I didn't know there was an expanded version of Either Or until just now
What I love about this song is that he not only creates an image with his lyrics, but the whole rhythm of the song makes me feel like I’m walking down Alameda.
I heared this while I was walking through the Alameda of Santiago de Chile 🇨🇱 . Xoxo elliott fans around the world
Xoxo@@ismaelgarrido1719
Alameda is the rich neighborhood in NE Portland…huge palatial homes, and just a few blocks from old Alberta district….the hood in those days
The last line of this song kills me every time.
elliott has the kind of voice you want to hug
I like to say I wish I could fill a bathtub up with his voice and soak for a few years
I get orbs in this room when listening to his music
Because he sounds like a wounded boy
Your music changed my life. Gave me hope when I had none. And most importantly helped me realize that I wasn't alone. That somebody had the same demons and hurdles. You helped me love myself. Thank you Elliott. Thank you so much
Still struggling here, but Elliot and a few choice others have helped me love and accept myself and my struggles as they are. :)
Right on. That's spot on man cheers
Dude your comment made me so happy. I'm glad someone feels the same way. Elliott Smith is literally my favorite music artist of all time. I'm happy that other people can share this amazing experience he left for us all to enjoy.
Almost cried in class reading this. Life just isn’t easy sometimes and puts a gun to your head after kicking your guts out your throat. Elliott always makes me feel better.
Goosebumps reading this. Love you all
Growing up in a crew who didn't run with this type of music I always felt out of place. You were a friend to me growing up elliot.
Your words brought me outta depression and helped me grow up to be the man I am now married. And have a beautiful daughter .
I will always remember taking the 3 metro rails and one bus to visit your Memorial mural in west LA. I wrote my thanks on the wall.
. Bless you for the wisdom
❤️

I would love to meet someone in life who appreciates and obsesses over his music as much as I do. I honestly believe there is not a single even mediocre song he wrote
Its like au 1:25 when he says " finish what you start" the next verse inturrupts and it says "what you sta-" genius...
one of many symbols in his music... awesome.
Damn, I've noticed it so many times before but could never connect!
i noticed that too!
Love this part
1:25 The absence of space between lyrics there is perfect
OddMuch I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed and appreciated that
There is a big space there. A whole beat to be exact, but i know what you mean :)
Everytime I hear this, it's summer all over again, I'm alone in my room, perfectly content in my own sadness. He really did sing to my soul... RIP sweet Elliot
Claire Scates Omg same! I think of my lonely summer when i listen to Elliott smith. I'd hit my juul in my room and listen to his music. ♡
How the fuck did Hitler fan boys end up here? Just because he loved art, doesn't mean he would automatically like this.
1. The joke was that disliking this was tantamount to the evil of Hitler.
2. Hitler banned all kinds of music you fucking ignorant ass Nazi's.
Same here. This album in particular reminds me so much of summer of 2019.
It's so strange cause to me i tend to associate this particular song to the month of december 2021 thus in general to wintertime, but thats just a place in my mind
he’s literally singing lullaby to us.. may he rip 😢
Nobody broke your heart, you broke your own. That is why I’ll always love him.
Elliott. Miss you buddy. Depression is a fucking monster. Still heartbreaking all these years later. Xo
hope ur okay
Hang in there, mate.
Songs like these are worth living for
I know exactly what you mean …
Eliott Smith has a place in my heart no one can replace. He has gotten me through life and I always come back to him like a warm blanket of comfort music. This song is one of those songs. I swear if I ever have a daughter, I would name her Alameda hands down. thank you elliott for being alive and spreading such happiness through your music.
Actually he isn't alive...
I'm going to tattoo it :) "Alameda" on my wrist
Madi Guith gee thanks because i didnt get the memo or read the gossip stories about the knife in the heart etc etc..... real good one there buddy hurhur
Can we have a daughter and name her Alameda? hurhurhur
harmonicsa In all seriousness though I've always thought Elliott's life would make a great novel. Throw some fiction in there and you got a bestseller. (you wouldn't even need the fiction)
brutal honesty translates in true art and it can open up the doors to creativity. if you open your eyes to the beauty and the horror in life you develop an appreciation for both. with that said it has a price especially if you are a good person who genuinely cares. to me, elliott smith's songs capture moods and they all make me happy because they are beautiful and they remind me that there are good people in the world. and for the rest ... your own pretension i never pay attention.
Possibly my favourite song ever. Was a 90's kid who heard Nevermind and The Bends fresh. Still this is astonishing for a one man band.
"if you're alone it must be you that wants to be apart"
Thats a nasty line, because its generally true.
one of the best memories I have, is from the time when I listen to Elliott in my headphones while walking the streets at night. I quit smoke about 5 years ago.
The way the base comes in at 1:30. Small trick, big magic. Than you Elliott, see you on the other side.
Damn I didn't even notice! It all just kinda melted together
I think (I may be wrong) that he recorded most of his own bass tracks. Especially on his final album. He was a drummer as well as a bassist, pianist, and guitarist. Hell, he probably played other instruments as well. Guitarists make the best bassists.
Totally agree, that instant when the bass starts has always given me goosebumps.
And the electric guitar arpeggio in the chorus. Amazing.
Love the drums on this one, nothing fancy, just solid.
And the wet snare sound has just the right amount of punch for the backbeat here. The drums always stood out to me too, it just suits the song so well.
A true visionary singer songwriter, to this day it makes me miserable that he had to pass so soon. RIP Elliott Peace &. Love
If you're alone, it must be you that wants to be apart.
this comment confuses me
@@buddypowe I guess it relates to introverted persona, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
@@awesomeianmarco being alone is observe the world in another plane
Yes, I live alone, always have, and prefer it. Not a misanthrope just tend to feel better when people aren't around. Such delicate beings. One word misplaced may never be revoked. Just a slow piling up.
The song is about someone who walks down Alameda and reflects on their life and relationships. The narrator describes this person as shuffling their deck of trick cards, suggesting that they use manipulation or deceit to get what they want from others. The person is depicted as a "precious only son" who thinks highly of themselves, but in reality they are the cause of their own heartbreak.
The narrator notes that the person is always thinking about their friends, but also maintains a constant state of suspense with them for their own protection. The person thinks that nobody has broken their heart, but the narrator disagrees, saying that they broke their own heart because they can't finish what they start.
The narrator also mentions that the person brushes off their nightmares, but the narrator still experiences them, suggesting that the person's actions have a negative impact on those around them. The narrator states that the person's first mistake was thinking that they could relate to others and that for a short time someone liked them, but now they are just pretentious and the narrator pays no attention to them.
In the end, the narrator suggests that the person's loneliness is by their own choice and that they want to be apart from others.

