I just want to mention: Metal powders created by abrading them are extremely bad for your lungs (As you can see in the video, John has said he wore a dust mask during grinding and keeps the pieces well away from his face) and I want to remind people to wear a mask and or use a vacuum cleaner with a good filter in it and work in front of the suction head to avoid getting metal powders in your lungs. The small cut off wheels also have epoxy, fibreglass and abrasive grit in them.

I've been using Dremel rotary tool and it's excellent but I've been holding the whole tool in my hand which goes numb quite quickly while working. Flex shaft will give me much more freedom. There's also so many bits I haven't been using yet, so excited to try them!

Most of my work is actually carving fossils ivories (Mostly Mammoth ivory), antler and bone. I use the cones, wheels and I also have a kind of micro cone mandrel that holds 3mm wide polishing cones. I would recommend that you take your Rolex to a recognized Rolex dealer and have them send the watch in for refinishing. You don't want to do anything to an expensive watch that could potentially decrease its value or void its warranty. Thanks for your support! : )

As mentioned in the video, separating discs can be used to remove sprus from castings. You can also use them to grind surfaces flat for soldering. You might also use them to carve a decorative textured surface. Thanks for watching the video. 😀
Luckily my partner works as a chef in a local hospice and he has to look out for the kitchens safety regulations and he brings me home masks (for dust but in the kitchen they're for chemical cleaners) and eye protection so for once I am probably being a good student lol!
Prof. John, I only have a Dremel but I have all the attachments. ..do I really need a flex shaft or can it wait until I havey cabin workshop up and running? Should be by summer when I will have it all kitted out for hot work and any heavy duty stuff. I'm managing with the Dremel so far and my torch but really want a proper kiln and forge and I am not the best at waiting (I know, its like instant gratification but I get all excited about projects and am a bit of a kid when I have to wait to try stuff out! lol!

For myself, I have a dremel, a foredom and a special dental micromotor machine (Kavo K10), but before I had all of that, I was using a 10 dollar clone of a Dremel (Without flex shaft, since it was badly made, the one I had) and it served me for 4 years :) If you are in no hurry, you can order a good flex shaft from Aliexpress for really cheap.

@Foxiepaws A - Wen makes a good rotary tool, the entire kit is only ~$20 - that’s for the tool, attachments, and a 4’ flex shaft. I have a brand name Dremel too, and the accessories are completely interchangeable. The one thing you didn't show...I need help with. The long sanding piece that has no way to put anything on top to tighten it. So when I use it it wobbles and eventually pops off the screw. Thanks K
Hi Kaye, Based on your description, I believe you are describing an item similar to the one in the photo for the video. Just be sure that you have screw in mandrel that are threaded in the correct direction. And, be sure that you are running your flex shaft in a forward motion. Otherwise, the element on the end of the mandrel will unscrew itself and fall off. I hope this helps. Thanks for your support! : )
You should put it in a vice grip or a clamp (Making sure not to bend the shaft) and make sure the sanding piece is twisted all the way down. When you start to use it (Until it wears down to a cone shape top), just use light pressure. I had the same problem until I twisted it down well.
If you mean flex shaft vs. Dremel, I would choose the flex shaft because there are more accessories for it. This includes different types of hand pieces; including hammer hand pieces and quick change hand pieces. Thanks for your support! : P
I actually meant a micro-motor- like the Foredom. I've seen a few jewelers using them instead of a pendant motor for stone setting work, it has the quick change hand-piece style. Always wondered....
difference between a "mizzy wheel" and the last white wheel you used, it's all a bit confusing....we need to know why we'd use one instead of the other, etc. (tough question, I know...). Please illuminate us with the REAL info, the whole "whatever you choose" thing is soooo misleading, mixed up. There just MUST be a reason to use one item over another... I hope! Thanks!
The mizzy wheel is a very course grinding wheel. The silicone white wheel is not quite as abrasive. If you look up the various attachments on a jewelry supply website in a supply catalog, you can read descriptions of their qualities and what they can be used for. But experimentation is really the best way to become acquainted with these tools. Dremel sells a set of attachments for their tool that includes many items similar to what was shown in the video. There are many good presenters on various subjects on UA-cam, but your presentation clearly shows you are a great educator. Clear, concise and informative. But I am cringed when seeing you hold the parts by your fingers when cutting or polishing them. The parts or the flying wheel can fly off accidentally injuring you or the Dremel operator. The 30,000 RPM Dremel can cut off your finger in a blink of an eye. Why not laying down the coil on the table and holding the wooden rod while cutting the coil? I would use a pair of piers to hold the brass piece while shining it instead of holding it by your fingers?

hi, do you weare a mask when sanding the metal? or just while polishing with the compound?
You can wear a mask during both procedures. However, if you use wet/dry sandpaper under water, no mask is necessary when you sand. 😀

Does any "washer" have to be on top, or are they ever underneath? And if so, or not, why? Thanks
The washer helps to keep the screw from slipping. It works best when it's on top in my opinion.
