blues for Allah' late 75, to 79 before his crippling stroke so weakened him. Bob is just another country rock star when others do it better, Allman Brother, The Outlaws, Creedance Clearwater Revival etc,. As leader in the 80's and later the Dead were too mellow and nostalgic. I mean come on. 'Alabama get away' just cannot be compared to the really great creative stuff like this. OR LIVE DEAD, or Blues for Allah etc. Give me raw soul acid rock. too many easy going 'good times' music can get real DULL!
Get the Fuck outa Here‼️. Where can i get a Time Machine - hold me back 😵💫.
I got one!!!! It's called the grateful dead!!!! Transports me back to better times every time I hear them !!!!!!!!!!!
@@emrysdavies1215 Yes Indeed - I go back often - my first show was in 1981 (SLC, UT) 🌹
If that ain't the shit.
Donna hurts my ears.

The Dead screwed her with no in ear support. She is Muscle Shoals royalty. Funny that a "metalhead" ears hurt listening to anything.

Happy birthday 🎊🎂🎁!!!
First time listening, what an eclectic ( even for the Dead) show. One of the best American music representations ever
This was the last night of a 4 night run at the Academy Of Music which was a rather seedy place to see a concert. Take my word that is was an epic stay for the Dead.. Add Bo in there and you get what was MAGIC......
This was actually part of a full week 7 nite run. This show was added after the first 6 were scheduled and sold out and yes the band had a odd to say the least relationship with the angels..From NYC they headed to Europe for possibly their best tour ever. These were also the last shows ever in NYC with the late, great Pigpen who although pretty sick at this point,he would die March 8 1973,still gave it to us with all he had...the true heart and soul of the band.Never the same without him....Also after this run at the Academy the 5 man addition of the Allman Brothers had a 5 or 6 nite run too. The place was a little run down but we saw msny, many, great shows there.

Too bad they did not play together more often. Great music!
The entire show is, ....can't think of the words. Anyway, Bo Diddley and Smokestack Lightnin' were the highlights for me. Man, I thank you Wall of Sound for being so generous with these shows. They highlight my day, and all the troubles going on in this world disappear for a while. Keeps me going. Thanks.
So, Just exactly what did Bo Diddley eat that night, any guesses??? I'll take two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stand out tracks; Hey Bo Diddley, I'm a man, Smokestack Lightning. Bertha, Mr Charlie, Turn on your Lovelight.. The whole gig, all three sets are great!
This Smokestack Lightning will change your life. Strip naked and turn up the volume. 1:50:36
@@WallofSound65 I am right now man! indeed I record my own acid rock stuff best naked. I am not joking too, Freaks are the best. Love me some Doors, Dead and Parliament Funkadelic with the black Jerry that is the good Clinton; George Clinton.and Pee Funk! My step brother was a dead roadie in the mid 70's and made me understand how GREAT Ron McKernan is. 'Bear's choice' being a top LP along with Skulls and Roses and LIVE Dead. Also the French gig and its Hard to Handle just WOWee! The 80's Dead was not my thing. Too much Bob and 'mellow'. But Jerry's band I saw like 30 times and with my lovely Swedish wife. I was just telling my son Sean that we must smoke something and get down with the Dead. It was great you responding like that, it made my night! Love the later Blues for Allah material and gigs from 1976 to thru 79 shone too. Poor Jerry was never quite the same after his stroke. Like Captain Beefheart once said. 'Aaah Love Aaacid'. Remember blue dragons blotter from Berkeley??? Good memories. Today I trip on good hashish. Little smoke leads to big smoke. Peace, love a long life and health to you sir. Love from Sweden, the land of Vikings and beautiful women!
Ah the night Miles Davis played second on the bill to the Dead.. John McLaughlin on guitar, Chick Corea, Billy Cobham on drums, etc they blew the roof off Winterland.
Miles talks about opening for the Dead once in his Autobiography. And do does Phil in his "Searching For The Sound" book.
I'm not sure if he played after the Dead at this show?
That's not this show. Miles opened for the Dead in 1970.
@@hotchd1 I need to find a recording ot that one, if there is one. Miles if from my home town - there is a wonderful memorial statue of him in our downtown. ~/; ) This show is amazing!
@@jmcdesign2928 If you're looking for the Miles set, it was released as a record called "Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West". He opened for the Dead twice on 4/9 and 4/10 1970. The 4/9 Dead set you can easily find on archive.org. As far as I know, the 4/10 show is not in circulation.
The "girls" ain't into this being told what to do thing... Good for them.