I've often focused on the sadness of his songs and related. nobody but him understood me. never quite understanding how folks mention him as their saving grace. Ten years later, I understand. in the same songs in which despairs he pushes back on those same hang ups, never quite allowing those thoughts defeat him. I wasn't ready to hear the hope in the same sounds. I am ready now.
I hope I can come to that point. In terms of songwriters he was one of the best but recently I've been finding it hard to appreciate his music. Before, it would be melancholy and introspective, but now it sometimes just fills me with dread. I think it's because of his tragic ending, his songs are filled with sadness and he either succumbed to it or was murdered despite doing nothing wrong.
“Nobody but him understood me” he never knew you.
Possibly his best lyrical content. Relates so universally. Miss the man
So this is quite a track for the unresolved soul
+Sullivan Dunn awesome
This always reminds me of simpler times when we used to get high on dope and think about life. Now a lot of these friends are gone and me - I'm still here, with almost 2 years of sobriety, but don't I wish every day to just go back and live what Elliot Smith wrote about...The epitome of talent and loneliness, this guy's art was.
You still sober?
Perfect for riding the bus home late at night, or else gloomily walking around your neighbourhood while smoking a joint.
@@Airdog456 I'm off the pandemic type vibe

Perfect soundtrack to polishing off a bottle of vodka by myself under the bridge at 3:00 A.M.
I walked in the rain with this song on repeat on my iPod for about 5 miles one day. Walked from downtown where I live back to my house. It was a good walk.
Perfect for shooting up heroin while stowing away in a boxcar that’s traveling through the Colorado mountains.
Idk why but i always listen to this the most during the holidays. It has a fall/winter feeling and it keeps me warm.
I always go on holiday to somewhere warm. I have enough cold weather where I live already
Always find my way back to Elliot this time of year
To me, the melody of the verses embody a wonky perspective and walk... "down Alameda" that I adore.
Lyrics seem so cryptic, but somehow the message is very clear.
what's the message?
Yeah what is it?
@@platotle2106 Getting over your ego:
"You walk down alameda shuffling your deck of trick cards over everyone
Like some precious only son"
Realizing it brings you more bad then good for simply feeling quickly disappearing facade of pride, which serves you as a defense mechanism:
"You walk down alameda looking at the cracks in the sidewalk
Thinking about your friends
How you maintain all them in a constant state of suspense"
"For one or two minutes she liked you
But the fix is in
You're all pretension
I never pay attention"
And eventually facing the reality:
"Nobody broke your heart
You broke your own because you can't finish what you start
Nobody broke your heart
If you're alone it must be you that wants to be apart."
In my opinion I should say...probably mixed with Elliot's addiction that luckily, I can't relate to.

