Alameda represented the heartbreak I experienced at 17. Between the Bars represented the indecision I faced at 20. Elliot Smith has been the soundtrack of my life in so many ways.
Indecisionat 20...what about real indecision at 25...almost 26.. No will to disregard what u said. Not my intention.
@WB
Get the fuck outta here. 'get out more'... Wtf does that even mean. U dont know nothing about my life. Try getting out more ureself if thats helpful

I hear this hardcore 😂❤
best album I've ever heard.

From A Basement's my personal favorite from Elliott; I like this album cause I know the lyrics lol
@@giangarciamusic Good taste man basement on a hill is on another level in my opinion. It has the introverted depth of lyricism that this one does, but with a better musical arrangement. However this album is so intimate.. it's like he's right next to your ear.. and the acoustic arrangement is spectacular. idk which I like better
it's the best album ever made.
@@concars1234 True that! This and Basement deffo my faves, though every Elliot album is amazing in its own right!
Alameda, Big Nothing, and Between the Bars- three perfect songs in a row
The whole album is "perfect songs in a row" imo
you can certainly add ´Pictures of Me´ to that row
@@jamesjames8349 no those 3 are different gravy. No Name Number 5 on the other hand is comparable.
Today is Either/Or’s 25th anniversary. One of the best albums
So fitting that i found this comment rn... Literally in a few days it'll be 26th... And gonna buy it just did.. Actually a present, but it means to me as well or well i wouldnt ever made it
Came for the awe-inspiring music, stayed for the inevitable heartache.
You said it all man.
How I wish he was still around. Feeling better, clean and making art.
His music really brings me peace and helps me through difficult times.
''I'm never gonna know you now but I'm gonna love you anyhow''
There can be true art without pain. He had it in spades. He channeled it into his music. We feel it and it echos ours. It's kind of sad and kind of beautiful, in a way.
@Giovanni .That's an XO , I was at seattle airport played this song in last week
Deeply emotional and musically complex and beautiful when you can make these darkest feelings beautiful and reach into the souls of others as Elliott does, well, that's great art. He's one for the generations. Fortunately he was a prolific writer and and loved recording. Just grateful we had him and he gave us the gift of this beautiful and moving music. Listening to him is like a school for melody and lyrics. He's like all four Beatles in one guy.
Fucking awesome that so many of us feel the pain, the beauty, the hurt and the loveliness of Elliot, and of ourselves. We are still here. Let’s make music, art, friendships, lives, and a promise that we will love.
Been thinking the same lately. One of my favorite artists of all time 💜
Alameda is my favourite song. Its just superb.
Got a broken heart and a name on my cast.
What a genius musician and lyricist
Rest easy , Mr. Smith ( not the name they call you with )
I only found out about this guy a week ago. He's been the soundtrack to my life since then! A total underrated and understated artist.Thank God for Elliot Smith!!!!
Peace!
That's funny. I got into him in like 2004 and felt like I was super late to the game.

there's just something so warm, comfortable and fragile about this particular album that just keeps me coming back to it every time i feel the leaves coming to the ground or when the wind blows down my self esteem, one way or the other. i like it a lot, glad I can listen to it in its entirety on youtube.
20 years ago we lost the songwriter of a generation
As I mark a decade since discovering Elliot Smith, an artist whose music still resonates deeply within me, I'm struck by how my musical preferences have undergone a profound transformation. Once immersed in the beats of hip-hop, occasionally indulging in the allure of indie folk and rock, my journey has taken an unexpected turn. Life's inexplicable nature defies concise description, as it unfolds and shapes our experiences, leading us on a path of personal growth and evolution.
His guitar work was also incredible. I, too, miss him very much.

