I don't understand how someone could write so many perfect songs. Literally perfect. Perfect structure, playing, chord progression, lyrics, singing, self production
I don't care what anyone says this is Smith personifying an addiction, who promises "you" everything while simultaneously taking it all away. Sweet, subtle, violent, comforting, all at the same time.
"Between The Bars" Drink up baby, stay up all night With the things you could do You won't but you might The potential you'll be That you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now And forget all about The pressure of days Do what I say And I'll make you okay And drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again between the bars Where I'm seeing you there With your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time And I'll make you mine Keep you apart, Deep in my heart Separate from the rest, Where I like you the best And keep the things you forgot The people you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
I see this song as a warning. Its basically about a personified addiction trying to convince someone to indulge in it, and as someone who probably has reason to just break down and get addicted as a way to avoid life, I see this song as a way to remind myself that it isn't that bad, and that I should just keep going.
this is one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. he captures this beautiful and comforting sadness so well. his voice is so reassuring but also so tired and heartachingly sad. Elliott smith is a genius. I don't know where I would be without his music.
Drink up baby, stay up all night With the things you could do You won't but you might The potential you'll be That you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now And forget all about The pressure of days Do what I say And I'll make you okay And drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again between the bars Where I'm seeing you there With your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time And I'll make you mine Keep you apart, Deep in my heart Separate from the rest, Where I like you the best And keep the things you forgot The people you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
I heard about Elliott Smith a long time ago. He was recommended to me by a friend. I never got around to listening to him. A little while later I read a book called "Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda". Elliott was mentioned many times throughout the book so I decided I should finally give him a listen. But I forgot, until now. The movie version of the book (they changed the name to "Love, Simon") is coming out so I decided to read the book again. This time I didn't forget to look up this song. I am so not disappointed!
I read the book yesterday and I searched Elliott Smith up too and after listening to this, its been stuck in my head the whole day. I’m replying to a comment from 3 years ago.
Elliott in a way has helped me deal with my depression. I love to listen to his music and be sad with him. After a few songs though I get up and go on with my life silently singing his beautiful lyrics.
I find this music the most soothing. It may sound depressing but it allows you to feel all the types of emotions of the world. It’s the music that u listen to when u are alone... just slowly close ur eyes and let it take control of ur soul
I recently discovered Elliott Smith, somehow I had never heard of him. I was in the midst of a rough time and this song an many others of his spoke to me so much. His music has really meant a lot to me and will continue to inspire me in my own songwriting
Elliott and Townes Van Zandt. I just can't take too much of them at once or I'm guaranteed to be a sobbing mess. Like two or three songs at a time is my sweet spot 😁
Unfortunately he tragically passed away due to suicide some years ago. The world lost an invaluable artist that day. Wherever he is hopefully he knows what an impact he’s made.
congratulations on discovering one of the greatest artists of the indie world! i’m kinda envious that you get to listen to his masterpieces for the first time. enjoy !
i like to listen to this once in a while just to remind myself i am not completely dead inside. takes about one to two listens and i am crying my eyes out. it's honestly cathartic. we all hurt sometimes and that's okay. smith was beyond gifted, one of the greatest ever, gone too soon.
i still remember our last date and how enamoured i was, thinking “i probably look so dumb staring at him right now” we were at a bar he liked, i didn’t know the city too well, i remember our kisses and the comforting silence i felt after them, but he probably felt it was awkward. i wonder if it’ll be gut wrenching if i pass by the bar we had our last date at, still remember his blue dress shirt and his smile. i’ve been on the verge of throwing up cause i miss him so much. love is so weird, i really hope we can meet again, maybe it was the wrong time

Somehow, Smith managed to emulate that subtly nagging voice inside the head and heart of every alcoholic. I hear this and feel thankful to be three-and-a-half years sober.
No Shit man...is there anyone left that searches for music? Or do they just like that "one song" from soundtracks? lol I lived through the 90s. No internet. STILL found it. In heaven now, a world of art at my fingertips!
this is the exact song that i never wanted to click on while drunk. it's too perfect. i'm already sad and crying and i wont stop listening to it. i need it in order to persevere.
These lyrics are just umppphhs!!! So plunged, and personally there-with-you, and in some easily-relatable-to's overly-creative head. All these years later, I am still finding Soulsbourne secrets in the production and vocals and gorgeously resigned atmosphere. I still shed tears to the beauty and the memory of all of it.
If you've ever lived life as a loner, depressed by the knowledge that comes with reality and finding solice in heroin, you know Elliott's thoughts behind the songs.
its like he doesn't try to sound good his try to feels you what he feels. this song is the first song that i can finally feel something. (sorry for bad english.)

My sentiments exactly. I’m blown away
They say the greatest things come from people at their lowest.
Listen to Bright Eyes too, if you haven’t.
A single serving of this song = at least six times on replay
Hahaha! Definitely worth at least 2 plays. Who said songs need to be 6 minutes long?
Spandan Adhikari ?????
Spandan Adhikari oh aha, didn't notice the picture, taxi driver is great!
That’s actually the proper portion size for every Elliott Smith song

"Between The Bars"
Drink up baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do
You won't but you might
The potential you'll be
That you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
And forget all about
The pressure of days
Do what I say
And I'll make you okay
And drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there
With your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time
And I'll make you mine
Keep you apart,
Deep in my heart
Separate from the rest,
Where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

There's something so haunting but so calming about this song. I literally have never heard anything quite like it.
Me either ): makes me cry everytime
That's what made Elliot so special.

@slava morris I pity you
@slava morris it’s literally about a person trying to convince a sober person to release back into addiction. Wtf do you know.
@slava morris It's basically alcohol talking to Elliott Smith

What a song man. One of those that you keep playing over and over. I hope he knows how adored his music is, how raw. Truly so special