elliott is one of the few people who has whatever magic it is that these kind of people have. this man was speaking for so many people.
Sending love to all Elliot Smith fans
From Little Havana Florida with smiles 😊 never give up guy's I know these times can be dark!!
This kid did not have ONE bad song. Not even a shitty chorus, much less a subpar bridge.
totally agree, true musical artist. r.i.p
right? never an off moment. ever
the last couple of songs on roman candle are not great imo. southern belle's kinda annoying to me. but even his songs that I don't really like have some sort of merit which is cool.
i like that one, hah! King's Crossing is horrible to me
Jame Dont ugh no
I always liked the hollow sounding snare in this.
One of my favorite songs by him. So original and unique.
Favorite Elliott song
I may have listened to this song over 100 times in the past 3 months I would not doubt it. There's something about it that I need, its my fix
😂lol
Well, that and heroin.
Good for all occasions...each song has a lyric that every ear can relate to and every chord is unbroken like something new--pure genius.
this song hit me hard the first time I heard it. 'you can't finish what you start' and 'i never pay attention' spoke to my struggles with ahdh like no song before. absolute perfection ❤️
A girl played this for me once about three years ago, deep into an all night session of music and philosophical conversation, like we always used to do so often. I didn't get the message until now. She was always there for me through everything. I've been a huge fool. Sometimes, the best thing for you has always been right in front of you, but you blind yourself to it. I'm fortunate that we're still in each other's lives.
You didn't see it then, you see it now, that's the most important thing. A truly beautiful track.
+Claire Scates Amen
I'm waiting for the day when the girl who's heart I broke dedicates this song to me. This would mean that she finally understands me.
Jeff Wrubel Go get her back

I really love the grunge style he uses with the low acoustic base notes. He's the only guy who reminds me of modern Nick Drake / Neil Young

You walk down Alameda looking at the cracks in the sidewalk. What a great song!.
What a superb artist. i m impressed I ve just discovered this artist. He s like syd Barret ,or Lennon, a genius.
When I first heard this song I really didn't like it. Not even 2 seconds in I would change it. Now I can't stop listening to it. Elliott was an incredible songwriter.
One of the greatest intros of all time. Elliott, you are missed. ❤
thee greatest song of ALL TIME
This should have been a huge hit
Love you Elliot. Never forgotten
I could feel that walk in its inevitability, and there's a groove like a fish swimming - freedom and tranquility. It feels like it's on the edge of a brutal consequence, escaping, there should still be hope, but something else might be inevitable... either way, he's not waiting around here.
Omg. American Rust brought me here but recognizing good music did, too. I luv luv the blends.
...harmonies....guitar. So good
I miss you Elliott, you were so much more Beatiful then you ever felt. We Love you always.
I find myself rediscovering my absolute love and admiration for Elliott Smith each time I'm currently unhappy in a relationship.

Nicely done. There was an Argument of whether this was The Alameda in LA or in Portland Oregon. never found out. good song though. on the same album as "Between the Bars" which became famous thanks to Matt Dameon.
WOW! Whatta song!
Never felt alone when I hear Elliott singing. Two peas in a pod.
I just discovered Ashley Park today and as soon as I heard their music I was like oh my gosh this sounds like Elliott Smith reincarnated. And I went looking through their songs and albums and they literally have an album title called nobody broke your heart which is literally a nod and a wink to this song.

JAMES MY GUY
in my imagination of what and who elliott was, i've always thought this song to be autobiographical.
he used to hate that ppl thought that his songs were talking about himself
he once said that that would basically mean that he has a lot of troubles which wasn´t true
@@antoniovelasco2637 kind of crazy if you think the man didn't have a lot of troubles. Not saying every or any of these songs are really about him, but his struggles with substance abuse and depression are very real.
I know he had problems of his own like everyone and maybe a little bit more, he suffered from deppression which led him to an heroin addiction, but the most of his songs weren't about him except for some
Besides, i actually meant to quote that, what i said about him hating that ppl thought all his songs were about him was something himself said

Everyone talks about Steven as some great musician, which he was, but he's also one of my favorite lyricists. They're both highly literate and highly original. I am on the fence about the snare on this, though....should it have been dampened? Maybe the rawness of the snare is part of what makes the recording so good...
nah it's annoying