Watching the parade with pinpoint eyes full of smoldering anger. I so relate to the messages Elliott was putting out. I will never get over his death. It's like I lost an arm or something.
I saw him down in the alley, having had enough of it all.
My all time favorite musician. He had so much inside him
I just can't really describe how much I love Elliott's music.........too much!
I so needed to hear Elliot at This moment...💔❤️🌹🙏🙏🙏
I still LOVE this album. It's Elliott Smith's masterpiece. Somehow, E.S made an album where I can relate to all the songs in someway. Even cupid's trick (Which is so cryptic but I still found meaning/interpretation)
then he went and did figure 8 🤯🤯🤯
One of the best, heartfelt albums I've ever heard. Easily in my top 100 albums if not top 10. -That said, it's unfortunate he didn't create more albums that create an atmosphere along these lines. While I have found songs of other albums I love, this is the one album I deeply enjoy start to finish.
I've never heard a voice so haunting and sublime, a singer-songwriter so authentic and real. Nick Drake is similar. Leonard Cohen makes us "sigh eternally" also. Depression and drinking to alleviate it ties many of these rare artists together. If only they would stop killing themselves.
Dude someones killin em
is sigh eternally a pennyroyal tea reference??
@@noverrr4508 well duh dude
I liked your comment, yet, I cant imagine any human stabbing themselves in their heart: let alone twice. the delves in the heart twice? It’d against your nature to not come up for air. If he stabbed himself even once, I do think he’d be capable again. Or what kind of fucked up hero are you dreaming of?
As a early listener he takes you somewhere and sometimes it's not a good place but he makes that place sound so beautiful
This album HITS so hard.....
between the bars is the best song I ever heard
There's always a new gem to be found when it comes to Elliott's music. Can't believe it's been almost 14 years since he passed but I'm happy to see that even though he's been gone for a while there's still more to come, even if it isn't new songs.
I'll always hold him close to my heart.
Best of Elliott Smith 2001-2003 (Unreleased)
soundtrack of many lifetimes.
This album is narcotic bliss. The guitar playing is basically just silk... the drums are punchy. Although there is a sense of melancholy the depressive subject matter of the lyrics is overrided by the smooth sensuality of the music. It's actually a dangerous album, it's a partaking in pleasure at the expense of one's better sense.
dangerous pfffft lol...
@@willabbottsmith like in a way
Yes, I agree. Leonard Cohen also. When you're down, listening to someone who really knows can be a gift/curse.
Yeah, totally and I love it! It’s my lullaby
So damn true man!
This album blows my mind later.... i have already listen too many albums from the great Elliott Smith. i think ... EITHER/OR and ELLIOT SMITH are the 2 albums i relly like the most(there is too many parts from Elliot to listen and to appreciate too many songs!!!!...) its is a shame... He left us unable to continue embracing his music and his soul but not quite. I hope you're giving strength to this movement wherever you are... and may many follow in your musical footsteps... which make you a little more human than we are.I embrace all the people who appreciate this music not for its lyrics but for its musical content - mainly -.Change and Out of Earthlings....
2021, i still miss you man! RIP Elliot!
This is an album you play in an apartment which has absolutely no heating.
Or walking around a park in a city where you have no acquaintances
I like Rose Parade but the whole album is a document of pure art and dark beauty.
This artist sounds like Syd Barret . I ve just discovered him I love his sensual voice , his music. He s class.
the greatest singer songwriter of all time
I think so!
Dustin Mulligan it’s simply the best back catalogue in music.
Lyrical genius like no other.
I’ve been listening for 19 years and I’ll listen to the day I die.
The truth and beauty in his music will never fade and we’ll keep his memory alive.

classic & timeless=] Rest in power.
the best just got better
True.
even though i own this album on many formats, i love to come onto youtube videos of this album to read comments on how others view this album. personally, i think e.s had the talent of all 4 beatles combined, and well, if that statement is extra, ill tone it down a notch and say he was the 7th beatle ( brian epstein being 5th and billy preston being 6th). regardless, this is a phenomenal record and is his masterpiece
I don't think it's overkill to say that ES was more talented than the each beagle. Beatles were revolutionary in their time and also wrote amazing songs. But ES's songs are arguably better and have more spirit in them. (But would ES have written those songs without the pioneering work of the Fab Four? Prob not.)
What about George martin?
Listening to this for the first time.. WOW, it's so light and breezy but warm and dark all at once. I hear a major late-beatles influence as well which explain great the hooks and phrasing.
Beautiful. Thank you Rick and Morty, to the writer of that episode; for bringing Elliot Smith to my knowledge. When these songs came out, I was young but now I'm old enough to appreciate such beautiful works.. I'm no expert but, I know when I see a true artist who writes and plays his own music. And also based on the praise for him that I see online.. He may not be around anymore but he left us these beautiful songs that we can cherish whenever. Thank you Elliot.
Dan Taas grew up listening to him, it sucks more don't know about him honestly. He really is amazing!
Same feeling as yours. when i heard the song on the R&M ep i didn't take it seriously at first as the lyrics fitted the plot of the currents, it just made me laugh and get like "oh boy, that's how dumb i look when i go on my rants", eventually i re-watched the episode and really noticed the song and also the concerns that rick ephemerally had as his young self and it just kinds clicked. Such a talented musician, really bummed to find out he's dead, still so cool that i can enjoy his legacy thanks to a tv show
No matter how many times I've listened to this record, it still impresses me like the first time. I just can't get used to his genius.
Bitter Sweet!
I love you Elliott one day a will hug you in heaven
thank you so much for this, amazing

He will not be forgotten.
I love Elliott Smith.
The 90's were a decade where artists transformed their honest, deep emotion into music, and this album is, not only in this respect, one of the greatest ever to deliver that exact attutide.

And it's a 1 man band too! The dude was too talented.

He rivals Dylan for greatest singer songwriter. Very few other commercial successes have made it as far, touched as many folks, or have been as impactful to a generation. Elliott Smith will go down as a relative genius.
As good as Elliott or Bob Dylan are, Nick Drake will always be at the top.
Thanks for this. It’s pretty surprising to see all of the hate here
brilliant , i hear the beatles and chris cornell in his work., had a great few weeks found elliott and nick drake.
I would be really surprised if Cornell influenced Elliott at all. Beatles is spot on. Check out the song "a distorted reality". I get very heavy Beatles vibes from it.

I listened to this first when I was 18, and reading Either/Or by Kierkegaard, I didn't get the connection, being too young to understand Elliott Smith or Kierkegaard. Now I think I see it more, it's a vague connection, but I think I see it, in some of the lyrics, the ideas of being purposely disconnected, maybe?
I think it all goes back to our tendency to regret Things
18 definitely not to young i first got into Elliott when i was 15

#2021
I think they have to REMIX and then remaster the entire album. This edition sounds very similar to the original, just a little brighter. Anyway, it's an amazing record. I love it.
But... It's a remaster... Not a remix. It's a good album, with even finer polish, if you want remixes, go listen to that genre, otherwise enjoy the music for what it is and stop looking down your long nose. People like you make me happy I'm not in the music industry, you justify Elliott or any musician wanting to leave this planet with your nonsense. It specifically says it's a remaster, not a remix and your still not happy.
@@benphone7430 I may be wrong, but it seems your misunderstanding what he means by remixing the album. He doesn’t mean it in the sense of remixing a pop song or something. Your use of the word “genre” makes it seem like this is what you mean, so I apologize if i’m wrong.
Remixing isn’t a genre, and albums can benefit greatly from completely remixers, with the original engineer having progressed a great deal while being able to stay true to the albums aesthetic.
Sebastián Gereda - It was remastered which in today’s musical environment typically means they did a fresh transfer of the two track Stereo Master Tapes. To do a remix you have to back a generation or sometimes more to the Original Multitrack Tapes and create a totally new mix. Google Remix vs Remaster and you can find some good articles or videos describing the difference. Basically Elliott started by recording onto Multitrack tapes (4 track and 16 track if I’m not mistaken though he may have used 24 tracks but probably not because with the small amount of layers he wouldn’t need more than 8 or 16 tracks)... Then those tapes containing 4, 8 or 16 tracks wouldn’t sound right until they were mixed down to the Stereo Master Tape which is always a two track tape by definition. So Larry Crane took the two track Stereo Master Tapes and played them and had the sound sent a digital system like Protools or Cubase and added equalization and other “tweaks” but he can’t change anything substantial... Everything is going to remain where it was in the mix.
